Mayflower Buffet
1 review for Mayflower Buffet
My dad, brother and I came to this place on August 24, 2009. We drove by this place a couple of days before and I said "No way". We are Chinese and there most likely is not going to be a good Asian buffet here in Fairbanks. We have been to many Asian buffets in Northern California and I can definitely tell the difference. You have to have a good sized population to support a good tasting buffet otherwise you will get recycled food (recooked).
There were not too many cars outside but enough to know there were customers besides the employee's cars. Ok, we were practically forced to go here by our dad so I dragged myself in . . . I hung my head low; took a deep breath and entered. We found a decent booth to sit in and I told them to go ahead and get their food while I gave my stomach a rest before going to the buffet. They came back with their plates and I went up to get my plate. I pick a clean plate and looked down the sad aisles of food . . . hmmm, I can't eat this or that . . . I guess I can eat a little of this. It is sad . . . I get enough to go back and sit down . . .
The food is pathetic compared to most Asian buffets back home but it is edible. There is something to eat for everybody although some items I would not touch. Some were definitely old looking and/or recooked from some other time zone. I did go up to find some more edible items after consuming the first plate.
The place is big enough to hold quite a few people but a little out of the way. It is not hard to get to but not in a normal place where restaurants normally are. I knew we were in trouble when there are zero asians in an asian restaurant but I survived. Maybe it was a slow night or the economy is bad but only about 10-15 people were eating there but maybe it is because it was Monday . . .
Pros:
The price is actually low for being in Alaska and there is a large selection of food available. Plenty of space to spread out.
Cons:
Food is geared more for non-Asians but if you miss Chinese; some sushi; etc; you can get refilled here.
I really doubt I will ever come back here if I ever come back to Fairbanks. I hope they survive and get more customers since some people will like the food and the price is very low for Alaska.
Food: D for Asians; C+ for non
Cleanliness: C
Price: A
Location: C-
I do recommend that you try the place and give it a fair chance. You get a good selection of food and all you can eat for a low price. It is just not for me . . . check it out!
