Neighborhood: Galleria/UptownWe went for the Sunday buffet. Not breathtaking cuisine by any means, but for us westerners, the people-watching was worth it. Ladies in lovely saris; handsome, dark-eyed men; beautiful children. Many giant families dining together. Good reminder of how ethnic Houston is.
I do recommend the palak paneer and the naan. And it's fun to stand in line with small children for mango soft-serve ice cream.

I am not sure if they offer a la carte or only buffet, but everytime we've gone, it's buffet. When we've gone, it's usually Sundays or Saturdays, and the place is busy. We always hope there's not a wedding reception or birthday party there because it can take forever in the line for food! We're impatient pigs, what can I say?
I have truly come to enjoy the palak paneer, vadas, and mango ice cream. I don't care for much else, because the dishes are just so rich. I haven't really liked the tandoori chicken but have liked the chili chicken on occasion.
For us, it's been hit or miss. For my husband, it's always a hit. For me, it's almost always a miss except for the dishes I mentioned above.
I am only giving this place three stars because most of the food is simply "pretty good." However, there are a few reasons I would recommend you go there anyway, and why we go there quite often.
1. Palak paneer. I could go there and eat only that, naan, and mango ice cream, and be perfectly happy.
2. It's a buffet, which means that if you find something you like there, you can have as much of it as you want.
3. The naan and dosa are always fresh and plentiful, and very tasty.
4. They have mango soft-serve ice cream that is, quite frankly, out of this world. Holy cow is it good.
I don't much get into the goat, the butter chicken is good but rich (but if you must have meat that is the way to go) and actually the aloo gobi (potato and cauliflower with lots of flavor) is another dish that I usually load up on.
I didn't realize the buffet was only at lunch, but I will believe the previous reviewer since I have only ever been there at lunch. It's good for big groups of people, too, since they have a lot of room and it's a flat rate so they don't mind splitting up the bill.
More importantly, my Indian coworkers really love it. That's really important. :P

On the better end of Indian restaurants in Houston. My criterion of mango lassi: a little sweet but very mango tasting. raita was ok, but neither it nor the lassi were made with homemade curds (the only positive i think in retrospect for balaji bhavan).
Idli (rice flour cakes) with coconut chutney and sambar - spicy and fresh.
goat biryani - came with extra chutneys, but goat wasn't particularly goat tasting (a potentially good thing for those of us who don't like goat very much). very good basmati rice.
the lamb, tasted like lamb and was tender.
mango pickle was sweet like jam - not the sour/spicy kind. i didn't like it.
palaak/saag paneer. overly salty, but ok.
poori - very good, a little thick dough but crisply and freshly fried.
excellent chili pepper "poppers".
big dining room.
i am definitely coming back to try more of the southern indian fare.
wait staff is friendly. don't eat after 9pm though because they really want to go home by 9.45. they progressively turn off the lights.
