Coincidentally, it is 364 days since my first review of Mattress World. I drive/walk/run by the store several times a week and always think, "I need to update."
We've had out mattress/topper/mattress cover/bed combo for 18 months. We still love it. It may be a bit odd to update a review when we haven't stepped foot back in the store since buying that stuff, but when it comes to a mattress... that means it's working.1 Previous Review: Show all »

What a shame.
I ordered a bedroom set from them...with the hopes of ordering more furniture in the future since I'm finishing up the remodel on my condo.
The bedroom set took a few extra weeks to come than originally quoted. I had asked to make sure the delivery company spoke english...Mr Bob Davis assured me that they did.
Apparently, they had been calling me...the only message I'd received was in Spanish. Then someone even called me from the phone number that Mr Davis said was the delivery company, and the gentleman did NOT speak english at all.
Went back & forth with Mr Davis who came a hair shy of calling me a liar - he contended that not only do the people at the delivery company speak perfect english, but they left several messages for me...and they had never spoken to me.
So, perhaps my caller ID is incorrect?
Highly unlikely.
I went from rather put out having to find an alternate delivery service, to being basically irate at Mr Davis' insistences. It's a shame - I was looking forward to working with them. Also, I prefer to work with local small biz rather than large chains. This is just sad & pathetic.
This review may end up with fewer stars since I have yet to have the furniture set delivered TO my condo. Now I'm pretty much expecting it to be poor quality & damaged, at which point it'll be BBB complaint city.
Not a good sign.1 Previous Review: Show all »

When I purchased my mattress here, I thought it was a pretty good mattress buying experience. My initially quite comfy mattress seemed like a great deal--Ikea price range, but supposedly better made, more durable, longer lasting, blah blah blah. Well, a year and a half later, the mattress this place sold me is not holding up well. It creaks and sags and is generally poorly made and uncomfortable. When I next move, its going to get offloaded on Craigslist and replaced. So in the long run, buying a cheap mattress here works out to be more expensive than an expensive mattress--you are going to have to replace it in less than half the lifespan of a decent mattress.
EDIT: Just to make clear since the proprietor of the business implies that my problem was simply that I'm a cheapskate, the mattress was $379 for a full. I don't think its unreasonable to expect a mattress at that price to hold up for more than 18 months, especially since the price was supposedly a discount off retail.Comment from Bob D. of Mattress World / Al Davis Furniture 7/2/2010

Review from Tamara L.
A few months ago I was in the market for a mattress. After stopping at some of the chain stores around town, I discover Davis Furniture/Mattress. A local, independently owned mattress and (some) furnture store. I stopped by and tested out the mattresses. I spent some time narrowing my choices down and testing out the mattresses. Bob Davis was very helpful and informative and I felt no pressure at all. Their prices are better than any you'll find around and their delivery fee is nominal.
I made my choice and selected my mattress. I chose to pick it up myself the next evening borrowing a van from a friend. My friend wound up running a little late and even though it was past closing, Bob stayed with me in the parking lot (as it was now dark and I was alone) until my friend arrived.
I had such a great experience with Davis that I knew I wanted to purchase my platform bed from them. I'm also a huge fan of supporting local small business so I was happy to purchase from them again. -

You just don't know how much these folks care until they come through when you need them...
Without disclosing too much, I can just tell you that Al Davis rushed a bed to us in 2 hours to spare an elderly relative the shock of seeing the grisly evidence caused by a near-fatal accident that occurred... The new set was delivered at 6:30PM because these are the kindest people ever.
Al Davis has earned our loyalty forever and we will NEVER buy a bed anywhere else. Buying from a family business is always the right thing to do anyway-- but this family is the real deal. -

Great little indy mattress shop. No high-pressure stuff. The friendly staff didn't shadow us around the store. Prices were surprisingly good, and they were able to order a natural latex king mattress for us in a reasonable timeframe. With Costco and the glut of mattress discount outlets, I'm surprised a place like this stays in business.

When choosing a pillow top mattress, I went almost all mattress chain stores in San Dieo. And then, I discovered that prices and products are not so diffrent. Most sales persons tried to sell a mattress by offering free sheets or pillow cases and chasing you around in the store.
This place "Al Davis Furniture Mattress World" does not do that. They don't pressure on you at all, so I was confortable to come back there a few times and purchased the right one. They let you feel free to try as many mattresses as you want and very helpful when I asked about mattresses.
Also, I discovered that their mattresses are cheaper than than the other chain stores. Instead, they do not offer any free sheets or free shipping that are actually not necessary when getting more discounts. -

I was specifically looking for a Simmons Beautyrest Classic pillowtop mattress that was similar to the one I left behind in New York.
Here were the prices of similar mattresses at the following stores (for a full-size, without the boxpring):
Sleep Train: $1025 (includes delivery)
Real Deal: $647(no delivery)
Mattress World: $500 (no delivery)
Who would you choose? (Plus they're independently owned! Actually BIG plus!) -

After 2 weeks of mattress research , I decided on a Simmons Beautyrest Classic Plush Firm w/ Eurotop. I shopped around and this place had a better than fair price but they were willing to match the "No sales tax" price of another store so really, I got exactly what I wanted delivered on the SAME DAY! I walked out of the store at 430pm and by 7pm, I had my new mattress set up and ready to go. That was last night. I slept through the whole night and woke up happy on my new mattress.

Bob Davis helped me and my friend find the mattresses that we were looking for. We just moved from OH and were unfamiliar with the area. We went to countless other mattress stores that did not compare to the price and QUALITY of Davis Mattress World.
The experience was about as easy as it could get. They are very knowledgeable about the product and did not make you feel like you had to buy right away. YOU WILL FIND THE BEST MATTRESS/PRICE COMBINATION HERE! -

If you've shopped for mattresses before, you probably know that it can be one of the most unpleasant things to shop for - phoney / pushy salespeople, meaningless "sales" and difficulty comparison shopping. Forget all that and just shop here. They've got a full range of mattresses from lower-end to high-end and even organic, and Bob will help you understand the options in a low-key, no pressure manner. Also, their prices seem very good compared to other stores. Finally a pleasant mattress buying experience!

Like others before me have said, they are a low-pressure sales-type place. After being hounded at the typical mattress places, this was such a wonderful experience. They were very knowledgable about their products. We loved how they would ask if we needed assistance, answer any questions we had, and then let us alone to try out the different mattresses and talk between ourselves which ones we liked and didn't like. Then they would come back and ask if we had any more questions. They were happy to allow us to move toppers and pillows around as we pleased. Their prices are very reasonable and their selection of latex mattresses was the best we've seen. We even ordered our bed from them. We are very happy with them and especially happy to be able to spend at a local, small store instead of a big chain store.
