Neighborhood: MissionWed. July 9th @ 5:30pm. What wine goes with Pringles,…
Announced 4 weeks agoTwo dinners and one brunch later, I have a five-star feeling about Maverick. Nothing screams five stars, but you know how the sum-of-the-parts thing works.
Brunch is more of a four-star affair, good to have in your back pocket if you need a more refined brunch spot in the mission . The oyster po' boy hit the freaking spot, as did the home fries. The benedict-addict would have given the andouille benedict a perfect score, but was disappointed the sausage overwhelmed everything else.
Both dinners have been spot-on. Maverick has the nouveau-Mission thing down pat. Comfort food as cuisine, casual-fancy vibe, servers who look like shined-up hipsters but are attentive and knowledgeable--the whole deal. It's my new go-to for nice-but-not-dressed-up.

This place was a last minute sunday plan and it was ok. I did enjoy what I ordered which was the fried chicken (fat fat fat I know but I didnt eat the skin!). The place was rather small but very cute and we sat on high chairs with my party of 6 right by the kitchen. Menu was small but everything looked appealing. I thought the sweetened mashed potatoes were a bit off but the chicken was good. Appetizers were good, desserts just ok. For the price, this was probably a one time thing for me.
It's been hard to wrangle a smile out of me lately - something about having to study for this pointless exam next week, but I digress. Anyway, I'm in total procrastination mode, and my mind is wandering towards meals I would be eating if I weren't studying, and Maverick is suddenly front and center in my brain waves. A smile creeps over my lips. How could I not have yelped this yet?
The doughnuts - five warm, magical doughnut holes generously dusted with cinnamon and sugar. These are both larger and denser than your average doughnut holes. You MUST share if you've ordered another brunch item, or else painfully resign yourself to waddling out the door.
Cornmeal pancakes - Two delightfully fluffy, textured pancakes, house made breakfast pork sausage (that were not floating in grease) with ginger and sage (not your typical sausage seasoning, yet still reminiscent of something comforting in that lazy Sunday morning sorta way), warm REAL Vermont maple syrup (drizzle that liquid crack over EVERYTHING)!
Chorizo and Eggs - House made chorizo (again NOT super greasy like you'd expect) with scrambled eggs, green onion and cheese grits (mm, wanted to lick my boyfriend's plate after tasting these grits). I wasn't expecting anything exciting from these eggs, but something magical happened on my tongue, and I couldn't stop myself from taking multiple bites off my bf's plate!
Yes, I will be back . . . soon I hope!
I can't wait to go back to Maverick. In a city where you have so many choices that I feel guilty going somewhere twice, I will hit this place again and again.
The setting was perfect for the anniversary dinner that my then-BF had planned. The place is cute, cozy and very intimate. We sat a two-top by the window and stared into each others eyes the entire evening.
Ew. Vomit. Kidding.
We did have a lovely evening, but it was mostly due to the amazing food and good wine. I love the fact that the menu has a few starters and then just one of every type of dish: one chicken, one meat, one fish, one pasta, etc.
I ordered the grilled artichokes to start and they were the best I've ever had. They were so meaty and cooked so perfectly that they melted in your mouth. I had the fish and it was quite nice. I can't remember the ingredients, but it was cooked in a blanc sauce and was pretty hearty. The BF had the special, ribs of some sort, and they were seriously ridiculous. Fell off of the bone, soooooo tender and juicy. The burgundy sauce was amazing. He literally lapped up every last bit of sauce with his bread. He even considered asking if he could get more sauce....and that's why we're no longer together. Kidding.
Our waitress was so friendly , knowledgeable and attentive. The sommelier made some great recommendations and we were overall very pleased with the experience!
Okay, Maverick, fair's fair. I've had your brunch countless times now and your dinner once, and although the dinner was a solid albeit unimpressive meal, the brunches were inventive and toothsome.
The first brunch I had the duck confit hash made with oyster mushrooms and potatoes in a mushroom cream sauce and served with two poached eggs. Basically, it was perfect. Not too oily, not too healthful. And the coffee. I'm by no means a coffee aficionado, but I tend to take note when a restaurant doesn't treat coffee as an afterthought, and I felt that Maverick's coffee had was exceptional and truly addictive. It may be reason enough to go. The wait for a table had been about a half hour, but the staff was kind enough to serve mimosas and coffee to us while we waited outside.
On my second visit for brunch, I tried the no less creative Andouille Sausage "Benedict", a hearty variation on a breakfast favorite involving a light crawfish and jalapeno hollandaise. They mixed up a pretty good Arnold Palmer as well. There wasn't a line this time, so the entire experience took about an hour and was surprisingly convenient for a top-quality brunch on a Sunday morning.
Based on the brunches, I'm beginning to think (and hope) that the underwhelming dinner experience I had may have merely been an off-night for the restaurant, and so I may try to go back for dinner in the not-too-distant future.

So M., my best friend from college, visited me last week after staying at the scenic Asilomar retreat in Monterey for some science thing. Yeah, he's one of those science geeks. You know the type: they talk about inseminating fruit flies with Trix and how eugenics is like Jenga -- don't ask me, I'm an idiot and I sucked at lab science, proud Humanities Japo here and would you like a Doubleshot in your Frappucino? Also, he still lives in NYC so he's a major diva and raving bitch with discriminating taste PLUS he's Italian so OF COURSE if you fuck with him he'll rip out your heart and eat it in front of you or some shit like that. Basically, he's a more intense Italian version of me, if it's even possible to be MORE intense -- or more Italian for that matter. I've admittedly gone soft after living on the West Coast for so long, surrounded as I am by serial abusers of Xanax.
So pace the typical awkward socially stunted science geek, M. is a fount of verbiage. He can also be something of an asshole. Like back in the day when I dated this Romanian guy for a little while, he'd always ask "how your little Ceaucescu?" See? Asshole.
He may be chock full of invective, but he's a smooth talker with an irrepressibly tasteless sense of humor, something I yearn for these days since I think the humor here on the West Coast SUCKS (excepting certain yelpers, of course). Chalk up another win for the fucking PC police.
Anyway, he really wanted something "meaty" for dinner. After considering -- then discarding -- some stodgy steakhouse where men in suits cigar-bang their trophy wives under the table, we wisely opted for the warm, intimate atmosphere and solid cuisine of Maverick.
The setting -- an intimate space with brick colored walls and various lightboxed maps of America -- was the ideal setting for our bitchfest. We talked about the appetite gene for mosquitos. About the runaway gentrification of NYC. How Bloomberg is a womanizing pig. How we HATE people who take up the entire sidewalk, then stop to have a conversation (Look bitches, we're in a fucking city not a country club, MOVE LIKE IT!). And how Park Slope is so PLAYED OUT -- now he's more of an Upper West Side guy, which basically means he's shopping at Zabar's every day and turning Jewish, and if you ask me that's a mecheieh and a mitzvah, nu?
In addition, Maverick's compelling "New American" comfort food was perfectly executed. His Pickled Plum Salad? Marvelously light and refreshing, and a proper palate cleanser for his rich Sonoma County Duck Leg. Because I yearn to collapse of heart failure in the near future, I indulged by ordering the Mac n' Cheese and Southern Fried Chicken. The Mac n' Cheese was liquid lactose heaven, smooth and devoid of any grainy texture. And I reveled in the fried chicken: it was wonderfully crisp, dense like an artery clogged with buttermilk, and at rest in a pool of buttery grits and thick brown gravy. I think the food here is an unparalleled American success, and not in the "Mission Accomplished" way, but in the legit Drop The A-bomb VJ Day Bitches! way (oh and fuck you, Harry Truman).
And speaking of American successes, let's face it: nothing BUT NOTHING screams American Success Story more than the acculturated offspring of lower class, initially disenfranchised immigrants like us who maintain contact with our heritages by mercilessly ridiculing them. RIGHT?!? I mean, c'mon, that's the fucking American Dream right there! VIVA LA NUEVA AMERICA!!
What?

A friend made reservations 3 days earlier so there was no waiting and they let us sit and order drinks before the rest of our party arrived which I liked. Their special that day for brunch was a coffee cake which was nice and warm with a sweet crust and moist inside. I had the Maverick brunch sandwich which was unimpressive in its presentation but good enough. Basically eggs and bacon with lettuce and tomato in a roll served with home fries. To put it into perspective, it's $10, but with the $1 SF healthcare fee and tax and tip comes out to almost $14 for a mediocre breakfast sandwich. Service was friendly and we had a nice table but I can't say this will be at the top of my restaurant list.
Leave it to a restaurant with a name like Maverick to go off on its lonesome ownsome and blaze a new trail into the mac and cheese beyond. Their bechamel mac and cheese is without a doubt the BEST I have ever had. Seriously, I used the remaining bread to sop the bechamel sauce clean off the dish. Their fried chicken, while not "Ad Hoc good," was still undeniably finger lickin', and easily trumps the fried chicken at Farmer Brown, Front Porch, Hard Knox, Angeline's (you get the idea) . And the orange walls against organic wood accents are as easy on the eyes as their food is on the stomach. Ahh.
I had brunch here recently, and that was equally fantastic. The buttermilk cinnamon-sugar donut holes were perfectly delicious: freshly made so they were warm, dense with a hard outer shell and sweetly coated. mmmm! The cheesy grits were good, too. And the service was friendly and attentive. They even let us bring in our own birthday cupcakes. Minor gripe: they tried to clear our plates multiple times while we were still working on our food. Though no brunch resies obviously means that they have to keep the crowds moving. I hear ya.
Even after all this time (measured in sf culinary years), this place is still right up there in my book. Certainly far from a flash-in-the-fried-chicken-pan.

Friday night and my Hottie Blade and I are going to the theatre. What could be more fun than going out to dinner and then see a play. We decided to try Maverick on 17th Street and it totally lived up to the great reviews we read. I'll join the Chorus Line of people who say that Maverick is worth a try.
Maverick gets 40 of 50 Fussy Fusspot Points... and 4 stars.
---
Clean table and dishes? 5 of 5 points. Table, dishes, silverware, napkins, glasses and even the menus were all very clean. Good show!
Clean server? 5 of 5 points. Pristinely clean.
Clean bathroom? 5 of 5 points. Clean and stylish too!
Subtotal = 15 of 15 Fussy Points on the Clean Scale.
Service? 5 of 5 points. Very attentive service. Our Server was Heather and she was great - lots of information about the menu and ingredients. I saw her swirling a bit of wine in each of the glasses at the table next to us so asked her about it and she taught us about "priming the wine glass". She was great.
Ambiance? 4 of 5 points.
Friends from Finland Practical Scale? 3 of 5 points. Very convenient to BART and the Mission Street Bus. The tables are small and close together so not too convenient for anyone in a wheel chair.
Food? 7 of 10 points. We especially enjoyed the Fried Green Tomatoes. I had the Fried Chicken dinner. It was delicious and the chicken skin was sooooo crispy! If you love fried chicken with very crispy skin then you gotta try Maverick.
Price/Food ratio? 3 of 5 points. Two appetizers, two main courses, a side of veggies, one glass of wine and one iced tea for $100.
Now I know what you all are thinking... you're thinking "What! No cocktails? What was wrong with Fussy and Blade? You guys always have cocktails!" Well, we were going to the theatre so didn't want to be drowsy before the show. And besides, Maverick has a great wine selection but doesn't have a full bar.
Bonus? 3 of 5 points. 1 bonus point for the coat hooks under each table. So convenient! So practical! 1 bonus point for the very cool comic books and puzzle from the old Maverick TV show framed and hanging in the bathroom. (Which of Maverick brothers was sexier? Bart or Bret?) And 1 bonus point for how well they treated my Hottie Blade while he was waiting for me to arrive.
Total: 40 Fussy Fusspot Points.

Brunch here is fantabulous!
A must have-- the Pecan Crusted French Toast!
This is a lovely spot! My friend and I came here spontaneous-like after two false starts at rnm and Beretta. There was one table left in the pocket-size Maverick and it was clearly just for us.
The meal was fantastic, the service was great. I was craving a martini and was a little disappointed by their lack of a full bar (but really, where the hell would they put it?) but their wine list was full of wonderful stuff and gin was swiftly forgotten. The service was wonderful. I did have my doubts about the cheese plate--as it only offered one kind of cheese. But Sir Francis Drake from Cowgirl Creamery carries its own, and the honey, spiced pecans, grilled bread, and that perfect pear were wonderful accompaniments.
All in all, an excellent experience. I will look forward to going back.

Upsides:
Ambiance: Relaxed and a little upscale - small dining area - but has 1 table for group of 10 and 1 table for group of 6.
Food: I've been here twice for dinner, solid good upscale southern fare. Fried chicken was so moist inside and crispy on the outside and not too greasy. The cauliflower side dish was wonderful, tasty and fresh. The warm cookies and milk were a perfect ending that made you feel all warm and cozy inside.
Parking can be found for cheap right nearby on Hoff.
You can make reservations on opentable.com - very convenient.
Downside:
They don't sell hard liquor, only wine and beer.
I like Spork (another comfort food place) a little better - b/c it's a bit more casual - but I'll probably come back to Maverick for girlz nights out...

I loved dinner at Maverick. The place is pretty small but cozy. Food is soul-ish. They have catfish, fried chicken, and steak... what else could anyone ask for, haha!. Seriously though, we had a three different appetizers. All were good but my favorite is grilled squid salad. The combination of tender squid and the crunchy slices of veggies plus the garbanzo bean puree (i know doesn't sound appetizing but just take my word on this one - you must try it!!!)
Steak was great and all the desserts were just too good. My fav believe it or not were the freshly baked cookies and milk.
Dear Maverick,
I think you're a great place, but you didn't blow my socks off or anything. Sorry.
You see, I wasn't sure what disturbed me so, but upon reflection, I think I've figured it out: You're analagous to a disappointing date. Sigh.
I had anticipated our time together, and I really loved your charm and attentiveness, as well as attention to detail in your menu offerings. But then, the food arrived, and well, you simply just didn't live up to the hype. In fact, with each course, you became worse. And when dessert arrived...burnt...I knew we weren't going to be a good match.
Maybe it was an off night for you. I'll give you that. It happens and I understand. However, in the meantime, I'm going to move on. I hope you understand. Best wishes. XOXO

When I was in 10th grade, my mom and I moved to Seattle. I was assigned to a high school where I didn't know anyone. It was already difficult enough being a teen but then starting a new school on top of it was a nightmare.
One of my first friends was Lottie. Her family was from Georgia. I would go to their apartment after school. Lottie's grandma would make Georgia Fried Chicken on Thursdays. My mom has been vegetarian/vegan my entire life, so I rarely got the chance to eat what Lottie's family called "Southern Style". From what I understood, eating "Southern Style" meant a lot of deep fried meat covered in gravy. I spent a lot of time in their home, but Thursdays was my favorite because of the chicken.
I haven't had fried chicken like that until Maverick. The chicken was nicely breaded and not greasy. You could tell it was marinated in something special, probably the same buttermilk lime marinade that Lottie's grandma used. The grits were creamy and the greens had a tang of vinegar. There was even gravy. The meal was fantastic.
I also had the Baltimore Crab Fluffs which were very good. To drink I had strawberry lemonade, which they kept refilling. Glorious.
The waitstaff was fantastic and attentive. Everything was top notch. I am Rockford fan, so I greatly appreciated the Maverick inspired decor. The bathroom was especially nice and had thick absorbent paper towels.
It was about $50 a person, including tip. I would have paid double.

Excellent food, wine and atmosphere in this small gem! We chose this restaurant as our original choice for the evening screwed up the reservation, and we needed to find something nice on the fly. We followed the recommendations from fellow yelpers and ended up there. One word sums it up: AWSOME!
The service was outstanding, too. It felt like everyone working there actually enjoyed working at this place!
This review is for brunch only.
First of all, they take reservations. AND they are ready for you when you arrive on time. We're off to a good morning.
The cinnamon doughnut holes were sinfully fantastic. Crispy on the outside, soft in the middle and plenty o cinnamon. I loved them!
The huevos rancheros was also excellent. Really good flavor and they had a really good (maybe homemade?) hot sauce on the side.
I didn't eat it, but I also heard the oyster po boy was excellent.
Yum! From what I've seen, the dinner menu doesn't work for vegetarians, but do yourself a favor and go there for brunch.

Duck Confit Hash
(Crimini mushrooms, potatoes, duck confit, poached eggs, mushroom cream sauce): 4 stars. Good, but I guess I was expecting pick-up-your-plate-and-lick-it-clean delicious. Very creative, but could have done an even better job pleasing my taste buds.
Profiteroles with Sea Salt Caramel Gelato
(Chocolate sauce, chopped walnuts): 5 stars! Now THIS was pick-up-your-plate-and-lick-it-clean delicious! Sea Salt Caramel Gelato! Someone tell me where to find this stuff! The slightly salty-sweet gelato went PERFECTLY with the chocolate sauce and chopped walnuts! What a combination. The almost cream-puff-like shell of the profiteroles were also very good. (Ummm...Do I have chocolate sauce on my face?)
Service: 3 stars. Friendly, but our food was very slow. Our server did come by and tell us way later that the Duck Confit Hash usually takes a bit longer to make, but that would have been nice to know at the time when we ordered. Did they have to catch the duck and kill it too when we placed our order?! Took unusually long, but luckily I was in the company of girlfriends and we had a lot of catching up to do. Even our dessert seemed to take longer than it should have, but the profiteroles were entirely worth the wait! Go to Maverick. But don't go super hungry or you will end up eating a lot of bread while waiting. :) Oh and make reservations. This place is tiny.
Came here for brunch...
One plus is that this place serves brunch until 3pm....great for us late risers :)
Pecan crusted French toast was kinda dry, but I love pecans so I ate it all. The bacon was done a little too crispy for my liking, but again I love bacon so I ate it all :)
I tried the Andouille Sausage Benedict - It was SUPER yummy...very spicy...I probably could only eat half of it if I ordered it by myself. It's probably a good dish to split with someone and then order something sweet too to split, like the pancakes.
I got the blackberry mimosa.....hmmm wasnt impressed. FYI - this place only serves beer and wine, so you won't be able to order bloody marys, my bf's brunch beverage staple :)
Service was good. The place is tiny, so I'm sure it gets super packed during peak brunch hourse...luckily we went around 2pm.....most normal people have eaten by then I suppose.

Huge disappointment & will not be back.
We came for dinner and tried the crab fluffs, arugula salad, and the fried chicken. Nothing was good, and we left wondering if this was just a really off night.
I agree with the other reviews that the atmosphere kind of makes it. It's cool inside, but it's a small space and there's a lot of activity when the servers and busser are buzzing around. It's not an intimate restaurant and it was difficult to have a conversation without being intruded upon. We even had our salt and pepper shakers removed while midst close conversation. Nothing screams, "Leave," like having an arm cut off your line of sight to your dinner partner while in mid conversation.
The food was a huge miss. The apps- both the salad and crab fluffs -really lacked in pizazz. Then the fried chicken, like other reviews mentioned, was oddly sweet and pink. I've had free range, organic chicken before and it's never been raw pink when served. Oh, and the chicken didn't taste like it was free range organic fun loving bird. No, it tasted like Fosters Farms which I believe is also in Fresno. The food left me craving a number of other great restaurants in the vicinity including KFC. (though I don't consider KFC a great restaurant)
This is my personal pet peeve- I am over being charged a surcharge for the SF Health Care Ordinance. In fact, I don't believe this place would even qualify under the ordinance considering it doesn't seem possible to fit 19 employees in the establishment. Based on my own unofficial survey I've noticed those restaurants who pass on the SF Health Care Ordinance tend to well.....serve low quality food. Considering this place charges the equivalent to or even more than other wonderful establishments in the near vicinity I don't see why they feel justified passing on the surcharge when other supposedly like restaurants don't.
Last, I noticed the owner likes to review himself in order to publicly dispute Yelp reviews giving himself 5 stars when he does.
In sum, either they were just having a really off night (tragically so) or this place just blows.

Possibly a three and a half, but I can't say I loved it. The atmosphere is very smart and cool, and I would say that's the primary draw. No big complaints about the food; I had the sturgeon with mushrooms and black rice, side of mac n cheese, but no raves either. Maverick is a fine choice if you want to go for an upscale night out with some friends, but they serve more as a stage for that than as a destination for the 'wow' , memorable meal.

Went to Maverick on a whim with a wad of cash and a friend of mine celebrating her birthday. On a Monday, wines in the bottle were 40% off, so we ordered one from the back stacks. Cheers we gulped down the dark and syrupy while deliberating the menu. She went for the multi course tasting and I for the fried chicken. Apps were brought, eaten, and appreciated. I chowed an arugula salad like a horse set out to founder. It was good, green and had dollops of bacon doled out without regard for skimp. Then came the chick - fried all buttered and battered up like a grand slamming superstud pinch hitting for the pennant. Damn that was juicy chicken. Supplanting my previous fave Firefly for best fry chicken in San Fran I ate it down bite after bite and then dipped into the collards curled up on grits buried beneath. Good lord, they too sang high high unto the lords of the bitchin' kitchen. I have to say, this food was the scrumptch. As for my friend's tasting dealio, I don't even know. I think it was pretty good but I couldn't wrap my head around it as it came out course times five. Dessert was brought'n but damn if I can even remember what it was. It all faded to black as I licked my chicken fatted lips and laughed over the last splash of vino.

I wanted to like this place. Living near the Mission, you can get spoiled with all the great restaurants. But when the wait staff starts to know you by first name and they're giving your boyfriend free absinthe, so he's worthless to you later, it might be a good time to check out a new restaurant.
Enter Maverick...I have nostalgic days of the spot when Limon was there. It's Sunday evening 7ish, we don't want to cook. We want to spend our hard earned money on a tasty dinner and hopefully I'll get lucky later. I check on yelp, Maverick is open until 9pm. We walk the 10 blocks to Maverick and arrive at 8:30, perfect. Walk in and wait awhile at the front. I think it's rude to just sit at a table. Finally someone comes up to us and says they might already be closed, but they're not sure. They say to wait here and they'll find out. He runs off. We see him then to return to talk to the chef in the open kitchen. Chef starts to make unpleasant faces. He clearly doesn't want to serve us. We look at each other and realize now if they do seat us, we'll feel guilty...geez. Guy stops talking to chef and goes to the back.
I'm thinking, this is the witching hour, if they're not going to serve us, please let us know now, so we can quickly go somewhere else before everything closes. A woman we haven't seen before comes up to us and tells us they're closed. Okay, we start to leave.
I've waited tables for years in the city and I felt dissed and annoyed by this sloppy experience. When a place is asking for high prices for an entree, they should have there act together a little more. I mentioned to the woman that it would have been helpful to have the time they close listed on their door. I assumed Yelp had it wrong. It would have saved us waiting around and having to witness that staff/chef drama scenario.
I didn't mean it in a negative way, but just a suggestion. Give people the proper communication they need to just move on. I think she took it the wrong way and gave me all this attitude. We're really hungry at this point and I don't need this when there are so many lovely and amazing restaurants just around the corner. Moving on.
A friendly suggestion for Maverick staff: When it looks like things are winding down, decide all together, chef included, when you'll stop seating people. Then put a "closed" sign on the door. Then, everyone wins. Now lets go to Range, have some delicious food and maybe boyfriend will be worthless with Absinthe in him, but we'll be treated well by people who know what they're doing....and the food is amazing. Hopefully, he won't be too tired for later.

I'm not a huge of the Mission. I guess I'm just not hip enough.
But I WILL venture out there from time to time to check out a new restaurant. The things I will tolerate for good food.
Like today for example. We drove out to the Mission in search of the acclaimed Maverick for some brunch. Two illegal U-turns later, we finally found a parking spot only half a block away. Score! During our short walk down 16th making a right onto Mission, we maneuver around an angry couple. Man (who stank of alcohol) yelling out "Don't you walk away from me, Bitch". Woman who then sped up her gait just a tad faster. I ponder a while how lovely it would be to move here and become neighbors with more charming couples like this.
And that's why I'm just apparently not hip enough to appreciate the Mission.
On with the review. Our brunch was good- not great great great- but good. I ordered the chorizo and eggs (scrambled eggs w/ green onion cheese grits, cornbread muffin with honey) and the boy ordered the omelet (leek, garlic, mustard greens, cheese w/ home fries on the side). Although both were tasty and satisfying, there are more impressive bruncheries out there. We're really lucky to be dwelling in a 7x7 mile space on this planet that houses over 3,000 restaurants. It is a foodie's heaven.
On a final note, the order of Maverick doughnut holes were my favorite part of the meal. They were delicious, light and fluffy doughnuts coated in a sugar and cinnamon shimmer. Sheer delight.

We were a party of 5 with an early reservation on a Saturday night. Wow, what can I say with all the other reviews already out there except the average star rating speaks for itself. We had a couple bottles of tasty, but reasonable wine. I had the sturgeon entree which was perfectly cooked. The mac n cheese was a bit too thin for my taste, but still tasty. The waitress was pleasant and the service right on. If I lived close by I would certainly be here on a regular basis!
Great food. Great service. I love the southern nights fried chicken with the fixins' !! I've introduced at least 5 people to this place, and we've never had a bad meal.
When I think of comfort food in the Mission its normally a super carnitas burrito at El Farolito or the falafel at Truly Mediterranean for "comfort take-out". With that said......
I think Maverick is a great place for "comfort brunch". We had reservations via Opentable. Bonus 700 pts!! Service was great and I didn't get any pretentious vibe at all from the staff that I've read from other fellow yelpers. The place is a lot smaller than I thought it would be. I look forward to dinner the next time to try the fried chicken. For brunch next time I would like to try the Andouille Benedict and cheese grits for the sides.
We started with:
Cinnamon Donuts - I'll pass on these next time. Nothing special, I wished there was like a berry sauce to dip them with.
Blackberry and Tangelo Mimosas - I like the Blackberry more. I could've had like 5 of them!
Duck Confit Hash - Unbelievable! Eggs perfectly poached and just the perfect portion. But I didn't see many mushrooms which was ok with me.
Mac n Cheese side - Average, it didn't have that nice crust on top that I would've liked.
Brunch Sandwich - The star is the smoky nueske bacon. Nuff said. Probably wouldn't order this again.
As we're leaving outside of Maverick....3 officers are tackling 2 dealers on the ground and handcuff them on the hood of a green gremlin with blue flames!!!! LOL. And I'm having to explain to my friend visiting from Seattle no this doesn't happen all the time....just every other day. Unfortunately that has to be my last impression of my first time here. Back to reality in the Mission I suppose, gentrification really?

This review is for the brunch, only (haven't tried dinner here yet).
4 stars for my tasty breakfast of duck confit hash, which was made with crimini mushrooms, potatoes, duck confit, poached eggs, and a most delicious mushroom cream sauce.
4 stars, as well, for the intimate, tastefully designed space.
3 stars for the lattee, which tasted kinda funny, I thought.
3 stars for the extremely slow service, both in taking our breakfast order and also waiting for an extremely long time for our food to come. we began to wonder if perhaps they had to run out and find the duck for my breakfast, or something!
3 stars for the cinnamon sugar doughnut holes. they were fine, but nothing to write home about. but what am i complaining about? i will eat sugary things just about any time they are in front of me!
i'm torn between a 3 and a 4 overall, but will round up, with hopes that the slow service was just because they were having an off day or something.

I never thought it would be possible for me to fall in love with another man. Then I met Bucky. Bucky is everything I want in a man. He's big and hairy like a sasquatch. He likes movies. He's a video game nerd. He even reads a lot.
He took me on my first date to Maverick. It was an Easter brunch. Granted his wife...and six other friends were there...but he sat next to me. So I think I was "officially" his date.
The brunch was good. No...excellent. We started off with the doughnut holes/beignets and they were warm and gooey and perfect with a little slather of butter (our friend Peter's idea). For the main course, I had the andouille sausage eggs benedict and was really floored. The andouille was perfectly smokey, and the poached eggs with the hollandaise sauce on the english muffin were perfect. It was simple and affordable and I couldn't have picked a better dish. I also tried the duck confit hash that Peter was having (yes Peter we're just friends). It was excellent as well.
The drinks were magnificent. Peter and I had a host-recommended glass of sauvignon blanc while we were waiting outside and then I hit the different varieties of mimosas (blood orange, blackberry) when we sat down to eat.
The service was probably the most impressive. The host was extremely attentive and the staff was very helpful and friendly. We happened to sit right next to the kitchen area and even got to converse with the chef and sous-chef while they slaved away to serve a packed restaurant of hungry Easter morning patrons.
The ambiance was perfect since it's such a small place. It's the perfect place to go in the Mission for Easter when the weather was perfect out. Really couldn't ask for better. Except maybe for Peter to stop touching me under the table. And for Bucky to stop resisting me. I'm going gay for you, buddy...don't leave me hanging.

I had dinner here with some friends last Friday and although I'm not a huge fan of upscale down home cooking, the whole experience left me quite content. The place is tiny and there's only one bathroom, but they make the best of it. The waitstaff was kind. We got our orders and drinks in reasonable time and the food was well prepared and good.
I sampled the mussels, artichoke hearts, fried chicken, cod and pork medallions. The mussels were great with the smokey bacon, and creme fraiche. Not as delicate tasting as your typical moules mariniere but with some bread, it turned out to be a savory and filling entree. This was following by a very excellent Cab Sav flight selection. They have a wonderful wine menu that should not be overlooked.
The rest of the food was just ok. The fried chicken had some funky seasoning that made the coating a bit sweet; the pork was really tender and had an excellent mushroom sauce and the cod was most and delicate. Nothing was particularly outstanding but over all, it was a consistently good meal.

I love Maverick. It's the kind of place to take close friends on a warm night to throw back glasses of wine and talk about life changes. It's a small venue with low lighting and sleek wood tables. The duck confit and fried chicken are really good. It's a bit upscale for home cooking but it's well worth it for the atmosphere.

This is Mike, owner and general manager of Maverick. First of all I would like to thank all Yelpers for their reviews; the good, the bad and the just OK's. Of course we love the good reviews but we really enjoy reading the not so good reviews. These are the most helpful, as they show us where we might have deficiencies or need to address problems.
This review relates to Maggie M.'s review below (click sort by 'time'). As a business owner I know this is dangerous territory to tread but I feel I have to defend Maverick against obvious slander. We love our guests and our Yelper's and do not like having to spend our time defending ourselves.
First of all, our clientele represents the beautifully diverse ethnic makeup of San Francisco. Maggie's assertion that we only like serving Nuevo rich white people is insulting to us, our large Asian, Latino, and African American regular clientele, and our non-white employees. Second, although Citysearch it is a reputable website, since Yelp came along, I never read or react to Maverick's reviews on Citysearch (we only get 2 or so a year). As you will see from the e-mail exchange below it was more than likely inappropriate material for the average diner.
These diners were treated with the respect and courtesy we offer to all of our guests, even though they were unapologetically 30 minutes late and, at one point, Erik asked the server if "it would be a douche bag move to go smoke a cigarette outside while his girlfriend was in the bathroom." We feel the language speaks for itself. It should be noted that while these guests were self-identified whiskey drinkers and asked the waiter in question to choose the wine for them, they have later suggested that this choice was something of an insult to them. We find this difficult to understand. With this being said, I urge you to make your own judgments and thank you for reading.
HER BOYFRIENDS ORIGINAL E-MAIL (apparently this is the e-mail asking for an apology)
"I will make it my mission ...to inform every single person in this city about the rude, condescending treatment and clear lack of respect I received from your service staff tonight. I work in the "up and coming" neighborhood you assholes are using to market your insipid little pit, and you clearly misjudged the person you were pissing off with your shitty service, ridiculous food and overpriced wine.
$35 bucks for a tiny bottle of crap wine? I wouldn't pay $35 if Jesus Christ Himself pissed into a glass in front of my eyes.
Good job douche bags.
Who the fuck do you think you are?
MY REPLY
Erik,
I am truly sorry your experience at our restaurant was so bad. However, after reading your e-mail, the only thing I can say is that Maverick is not for everybody. We tend to cater to a more mature diner.
PS: I hope you don't mind that we intend to share your e-mail with all of our restaurant compatriots. It is truly the funniest written tantrum we have ever seen.
ERIK'S REPLY
You cater to new-money cunts.
Knock yourself out asshole. And don't walk home by yourself.
We strive to create an enjoyable experience for all of Maverick's guests and try our hardest to rectify bad experiences. Nevertheless, when someone voices there unhappiness in such an immature way I find it hard to take it seriously. Thanks again!

If I am not mistaken, this used to be where Lime was located before they moved? At any rate my boyfriend & I decided to dine here right before a show at the Victoria Theatre a couple of blocks away. Also, there was a 1,000 point bonus to reserve on open table. The menu looked really good but I suffered from sticker shock. I ended up having the pan seared hangar steak, which was cooked and prepared perfectly. The staff was attentive and friendly.
