Decent prices. Like the dollar menu, it was worth depending on what you favor. This restaurant draws good crowds, so I felt a bit cramped at my table.
Decent sushi. Service was good. I didn't expect anything spectacular anyways.
A-OK.

I think the people who gave it one or two stars are being too harsh.
I originally wanted to give it only 3 stars but really wanted to bump the rating up. So hence the 4 stars.

I came here on a lunch date last Friday and I really liked my experience at May's Place.

The waiters are all very friendly and the restaurant was clean and quiet. The 50% off menu is definitely what you should come here to eat. I got French Kiss Maki and it was a huge roll. It takes 4 bites to finish one piece.

While I have had better sushi, I am not complaining because it was 50% off and it tasted great.

I think people go to May's Place really for their 50% menu.  Honestly, the place is like a hit or miss.  At times you may have great sushi, other times you may get some mediocre sushi.

I think this place is still worthy of going.  Most of the times, the sushi is pretty fresh and the atmosphere is very college-like.  Their specialty sushi is pretty good and cheap as well. Overall, a good cheap sushi place.  You pay for what you get.

I haven't tried their other dishes and will definitely go back for their cheap sushi and alllllllcccoooohooollll.

I love love love this place! I must eat there about 4 times a week!

The servers are very friendly, and I usually order their Cirashi. It ends up being about $10 after the %50 discount. I also always order a Kimchi off of their Dollar menu which I truly enjoy.

The atmosphere is fun and lively, and am rarely disappointed. \

Sometimes the Cirashi comes out a little different, but it's just the chef makin decisions!

Been going there for 7 years and don't plan on stopping.

This is the place I go to whenever I need a sushi "fix." I bring friends and family here all the time. Can't go wrong with the 50% off deal.

Their sushi is fusion style. Meaning they have weird names and lots of sauce on top. Sashimi is fresh and my favorite is the white tuna.

They also have a nigori sake that i love to order for $7.

Cheap sushi and booze yay!

Don't know why this place has so few stars? So i'm giving it a 5 just to boost it up!

They have a crazy crazy long menu and one with 50% off? It gets a little packed, and there's a bit of a wait, but the sushi itself was pretty stellar. Some really creative rolls. Quick enough service. I had the tuna/avocado salad which I loved. People need to check this place out!

Came here on a Tuesday night, got full on sushi, had four draft beers among the two of us and the bill didn't break 30 bucks. The sushi was good, the beer was good and we saw a random celebrity getting attacked by paparazzi as she walked out. Food: check. Drink: check. Entertainment: check.

The service was pretty lousy however, half of our time there was spent waiting for them to take our dirty plates and give us our bill/cash back. But for half price sushi and beers, I'm willing to take it.

I came here one night for the 50% off sushi.  Usually at places like these I find that the cooked sushi tastes best.  I got tempura rolls and crab rolls.  We also ordered one of their special meals.  The servings were pretty big so no complaining there.  When the sushi came out, I noticed it was the half rolls and not the whole rolls that I typically see at other sushi places, so maybe that's why they have the 50% off.  Sneaky.  Regardless, decently price.  Flavors are mediocre, just depends on what you get and what night you go.  The warm saki was amazing and cheap!

On my way out, I saw some tables with large platters of the dollar menu.  I think that's the way to go next time.  Just pick a large variety of things off the dollar menu and piece together to make a meal.

Keep in mind, I'm not a sushi expert, just a casual eater.  Came here this morning for lunch.  Spend over $15 and you get 50% off.  There's even a dollar menu!  The sushi was not half bad.  I did come right when it opened so perhaps I had the freshest stuff.  I tried the Udon Noodle (mediocre), with their sashimi (I liked), Godzilla Roll (Tasty), Fried Gyoza, Seafood Croquette (sp?), fried shrimp, spam masubi (yum).  And no, I did not eat all of that by myself.

The service was okay I suppose.  They took our order surely enough and brought the food out in a timely manner but that's the only time I saw any wait staff.  No water refills and they never came to ask if we needed anything.  Makes me wonder how the service would be when they are packed since my friend and I and another single table were the only guests in at that time.

All in all, their dollar menu is winner status.  If you're in the East Village area and want to have some cheap sushi, this is a good option.

Formerly Sushi Park.

Unremarkable and not really worth mentioning.  If you know ANYTHING about sushi and what REAL sushi is, you would not eat here.

The fish was not fresh and was discolored.  The rice was so-so.

You get for what you pay for. Nuff said...

- overall rating: 2.5
- 50% off sushi if you order more than $15
- mediocre sushi at best
- my miso soup was basically seaweed water, lacking substance and flavor
- personable staff
- LOVED Sushi Park, food, owner, staff and all . . .but now that they've moved to Long Island, this replacement is far from the place I once called my go-to sushi place

My fav place in NYC to hit up sushi.  The food is good and amazingly priced!  Can cater for larger parties which is also nice.

I can't say I've always had the best service in the place.  Sometimes crowded(especially at dinner time and weekends).. have had to wait for a table many times and even after being seated have sat up to 45 minutes before walking out and giving up that a server would ever come to us.

Overall, I like the place and continue to go there for the good inexpensive food.

50% off sushi for each person who orders $14.95 of the original price.  The sushi is ok but it's not the freshest or the best tasting sushi around.  People probably go because of the price.

They have these combo dinners where you can get a few pieces of sushi and udon noodles for about $10 or so.  Also happy hour comes with beer also for a pretty cheap price.

Everytime I go it's super packed.  I guess the secret is out and other people really love this place too.

I went here today after starving all day.  The outside looked all colorful and appealing. The menu also looked inviting. It wasn't until after I ordered and had a taste that my smile turned upside down.  I ordered takoyaki, but to my surprise it wasn't even fresh.  If ur a fan of takoyaki then u would definitely taste the difference.  It was one of the premade ones that u can buy at the store.  I also ordered galbi and it was drowning in oil.  Really nasty. My brother and bf ordered the katsu and that also had a bad sour taste.  Overall, very disappointed.  Btw this is not an authentic Japanese restaurant.

50% off most of their menu items.

but i admit, it's not the most delicious thing ever, but it's still do-able, or rather "eat-able." their spicy combo and tempura udon was good. their jumbo one with like mango chutney sauce was too many flavors all at once. it wasn't that great. it looks good but there is a chaotic taste in your mouth when you eat it. i say with sushi, go with simple. it's best. :))

anyways, i went pretty late at night but it was crowded. i think it was a bunch of drunk people who spent too much money already on drinks and wanted to fulfill their yearning hunger with some cheap sushi. i do believe this place would hit he spot. oh and a pitcher of beer is just $8. pretty cheap!

i didnt know it was a toy store on the second floor. how asiany, huh? haha. it's cute though.

Good sushi, great prices. They recently underwent some menu changes when they changed their name from sushi park. They seem to have a lot more hot dishes now and combos. They also have incorporated Korean food to their menu.

This us a solid place for sushi and they now have a dollar menu sun - thurs so it is definitely nice to your wallet in these trying times.

If I confess that I had never heard of the dollar menu, will that reveal that I've been living under a rock?  Seriously, yelp *does* encourage me to get out more.

This place wins hands down with it's dollar menu.  Service is a little slow.  And food taste is no comparison to Go on St Marks or Chiyono on 6th street, it's your sort of quick and generic Japanese restaurant.  But did I tell you about the dollar menu?  (Sun through Thu...)

I came here for a dinner date after leaving work at 8:45pm on a Friday night.  It was quite crowded and the price is very reasonable.  There were a lot of non-Asian patrons who nearly dominated the entire restaurant.  I believe the bulk of non-Asian patrons are from NYU.  My dinner date and I were trying to have a conversation as he is intrigue with my life (both socially, personal, and career) when suddenly one table filled with non-Asian patrons were extremely rowdy.  They were loud by banging on the table and yelling at the wait staff to place their orders.  Such rowdyness and manners require a crash course from Emily Post "Etiquette", Kay West's "How to Raise a Gentleman," and Kate Spade's "Manners."

The service is somewhat attentive, thus the four stars rating, although the food is good.  The plum wine is served in a unique yet very Japanese style cup.

I like this place because they have a wide selection of food and for a pretty decent price.  I especially love the dollar menu....so I can get a variety of stuff.  I ordered the aloha something...with spam on rice, which I recommend.  And the seafood croquette which was good....but come on, anything fried is good. I also got 5 pieces of gyoza for $1..they were decent.

The service here is SUPER slow.  I asked for my gyoza dipping sauce b/c they didn't give me any...the guy said ok..but never came back. I had to ask another waiter to get it for me.  Then we asked for the check and that took about 10 minutes.  It was a wee bit annoying.

// oh yea dollar menu deal is only sunday to thursday.

Who knew that on Tues @ 9pm this was the place to be?!  It must be their crazy specials: $10-12 on Sun-Thurs gets you entree + noodles + salad + sake/beer.  Don't come when it's peak time though.  Although every other experience I've had here has been great, I was annoyed the waitress didn't bother to offer us the sake/beer that comes with my meal (I look youthful beyond my years ;-) and we had to ask for it ourselves.  They were understaffed and it was near impossible to catch the waitress.  AC is barely on given the 90+ day.  Food wasn't as good as it normally is: over-salted unagi rolls, over-seasoned udon broth.  Also tried the $1 special takoyaki - small, soggy, terrible.  They were definitely overwhelmed.  Do yourself a favor and take advantage of May's Place for all it's worth (50% off ok-sushi), but not when the place is packed.

I'm a bit biased because I've spent half a year in Japan. For the price (half off on sushi) and the different other options available (e.g. Oden, gyoza, etc), it's not a bad place to go to when you want to expose yourself to what is in japanese cuisine. But I've definitely had better in NYC.

I don't generally drink beer, but my 2 friends and I did share a pitcher of Sapporo (which made me feel a little nostalgic).

After a while, all the run-of-the-mill sushi places in the city start looking the same. That's not to say that May's Place isn't good, just that it doesn't really stand out from the large pack. It's got that oddly kitschy quasi-Japanese decor, and though it's rather large, there isn't much room between the tables as it was crowded even on a Wednesday evening. However, there is the 50% off sushi special, which was quite a surprise when we got our check, as the directions about what, exactly, qualified were incredibly vague.

In any event, getting that sheer amount of sushi at 50% off is a good deal no matter which way you look at it. I think all of my friends had the spice combo, which they all devoured and seemed to enjoy. Nobody was raving, but at the same time, at these prices, there's not much to complain about. There is indeed a huge selection of food here, so much so that the menu is overwhelming; don't be shy to ask for more time, as the servers are generally nice. They're not the speediest bunch, as others have noted, but they also aren't so slow that your food is cold when it gets to you.

Oh, about my food! I had chicken negimaki and steamed dumplings. The chicken was tender and juicy, and the dumplings were fresh and not too doughy. However, especially compared to my friends' dishes, I thought the portions were a little on the small side, particularly the chicken, But, as I said, the dishes were hot, even though I had ordered after everyone else had on account of sleep deprivation and the imbibing of vodka.

Bathroom Grade: 2/10. Well, this is a special case. The bathrooms reminded me of outdoor changing stands at some lake in the woods, and there are only two singles, which, for a place this size, is kind of cruel. I actually ended up using the men's room because the line for the women's room was entirely too long, so here's what you can expect boys: no toilet paper, a grimy floor, trash piled up behind and around the toilet, and very little light. At least the graffiti on the door provides some light reading while you're doing your business.

My boyfriend and I frequent this place because of their cheap sake, their $1 menu at lunchtime, and their hearty lunch & dinner specials.  Beware - they do skimp on their meat in their bulgogi - you'll get a pile of onions and not too much beef.  However, it does taste pretty good - I've never had a terrible meal here, but I've never had a superb one either.

The food is decent, fish is fresh, prices are cheap for New York, service is pretty quick, and the ambiance is spacious and pleasant. They also have a pretty extensive menu of Japanese and Korean food. It's not a place I'd recommend traveling too far to try but it's definitely a reliable spot if you're in the neighborhood.  It's also good for groups since there's plenty of choices on the menu, lots of seating, and the sake is cheap.

Yet another one of the many 50% off sushi places around St. Marks. This one isn't bad, the sushi is quite good and you get a decent amount, but it's also not the best sushi I've ever had. One of the perks that sets this place apart is the $1 menu of small side plates. However, what sets it apart on the negative side is that when I asked if I could get my leftover sushi boxed up to-go, they said it would be a $2 charge. Um, who does that?

So I decided to try this place one day when Zen was so crowded that there were no seats.  I sat with friends and tried some of their dollar menu items.  The fish wasn't bad, it wasn't M and M melt in your mouth amazing either.  There was something off about the edamame.  The tables were spaced out so that I wasn't all up in anyone's conversation.

My opinion of this place isn't clear yet.  So May, this won't be a one night stand, not because you impressed me, but more because, on a night when there were no other options, you didn't send me home doing the walk of shame.

I came here for the second time after watching "I'm Just Not that Into You," which is a mantra I've come to be fond of, across all scenarios, but I digress.

As a vegetarian, finding good sushi is as difficult as it is for Paris Hilton to keep her underwear on. That said, this place is very underwhelming. I get it, sushi chefs, what's the point in rolling some nori, grated vegetables, and white rice? And the little appetizers proffering noodles come in minuscule quantities for too much money.

Also, in my experience, the 50% off label only applied if each person was spending at least fifteen dollars. Then again, there were only three of us.

If your sushi can't get my rocks off, then I'm just not that into you.

My boyfriend and I came to May's Place for lunch today because of the 50% off sushi and he really wanted to eat sushi. The service was horrendous - I can't even think of anything good about the service. They didn't get us water until we asked. They didn't refill the water or tea when they were empty. They didn't come take our order until I spoke up and gave them a really dirty look (which I am a very nice person). They didn't come to get our check so my boyfriend switched the credit card for cash and we left. This place is horrible - there were only a couple other people there, but we were the ones that were continually ignored.

We had the spicy combo with salad and a specialty roll. Usually I'd just pig out on sushi because it's so yummy, but I didn't like any of it. This is absolutely no competition for Zen. I let my boyfriend eat most of it and I just ate enough to conquer my hunger. We also had gyoza off the dollar menu, but that was deep fried and tasted a bit weird. The salad dressing was really sweet and watery. I did not like this place, but my boyfriend liked the food so 2 stars.

I have been coming here since it was Sushi Park.  It is a decent size place and gets very crowded on Friday and Saturday nights but I never have a problem getting a table.  I usually get the rolls or sashimi and they say it is half price, but really you save only about 20-30 % of the value if you look at the full price and the amount of food you get.  The service is sporadic, but this is not a place you go for service.  Just make sure you just ask for everything you need the one or two times they come to your table or just be very good at flagging them down from across the place.

They have a decent selection of sakes.

I've always known this place as Toy sushi because of Toy Tokyo next door.  It was last week that I realized it's called May's Place.  Oh well, now I know.  I've been bringing my friends here for years for their 50% off sushi.  They have pretty good combinations but note that you have to order $14.95 in sushi in order to get the 50% off.  They have an additional sushi list which is on the stand on the table and not part of the menu.  Their sushi is pretty good but not excellent.

They have appetizers, including a $1 menu which is available Sundays to Thursdays.  They also have some Korean, Japanese dishes.  This place gets pretty packed on the weekends but since it's pretty big, you don't have to wait too long to be seated.

God, this place was completely underwhelming.
We got suckered in because we saw a sign outside that said 50% off sushi.  Big mistake.  I got the japchae which was $6 but all I got was this small appetizer plate with so little noodles I could have counted all of them in one hand.  If you want 50% off the sushi, you have to order at least $14.95 per person.  The sushi rolls weren't that special.  Just the typical house rolls.

We get the check, give them our money and they didn't even give us our change back!  I had to ask for it.  Umm, thanks jerks but I didn't say you could keep it.  After we paid, my friends waited at the table while I went to the bathroom.  Right when I get back, one of the waiters comes up to us and asks us to leave because there are people waiting outside.  Pretty rude considering how I saw a table open on my way out.  It's ok, I wanted to leave anyways..wasn't even worth my time

As sad as I am to admit it, I would come back here again.  The food, was good.  The octopus, was eerily fresh.  Their special rolls were delightful.

I was scared when I saw they were having half-price sushi, but it was good.  I don't know what it is about this place, but something was amiss for me.  It wasn't the Koreans running the shop, nope.  It wasn't the fact that I felt like I was sitting outside even though I was inside.  Maybe it was the piece of octopus on the menu being $4, but only being charged $1 for the freshest piece of tako I've ever had.

I walked in thinking, "here we go, 1/2 price sushi" and  I walked out saying "it was good, wasn't it?"

The service was a little spotty at times, but good for NYC.  Check it out and decide for yourself.  I just haven't figured this place out in my head as of yet.

This place gets four stars simply for having a happy hour until 11:30pm, a great $1 menu and 50% off dinner combos!!

Not to mention the Kalbi Jim is oh so mashesoyo!~
The soba was okay, chicken katsu was pretty good, sushi was a tad rank but what you would expect from a cheap fushion place, and the green tea ice cream was fantastic!

++'s
Fast service
half-off bottles of sake
pretty tasty food
super cheap
open late
good location

I had walked by this place before, to my surprise there was actually room to sit down there on a Thursday night.  Various kinds of people were in this nicely sized restaurant down near st marks.  Their sign outside that advertises their 50% off sushi seems to make everyone want to come in!
Also to my surprise they have a $1 menu during sun-thurs I believe .
VERY GOOD. two spring rolls for $1? OR COARSE. I also got some kimchi for $1..but didnt eat much of it..WAY TOO MUCH PEPPER.
For my self I got the chickendon. with a side of udon noodles..
The rice was a bit dry..the noodles were good~ My bf had the three roll combo with a cali roll, tuna and salmon.  He said his was good, mine was just decent.
I suppose I might come back just to get the sushi...
When we got the bill, the place forgot to take the 50% off the sushi..
I feel like they try to rip people off??:?

I am pretty sure this isn't the best sushi/sashimi joint the city has to offer.  Sure their sashimi is not always on point.  There are days when the fish is warm and days when the fish is cold(defrosting, perhaps?).  Luckily for the most part, it's decent.  The dollar menu is cool - the aged tofu is a great appetizer when accompanied with the salad with miso dressing.  And I enjoy sipping their house tea.  Service has never really been a problem, but getting their attention can sometimes be a bit difficult, esp. on their busy days.  This place is good enough to give me my spontaneous Japanese fix.

The sushi here is really good and I like their special rolls.  Everything I've tried here tasted pretty good and the half off sushi deal is amazing.  Service could have been better, but no big complaints.

I've come here twice with a group of 4 once and a group of 7.  Seating was readily available both times.

It always takes so long to order because of its half off sushi deal.  The waiters are happy to accommodate.   The food came out pretty quickly both times.  However, the service was sort of slow, which was bad, considering the place wasn't even busy.

This is definitely a place to go with a group of friends for good sushi with a great price tag.

it's nostalgia that brings me back here, but they've finally used up what was left of the sushi park goodwill.  inch-long bone in a hamachi roll.  could have impaled myself.

this will be removed from my restaurant rotation.  there are way too many japanese places in the area that can serve cheap rolls without drawing blood.

good for random fried snacks sunday to thursday.  but warning to all who go for the fish.  that is all.

Want to get tanked on sake?  Usually, after a round of toy shopping in Toy Tokyo, I go into this restaurant.  It is a decent, reliable Japanese restaurant.  It's not bad, and it's not Michelin-rated food either.  The food is tasty, and great to fill your stomach with.  It's there for you if you feel tired or if you're craving Japanese food in the middle of the night.

When my friends and I were searching for Japanese restaurants after our original choice was too crowded, we chose this one.  I had the chicken katsu which was pretty good.  And the sake is cheap there.  Be careful of your friends when they go there, they might drink a lot of sake and be red-faced the whole night.  And yes, they will come back to this   restaurant later on down the line too.

Seems like they're changing their pricing due to the economy but still a good bang for your buck. Service is attentive and helpful, variety of choices and the fish has always been fresh when I've gone.

My friends and I have been going here since they were Sushi Park.
Sad to say, but their service just worsens over the years. But their food has been able to remain the same...good and filling, just not extraordinary.

The combos is always a safe choice, though sometimes they skim on the fish of the sushi roll, or they were just poorly made...
The karaage is passable...
One of my favorite dishes there is the Kimchi Udon. Unfortunately, they're usually not as spicy as I'd like them to be, but they're still quite good for the price.

And Cheap sake.

P.S- be wary of unbalanced tables.

When I come here I feel like I'm in a sardine can, the tables are so close together there's hardly any room for the server to reach you. The Kirin pitcher is always flat and in the summer the word air conditioning is nonexistent. But yet every visit to NYC I end up eating here. Why? Two reasons:

1. It's CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP!
Just because it's cheap doesn't mean it's bad either. For the price, the portions are huge and the fish is pretty decent. Actually, it's better than 90% of the sushi restaurants that charge more in DC.

2. The cute Asian servers walking around in school uniform outfit. Don't get me wrong there are some not so cute ones; it just means you came on a bad day.
