The only use I have for this place is to take my packages. Other than that I have to wonder how they make money since I only see people come in to buy paint or get keys made. I bought some cleaning products once and the bottles were caked with dust. Um why? Don't people clean their homes. Anyway the owner is nice in a syrupy, uber-polite way but his arrogance gets the best of him when he lights up one of his cigars inside. That's just gross.
But if you have a kid under 5 then MayDay could be a hit around Xmas time when he decorates the place and there's a Santa outside. Other than that it's hit or miss for me. Oh and if you want to use a credit card there's a $10 which is BS. I'd never spend THAT much in there.
Don't know whatchur talkin bout. Jerry is fantastic. My boyfriend and I recently moved from the west coast into a fixer-upper rental apartment a few blocks from Mayday. We have been 3 times for various needs in our new shanty- like when the door knob fell off every time we tried to leave home, or when the faucet began falling off while doing dishes, or when we wanted tips on how not to attract the cockroach we saw hanging out in our lobby... Jerry has so far had great advice for all our needs- just leave yourself ample time for his tutorials. Plus, if you need packages sent, but are never home to receive them, he will receive them for you to be picked up at his store, for a just few bucks.
It's true it's not the most glamorous of hardware stores, but they've had everything we've needed so far, and his help has made up for it.
I don't know how many owners it has, but I went in there looking for lighter fluid once - is it weird to ask for lighter fluid at a hardware store??
And the guy behind the counter - late 40s, gray hair, white - seemed irritated that I had a question that interrupted his conversation with his friend. I asked him if they had lighter fluid. And then proceeded to say in an extremely condescending manner, "Um, NO...."
My roommate says he is also like this to her, so I thought maybe he's just rude to everyone, but my tour partner says he's always really really really nice to him, so I figure he is probably sexist. Won't wanna go there again.

History
Established in 1964
As a parochial grammar school student going home to change my clothes after school I was being chased by other neigborhood kids. I ran into the nearest store for a safe haven. The owner told me I couldn't remain in his store unless I made myself useful. He put a broom in my hand.
Now I own the place.
Meet the Business Owner: Jerry W.
I grew up in this Prospect Heights neighborhood. Many of my customers have been my neighbor for most of our lives.
I am a graduate of St. Teresa's Grammar School, St. Augustine High School and Baruch College. My most cherished degree was earned in the School of Hard Knocks.
I worked in this hardware store since 1966 and became co-owner 10 years later.
I teach Home Repair classes at Medgar Evers College and provide individual instruction in-store on an assortment of home repair techniques.
Working in this hardware store is not my job. It is my life's work.
