I'm wavering... the food is about 3 stars, but the service was a 4.5, so I went with 4 stars.

I went here on Saturday night with family friends from out of town who are huge college football fans. Decision maker (he was paying) = my friend's dad. He wanted to watch the Fresno vs. Wisconsin college match-up (they're UofHawaii fans and cheer for the WAC) and for some reason, the staff at the Hilton Garden Inn in Lake O couldn't make ESPN 2 work in our room.

Here's how the "where do we eat?" conversation went:

Me: So, we've narrowed our choices down to Mazatlan or The Sports Page.
Friend's mom: Why two places?
Me: Well, we have to find out if it is more important to watch the game, or eat Mexican food.
Friend: Dad, do you want eat at a Mexican place, or at a sports bar?
Friend's dad: Well, it'd be best if the Mexican place had a sports bar.
*Laughter*
Friend's sister's BF calls Mazatlan: Do you have a bar? *pause* Is there a TV in the bar? *pause* Do you get ESPN 2? *pause* We might be there to watch the game. *Hangs up.*
Friend's Dad: So, let's go!

We got to Mazatlan and immediately headed to the Cantina where the game was already on. They let us pull some tables together and it was perfect.

The bartender was great. He was also our server (they have a full menu in the bar) and he waited until commercial breaks to take our orders and check on us. He was also cool about us staying until almost closing to watch the end of the game. (Fresno lost, so it was sad.)

I totally got jammed because I don't know how to order Mexican food and I didn't order the dish that I thought I was ordering. But, my Chile Colorado platter was pretty good. Everyone seemed to enjoy their food. It came very quickly and everyone else got what they were expecting. The strawberry margaritas were great - all flavors were well balanced! And others seemed happy with their bloody marys - although one had 3 olives and one had 2 - there was almost a fight (haha, just kidding).

All-in-all it was a good place for us. I don't know much about Mexican food (I thought I was getting a burrito, not a platter), but this place satisfied and didn't leave anyone feeling ill later. There were plenty of leftovers for the girls, and the guys said they were full.

I'd probably go again if someone else wanted to go, but I don't think I'd make a special trip here. That said, their service was great and my friends were impressed (they're sticklers for good customer service). Best part: .. we were able to fulfill the wishes of the guy who treated us all to dinner!

My boyfriend and I go to Mazatlan at least twice a month. Great food, great margaritas, awesome FAST FAST FAST service, and I dig that you get beans to dip your chips in, as well as delicious salsa.

I can complain about the salt content in the food. Always parched after my chili verde. So good though. Cannot help myself.

The restaurant is across the street from the Tigard 11 Cinemas and makes for a great date night.

Fool me once, shame on you... fool me twice, shame on me.  Shame on me for going to this place a second time. The first time someone brought me here, it was with the alluring promise of delicious fajitas.  WRONG.  Can you say "sauce made from packet of seasoning?" I never take restaurant or food suggestions from that "friend" anymore.  The second time was today.  My coworkers decided to go out to lunch here and invited me along. Mistake 1: I said yes.  Mistake 2: I ate the food.

This is the kind of Mexican food I try my best to avoid.  The food looks and tastes nothing like the food in Mexico does.  Its over-cheesed, over-sauced, and under-good.  The refried beans are like paste.  The tortillas lack imagination.  They serve their burritos (I know, burritos are more tex mex than mex) with the beans and rice on the inside, and the salsa and guac on the outside.  I prefer mine made the opposite way: meat, salsa, guac on the inside, no beans, no rice. They agreed to put the beans/rice on the outside, but couldn't bring themselves to put the salsa and guac on the inside. Oh well, I said, as I choked down the nasty slop that is this food.

If you like fake American-Mexican food, you'll love this place.  Put your party hat on and get ready for some cheezy, pasty-bean gorgefest. If you respect yourself enough to put good food in your gullet, then drive about 4 blocks further south to Tres Hermanos and pay half the price for 10-times the quality.
