Having just recently moved to Oak Park, my husband and I are on a mission to try as many local restaurants as possible.  This is proving difficult, however, since we can't stop going to Maya!

First and foremost, the nachos appetizer is AMAZING!  My favorite nachos ever.  The beef is braised in honey and cider vinegar and is simply wonderful.  We've also tried the Sopes de Tinga app...it was pretty good, but definitely takes a backseat to the nachos.

Entrees....we've tried several things on the menu and all but one has been great.  The Salmon a la Parilla dish is wonderful.  I wouldn't normally order salmon at a Mexican restaurant, but the waiter heard me talking about it and said it was great...and he was right!  It is grilled with a poblano-asparagus cream sauce...delicious!  The Kobe beef burger (again, not something usually ordered at a Mexican place) is wonderful, as is the Filet Mignon.  The Chuleta de Cerdo is the hubby's favorite - a pork chop with a blueberry-habanero compote and chipotle-butternut squash puree.  The one disappointing thing is a new menu addition - some sort of enchilada dish.  Not bad, just very bland.

Maya also has a great drink list.  Margaritas are great and the bartenders seem to really know what they're doing.  The service is wonderful.  From the minute you walk in the door, everyone is friendly, helpful, and professional.  Last time we went our server was named Katie and she was spectacular.  We will definitely request her next time.

More like 3.5, but because I left wanting more, I'll have to go back and see if they can wow me another time.

The drinks we had were good, the Margarina and the Pisco Sour.  The chips they provided "gratis" were a little stale, but the homemade salsas were above par.

We started with the butternut squash tamale, and were pleasantly surprised, kind of like a racehorse storming out of the gate.  It had a lot of flavor both in the tamale and in the rich brown sauce it was topped with.

Unfortunately there was a very noticeable lag between our single first course and the next course of a soup and a salad.  I'd say it took fifteen minutes from the time our tamale plate was cleared before the next course was delivered personally by the waiter.  It doesn't take fifteen minutes to put together a salad and a soup, so obviously someone forgot to fire the items.  It wasn't a big deal, but we were there very early when there was barely anyone around.

The tortilla soup was very good, as was the portabella salad.  The portabella was smoky and spicy, and it complimented nicely the bitter arugula, the cheese and the vinaigrette.  Often a portabella isn't matched very properly with the salad it is supposed to be the centerpiece of.

Finally for our entrees we tried the stuffed squash and the mahi-mahi special.  The squash was very nicely presented, but the flavor was a bit lacking.  We were a little disappointed because the first two courses' dishes were seasoned very well.  The squash seemed to rely too heavily on the natural flavors and cream.  The mahi-mahi was cooked perfectly, but again, there was a little disappointment, although this time it was because too much was done.  The fish was served over a black bean tamale and drenched in a red sauce with onions.  When you have a great tasting fish like mahi-mahi, it seems bizarre to drench it in so much sauce.  Every time I tried to eat a bite of the fish and the tamale together, all that came through was the tamale.  So while the fish was great when I brushed away the sauce and pushed out the tamale, it seemed like a failed effort overall.

They had a very nice wine selection-- I had two glasses of a dry gewurztraminer which had a latent sweetness that paired well with the mildly spicy food.  The food was above average for a Mexican joint, but the price was also higher.  Service was a bit spotty.  I'd still recommend to anyone in the Oak Park area with a padded wallet and a craving for something a little more upscale in Latin cuisine.

When it comes to "south of the border" cuisine in Oak Park, I've been going to the same place since I was an embryo. No joke. So when my mom suggested Maya del Sol for her 65th birthday I did a spit-take. What Ruthie wants, Ruthie gets and I just kept my fingers crossed she wouldn't be disappointed. She's spicy.

And we weren't. Good lord in heaven, MDS is hot shit from top to bottom. Rollicking in chipotle madness of their exceptional sopes and swirling in a big bowl of avocado sour cream. Margaritas made table side, wait staff bending over backwards. . . our eyes were bugging.

This place would be perfect if you just stopped at a marg and aps (get the sopes, and call it if you like). But we didn't and sampled the fish tacos, crisp, light and flavorful; the ropa vieja, oh that corn cake, creamy and bold, just bitchin'; and straight up enchiladas because when in Juarez. . .

Of course, with any birthday, everyone wants a drum beat even though mom is modest. Aldo not only brought out a deep, dark, divine chocolate cake with a candle, but took our photo, printed it and put it in a souvenir MDS folder.

OK, so it's a little Disney, but it's the difference between four and five stars for me. And at $100 for three people (a couple margs a piece for some of us *points at husband*), booyah.

p.s. You'll notice the whopping MDS limo parked in front of the restaurant. Turns out, if you get sauced, they'll take you home. Love.

Went here last night for a fitness DVD release party. It was very quiet on a Monday night, and slowly started to fill up with the "Hit It" DVD fans that showed up to support the event. While I waited for things to get started, my boyfriend and I ordered entrees. He ordered the Chipotle Marinated Carne Asada and I ordered the Salmon a la Parilla. We both really enjoyed our meals! There were also some appetizers passed around that were part of the event -ceviche, tinga (shredded flavored chicken) on corn cakes...everything served was so good! It seems this is a great place to hold a private event -especially on quiet weeknights. There was plenty of space to accommodate the event and still a private room for any "normal" walk in customers. Also, parking on Oak Park Ave. was a breeze. Metered parking -free after 6pm. I really, really like the food and service here. I'm happy I returned for a second (or maybe it's my third?) visit! Definitely a top notch place!

I went here for the first time on Friday night and was blown away.  The food was incredible, the service was top notch, and the live music by Guitarra Azul was absolutely amazing.  I can't say enough about the Sangria - it was delicious!  The same with the Arepa de Ropa Vieja.  I've never had a dish like that before and boy was it packed with flavor!  The nachos were great too.  They had a unique taste that made it hard to stop eating them!

I will definitely return to try some of their other dishes and I can't wait!  If they impressed me this much with their appetizers and main courses, I can't imagine what their desserts will taste like!

This place has great food with a lot of interesting flavors, sauces and ingredients. There is no boring meal here. I like being able to get an a typical dish like enchiladas with a twist. The drinks are great, and they have a nice bar to wait at, or to hang out if you're just looking to go out for drinks.

I came here for an early dinner with a large group, (aka my family), to celebrate all the September birthdays. One sister has raved on and on about how she loves this place and so I was looking forward in trying it.

Coming from the city, I have to appreciate seeing meter not needing to be fed on a Sunday... oh the memories.... and walking in I can also appreciate the space. You have really two halves, one more for the sports crew, the younger set, the have a few drinks and munchies kinda of crowd. The other, the sit down and enjoy a meal. Mmmm yes, let's talk about the meal. I was sad to hear the family didn't want to throw down for some appetizers, (really? Am I related to you all? I have 12 stomachs to fill you know...), I was looking forward to trying the sopes de tinga or one of the civiches, perhaps even the nachos... sigh... alas no one wanted anything. Luckily the soup of the day was tortilla, which I prefer mucho gusto style. Good flavor, a little smokiness, nice caramelized onions, but there was a slight heartiness that I usually find that I didn't here. Maybe even a slight scant few pieces of avocado would work well. Then I had to get my usual standby and favorite, the cochinita pibil. Slow roasted pork, pulled apart with black beans, pickled onions served with tortillas and here not only my favorite and searingly hot habanero sauce but also a serrano lime sauce as well. Oh, it was really good. The pork was flavorful and rich, the beans were good, the tortillas were fresh and certainly were addicting. I will say the habanero sauce was freaking hot, (which I love, if I'm not sweating, it ain't hot), it had a slight acidic twang to it that caught me off guard. I am not sure I love it, but it wasn't bad by any means. Just interesting. I usually prefer a slightly smokey version, but here, well, I was dealing with a runny nose in no time flat. When it came down to dessert, the staff brought out a dessert for each of the birthday girls, I am sorry... birthday ladies... and we all shared. The flan was great, the chocolate mousse was fantastic, the tira mi su... was okay. Hey two out of three is still a winner winner delicious dinner to me.

And yes, it was a delicious dinner. The margaritas that everyone was having were great and quite addicting, I can see how so many of them disappeared, (I stuck with a white wine), and I will say strong margaritas none the less. The staff was super friendly and always had an opinion of the food and dishes on what they liked and preferred. Its a good thing. I like to know that my guy is loving what I am getting or at least can tell me something about it with feeling. The owner, (or who I assume is the owner), stopped by to check on us, wish happy birthday to the special guests and make sure we were happy. As we started to pack up, the place was hopping, not bad for a 6pm on a Sunday night! I would be curious to see what a Friday night at 7:30pm might be like, thankfully you can score yourself a reservation and scan the scene yourself.

With prices being more than fair, I have to say I was quite happy from top to bottom, sad to know its out in the burbs where I'm usually not around, but glad I went and had a great time.

I am impressed. I lived in Lincoln Park, Gold Coast and Streeterville for 20 years before moving to Oak Park about 3 years ago. This latin fusion restaurant rivals many of the best quality fusion restaurants throughout Chicago. Food, service and ambiance are excellent. Drinks are great. Weather permitting, the patio is awesome.
The waitstaff was equally accommodating with and without our kids.
Highly recommended!

All I need to say is Claudio's Margaritas.

Claudio is the bar tender in the beautiful back yard area.  I went here with friends for dinner, We sat at the bar and I told him I wanted a margarita.  He asked me how do I like them sweet, or sour. I was open for whatever and told him to make me whatever he wanted.  He changed my margarita life!!  This man is magic!  I feel bad ordering margaritas at other places now because they can't stand up!

The food is good but pricey.  I'm admittely not very adventurous when it comes to mexican food so I usually just grab the chicken tacos.  Their's is really good.  And they made my rice into an interesting pyramid shape, which was pretty cool.  There aren't a whole lot of options on the menu.  Which is fine for me but if you want some variety you may be disappointed.  The server was awesome.  All smiles and insanely helpful.

All and all I love this place and think it's a great spot to meet friends and hang out.  It's huge and spacious outside and inside.  I'd say check it out!

I've probably been here 4 or 5 times now.  The food is wonderful and the service has been very good too.  The Arepa de Ropa Vieja is a must try followed by the Chocolate Mousse Cake.  And if you're thirsty, try the Sangria.  It's a much better choice than the Mojito.

I came here once just for drinks and desserts with my girlfriends.  We had a great experience after my friend ordered a Frangelico.  The Manager came over to explain that they didn't have any frangelico, but instead he gave us all complementary samples of a delicious rum (I think) that had a similar smooth sweetness to it.  How thoughtful!

I've also had a few early dinners here with my young kids.  And even though the place has a trendy feel to it, the staff was super accommodating to our kids.  I can't tell you how many times the server replaced silverware that my son dropped on the floor or brought us extra napkins - all with a genuine smile.

Next on my list is to try out their patio!

Eat your heart out, Adobo Grill! You wish your food and drinks were this good. Well, I won't miss Adobo any more. Maya del Sol has great cocktails, a varied and interesting menu and the food has just the right amount of spicy kick. A lovely night out, despite the fact that we had a reservation and didn't get seated for 30 minutes.

Cinco de WA HOOOOO!!!

We arrived at 5:30PM on a gorgeous Cinco de Mayo evening and were told it would be a 30 minute wait for the patio.  I inquired about the bar at the patio, and we were seated 2 minutes later.

Cinco de Mayo specials had been running since May 1st.  5 days of specials for CINCO de Mayo at $5.  $5 Margaritas, $5 Sangria, and $5 Appetizers.

However... we both wanted mojitos.  Which.. were excellent.  Lots of minty goodness and just the right amount of lime.  After two mojitos each we decided to order the appetizer sampler.  YUM.  Sopes de Tinga, Piña Colada Ceviche and Ensenada Taquitos.  It was divine.

And... do you want to know the BEST thing about this place???
They have blankets.  Yes, blankets on the patio.  For those chilly evenings when it's too nice to sit inside, but you have left your sweater at home.  Warm, fuzzy blankets.  I simply cannot get over this.  WOW.
(I was assured by the bartender that they get washed regularly.)

The patio at Maya is an oasis that I will frequent during the warmer months.  No other patio in Oak Park even comes close to comparing to this one!  Lush gardens, a fire pit in the middle, creeping trellises, and festive lighting.  I didn't want to leave.

I had the pollo de la mancha. It was chicken with potatoes in mole sauce. The potatoes were raw and the mole sauce was a little watery. My wife had a skirt steak that was rubbery. I had high hopes for this place. $80.00 smackers down the drain, oh, the Modelo was good.

Fantastico!!

What can I say, I was impressed. The seafood dishes at Maya del Sol are amazing!! I've had both the salmon and halibut (was the seafood special of the day), and amazing they were! A succulent, melts in your mouth kind of amazing. All the spices in the dish were well thought out and while the flavors were different from what I'm used to, they made perfect sense together.

I will admit, service was a little slow at times. But by no means were we in any hurry. We were in search of a relaxing evening and that's just what we got. Our server appeared to be busy, but she gave us a great deal of attention and put a lot of effort into making sure that we were getting what we wanted out of the dining experience. We felt pretty important, even on the busiest of nights :)

It's Latin food with a contemporary twist. And it totally worked.

The place lacks a culinary identity.  While creative with its limited menu, the dishes turn out either bland and watery or extremely  flavored.  Take the pulled pork (Cochinita Pibil), for example.  The pork comes drenched in a bland watery tomato-ish sauce, accompanied by two sauces that are overpowering in acidity (and definitely not as spicy as you'd expect).

The ceviche trio is ok but nothing special.

The Calabaza Rellena (half acorn squash) filled with overcooked rice swimming in a sea of butter, is definitely an unfortunate concept.  Vegetarian, on one hand, full of saturated fat on the other.  Any rice or mushroom fragrance is overpowered by the copious amount of melted butter.

The service is friendly and prompt.  The obligatory tortilla chips come with the same salsas you find across the street at Fuego Loco, making you wonder if both restaurants use the same supplier.  In fact the whole place gives you an impression of an upscale version of Fuego Loco.

The dinning room has a relaxed, warm design but it can be very noisy due to lack of sound absorbing material.  The little tables (mini-booths) for two along the wall can be quite uncomfortable if both diners are over 5 feet high.

All in all a middle-of-the-road effort, typical of most Oak Park restaurants (of which I am a resident, nonetheless).

Maya de Sol is not your average Mexican spot. So close to the El, city dwellers need to come on in to Oak Park and try it...you'll probably enjoy the flavors more than de cero on Randolph.

This is another delightful weekend brunch spot too. Try the chilaquiles (with skirt steak if you're a carnivore) and a bloody mary with all the fixins. Hangover, goodbye!

I've eaten here twice, once for dinner and then another time for brunch.  The service here is friendly and the host is incredibly welcoming.  The back patio is really nice, and they have a fire going in the middle to help dampen the chill on the not-quite-warm enough spring days. I'm mixed on the food though...I'd give it 3.5 stars.

4 stars for dinner.  It's been over a year, so I have no clue what I ate, but I remember being blown away by both the appetizers and the main course.

3 stars for brunch.  The food was ok, but really bland, and I was mildly disappointed. I was expecting a lot more excitement from an egg dish with beans, totstadas and fried plantains (Huevos Tostadas).  My boyfriend had the Huevos con Chorizo and was also hoping for more flavor.  (I must mention that the Bellinis (sparkling wine with fruit juice, are absolutely fantastic.)

We went back for breakfast and were truly impressed; much better than dinner! The mango-blueberry french toast was so perfect and sweet from the fruit and its juicees that I didnt even need syrup. It came with a wonderfully fresh pear ice cream. The huevos con chorizo with a side of black bean was also fantastic. I also ordered a bloddy mary. This was the only part of breakfast I was a little disappointed in. The presentation was pretty cool with a huge skewer of cheese, olives, shrimp, citrus fruit and ham coming out the top but the taste of the drink was missing something - I cant quite put my finger on it. For $10 it wasnt all that worth it.

I am super exicted to go back and try the rest of the breakfast menu.

I don't think I can add to anything to what has already been written here about the food which is very good.  I particularly enjoyed the nachos and the dessert with corn ice cream.  I am not a fan of tequila, partly because of an incident in my early 20's involving my friends propping me in my doorway, ringing the bell and scampering off only to have me fall in on my father and waking up in a pool of my own sick. I digress.  I thoroughly enjoyed the "Horchatini" and a few of the other concoctions dreamed up by the crack bar staff.  Finally, what really puts Maya over the top is the fantastic open area in the back of restaurant, which, apart for the views of the 60's era apartment building, they have done wonders with making it the best outdoor space in Oak Park.

I have walked past this place a number of times on my way to and from church. We decided to eat here for Easter brunch and it was a good choice. We were greeted and seated without reservations. I never have high expectations for Easter or Mother's Day brunches, but this one put a spin on traditional. The carne asada was awesome and so were the chicken taco corquettes.

The waiter was friendly and the bar poured a strong margaretta. I will have to come back and order off the regular menu. People watching was honestly typical Oak Park; hippies, yuppies, and homos. The atomosphere is very warm and inviting though.

This is not your typical mexican place. I would call them a fusion. I had the Ceviches Piña Colada which is a sushi grade Ahi Tuna and calamari cured in pineapple juice and tossed with grilled Pineapple, cilantro and red onions in a savory coconut milk. OMG delicious. The resturant table were nice spear out and the watiress was so lovely. Later on a band started playing in the background which gave it a larger appeal. When we were leavin gand exiting through the bar they had belly dancers up there for mardi gras (sorry this entry is late) and the bar was hoping :)

I had a wonderful evening at Maya del Sol. The atmosphere was great. The food was great. The staff was great. The outdoor patio was very relaxing and if your someone who is always cold like I am, they offer you a blanket. This was my first time going and I would definetly return. I had the Nacho del Sol for an appetizer and they were delicious. And if you are a chocalate lover like I am the Chocolate Mousse cake is to die for. If you are in the Oak Park area and looking for a great place to eat, stop at Maya Del Sol.

I still love the waiter, we had the same one. He's good. Low key personality and it seems like he really wants you to enjoy yourself.

But after another trip I could not help but feel I pay a little too much for my food. I wasn't all that hungry so I ordered an Empenada appetizer, Lili ordered a Salmon cake appetizer, the others all ordered tacos. Taco folks were happy. When the server placed the one salmon cake in front of Lili she said, "that's it? That's it?"
I always thought appetizers were plates to be shared. There was not much to share here. Every time the server asked if there was anything else we needed Lili would say, "yes. My other salmon cake."
My empenadas looked more like tiny burritos, or large taquitos, whichever. They were ok.
I'm going to stick to using this as a Friday night bar hangout, not a dinner spot.

I simply cannot get tired of this place.  Looking for an upscale yet laid back enough place for a relaxing evening.  This is it.  The food is upscale latin.  The menu is rather simple and limited in choices but the food is simply great, well prepared, well presented and with interesting and unusual flavors that you won't find anywhere else locally.  Service is attentionate and perfect.  Drinks are just the right strength.  To top it off, the patio for a cool summer evening is a nice plus.  Give it a try, you won't regret it. Plus, they do take open table reservations.

I would highly recommend trying out the back patio.   This little oasis has a lot of ambiance and a gas fire pit.   My wife ordered the carne asada and it was very tasty!   My favorite is the Nacho del sol.   This is not your typical nachos.   It has a marinated beef (or pork?) that has a sweet taste and a small amount of peppers.   But unlike other nachos it is not swimming in cheese sauce, it has melted shredded cheese but it does not overwhelm the dish.

A bit of style over substance...

The place looks and feels like it's trying to be an upscale Mexican place, but if you really want that, go downtown and visit one of Rick Bayless's joints. He knows how to do upscale Mexican.

Setting aside the atmosphere at Maya, I did like the Prickly Pear margarita... tasty. But unlike one of the other reviewers, my carne asada was acceptable, but not particularly inspired. At a lower price it might have actually been good, but considering the pricing here, I expected a lot more.

I suppose if you're out with friends, it's not a bad place to be "trendy" in Oak Park, but really, with so many really top-notch Mexican places in the city serving better, more authentic fare at better prices, or with award winning more cutting edge Mexican a short drive away, I'd probably skip on Maya.

Meh, I want to go back for dinner.  We went here for Easter brunch after mass at St. Edmunds.  It was OK.  About what you would expect from a Mexican buffet. But what I could not get over was the price!  $19.95 for the buffet, which included nothing spectacular and the selections were limited.  I will probably not go back for brunch.  Apparently there is a pancake diner across the street which I did not know about.  I would like to give it a shot for dinner; the back patio looks kind of intriguing.  It just needs a pool and swim up bar!

Lisa B.: You may brag about your First to Review, but I'm the one to give Maya its first five star. Double-sue me!

There's something about this place that's just...right. The sight, sound and smell - from start to finish - all seem to marry perfectly. Well, a polygamous marriage that is. Okay whatever - sue me again.

Four of us went there last Friday night. It was packed, tho' we were seated immediately in the back room past the bar. There's an outdoor dining area but we were told it won't open until later (June-ish?) when there'll be an outdoor bar. Two bars?! I'd say, bring it on. Hey, liquor license is hard to get anyway.

Our waiter, Neil, was fun, courteous and attentive. I like how he served their signature Cakuhla margarita: with a shaker, into martini glasses. He recommended a few of his favorite dishes - that, or the chef especially needed those meatstuffs to be turned over. That's just my theory.

Nevertheless. The dishes, turns out, were fantastically yummerlicious. Latin fusion best describes its menu, which includes dishes invented by the chef on-duty, Armando. He later sat down and chatted with us which is pretty cool.

Personal favorites:

+Ceviche. Get the "trio": pina colada w/tuna, salmon, and traditional.
+Calavaza Rellena. This dish single-handedly redefines the expression, "holy moly." Risotto with yucca and coconut juice served on top of acorn squash.
+Cochinita Pibil. Pulled roasted pork. The habanero and serrano dipping sauces will set you on fire and make you dance like a monkey.
+Coconut mousse brownie. Perfection made better.

Two bands played that night - one band actually opened for the other. How cool is that? Even more cool was that two of my friends got up and danced salsa to the music. I was tempted to do the "Elaine Dance" but wasn't wasted enough to do so. Bummer.

It seems like Maya is progressing toward culinary ecstacy. I mean, excellence. Kudos to this locally-owned and -employed foodies paradise.

Easter Brunch was our first experience with Maya del Sol.  We had reservations for 5 people, and still had to stand awkwardly at the front of the bar for nearly 10 minutes.  Many tables were wide open, so not sure what that was about.  Food selection and flavor was limited and neither authentic frijoles y arroz, nor thoughtful and elegant.  I paid $11.00 for a glass of champagne, because I refuse to drink sparkling wine.
My suggestion is: go here at night, tie one on and enjoy the music.  Save the latin cuisine for elsewhere.

This is a cute place for brunch in the summer, when you sit on the patio in the sun. Other than that, I'd go back for cocktails and appetizers. The food isn't anything special.

If I want great latin food in Oak Park, I stick with the fantastic Mexican cuisine at New Rebozo.

Maya del Sol has the best outdoor patio in Oak Park.  Every time I sit back there, I feel like I'm on vacation.  Their fun, unique drinks, the bright colors, the fire pit, and the community blankets make it a great experience every time.  I have only been there 4 times, and I feel like the menu is hit or miss.  I LOVED the ceviche, but wasn't so impressed with the enchiladas or the Huevos Tostadas.  They weren't bad, but they were a little bland.  The atmosphere completely makes up for it though.  Bring someone here to impress them.
