For the first time ever, I'm actually reconsidering a previous Yelp on the same chain, but a different location.  I had tried a Maurice's BBQ just outside of Columbia, SC about a little over a year ago, and I was gravely disappointed.   The neon yellow mustard on my BBQ pulled pork sandwich looked as bad as it tasted.  Under any other circumstances, I'd have never returned.
Adding to this, I learned of Mr. Maurice's personal political policies, and while normally that wouldn't be a deterrent, it solidified another reason why I wouldn't try his product again.  Well, I'm not a gambling man, so I'll be the first to admit that today while traveling down I-95, I spotted this mecca on a road sign and I pulled in, more or less as a prank on my wife.  The joke was on me.
We ordered the 1/4 chicken (dark) combo and while it was supposed to come with french fries, they gave us the Carolina Hash over Rice.  This was an excellent mistake.  While it was greasy, it was tasty.
The chicken was covered with the aforementioned neon yellow mustard BBQ sauce.  I had to laugh at first, but after the second bite I decided that it was far from horrible.  The chicken was a little dry, but otherwise it was good!  The mustard-based sauce wasn't overpowering and it was actually....good!  My wife was a little less impressed.
I had also ordered another BBQ sandwich, and it was not loaded up with the neon yellow sauce as my last experience was, and due to the lesser amount of sauce being on the sandwich, it was actually good!  I'm speechless and shocked.
I had become accustom to both Texas and Carolina-style BBQ, and this was uniquely foreign.  It was a shock to see it the first time, and I'm sure that my first experience was still legit in the review, as the food was still not great.  This second time, the food was better, less mustard sauce (which I think was key) and the mistake of not giving us french fries proved to be a winning combination.  Not all Carolina-style BBQ is vinegar based.   As someone mentioned before, be open minded to this mustard-based sauce.  You won't be disappointed.
The service wasn't great, but the food made up for it, and I actually went against my normal stance on bad service to redeem them on their product.  They screwed up my order, but for the best.  I would try them again, and maybe only this location in the future.
A Columbia, SC friend of mine was defending this local favorite at my scoffs, but I have to call him and tell him he was right.

This is a must stop when traveling along I-95 for us.  The beef brisket is so moist and so good get it before they run out, also the pulled pork sandwhich and the hash, the hash is so darn great ... the best stuff you'll ever get.

It's such a convenient stop for us on I-95, we usually stop here anytime we are on a long trip. The bbq sauce is very different than any other I've had, but I love mustard! The free bottle of sauce is a pleasant surprise you get when you spend more than $50... which we always do!

    Run away from this place!

I'm driving to my Moms house in Florida with the kids so they can spend a few weeks in the sun. Of course I hear: We're hungry from the back seat!

    I see signs on 95S

    Maurice's BBQ 20 miles
    Maurice's BBQ 10 miles
    Maurice's BBQ 5 miles

Now I'm working myself up to frenzy. I picture in my mind, they killed a fresh pig and I'm going to BBQ heaven!

I pull into the parking lot with my NY license plates and I'm ready for BBQ!!! I lived in Memphis for almost two years so I know the real deal.

My kids are rattling off what they want and I place my order. When I start to look around I noticed we're not in Kansas anymore...... I see the sauce bottles with confederate flags. Books like: "Myths & Realities of American Slavery." WTF!!!!

I thought this was a joke, I expected someone with a video camera to come out like I was punked!! No joke, these clowns are for real.

The food comes out and my kids are making faces.

Whats the problem you ask? Everything and I do mean everything is covered in mustard!! DOUBLE WTF?

I go back to the desk, yeah we use a mustard based sauce on our BBQ. This is something I never heard of in my life, I asked them to swap out my 10 year olds food with PLAIN chicken fingers and I dealt with the mess of mustard on my BBQ plate. I had mustard under my nails, on my teeth. Why. Why would anyone use this junk when there is a sweet BBQ sauce from North Carolina?

Yuck man.. When you see this place on 95, keep driving.

It's not the absolute best, but it will hit the spot.  For the yanks they pass through come with an open mind.  This  is south carolina mustard based sauce.  Ignorance to the traditional local type of BBQ is no reason to write a poor review.

"EEGAD !!"....I'll get to the food, but  when you walk into this joint, the first thing that  you run into is a room full of propaganda about the Southern Confederate way of life, as Maurice sees it. As a northerner, I found it somewhat offensive yet somewhat humorous. In this guy's mind he is still fighting the Civil War...so.. if you stop for BBQ,.. be prepared for this.

The food...As far as a SC mustard based BBQ, it's pretty darn good! I've had the pulled pork, ribs, baked beans and slaw ,all good. They have a buffet, which I have never partaken of. I have been there a few times at different times of the day and evening and it is never really overly crowded. the people who work there are pleasant and helpful and you can always purchase to go orders as well as bottles of the mustard based sauce. Upon further research, as one of the other scriveners opined, Maurice has made the news pretty often as a result of his views. It is my understanding that several food stores have ceased selling his sauces because he puts a Confederate flag on the bottle. Personally, I think that's kinda small (since they lost), but I understand the angst that it may cause.

The Place is very convenient off of the Santee exit of I-95.

I would probably give this place more stars based on the BBQ, but the entire package won't allow this in my mind.

    I love serendipity.

"I need to go potty now!"
"OK.   Look at the signs on the side of the road.  If you see a place where you want me to stop for your potty,  yell."
As silence overtook my car for a few moments, I spotted a huge billboard with that caught my eye...

"Maurice's BBQ.   Award winning recipe."   Ut oh...I thought....another tourist trap.     But it was the only thing different than the dozens of Burger Kings, McDonalds, Cracker Barrels, etc.

"Who wants BBQ?"   Unsynchopated mumblings and grunts.   "OK.   I will drive by that place first and check it out.   If it is a dive we will go to Cracker Barrel."   More grumblings and grunts.   But not a "NO" was spoken.   So off we went to Exit 98 on I-95

I drove by.   It looked like an old drive through burger place built in the 60's that seen better days.   The old style architecture was still in place....just fresh paint that boasted  "Maurice's BBQ....Award winning."

Well my kid had to go......so I stopped and let her go in.  Worst case I would buy just one sandwich to pay for the facility stop.

I was greeting by a very friendly but straight forward graying mature lady who could tell I was a first timer.    Before I knew it, she was offering samples of their BBQ, free.   I took the bait.   I found out that Maurice's dad formulated a secret recipe and passed it down (what recipe isn't secret btw?)   They still make things like they did 50 years ago.

Wow.   The samples tasted great....I passed it around to my kids....and they gave it the thumbs up.    So $61 later I had 6 meals and drinks for everyone.   And if you spend more than $50, you get a free bottle of their BBQ sauce.  Wow thanks.   This is how the food came out...

    1.  The sauce:   This is South Carolina BBQ sauce which is mustard base.   One of my daughter's hates mustard....but when she tried it, she liked it enough to get a BBQ sandwich with it.   That is how good it was.   For a mustard based sauce this was truly excellent.  Tangy mustard taste that wasn't too sharp and overwhelming.   Many other spices in this concoction.   On the sweet side.   Bold but complemented the meat and you can still taste the difference between pork and chicken and beef.  5 stars
    2.  Ribs:   Done very well.   Meat was tender and was able to be pulled off the bone, but it wasn't mushy and overcooked.   Done just about right.  Rudy's in Albuquerque still has this place beat on ribs.  4 stars.
    3.  Chicken:   Done nearly perfectly.  Meat was moist and tender, not over or undercooked.    Chicken was a little on the small size.  4 stars
    4.  Beef brisket:   Done extremely well, tender but with some body.   Was well liked by my family member.   4 stars
    5.  Onion rings:   The big ones out of real onions,  looked like hand dipped and deep fried.   Excellent and tender.  Slightly on the greasy side but still tasty.   4 stars
    6.  Hush puppies:   One of the best if not the best hush puppies I or my family has ever had.   That good.   Deep fried so crunchy on the outside and tender and moist on the inside...like cake.  But the seasonings were just fabulous.   Most hush puppies are bland and seasoned lightly.   This one stood out and I could have eaten a basket of these things.   Perfect.   5 stars
    6.  Cole slaw:  Better than most.   Very flavorful and stood out on it's own.   4 stars.
    7.  Carolina hash:   This is shredded pork with sauce placed over white rice.   This turned out great.    This is considered a side dish....so what a bonus if you like BBQ.

If you like a mustard based, Carolina style BBQ, you will be coming back to this place again and again.   This is a chain of about 14 stores throughout South Carolina.

For being a few hundred yards off of  I-95, this is a 5 star BBQ place.  You will never find better quality food just off any Interstate in this country.   This is a must stop if you drive past Exit 98 on I-95.   Don't snack or get something else to eat if you are within 200 miles of this place.

I am so glad this time we had to take that potty break.

We love bbq, and have passed this place en route to SC many times.  We happened to stop by yesterday at lunchtime and was pleasantly surprised by the food, although what I've read about the owner is odd (more on that later).

The service was great--very friendly service.  We didn't know what to get, so we got the combo as suggested by the cashier (enough for 2 people!). $20, +$1 for white meat chicken + 2 teas.  It was actually enough for at least 3 hungry people.
Ribs (3): half and half--half of each were falling-off-the-bone tender, but half dry and chewy
Chicken: mustard sauce dry cooked.  Good, but a little dry
Pulled Pork: mustard sauce; slightly sweet, but incredible, especially when made into a sandwich with the biscuit
    Biscuit: see above
Slaw: slightly sweet with a hint of cinnamon
Hush Puppies: incredible.  Not too sweet, good onion flavour, melted in the mouth
    Beans: good, a little sweet
    Mac & Cheese: average
    Fries: average
Hash & Rice: incredible.  I don't personally like hash because of the texture and appearance, but my husband loves it.  I ate more than a few bites.
Ambiance: we sat in the front near the cashier; lots of literature about the "true" southern heritage.  If I hadn't googled the owner and his beliefs, I might go back.  That said, it was the best hash I ever had.

We made a pit-stop here because it was right off I-95, and we wanted BBQ.  My friend is allergic to shellfish (iodine in the sauces), so she had banana pudding, mac & cheese (not bad) and onion rings (which were cold).  I had a medium-sized pulled pork BBQ sandwich and hushpuppies (which were also cold and doughy-undercooked, maybe?).  I was unsure what I was in for with a mustard-based sauce (it's pretty much yellow), but it didn't taste as mustardy as I thought it would.  If I were hungry and saw Maurice's, I'd stop again, but wouldn't go out of my way for it.  The staff was really friendly though.
