I am going to keep it short and sweet. The Mayan Palace is awesome. I am not saying this food is literally passed down from Mayan Gods to my table, nor am I saying their drinks are the nectar of the Gods, but for real- this place is awesome. Tuesdays and Thursays are half price margaritas, and its a great deal. The food is the perfect compliment to their tasty liquid delights, and to top it all off the service is incredible. I am not ashamed to say I am a regular, and they know me by name there- its a worthy accomplishment!
So, go to Mayan, eat and drink up! Ask for Alberto or Augustine (GREAT servers) -

Went here on a Sunday night when I didn't think it would be too bustling, but boy did it pick up!
I walked into a tightly packed, dimly lit front seating room to be disappointed at the lack of seats and uncomfortable proximity of the tables. As I looked around with a scared look on my face the waiter notified me there was a backroom that I could sit in as well. Phew!
The backroom was bigger than the front and a little more spacious. The decor is nothing special, but the fact that people were there and constantly coming in made me believe that the food must be good enough to keep people coming back!
The the chips, salsa and guac were really nice. The red sangria was great too--sweet just the way I like it!
The combo plate #1 with a torta, taco and enchilada were good. The meat was a little dry, but the toppings were nice.
My boo got a burrito with shredded beef. UNREAL. I would definitely recommend this.
The service was nice. A little pushy on drinks, but still quite nice.
I probably won't return, but I'm glad I gave it a shot considering I've walked past it a zillion times! -
Review from Keely B.
I made plans to meet a friend for dinner at the Mayan Palace. I called Saturday afternoon for a same-day reservation and had no trouble at all, which was great. When I arrived, I was directed down a long, narrow, creepy hallway. I sort of felt like I was being sent to my death, because there's a dining room in front and the person who practically pushed me through the door into the hallway didn't offer any explanation and closed the door tightly behind me. The hallway (or tunnel) did eventually lead to a secret dining room.
Once I was certain I was going to live, I perused the menu and ordered margaritas for my companion (who was running late) and myself. I am very partial to Cesar's margaritas, so I was prepared to be disappointed. However, I was pleasantly surprised. I ordered the Patron margarita, mango flavor. It was very smooth and quite tasty, but for $12.50 I could have gotten twice the margarita at Cesar's.
I ordered the chicken flautas, which were good but a touch overdone. Not tooth-chipping hard, but a few seconds less in the deep fryer would have made them that much better. The rice and beans had fantastic flavor! My friend had a quesadilla that she seemed to enjoy. We finished up by sharing the fried ice cream, which was pretty comparable to, say, Chi-Chi's (does that place still exist?). -

Not sure where all these rave reviews are coming from. This was the most average Mexican restaurant I've ever been to. Not terrible but certainly not great. It was also pricey for what you get. Plus side our server was nice and attentive.

Frankly, I've very surprised of the consistently good reviews this place gets. The food was ok, the service was pretty good, but I didn't find anything about the restaurant very remarkable. I definitely don't see myself returning on my own.

Great margaritas! We had the tamarind margaritas, and they were strong and delicious. But they are expensive, I guess the Tue and Thu half off special would be a great deal but we did not know about that before we went there. Would love to come here on Tue or Thu just for the margaritas.
I had the tacos (Veggie and Fish) - they were delicious and fresh made with great quality ingredients. The fish tacos are the bomb!! -

Its good but I don't understand the pricing!!
I had a great evening here. I really did. Cozy little place, nice atmosphere. I was asking my friend if we should get a pitcher of their house margarita... and was totally stunned to hear that its $39 (5 glasses) for their cheapest option for a large pitcher while its $23 for a small one (3 glasses). Then I actually started to look at the menu and everything seemed so over-priced. Unhindered, we ordered a combo of enchilada, chile relleno n taco; Veggie enchilada and 4 tacos. The food was delicious, don't get me wrong but I just don't get the pricing. -

I went there my first time with a few of my friends and basically the food was very good, but OVERPRICED!!! It's one of those types of restaurants that you would basically visit once a month, not weekly. I am happy with the food and service, but pricing is just not for me.

Two years ago I stumbled upon this place on new years eve which also happened to be half price margarita night (every tuesday, thursday). This coincidence turned out to be a recipe for pure awesomeness. I tried the house mango margarita and lime margarita which were both amazing for amazing prices. That night, I also had the best skirt steak in my entire life and I know my skirt steak like I know my chicago bears trivia. Cooked perfectly medium, it served as a perfect compliment to my increasingly tipsy state of mind.
Since that fateful evening, I have been back multiple times to this place. Try to the Steak Diablo, the Skirt Steak, and also if you feel like a pork night, the carnitas. If you happen to be vegetarian, my girlfriend always gets the vegetarian enchiladas which I always steal one off her plate. A vegetarian dish passing the stringent requirements of a strict carnivore is always a good sign. Prices are very reasonable for the quality of food.
The only downside is having to sit in the back sometimes. I only complain since years and years of playing NES and now modern warfare 3 has dimmed my visual acuity so it's hard to see in such low light. However understand this is a common problem I have at many restaurants and other social establishments.
If you're looking for good mexican food with awesome margaritas, it doesn't get much better than this -

Ahhh Mayan Palace - it's about time I review you! Fellow yelpers reading this - understand that this is some of the best Mexican food you will find short of Pilsen! Also if you happen to be in the mood for mexican on say a random tuesday or thursday - they do HALF PRICE margaritas - ALL DAY on these days!!! Want to try something unique? Their tamarind margaritas rock! and they also have strawberry, peach, pineapple, etc.
Overall the staff is kind, the ambiance is spot on, and the food and drinks are delish. I've been all over and nothing compares - so if you haven't been here yet - make a plan and make it happen! -

Best margarita special in the city! On tuesdays and thursdays all house margaritas are 1/2 price. This is great if you like a traditional lime and salt margarita like my husband or if you prefer a frozen tamarindo margarita like me. I've tried most of the flavors and I'm never disappointed.
The food is great, too. They have the best fish tacos I've had in Chicago. I've lived in Florida and So Cal so my standards for fish tacos are pretty high. The portions are huge, too. Everyone leaves with a nice buzz and a full belly. If you love margaritas and good Mexican food then check this place out. My only issue is that the dining room is kind of small. I wish they'd expand and open up a bigger bar area for people who just want drinks or a snack. -

I nth the margarita praise. And raise mm.mm. good poblano mole enchiladas.
However, $14 for enchiladas?! ARE YOU SERIOUS?! Everyone else in the hood is $10-12. That's some serious overcharging y'all. serious. -

For the past 5 years, I've been on the prowl for the perfect Mexican restaurant in the city in terms of price and quality (I'm Asian, so sue me) -- ladies and gents, I think this is it!
Tuesday and Thursday nights: 1/2 off Margaritas. You know what that means. Yup! Sign me up!
The frozen margaritas here are the best I've ever had in my life. So darn delicious. I'm not usually a drinker, but I can definitely get my groove on here. These margaritas not only soothe over the stress of your day at the office but save you money on therapy. Yes -- these margaritas are medicinal in every sense.
The Mayan Chimichanga was perfectly crisp -- not too thick of a tortilla, but actually on the thin, crispy side -- perfection. It tasted fantastic. The guacamole rivals my own (I'm sad to admit this). Just the right amount of cilantro. I only wished it were a larger portion, but hey -- I'm a piggy, so I can't knock them for that.
Will be returning for "therapy" for sure -- especially on Tuesdays and Thursdays! -

For someone who doesn't actually like Mexican food much, I safely deduced that I would never have a Mexican restaurant that will be on my list of "places to go back to" or "places I crave randomly" but believe it or not, I was proven wrong!
I really enjoyed the vegetarian refried beans (no lard) and Mexican rice (with no chicken broth). We started with the nachos and it was carefully prepared so any chip you pick up, had the perfect combination of all toppings and you didn't have to make your own chip each bite.
The nachos alone was enough food for two but I had also already ordered a burrito, which I took home and ate a little bit later - it was humungous but I can still devour the taste of it - definitely a good sign if it left such an impression on my tongue and my mind! -

YES, MARGARITAS! So deliciously strong. They never disappoint, and honestly by the time you leave here you wouldn't remember anyway. The food is good, there's tons of seating in the back, and the service is quick. It's everything you want in a Mexican restaurant. Good Margs, Good Chips, Good Salsa. No fuss.

As someone who goes out for margaritas EVERY Friday, I found this place to be a very pleasant surprise. I have no interest in going to "high end" Mexican places for my Friday night Mexican fiesta, so I always end up at El Nuevo Mexicano (Probably my very favorite), Fernando's, Las Palmas, El Cid, or Blue Agave (if I happen to be in the Viagra Triangle) or some place similar. Las Palmas is a little different, I guess....anyway.
My "premium" margarita at Mayan Palace was REALLY good. I hate when margaritas taste like Cuervo mix...and Mayan Palace's couldn't be further from that. Granted $12.00 is pretty expensive, but with the 1800 tequila, Mayan Palace hit it out of the park. YUM!
Now, let's get to the food. Very good salsa but it comes in a small cup, so it's difficult to get your chip in there (that's what she said). Other than that it was very tasty and they always refilled it when we ran low. The guac was also very good. Fresh tasting (it better be!). Our server was very good. He immediately asked us if he could make any recommendations and asked us what sorts of things we liked. He then proceeded to walk us through 4 or 5 menu items each that we might like. I thought that was great...and he really nailed it. The food was really good. It's "normal Mexican", so nothing unbelievably fancy. Burritos, enchiladas, and all the normal things.....plus a few different items. I had a steak that was called Diablo Carne Asada (I think). It was very tasty. Almost like short ribs in a very spicy mole-like sauce.
My only beef with the Mayan Palace is that it feels kind of cold in there. Not the temperature, but the decor. Even though the lights are dim and the walls are rustically painted, it still seems a bit cold. That may keep me from going there in the winter time and also knocks off a star for me. It just doesn't feel especially cozy. Other than that....great.
Great service and tasty food! -

The Mayan Palace is your middle of the road Mexican joint. Nothing fancy, but good Mexican food. The place is set up really nice and decorated tastefully. The staff is really friendly and makes you feel welcome. The food is good and there is lots of it. It's not the best Mexican place in the world, but it's good for a nice casual meal.

Great margaritas-the raspberry was awesome! They seemed strong to me! Chicken was great as well as the chips and salsa. The chips were a little salty. The service is excellent. We were sat by the door which was drafty and as people left they offered to move us away from the door. At first I thought this was a very small restaurant and then I realized there is an additional dinning room off the side. Was a little more expensive than some Mexican restaurants in the area but overall was a fun time.

Yelp led me to Mayan Palace, and I am so glad!
I visited on a Thursday evening which just happens to be 50% off margaritas. I had an opportunity to try both the mango and strawberry frozen margaritas. Both were excellent!
The chips and salsa were quite good, and we polished off a basket before our food arrived. For our meal we split the Chicken Jr Burrito and the Chicken Fajitas. Both had great flavors and were cooked wonderfully.
Great margaritas, good food, and excellent service. You can't go wrong! -

Food is fine here but people really go on Tues/Thurs for the 1/2 price margaritas. They are good and they are strong considering that they're half price. Other than that, nothing really stands out about this place. 3.5 stars.

Just moved to the city and was looking for a great Mexican restaurant to get dinner at. This place got great reviews so I decided to try it out. I ordered the Fiesta Chimichanga and it was so good! I was definitely pleased. The reviews also raved about the margaritas but my boyfriend wasn't too impressed. We both agreed they were too sweet, but some people do like them sweeter. Overall, I was really glad we went there, prices were not to0 bad especially for being in the city. The place is small but cozy. Also very friendly and attentive staff. You should try it out!

Let me start by saying I am an expert when it comes to good Mexican food. This place has it all- great food, variety, friendly staff & amazing margaritas!
Mayan is the real deal. Complimentary salsa is great, good guacamole & the good is consistent. I recommend the steak quesadilla & Jamaican Flower margarita. If you want some good authentic Mexican food, you have to try this place. -

REALLY GOOD PLACE! Just came here with my partner, and are super full and content.
We both shared the Queso Fundido and he had the Taco Soup (I think it's called that).
He then had 2 tacos with certain things in them - can't recall. I had the Mayan Chimichanga.
REALLY GOOD! -

you know, you can only go by a place so long before you think to yourself: I'm hungry and I need some tacos. Well, that only really works for mexican places, but you know what I mean.
So, having stepped in and saying: I want some tacos. Mayan Palace had no problem taking care of what I wanted. I ordered up a chorizo taco and two chicken tacos. I think I may have gotten two beef tacos instead, but I wasn't complaining as they were pretty damn awesome, same with the chorizo taco. These bad boys were stuffed to the gills with meat and all the other good stuff that goes into them.
I also made sure to get a tamale. What I didn't expect was that they'd double up on it, score one for the good guys. The tamale itself was really good and it didn't last all too long in my presence.
Mayan palace wasn't exactly dirt cheap, but far from expensive either. This was really good mexican food and I'm always a big fan of that -

I'm personally shocked that I've lived here for almost 2 years and haven't written this review yet! WTF
So moving along, Mayan Palace is a concrete jungle where dreams are made of. My girlfriends and I used to love doing Thursday night dinners here with their half of margs special. I am not a huge margarita drinker but theirs are phenomenal, not too sweet and just strong enough that you barely can taste the tequila but 2 glasses and you're donzo.
As for food (yes yes liquid diners are no bueno), the chips & salsa are always delicious, and I've never heard of anyone not like their meal here, it's always a safe bet. I usually grab a quesadilla supreme, fajitas or tacos and they're pretty good.
The service here is great, waiters are ALWAYS sweet and accommodating. -
Review from Anuj S.
Meh... Unfortunately, I didn't like the food at Mayan Palace. The enchiladas were very dry. I think the corn tortilla on the enchiladas might have been dried out. The tostada was OK. The beans just lacked flavor and the shell was semi-soggy when served.
The service was fine. The waiter started out kind of grumpy, but was pretty good once we ordered. -

The best Mexican restaurant in Chicago.

Come here for their margaritas. My friend took me here right before she moved to NYC and it was her go-to place every Thursday. It felt like the intro to "Cheers" because everyone knew her, so of course service was impeccable for us.
Their portions are generous, so I'd say get an appetizer and a entree for party of 2. We had a steak salad and nachoes and it was the perfect amount of food. -

Someone told me that his friend made a list of all the mexican restaurants in Chicago, and went to all of them and ranked Mayan Palace as #1. Hence the visit.
I've had a lot of mexican food in the city, I like Perez in Pilsen a lot too but this place is really good. It could be the memories of the margaritas... I'm not sure.
The food is pretty solid, I had the huachinango (red snapper) veracruzana and had the mango margarita. The guacamole and salsa was very very solid as well.
The servers and staff were all super friendly and nice. Like, extra nice. I'm reading the reviews here now and it seems consistent with our experience. I would come back again. -

I love mexican food and Mayan Place is definitley one of my favorite mexican spots in Lincoln Park. I've been there for a birthday dinner with 15+ people as well as with smaller groups - the service is always excellent. The food is also great.
I noticed someone mentioned it looks a little dumpy from the outside, which is true, but inside it is surprisingly big and is so cute! The margaritas and chips & salsa are amazing as well - I 100% recommend it! -

When seated you are quickly brought out salsa and chips. The salsa is spicy buy hey it's a Mexican restaurant, and I like spicy. The place is small and service is rapid. My wife and I never had to ask for refills on water or chips and salsa. We ordered queso fundido for an appetizer and it was spicy and again damn good. I ordered a chorizo chimichanga; it came with rice and beans. The rice was fluffy and flavorful and the beans had a slight sweetness; both were excellent. The chimichanga was a perfect crisp topped with guacamole and sour cream; it was excellent. I'll definitely be going again.

Let me start by saying I am not a fan of drinking/ sipping/ tasting alcohol. I am still at an age where I prefer shots. Unless there is a football game or a life size Jenga game going on then of course I will drink a Blue Moon.
Mayan Palace is about 7 minute walk from my apartment. I was really craving some Mexican food and realized that there is a joint on Halsted. So my BF and I went here.
I ordered a Pina Colada from the bar while waiting for our seats, and I felt like I was at the beach at the Domincan. BUT I did not get a margarita even though they were only $4. I had the steak fajitas and they were sooo good. I finished it all by myself and craved more.
2nd time... I had a margarita. and OMG!!! It was like drinking juice. And after I finished it and went to use the ladies room.... I definitely got a real good buzz. They are not cheap with their Tequila and it showed in my walk home.
I have since been there a good dozen times and I love everything there.
Try: Spinach & Mushroom Quesdillas, Guacomole, Vallarta Chimichanga, & the steak fajitas. The Vallarta Chimichangas are def my favorites! -

From the outside looking in, Mayan Palace seems to be the right kind of place. Big freggin Margaritas (half price on Thursdays) and a fun a boisterous atmosphere...
However, just like the girl with orange complexion in the middle of a Chicago winter... something just ain't right about Mayan palace...
All the chicken dishes I had tasted slightly fishy. And when I say fishy, I don't mean questionable, but rather a raw fish aftertaste... I usually polish off everything on my plate, but I left some of the chicken enchiladas untouched. The chicken flautas were better (because the fried shell helped hide the taste of the meat) but I could taste that something was wrong.
The service took a while, but I was with a group and sometimes it's hard to service everyone. None the less, I had come from the gym (as most of my reviews go) and I was absolutely starving. Two full baskets of chips and salsa later, plus appetizers and I was already full when the entrees finally came.
The chicken fajitas were just okay. They seemed healthy, were fairly bland, but not memorable. I sampled a bit of the Chile Verde, a green salsa pork dish that I believe put my stomach into an uneasy feeling. Not a fan of that dish, but then again I don't like pork all that much.
The only real memorable part of the dinner was getting desert which was fried ice cream. Frying + any desert = Good and unhealthy. This was my first experience eating fried ice cream, and I was pleasantly surprised.
All in all, my group and I had a great time hanging out with each other despite the poor food experience. I most likely will not go back to Mayan Palace, unless I am in desperate need of a huge margarita on a random Thursday night. I do appreciate that the staff was nice, and that there was a good atmosphere, but that was not quite enough to make up for their deficiencies -

I cannot believe that I have never reviewed this place yet! I will try to keep it short and sweet...
This is my go-to Mexican Restaurant. I have had a variety of dishes here, and each has been great. The margaritas are so delicious, and they are half-price on Tuesday and Thursday! Also, the servers and busboys are super nice and friendly.
If you are looking to get good service, a margarita and some awesome enchiladas, check Mayan Palcae out. You won't be sorry! -
Review from Amanda C.
I had a fine time here for dinner last weekend. There was no wait at 7 on a Saturday so that was a nice surprise. This was my first time here and it didn't really have the wow! factor for me, but was a fine place to eat fairly good Mexican food.
We ordered margaritas which were very strong and not too sugary. For an appetizer we got the jalepeno poppers, which were crispy and just the right spiciness. I ordered the chicken enchiladas with green sauce which was a little too hot for my liking; luckily I had ordered mole sauce on the side. My friend said his quesadilla was really good.
Diverse group of people and adequate service. I'd come back for the location and margaritas. -

While guitar shopping or shopping of any kind I get hungry. So meandering through Halsted I totally walked past this place. The outside is dark, unassuming, except for the Mayan pyramid embroidered sign. However 2 things that caught my eye to turn around and walk in is 1) the smell of my childhood, the smell of Mexican food permeating through the door and onto the street was a catalyst and 2) there was a little boy sitting with his parents by the window. The place must be good if parents are willing to bring their children inside to eat at this establishment. Not to mention it he was totally adorable and frigidly cold outside.
The inside is dimly lit and the dining area is small but quaint. There is a flat screen, to the salvation of my boytoy, so one was able to watch the playoffs. Plus, my favorite thing to see at 2 in the afternoon, the soft glow in the background of a full bar! The server is Mexican so he has a slight but distinct accent. Regardless, he was very Nice and answered all my questions.. Which is quite the opposite to what I am used to, the men in Mexican restaurant s are always hitting on me and mumbling vulgar comments under their breath.
Complimentary chips and salsa were placed on the table.. They were really crunchy but not hard and perfectly seasoned. Some chips are either greasy and too salty or too hard and under seasoned. I ordered the Enchiladas Suizas or Swedish Enchiladas with steak as well as rice and beans, for my boytoy I ordered the Mayan Enchiladas which were filled with chorizo and potatoes along with rice and beans.
1)Enchiladas Suizas- Three enchiladas smothered with mole and cheese and stuffed with steak, were just absolutely divine! The Mole was delicious and a bit spicy, I don't like Mole because it comes out a bit bitter but this was yummy. The steak was flavorful and seasoned just right.
2) Mayan Enchiladas- My boytoy is a typical picky American white boy who won't eat anything. Well he ate it... it was like that cereal commercial "Hey Gaby He like it!!"
Rice and Beans- Being Mexican criticism of other Mexican food is genetic, nobody's is as good as ones own or your grandmothers. I must admit this rice was fluffy and delicious. The beans were comparable to my mothers, it was covered with melted cheese and the beans were not bland. It did take me back to East LA when my mom cooked (she has given that up sine she divorced my dad) and she would make me refried bean tacos or burritos.
I almost missed this spot but I am glad I went back. -

Heaven, I see you have found a home on Earth, and it's Mayan Palace Mexican Cuisine. I also see that you, Heaven, have reincarnated yourself as a plate of Nachos, half of a plate of Fajitas, and a House Margarita on the rocks with a salted rim.
The trumpeting of angels filled the small and dimly lit room as I ingested Nachos which were no doubt a combination of chiuhuahua cheese, instant nacho cheese, and some sort of nectar not typically fed to humans because of it's side-effect of pure euphoria...
...Or maybe that was the House Margarita.
It's hard to tell as I was distracted by the visions of Santa Margarita replenishing my glass and San Pascual scooping up lost pieces of steak and placing them in my tortilla. I'm fairly certain that Santa Elizabeth hand fed me this Dinner as children playfully wandered about the Restaurant and dozens of women secretly observed while lounging in hammocks as they quietly glowed and basked in the titillating wasps of the heavenly aromas escaping the kitchen.
It was all a blur of bliss until I noticed that the fajitas don't actually come with cheese ... so I just made believe that they did.
Really, anything is possible if you can dream it to be true. -

Hands down my favorite Mexican in the whole city. I eat there a lot now, so they all remember me and are very friendly. Even after the first few times they made a point to say hello and ask how I was. Which scores them big points in my book. The interior seems small and crowded up front, which I don't mind. But if you're looking for something more spacious ask to be seated in the rear dining room. It's large and they have a beer garden. Food is excellent and portioned well. Drinks are a little pricey but definitely worth it. Their Margaritas have real chunks of fruit in them. This place deserves the 5 stars I gave them.

If you want something a little nicer than your typical taco joint, but don't want to give up quality, this is your place! We shared some chips and guacamole and the veggie enchiladas. Both were really quite good Their house salsa is really great as well. It has a very nice spice to it!
My favorite part are the wonderful margaritas! This is by far my favorite drink and I'm always on the lookout for the best in the city. Mayan Palace's are definitely at the top of my list right now! They're half-off on Tuesdays, so stop in! :o)
