This place never ceases to amaze me. This is one of the CLEANEST nail salons I have ever been to and the service is amazing. No matter how late I arrive, with or without an appointment, they always make time for me and do a great job. They have several options for manicure and pedicure treatments, so there is no need to break the bank here if I don't have to. The employees are always smiling and friendly. They will have my business as long as I am living in Houston.

Went here with a friend for Shellac manicures. There were many problems, and in spite of a very kind owner willing to make it right, I will not chance it by going again.

First of all, they did not have Shellac brand colors but only one small selection of Gelish colors. So, they did not have a nice neutral to choose from. The owner said he does not have more because he does not think the Shellac is of as good quality - but I've been using Shellac brand for years and think they are great, so I have trouble believing this explanation. Also, if there is no nice neutral color, what are you supposed to do if you want a clear-ish tinted color for your nails (as many women do)?

The salon was empty and seemed clean, except I was sat at a station where there were old kleenexes and drink bottles. I don't understand how someone working there could not notice this.

The guy doing my nails seemed to not speak English at all, AT ALL. I asked him a couple of questions and he could not even respond, but just smiled and nodded. I told him I wanted to keep my nails long and just square them off, since I had been growing them out. He proceeded to file them down to behind the tip of my fingernails so far that they HURT.

He then proceeded to apply the shellac really fast and like he did not even care about the application at all. Anyone who knows shellac knows that if you apply too much so that it clumps between the nail and the skin then the polish can peel off quickly. He obviously did not know this because the polish was pooling on the sides of both of my fingers. In fact, the top coat was all over the place on my fingers, including on the bottoms of my finger pads (how does that even happen?!).

The final insult was when he gestured for me to pull out my hands so he could wipe off the final top coat and make them shiny. I saw already that the shellac was not dry so I said "no, it's not dry" since I had already just seen my pinky nail smudge. He then tried to physically pull my hands towards him and I pulled them back forcefully saying No! You'll ruin it, it's not dry! He grabbed my arm and almost bruised me with how much he force he tried to apply in pulling my arm and immediately started to wipe down the nails with cotton. Guess what! It wasn't dry and the shellac started smearing off.

This was totally unacceptable, and I was mad at this point so I called to the owner to come address the situation. The owner saw that I was right and then told me he would do it all over, so he then STARTED OVER and did the manicure himself, albeit now on my stubs of fingernails. One other thing that I thought was gross is that the owner proceeded to scratch off the messed up Shellac with his own fingernails - it was almost too much to bear. The guy who had originally worked on me then went over to do a French manicure on a woman who had been waiting - yikes!

You would think I'd be comp'ed for such an experience, right? Nope! Although the owner had already agreed to the price of $25 over the phone, which is a $10 discount from $35, he still made me pay that amount for my 2.5 hour manicure and destruction of my nails. Obviously, I will not be going back. It has been less than a week and my manicure has started chipping off, so he also needs to rethink his theory on the supposed superior quality of the gelish over shellac brands.

The owner seemed like a genuinely nice guy, but he has GOT to fire the guy who worked on me (with eyeliner and wears a cross necklace) and get his salon in order and his folks trained if he wants to stay open!

My search for a nail salon actually started this past weekend. Hoping to find a salon open on Sundays, I cruised up and down Eldridge as twilight fell on Saturday evening. Maxim Nails was already closed so I peered through the plate glass storefront hoping to divine some clues from the murky interior as to the type of establishment housed within. I wasn't able to tell much, but as I pressed my face against the glass I was approached by an Asian lady in a lab coat inquiring if she could help me. She explained that they were closed already(and closed on Sunday) but that if I came back Monday I could have my nails done. She told me a little about the salon, with most of her account devoted to the stringent sterilization processes they used. She also gave me a 15% off coupon.

Darkness was falling quickly so I abandoned my search for the night with the intention of resuming it the next day. However, life interfered and Monday found me despairing over the condition of my feet. My prior pedicure had been over two months before and the polish looked like half-raised red blinds. The skin on my feet appeared as arid as it felt with my cracked heels resembling nothing so much as a sun-baked salt flat. It is safe to say that the condition of my feet was deplorable.

Remembering my coupon, I arrived at Maxim near five p.m. As I approached, I thought it might have been closed as  the salon was empty and all the lights in the front  were turned off, but the door wasn't locked so I went in. I was greeted promptly and ushered to a massage chair in the back. I was relieved to see that the furnishings appeared to be clean and fairly new. Indeed, the spa chairs were of a nicer variety than most I have been in, with a padded pillow to rest one's head on and faux wood trimmings and side trays. The attendant drew hot water and added scented bath salts to the bubbling foot bath and I gratefully lowered my feet to soak. I was offered something to drink (sodas, water, etc.) and shown how to work the controls for the massage chair. As my back was percussed and kneaded, my cuticles were ministered to, the nails trimmed and shaped, and the skin exfoliated. The cleaning was followed by a moisturizing massage and I was encouraged to wear something besides jeans the next time so that the entire lower leg could be massaged. I brought my own polish (a shade I refer to as Harlot Red but is actually called The Thrill of Brazil) which was deftly applied, and soon my feet were looking less like those found on a Sasquatch and more like something I could slip into sandals without being embarrassed.

During my pedicure two other ladies arrived to have pedicures, and we all had an amiable chat about mobile phones. The friendly conversation really enhanced the entire experience. (One of them did try the wine but opined that it had been left open too long. If you're interested in having wine while you have a pedicure, you might do well to BYOB.)

All in all, it was a very pleasant experience and I would go there again. I felt that the pedicure could have been more thorough in certain areas - cuticle trimming, curetting under the nail and along the sides, exfoliating, and the price was a bit high($35)  but the end result was more than satisfactory and my feet have never been softer.

I would still like to find a salon that's open on Sundays since that usually seems to be my only free day but until I do, I'll be scheduling my Monday - Saturday free time here.
