11 reviews for McArthur Burney Falls State Park
2nd time to McArthur-Burney Falls SP which is about 30 min from Lassen NP North entrance. It's a must visit if you love waterfalls as much as I do.
It's 129 ft tall and just beautiful. I think it runs year round. When we went Sun 8/30/09 it was still good and when you walk to the base it's nice & cool.

We did the falls overlook - just 150 ft walk. Then the base of falls - 0.3 mi one way. We also did the Falls Loop 1.2 mi one way (about 45 min walk around, some elev. gain.) We didn't have time to explore more since we had a 5.5hr drive back to Fremont.
They have a NEW visitor center open Wed-Sun from 12-3p. Closed Mon & Tues.
General Store is small. Bathrooms across from the Store.
Day use is $8 per car; $7 w/ senior 62+.
Note: Can be really warm in the park in the summer.
TIP: Special Events: On the Sunday of Columbus Day weekend, the park hosts Heritage Day (FREE Admission!!!), featuring demonstrations and recreations of activities and crafts common to people during the late 19th century.
Hope to go back & do more hikes one day.

You are probably thinking - "Honey! Click over to the next review! This guy gave this place a two star review! He is clearly not a wilderness aficionado like us rebels!"
There is a reason! I swear!
Here is the deal:
-The falls are amazing! Cool, calming, beautiful, tall. Wow.
-The campsite are nice.
-There is all sorts of nature all over the place and the squirrels are just plain adorable.
But-
-The staff are some of the rudest and most arrogant people that I have ever met. The bathrooms were dirty and the lights were out. We asked for repairs and got a run-around for a long while before they bucked up and took control of the situation.
To have a light fixed so you don't have to worry about peeing on a raccoon or getting bit in the ass by a deadly spider, you have to go through at least three people.
Ask the ranger and he will call a maintenance man. That guy will ponder the situation, take a long look and look very, very confused. He then will call someone to actually fix the light. That person may or may not have the proper tools. You may have to get two or three more people on your side.
-Also, be very cautious around the rangers. Our party did not drink, sacrifice any local wildlife or rape and pillage anything, yet we almost all got arrested for "being too loud and uncooperative to the law men." We had no music going. We had a conversation and some s'mores.
Officer Davis, Badge # 270 is the biggest self-righteous ass that I have ever come across in a "leisure" situation. Watch out for this guy.
Visit the falls, enjoy the nature and have fun. It just feels wrong to have to keep your guard up so your rights don't get violated.

Located in between the volcanic peaks of Mt. Shasta and Mt. Lassen sits one of the most beautiful waterfalls I've ever visited. Like much of the region the falls were formed by previous volcanic activity in this case from molten lava which had risen from the earth underground. The falls which feature two massive plumes of water are fed by the nearby Lake Britton and the Pit River and various natural springs located underground. Additionally, water plunges from holes located throughout the molten rock which adds to the significant beauty of the falls.
Sara A and I visited about a month ago as part of a week-long camping trip to meet up with old friends visiting from Europe. While planning our outdoors vacation Sara had come across a photo on the internet (http://www.yelp.com/bi...). I think the photo had her sold that we would be making a stop here on our way to the Mt. Lassen National Forest. Although she didn't know it at the time I had visited the falls once many years ago.
The crashing waters of Burney Falls can be heard as soon as you drive into the parking lot. Although you can see parts of the falls from the parking lot take a very short hike onto the Falls Loop Trail to get the full view of the waterfall. Strapped for time we didn't do the entire hike only enough of it to catch some striking views of the waterfall and Burney Creek which runs downstream from the waterfall.
There is a visitors center and a small gift shop located near the parking lot. There are park volunteers and a ranger to answer any questions you might have. The park features many hiking trails of different distances and terrains and a fold out brochure is available from the visitors center. Signage suggests that the trails are open to hikers and bikers alike so be alert. Dogs are also allowed on the trails as long as they are on a leash. The leash law suggests that leashes must only be a maximum of six feet long. We noticed quite a few hikers walking their happy, tail-wagging puppies along the trail.
According to the brochure we got there is camping available on site with 128 campsites and 24 cabins which feature propane stoves and bunk beds with foam pads. The park is open year round. I've posted a few photos in the photo section.

I LOVE it here. So calm. You can here the falls from anywhere on the grounds. The squirrel's are way to used to humans which means they try and get into your stuff even when you are right there which is kind of annoying but so not there fault.
The falls literally take your breath away. Super easy little hike and you are there up and personal. Most beautiful falls I have ever seen.
We went for 7 days over Easter break and had a blast. Bike friendly. The bathrooms are heated and the showers way nicer then most campgrounds.
We went on a Saturday - early - around 7, so we missed the $6 and were the first ones there. Basically, you park and you are right there at the falls overlook and one of the most beautiful waterfalls you'll ever see. Lots of parking and a little store for snacks and coffee. You can walk down and take a clearly marked falls loop trail (super easy for fellow wimps) or branch off. The hour drive from Redding is definitely worth it.
This is the first time visiting this park. Myself and bunch of my friends spent the 4th of July week end here. Every one really loved it. The falls loop , the falls every thing is great. We didn't swim around since we were tired after checking out other places. Big parking lot unlike the other place and they do have a convenience store to buy anything from camping items to swim wears in case you forgot. There is a fee of 6$ to enter. The falls is a 0.3 miles hike from the parking lot and the falls loop which goes around the falls runs 1 mile(i guess).
Such an amazing sight and no pictures?! Well I'll fix that right up :-)
I have never seen a larger or more spectacular waterfall. I can't put into words how stunning I found the falls and the falls loop trail. We went in early fall (October 8th I think) and the leaves were just turning color, so wonderful! Burney creek was a bustling little thing beautiful, clean and clear.
I would never have known about Burney falls if not for a good friend & co-worker. I am thankful he suggested them it was one of the best parts of our vacation.
The sound of the falls was so relaxing I just stood there with my eyes closed for several moments. I definitely want to go back sometime soon.

What surprised me most was the sheer force of the falls. Coming in I wasn't expecting such beauty knowing California is in the midst of a water shortage, but Burney Falls was spectacular. The waters are nice and clear too. We hiked on the Falls Trail only up to a footbridge on Burney Creek then turned and went back because we were strapped for time and wanted to get to our camp site before it got dark. The mist from the waterfalls was very invigorating. After finally seeing Burney Falls in person I can finally understand why Teddy Roosevelt declared these falls "the eighth wonder of the world". Simply spectacular!

I agree with the first review in all details. I would add the nesting of the Black Swift for you bird people. They are there nesting BEHIND the water fall in hidden cavities. They show up in May and hang around until the little ones have gone. I would suggest the park paved side for the walk down and back for those having difficulty walking. Take your time! Trail on the other side is narrow and steep for a short ways, but very beautiful. If you are there at the right time you might see some young wren's or woodpeckers in the trees around you. Great stream of icy clear water makes you want to sit at the edge and just watch the light play on the ripples. Oh look for dippers slipping under the water to find bugs! They are amazing how they can stand up to the water.
The lower bridge is a another great spot to cool off on very hot days!
Oh yes, I do believe they sell ice cream at the store!

Five Stars for the amazing waterfall! It is really spectacular - in addition to the flow from the creek above, there are shafts of water that come directly out of the volcanic rocks of the cliff-face itself. The dramatic flow into the shallow pool below creates a lovely mist that refracts light into rainbows and cools off the viewing area in front of the falls. Especially nice on a hot day. I recommend walking the Falls Loop trail first & then following the Rim Trail out to Lake Britton. While there we saw numerous turtles, a family of river otters and a bald eagle.

I love this campsite, the highlight is of course Burney falls. I love the walk to get to the top of the falls it is simply breathtaking. I love how you can feel the mist from the waterfall as you walk through the trail leading to the top.
As far as the campground goes it kept very clean despite the numerous visitors. The lake is also great fun, we rented a paddle boat and were lucky enough to see a couple of turtles, which I didn't expect.
The campground now has cabins that you can rent. I can't wait to go back.
