The fact that no one seems to have mentioned HOW FRACKING AMAZING THE BAGELS ARE is nothing short of a travesty. Hand to god. H&H, Essa, et al have NOTHING on a plain bagel toasted with butter from Mazzolat. For the three (loooooong) years that we were away from Brooklyn I schemed about how to overnight bagels from Mazzola approximately seven hundred and eighty nine thousand times.

The staff are some of the sweetest ladies in the world with seemingly little to no turn over. It's a good thing that they are now just enough of a walk away to prevent DAILY consumption.

This place is always packed. They don't have seating inside. Just two benches outside and a few tables during the warmer months.  For the most part, I find the cookies and pastries mediocre. The coffee is okay. But one thing this place kicks ass in is their bread. Especially their lard bread. Drool.

A cute little bake shop for the 'hood. I've only tried a few of their breads and pastries, which both were good but I can't claim outstanding-ness. Walking by it smells absolutely scrumptious, however -- especially their large selection of fresh roasted coffee (which I don't drink, but like to smell). After reading these reviews, though, I've got to go back and try a bagel as the selection nearby is otherwise pretty dismal.

Amazing local bakery.  The bread is fresh and delicious every morning.  The cookies and cupcakes and brownies are to die for.  My personal favorite is my routine weekend morning everything bagel, toasted with butter, and coffee.  Sure, the coffee is a little more than your average cup of joe, but totally worth it!  Best cup in the 'hood.

So, I went to go see a new apartment on Union Street and after my interview with my perspective new housemate, I stopped into the bakery to see what they had to offer, it being the closest shop to my possibly-future new home.

Sourdough baguettes, bing! I'm from San Francisco and you are hard pressed to find a tasty sourdough here in town. I think that baguette actually sold me on the apartment! lol

I went back a second time to try them on their chocolate croissant. And, boy am I glad I did! I think it's the best I have ever had. They don't skimp on the chocolate, like other spots do with a smattering of like 13 tiny chocolate chips.. they slather a thick 1/4 inch of dark chocolate heaven inside. Decadent. I'm gonna get fat at my new apartment. Lucky it's a 6 block walk to the subway. lol

Great & helpful personalities behind the counter too.

    xo

I have a confession.... For the second time in a row, I stopped by this place to buy something to share with friends (baguettes, canoli, cookies, etc.) and it never made it to their mouths. I've had wonderful timing where freshly baked goods are being put on display still hot out of the oven, making it my obligation to indulge in. I make these excuses to buy extra to share and never actually do. So I am guilty.

This place is fantastic. Great service and extremely friendly staff. Even all the other customers are friendly. Delicious everything. My favorites: canoli, chocolate croissants, any assortment of the cookies and freshly baked crusty breads. Most recently, I stopped by here 2 days in a row for Italian Easter Bread (the braided anisette bread with sprinkles and hard-boiled eggs) to share on Easter Sunday and probably have to come by a third day since that last wreath might be gone before Sunday!

What the (expletive) did they do to my beloved Lemon Cake?

I would head to Mazzola whenever I'd need my coffee and cake fix - for six years in a row. They HAD the best iced lemon cake - ever. Made with love and yummy goodness and a delish white frosting.

Then, one recent day, I walked in to discover a shockingly neon yellow item where the lemon cake used to be. They claimed it was their lemon cake. I tried it. Gross. Not "kinda not what I was expecting" - like, gross. Sickeningly sweet - it tasted "fake" - sooooo not made with love.

This echoed the sentiment of a close friend who also found Mazzola to be going a little downhill over the past several months. (Serving cookies they didn't make there, but shipped in from wherever the sticker says; watered down French Vanilla coffee; rushed service.)

I truly only I want good things for Mazzola, I like this little place - but I also want my lemon cake back!

I only tried the Olive Bread but I have to say it wasn't very good. Not much flavor and I prefer to have to whole pitted cured olives in it not chopped the way they do it. Maybe I'll try something else next time just because it is very nearby.

Since many people seems to be crazy about this place, and  I am traveling another borough, I decided to go wild on my bread shopping. I got Ciabatta, lard bread, French rolls, and croissant. I also got hazelnut coffee as some yelper recommended.
The lard bread is more of 'salami &cheese bread' with tons of peppers. It is pretty tasty. Let's face it how can you go wrong with salami & cheese on yeasty bread. Ciabatta was good, but on a dense side. I like the Ciabatta Trader Joe has, light, and airy. The roll was also good, crunchy outside and chewy inside. Croissant was pretty plain. The coffee was OK, but not sure considering the location, no place to sit and only 12 oz, if they can justify charging $1.75.

We'd driven by Mazzola six weeks ago and it looked cute from the outside - so after checking Yelp reviews when we got home, we vowed to go there the next time we were in the neighborhood.  We went there yesterday, and the person in front of us in line highly recommended the chocolate croissants.  They'd just put out some freshly-made ones, so we each got one and we also bought a loaf of whole-grain bread.  In addition, we couldn't resist the tempting-sounding names for two of their coffee beans - Jamaican Rum and Caramel Nut Fudge - so we bought a pound of each.

We devoured the croissants yesterday (sinfully rich) and today we ate the bread & tried the Jamaican Rum coffee.  The coffee was really good (like drinking liquid candy) and we look forward to trying the Caramel.  The bread was good (it was much better warmed-up than not), but certainly not the best we've ever eaten.

(Update on 2/5/11):  The Caramel Nut Fudge coffee is *delicious*!

    I live in Boston.
My best friend works in Carroll Gardens and often lures me into taking random weekend trips to New York by using lard bread as bait. It works. I went Friday. I had the lard bread and when it was gone I wished there was more. I might need to move to New York so I can try everything else Mazzola has to offer. The bread just blew my mind. Those delightful chunks of pepperoni! The flecks of pepper! The toasty cheese on top! And the lard in the dough makes it so flaky and flavorsome.
It's one of those things that is just so good, I don't even want to attempt to try and make it myself because it will never measure up.

Mazzola is a little hole in the wall bakery, but they make fantastic breads, muffins etc.  Its all always wonderfully fresh tasting.  I don't think I ever had something I disliked from Mazzola, but my personal favorite has to be a loaf of olive bread complimented by a little olive oil and some salt.  I can easily eat a whole loaf in a sitting in this fashion.
    Interesting facts:
~They are always cooking the next day's goods in the wee small hours and this tends to make the whole intersection smell delicious, as I'm sure anyone living in the area with irregular sleep patterns will attest.
~Mazzola is the bakery in which Nicolas Cage's character worked in in the 1987 film Moonstruck.

I assumed it was a sign that the pastries inside the displays weren't anything to write home about when nearly every single patron who walked in after me darted directly for the cooler at the back or the coffee along the wall. Perusing my options, I wasn't impressed with any unique or particularly aesthetically appealing choices, and wasn't in the mood or position to score some Lard Bread. It's cash only and signage is minimal and the staff can be dismissive, a volatile combination. Of those who didn't go to the cooler first, another three people, a cop not excluded, cut me due to the haphazard nature of the operation. ANYWAYS, I went with a single chocolate macaroon for $1.50 (YES, a buckfifty), a "regular hazelnut" "biscotti" (generous with hazelnut in the unconventially shaped biscotti and imparted a crunch due to said nuts; not the twice-baked method, it seems, but tasty, albeit very unpleasantly mealy) and a $1.75 lemon poppy muffin ("assorted muffins"+clueless staff=another bad 1+1) for $4.40 from the young girl behind the counter, resisting the chocolate-dipped raspberry rugelach, which was ordered in an extra-relaxed fashion by the woman in front of me (who cut me, much like jerks who cut you off to sit at a red light).
PS Mazzola Bakery is located on the corner of Henry St., with communal benches outside.

Run by three generations of bakers, this corner bakery is a wonderful place to go for fresh bread or coffee. They supposedly offer hot bread hourly, and even though the loaves we bought last night weren't fresh from the oven, they were extremely fresh and delicious.

    C. and I picked up the Italian bread and a loaf of ciabatta to take to a friend's cookout. Both were excellent -- and apparently a hit, as both loaves had been devoured by the time we left. The brie cheese we brought was also polished off, but it seems as though smoked gouda might not be that popular a cheese; the people hardly touched it.

I plan to return to try their other offerings. I could see this being a daily stop for area residents!

One bite from the lard bread nearly made this cheating vegetarian weak in the knees as he walked down Henry Street. Despite the incredible first bite, and second, and third, I felt compelled to leave it at my omnivorous friend's apartment for whom I was dog-sitting lest the lard consume my soul.
Oh yeah, the lemon cake and pain au chocolat are pretty kickin too.

My husband works in the area and always grabs coffee & fresh baked breads from Mazzola. He recommended the hazelnut coffee. So I had the opportunity (while attending his award ceremony) to try it for myself. OMG, the coffee was delicious! The aroma and sweet taste was overwhelming. Be sure to let them know not to OD with the sugar.

The croissants, bagels, and breads are freshly baked in the mornings. In fact, it's so fresh that the owner walked into the kitchen, took out a dozen freshly baked loaves and loaded into his car (on a Sat). The staff are friendly and extremely prompt with orders. After getting my coffee and chocolate croissant (highly recommended), I sat on one of the benches outside to gaze the morning view. I know, it sounds a bit cliché but that's how good the coffee tasted!

Their lard bread makes me happy and their cheese bread is worth a go for any vegetarians. The service is delightful, too.

But seriously, do not hesitate to try the lard bread. Crisp crust, soft/buttery (or lardy?) dough, pieces of flavorful salami, herbs and black pepper in a loaf. The first time I bought a loaf, I took my 10 minute walk home and found that I ate 2/3 of the whole thing! It's really one of New York's greatest pleasures.

The best Italian bakery in town. Mazzola has been there forever and is the one and only place to buy fresh bread every morning. No matter what, come rain or shine, "every" morning :)) I feel blessed that I live just around the corner and don't have to freeze my tail off during winter time, because I'd shovel all the way from Queens if I had to just to grab that finger burning hot sourdough bagette for breakfast.

I am not saying these because I know Fred Mazzola in person. Swear! And he did not threaten me. Go Mazzola!

I'll let you in on a little secret. Mazzola sources much of the dough around the neighborhood restaurants and shops. Which by the way speaks to the quality of their offerings.
So if you'd like a little pizza or  bread dough to make a special dish on a special occasion, stop by Mazzola and ask if they have any left. Pizza Night at our house starts with a visit at Mazzola in the morning for some pizza dough At $2 a pound, it's quite worth it. They use the same pizza dough for Francesco's across the street.

My first bite of my chocolate croissant was delicious - unfortunately I burned the rest of it in the toaster oven. (word to the wise, 5 minutes at 150 degrees is too much!) : (

Our stuffed cheese bread was good, a stuffed spinach bread still waiting in the fridge.

Unfortunately didn't have a great selection of bagels when we arrived - disappointing.  Also, not crazy about how the bread is set up facing the outside.  When ordering, it is hard to get a good look at the names, what you want to pick out, etc.

I'll have to try it again.

Reminds me of Canarsie when I grew up there and ate at least 1 loaf of bread from the local bakery. I have not had bread this good in years. I need to live right next to this place. I had some sort of sandwich roll and also the whole wheat bread. I cannot tell you how good it was. I really (seriously) had a dream about the bread a day after I had my piece of it.

Cheap as well. Why go to the corner store and get crappy bread when you can come here?

If I wasn't so stuffed from my Blue Sky Bakery muffin, I probably would have eaten the whole damn loaf.

    God Bless America.

This was the sentiment running through my mind as I returned from Mazzola Bakery & Cafe this morning, having purchased my large coffee and muffin. Not because of the historic presidential election returns a few days earlier. Not even because Mazzola has a wide assortment of excellent baked goods and breads, tantalizing cookies and cupcakes, and a well lighted display case that would feel no shame at the Museum of Natural History. But because not long before this, I'd been waiting in line at Naidres coffee shop only a block away, with only one person in front of me, while the two wooly Peter Tork hat wearing, Indigo Girl listening, well-tattooed hipster server chicks bantered on with each other about the holiday schedule as one hovered over the cash register with an unmoving index finger as the minutes passed, refusing to acknowledge that there was another customer in line.

Don't get me wrong. I'm far from a type-A personality, and rarely become impatient. But if the place down the street places more value on the satisfaction of their customers, why not exercise your free will to support them with your dollars? Within seconds of entering Mazzola (and it works this way every time) one of the pleasant and attentive women behind the counter was querying "what can we do for you, honey?" and within one minute I was on my way with hot coffee and muffin.

Yes this place has excellent baked goods, yes it adds to the neighborhood, and yes their lard bread just screams "Brooklyn." But today I appreciate it for making me glad to be an American - where a better choice is often little more than a block away. Superior service and attitude, and far better value.

4/09: A follow-up reaffirmation. Walked by Naidres this morning on my way to Mazzola and noted five people in line. Got to Mazzola with seven people in front of me, was out with my coffee and muffin in five minutes, and when I walked by Naidres those same people were still lined up.

4/10: Another Mazzola follow up, one year after the above. Place still keeps it very real - great service, no pretense, and fine products.

Stopped in Naidres the other day just to make sure my comparisons still held up. They are under some kind of new management, at least in the kitchen, but all seems the same. This joint reminds me a bit too much of why I stopped going to cafes in San Francisco - too many female managers with severe haircuts putting their testosterone on prominent display where the baked goods should be. Give me Mazzola's consistent, friendly, and above all - efficient - staff any day.

And make sure to try their pumpkin pie during the holiday season - a cut above the foo-foo celebrity chef Sweet Melissa up on Court. And, finally, for a satisfying Mazzola morning meal logging in at a whopping five bucks, the ham and cheese croissant (particularly when fresh out of the oven) and large coffee are irreproachable.

A tiny little bakery and the last of the family Italian bakeries I visited in the area. It was very cute and clean inside and they had all the typical Italian bakery fare and some delicious looking breads. I just got a chocolate covered cookie since I was stuffed from gorging myself on baked goods all day it was really delicious. The woman behind the counter was a bit confused that I only wanted one since they are sold by the pound. haha. It ended up being 40 cents well spent!

    UGH

    sorry for piling on.

but, they do make the best bagels i've ever had.

the bread is fantastic as well.

if there were a way to give more points, i would; a knock on the service door at 1a would get you a fresh bagel, hot off.

when i lived in carroll gardens, it was toooo easy to go across the street for really good coffee and fantastic bagels. all this and italian desserts cookies as well.

i've biked here, from chelsea, a half block from murray's, to get a good bagel. several times. and, they DO toast your bagels.

NOTE: these are BROOKLYN bagels, not what some consider true manhattan bagels. what that means, i don't really know, but its something about that they aren't boiled.

OH MY GOD!  I love love love this place!

I came here because of other yelpers but sort of wish I never had.  Well, at least my butt wishes I never had.  Not only are the croissants perfect and flakey, without being stale or greasy, but the pain au chocolats are TO DIE FOR.  As is the almond croissant.  This sucker is so good, it's often out by the time my dogs and me get there.  The coffee is great, the lard bread is AMAZING (i have never heard of this before - us Canadians don't have it!) and the staff is so lovely.  They always call me sweetie and I like that :)

Friendliest service of the bakeries around.

Good chai lattes, though not quite as spicy as I like them. Still solid for the 10 minutes it makes me forget it's 14 degrees outside. Everything looked and smelled fresh, i'd like to go back and try the bread.

I wish they had enough space for a couple tables and chairs.

Mazzola is just not my taste. I've tried a lot of their breads and they are neither dense nor crusty enough for me. Their Italian loaf is like Albertson's grocery store bread.

And their cookies just don't do it for me. And the lines are unjustified.

But, like I said, it's not my taste. So, whatever.

The reason I don't give Mazzola a one star review is because it's a neighborhood institution. I have never walked by there, any time of day, without seeing someone I know, and invariably stopping for a quick chat. When the weather is nice, there are tables and chairs outside. When they bake, you can smell it for blocks and it smells so good. Mazzola is a destination. People come all the way from Bond Street on the other side of the neighborhood just to get a loaf of bread and an iced tea. I know. One such person is my friend.

So, while I personally am no fan of the baked goods, my view is hardly representative.

the illest, reallest, sickest bakery I have found in this city so far. coming from Rochester NY, where good bread is the sine qua non of life, I had a hard time after moving to NYC. living in Manhattan, I was underwhelmed by the bakeries on offer (Balthazar and Sullivan were solid, but inconvenient from my location). after I moved to Bklyn and wound up living down the way from Mazzola's it was like I found heaven. finally, good bread.

I have sampled tons of their offerings, and still make it a point to stop back even though I no longer live as close as I once did. Things to try:

croissants - not always exactly the same, but that's a good thing, right? some times more crispy on the outside, sometimes softer overall, but always good. when filled with chocolate or ham and cheese, also quite nice.

rainbow cookies - my favorite dessert!

mini muffins - they have at least orange, chocolate, lemon usually; sweet 2-bite nibbles.

biscotti - so much better than that packaged stuff

olive bread - really good, but variable. the olives don't seem evenly mixed in, so you might get an olive-heavy or an olive-light loaf, and it can be hard to tell from the outside...

whole wheat and multigrain - healthy, well-shaped, dense, hearty. good work.

seeded italian torpedo - airy middle and crusty outside, good for havng with dinner, esp. zuppa de mussels/clams

lard bread - everyone else here has already said: it's phe-fuckin-nonmenal. watch that you don't eat the whole loaf walking home or your spouse might be displeased...

foccaccia - they don't always have it, but when they do it's always worth getting.

lastly, it's amazing what you learn from Yelp. I didn't know they had pizza dough, but now I will make sure to get some the next time I go.

I just moved to Carroll Gardens from the Slope.....and I stopped into Mazzola while exploring my new digs. I decided to try the "lard" bread, yes I said lard...and I too thought that sounded nuts until I put it to my lips....GREAT SCOTT this bread is like transcending...I can't even describe to you...just get one! I was going to save it for later...but then I felt that it was warm through the bag and couldn't resist. Once I took a bite, I realized I could easily polish off the whole thing right then and there and not apologize for it! I am so excited to go back and try everything else! Ha and while I'm at it better hit the gym :) I don't miss you Park Slope!

A corner bakery is one of those things that the rest of the country used to have but gave up on.  Thankfully, Brooklyn has not followed suit.  Carroll Gardens is full of wonderufl bakeries and Mazzola is no exception.  While I'm usually just grabbing a bagel I also love their breads and desserts.  I love being able to walk and get a loaf or a cookie that has been made fresh and would be happy to do so even if it wasn't that great but their work is excellent and tasty.  Court St. bagel makes a slightly better bagel but is 6 blocks away while Mazzola's is 3 and that makes all the difference.  Plus Court St. doesn't have all the great breads and treats that Mazzola does.

Lard bread. Twist bread. Ham and swiss croissants. Great service. Nice folks. And if you're walking by drunk at 2am buy a loaf out of the side door. You won't be disappointed. classic bakery with exceptional quality and taste.

The people were not joking. This place is amazing!
I live in south slope but use Henry Street as my bike route home. Riding down around 2am Sunday evening, the air was suddenly filled with the most heavenly scent of baked bread. As I neared upon Union Street I see several pan racks with loaves waiting to be sent off on their way. I died!
So today, on my day off...I woke up a little too early for the small amount of sleep I had with one thing in mind...bread adventure. I'm usually really good at order...no fooling around get down to business. But...I.LOVE.BREAD. No if's and's or but's about it. But it's just me and my man at the casa so I couldn't go too crazy.
$14.50 = 1 anisette toast with almond and chocolate, 1 croissant (light but a little denser than I have had before. Not greasy at all and definitely enjoyable.), LARD BREAD (this is up there with the HOLY GRAIL of bread. who DOESN'T LOVE cured meat in their bread?!) and a small Pane Italiano loaf.
I have yet to consume everything at this moment for fear of food coma overload. I will revise post upon consumption of all goods.
Get thee to the bakery asap!

Take a deep breath once you enter Mazzola's doors and your screwed. You came in for some bread but the smell won't let you leave without something more. Sometimes, just sometimes I allow myself to buy a cookie or two or a coffee here and they are as good as they smell. The bread (also as wonderful as it smells) comes in quite a few varieties. I love their garlic bagette. This is embedded with chopped garlic throughout the loaf... it is oh so wonderful and crispy.

4.5 stars...great bakery by any standard. They've got every type of bread you could want from a NY bakery and many sweet baked goods as well. The place is just a shop, no place to sit or enjoy anything. The best thing about having this place down the street is anytime you're walking by in the evening the smells of the bread baking is incredible. I wish they had a bigger spot but this really is a hidden gem, the kind of place that makes you happy that you live in the neighborhood.
