A great hotel to stay in. It was absolutely spotless, and the bed was the most comfortable I've ever stayed in hotel-wise. It even rivals my very-spendy bed at home! This is very important to me, and worth a lot of stars.
The room otherwise is very standard hotel fare - not too big, but not a closet either. No view from our room (which would be true of many in the hotel) - it overlooked the parking lot. Fairly unremarkable bathroom, although the water pressure was fine and the shower never ran cold. Small fridge in the room, but no microwave.
The room was cleaned every day (I think they have some policy of checking the room regardless of you putting the privacy thing), and all of the staff I spoke with at the desk were super friendly in a genuine way. It's a short walk to the beach (a couple minutes), and it's a beautiful beach indeed. No waves when I was there (in May), had to drive to a beach north of Kihei, about 20 minute drive away.
The pool was closed the entire time I was there (they said we could use some pool over at another complex, but it was completely crowded) - this was a bit of a drag when we just wanted to hang around a pool after dark. The restaurant at the hotel wasn't great. The workout room was pretty good (6 cardio machines and weights), but was actually very crowded when we went.
Would certainly stay here again, but would walk or drive to central Kihei to eat.

Pro:
We ended up here after we found out our previously booked hotel did not have a/c. We called and were able to get in same day. The rooms are good sized and there are free large capacity washer and dryers in the facility. Great location directly across the street from the beach.
Con:
Parking can be a problem if you have a really late check-in. Our bathroom was a wheelchair bathroom and smelled really bad. I didn't complain because I was happy to have a/c but if this was my first choice I would have requested another room.
Great hotel on my favorite island. Rooms are nice. Staff are OK. No views. But the rooms stay cold on a hot HI day!
There is a great beach right in front (you have to go left or right to get to it, tho). Out and left is the ABC store, which I always hit. There are also numerous eateries that way. Out and right is more of a walk to eateries and a grocery store.
You can rent a bike and the pool is nice. I never really eat here, altho I have had happy hour apps once, and they were tasty, but the food, as are most things on the island, was a bit pricey.
I'm usually only here one or two nights at a time, and this hotel is just fine for that!
Stayed for a week in October 2009. This place is wonderful. The front desk staff were great and upgraded us to a mini suite which made it that much better. Like others have said, the bed is extremely comfortable. The room was comfortable and roomy. The balcony was nice and the air conditioning worked great. Always felt like our belongings were safe left behind in the room. Very convenient to everything in Kihei, walking distance to ABC store for cold drinks and snacks, The beach is right across the street. We did not eat at Spices but the $5 breakfast looked like a good deal. I would absolutely come back to Maui Coast on all return trips to Maui.
3.5 stars rounded up.
Ok, here's the deal with the Maui Coast. For being so remarkably close to the ocean, you won't have a beach view so put that out of your mind right now. You're wedged between some other resorts, all of which probably have full kitchens. You won't have one here, so you're eating out. Unless you're an expert microwave cook.
I found some pictures of the rooms before they renovated - pretty hilarious and sad. The renovated rooms are more modern, have flat panels tvs, modern veneer wood furniture and very comfortable beds (huge points on that). We had a one bedroom suite, apparently the biggest layout in the hotel, and it felt smaller than the advertised ~550 sq ft. But we had a separate living room, two tvs, two patios (no smoking on either) and one bathroom with a large tub. It was fine for five nights - any longer and my non-claustrophobia would have kicked in.
$9.95/day for internet, or $41 for five days. $2 for 20oz of water on the floor, but $1.69 for a liter in the gift shop. They also charge a very reasonable $13 for a 12-pack of beer, which is handy.
The pool was closed for resurfacing, but the pool bar was open. Too bad it sucked. If you go, only go during happy hour. We didn't try Spices Restaurant, but from the reviews here, looks like we didn't miss much.
There are some deals on this hotel right now, which makes it a good choice. You certainly won't have the lush surroundings of some of the Wailea resorts, but you'll have a comfortable bed to sleep in, you're walking distance from Cafe O'Lei, the ABC Store, the Moose, Kihei Caffe and the Kihei Marketplace. So you could do a lot worse. If I returned to Maui on a budget, I'd probably look into the Maui Coast again. Mahalo.

Stayed here the past couple of days for work and I must say that I am extremely impressed with their hotel rooms after they did the renovations on their rooms this year. It was nice walking into a room where all you could smell was fresh wood (new furniture) and new carpet. I always tend to take a good whiff anytime I open a hotel room door to a new place, and this time I was very impressed.
They renovated their bathrooms with new fixtures and counter tops, replaced their beds with very comfortable new pillow top mattresses (the best!) and bedding (along with new large pillows!). It also looks like they put in a new table and chairs along with a large flat screen tv.
Definitely nice to come home to after a long day out on the road. They are currently still renovating their pool area and I look forward to checking that out as well the next time I'm in town.

Not a bad place to rest and sleep.
My wife and I stayed 6 nights here last October 2007. The hotel was decent enough. We spent most of our time out exploring the island. I like that it is within walking distance to a nice beach and good shaved ice. We never had any problems during our stay. I would have liked a better view from our room then the parking lot, but like I said earlier, we did not spend time in our room enough for it to be a problem.
Likes:
-Rates were OK
-Close to everything. (beaches, restaurants, activities)
Dislikes:
-View from room
-Parking late at night. (crowded)
Really loved our stay here. Not the fanciest hotel ever but really decent, relatively affordable and clean rooms. Nice hotel pool and 2 hot tubs right next to the outside bar. Great customer service. Beach towel service. Less than 5 minute walk to Kamaole Beach Park I. Other nice services like shuttle to airport, and internet in the lobby. We felt totally taken care of during our stay. We loved staying at this location in Kihei. It's touristy to be sure, but lots of locals and local flavor as well. Avoid Spices.
They are currently doing renovations (I think through June 2009). This did not bother us as we never hung out in our room during the daytime. But... you have been warned.
I don't know what this place was like before the renovations, but they did a great job. This place was lovely. There's not much within walking distance (like most of Maui, I think), but we were right across the street from a great beach. Our room was spacious and clean, with a spare, modern decor. The mattress and pillows were the most comfortable I think I have ever slept on--before we checked out I meant to ask what brand of mattress and pillow-top they were, but sadly, I forgot. (If anyone knows, maybe you can contact me somehow, or at least post the information.) And I LOVED the decorations in the lobby: very island-colonial.
No, we didn't have an ocean view, but we had a palm tree underneath our window, which housed lots of lizards, so my husband and I had a few enjoyable mornings sitting on the balcony with our breakfasts, counting the lizards.
I would skip the restaurant, Spices. We ate there for breakfast and I wasn't impressed with the service (our waitress spent most of her time talking to the table next to us about her recent relocation to Maui--I wanted my coffee refilled!), and the food was fine but overpriced. Try one of the local restaurants down the street instead.
I'm not sure why I hesitate to give this five stars--maybe because the elevator wasn't very conveniently located to our room, or because there weren't very many trees in the parking lot and our car heated up like an oven in the hot sun. But I would not hesitate to stay here again. It's a good area, and a great hotel.
This hotel was great. Definitely alotta bang for the buck. We stayed for one week and it was excellent. The hotel grounds are nice and clean. It's within walking distance from a beach and local shops. Theres an outside bar and pool area with live music every night. We got a one bedroom suite and it was clean and spacious. I had asked for a room facing the ocean but didn't get it. Oh well. There is a snack shop in the lobby. Too bad I didn't find out until the last day. I think this is a great hotel. If it were in the Lahaina area, it'd probably cost twice as much. I recommend it to everyone.
A wonderful revelation in Kihei Town.
I was staying in Kihei over the 4th of July weekend to attend a friend's wedding in Kahului. I had the standard room with king size bed. It had everything that I needed. A bed to sleep in, a small fridge to store drinks and food, clean bathroom and shower, and an AC unit to keep the room cool after returning from my trips. The view wasn't much (the parking lot and adjacent building) but that's what motivates you to leave the room and enjoy what the island has to offer.
What complimentary services the Maui Coast offers:
-Beach towels (sign them out and bring them back)
-Hotel Shuttle Service within the Kihei and Wailea areas.
-Fitness Center located above the Spices Restaurant in front of the hotel.
-Tennis courts (keys and equipment rentals available).
-Washers and dryers
-Wall safe in your room to store your valuables.
-Two computers with internet access across from the elevators (recommended time limit 15 minutes)
Other services available:
-Spices Restaurant/Tradewinds Poolside Cafe
-Activities & Car Rental
-Nani Gift Shop (though if you'd like, you could walk a block away from the hotel to the ABC store and get some things for cheaper)
-Dry cleaning
-Pool and hot tubs
The best thing is literally the close proximity to the beach. I would wake up at the butt-crack of dawn each morning of my stay, sign out a couple beach towels, walk across the street to the beach, swim in the cool, clear Maui ocean seawater and realize that I was definitely not in California.

I wish I could give 3.5 stars. The rooms are clean, and the staff are competent. The pool is just OK. Looking out at parked cars isn't my idea of a vacation pool. But the beach is right across the street.
Free internet on the hotel's computers next to the elevator. There are two PCs, and they ask that you limit your time on them.
They'll also loan you bicycles if you want to ride into Kihei-town, or up to Wailea. I thought that was a nice touch...
Spices restaurant was good for breakfast.
The room rates were reasonable, compared to the resorts in the area... but believe me, this is not a resort by any means.
If you want your "dream Maui vacation" don't stay here.
But if you want to save money, and be in a good area with very clean rooms, this is the place for you.

I found the hotel room to be very clean and the bathroom to be spacious as well as clean. The location is nice (on the mauka side of S. Kihei Road), and it provides easy access to Lahaina and Kahului. Great experience overall!
Maui Coast was actually a lot nicer than I thought it was going to be. I chose this hotel mainly because of the jacuzzi whirlpool hot tub bath in each room! That sounded like a nice touch to a place to stay during your honeymoon....and it sure was! It was so relaxing to lay in there every night with the jets on. They also had a bottle of champagne chilled in our room upon arrival which was very generous of them. We got the biggest suite they had so it was really roomy and nice. Although the view was only of the parking lot, it was a really nice place to stay. It was right across the street from the beach and really close to everything if we had to walk.
