Max still has, for my money,  the best pastrami sandwich in the entire region (the #7 on his menu)...its $6.99 and is guaranteed to stuff you for an entire day.

Recently I used a two-for-one coupon at one of the other sandwich shops in Auburn (rhymes with Sister Tickle)......the amount of meat in TWO of the competition's sandwiches was the same as the amount of meat in ONE of Max's pastrami sandwiches.

here are my only complaints about the MAX---

NOT OPEN ON SATURDAYS & SUNDAYS:
It would be nice to cruise on in on a Saturday or Sunday for brunch, then fulfill the Honey Do list of purchases at the newly opened Home Depot, which is only a few hundred feet from Max's door.

SAME OLD BORING MENU & SANDWICHES:
--- I keep waiting for that hot beef sandwich (similar to the hot pastrami, but with roast beef instead), named after me! (LOL)

I took my family here after our hike at Hidden Valley Recreation area. It is actually very close to the trails and provided just the kind of meal we were craving after a very hot walk.

The only reason why I knew about this place is from the reviews I found on here. I don't know how anyone would even know to come here except by word of mouth. What a strange location, it's tucked (more like hidden) in a nondescript office/strip mall. Next to the Placer County Office of Alcohol Rehabilitation no less. So minus a star for such a wacky spot.

But the sandwiches where excellent and I think well priced. Now that I think about it, I'd rather pay 6.50 for a great meal in an odd location. I got the George Costanza, a very good turkey sandwich, my hubby got the Ruben and our toddler ate a little of both. I still had some to take home. The bread is so good! All we wanted was water but I noticed that they offer a full selection of beverages (minus alcohol) and the atmosphere was really nice, it included bar type seating, a hidden table for 2, some larger tables and some seating outside.  We went at about 1:30 on a weekday and there wasn't a crowd.

This is the best deli I've eaten at since leaving Philadelphia in 1999.  I love it!!!  They only need to add a Phila cheese steak to the menu and I won't miss PA as much.

Max's definitely stands out amongst the Gold Country vibe that is usually associated with the foothills. They seem to be influenced by cafes & delis in S.F. or L.A., which is a breath of fresh air. Lunch crowds seem heavy, but the freshness of the food seems to be why. Saw photos of the owner with some celebs squeezed in amongst the euro ad art, nice modern decor. Seems they've been chosen "BEST DELI" a number of times, and I can definitely see why. They're not open on weekends which was a bummer, but rumors abound as to a second location in downtown Auburn or the Roseville area. Other stuff at Max's, espresso bar and ice creams, Green tea ice cream was a hit. The #6(Turkey,avocado & Swiss) on grilled focaccia Rocked! Maybe the best sandwich I've had outside of the Bay Area. Check 'em out!

Max's Deli is OK, but a bit full of itself. Trying to cater to big city transplants, they tend to ignore the locals, which make up the bulk of their business. One of Max's veggie sandwiches I ate recently was sadly lacking in substance. They are also NOT the only sandwich shop in town. For great locally made sandwiches, you could also try longtime favorite A-Town Deli in downtown Auburn. I'm not bashing Max's. Their food is good, but the location is poor and service is less than stellar. If the Soup Nazi on "Seinfeld" is your idea of fun, then you'll fit right in at Max's Deli. In my opinion, Max's is great for to-go orders. I do like their turkey sandwich.

I just think it's so funny that they have a sandwich named after George Costanza, of Seinfeld fame, here. I tried it and it was really good. The girls here are always so nice to me. I hope Max's Deli opens another Deli on the other side of town so I don't have to drive so far away for a good sandwich.

I love Max's and eat there every week.  The food is great and the service is usually quite quick, unless you hit the lunch rush.  If I could change one thing it would be the occasional "drama" behind the counter, but other than that, I'm happy.

You know when you have that gnawing feeling that you need to zap your taste buds because everything is tasting flat?  That's definitely when you need to head to Max's Deli where the zest is, whether it be the wide variety of savory soups, a creamy tuna salad/sandwich or that  yummy egg salad, Max brings satisfaction; and if Max is not running, you'll have fun connecting with a genuine colorful character with a generous nature.  Careful of those wicked chocolate and toffee cookies or just plain treat yourself.  You, go Max.

Amazing sandwiches.  Every time I go there I have a quick made to order grilled sandwich.  So delicious.  I do the panini style turkey-melt without the cheese-  I just tell Max,  the Sandwich Master  to hold the cheese. It is the best low calorie sandwich I have ever had.  He uses great turkey, fresh sourdough bread, a  secret spicy mustard and the magic griller.  That sandwich, or any of the specials, and a huge diet coke is what I call the perfect power meal.   THE BEST SANDWICH PLACE IN TOWN.  Actually, the ONLY great sandwich place in town.  Try it.  Good salads too.  If you want to watch those calories - they hve some excellent choices there.  LOVE LOVE LOVE

I used to work at Max's and it was probably the best two summers of my life.  Nearly every day was a joy at work because I felt like I was part of a community.  Learning the customers names was imperative to me, as many people would visit us daily for lunch.  I knew it was as important to them as it was to me for them to be welcomed and recognized as they came into Max's.  And I was lucky enough to work with an amazing team.  Max's crew is made of the best, most friendly and skilled sandwich creators in California!  I am proud to have been a part of it, and know that even though I am no longer putting together sandwiches for Max's customers, great meals and happy people are still coming out of Max's Deli and Catering Company every single day! :-) Keep on keepin on Max- you have created a dream.  And for goodness sake, we miss the frozen yogurt!!!
