The only way to review this establishment is to review it in German...
Ok so you don't read German..too bad. Go and see for yourself what all the fuss is about. You will NOT be disappointed.
The best sandwiches in North OC IMO. I'm willing to bet my left toe that you won't be able to find another sandwich that taste better and is as inexpensive as Mattern. The sandwiches here are made fresh from the meat they make. They are dirt cheap too. A full sandwich will cost from $4.25-$4.95 and a half sandwich will cost from $2.50-$2.70. Note: Not all sandwiches are available in a half size and only offered as a full.
Once you open the door, grab a number. The wait can be quite long here because people love this place. So the very first thing I did upon walking in was went to the right and picked a number. There were about 8 people ahead of me and it took about 15 minutes before my number was called. During my wait, I went over to the cooler to check out the beers. I saw they have Spaten Optimator and I grabbed it. I fell in love with this beer when I had it at Wurstküche in DTLA. I then sat down at the table and waited for my turn. There are two rows of tables and about 10 chairs.
When my number was up, the friendly lady somehow knew I was here for sandwiches. All the regulars were buying deli meat. Since I didn't know the next time I was going to be in the area, I decided to try out 3 different sandwiches. I ordered a brat (only comes in full), a smoked pork chop (only comes in full) and a 1/2 poor boy. She asked me if I wanted anything else and I showed her my beer. She showed me the bottle opener and asked me to take a seat and she will bring it out.
Several minutes later, three plates were in front of me. The first sandwich I tried was the brat with mustard on a French roll. ($4.25) This was pretty good but the least favorite of the sandwiches. Since they cut this sandwich in half, I only ate half. The next sandwich I tried was the smoked pork chop with everything on rye. ($4.90) This was a very tasty and juicy sandwich. I found it interesting that they even lay the pork chop bone on the plate. I guess it is to show you this is a chop and not some processed meat. This sandwich was also cut in half and I only ate half. Then it was time for the Poor boy with everything on a French roll. ($2.70) This was my favorite. The cold cuts in this sandwich taste light and healthy. The German salami did not have that greasy feeling to it. This sandwich went down very smoothly.
And not to forget this meal was washed down by a bottle of Spaten Optimator (7.2%) for $3.09. I didn't want to stuff myself too much, so I decided the other two halves of my sandwiches, would be for dinner. I took my plate up to the register, had them wrap up my leftovers and paid the same friendly lady that took my order. She told me to come back again Tuesday-Saturday and try another sandwich. They are closed Sunday-Monday. I don't come up to Orange often, but for a Mattern sandwich, I will make the trip.
I've been itching to try this b/c it kept showing up on Yelp! as a great great rating... My wife used to go here all the time and raved about it, but for whatever reason we never went... So anyway, a few of the boys from the office and I rolled on down and gave it a lunch time go.
Man oh man, this placed lived up to expectations and then some... I had half of a German Salami sandwich and half of a toasted ruben... both were amazing, but the toasted ruben is the way to go. To top it all off, my total bill, with a Diet Coke came to $5.70 after Tax and CRV?
five stars. believe it.
Just got back from a food coma-inducing 4+ hours at Mattern today. O. M. G.
Try this equation on for size
smoked pork chop sandwich on rye
roast beef sandwich on rye with muenster cheese
turkey and liverwurst sandwich on rye with smoked gouda cheese
hot pastrami on rye with swiss cheese
two side orders of warm German potato salad
six beers
cherry strudel
= less than $50
stick a fork in me, I'm done.*
* and by 'I' I of course mean myself, my bro, and BB#1, Bonofide. No I did not just eat $50 worth of Mattern deli food and beer by myself. Is that a challenge?

This place is awesome! I am new to yelp! but my associates use it religiously and I now understand the beauty of it! My coworker invited me to try this place he found on yelp! and it was amazing. The prices were VERY affordable and the sandwiches were amazing. I had the reuben and the german salami sandwiches.
I have been eating reubens for years and I must say this has my vote for the best out there. To sum up, if you are a sandwich lover make sure you check out this place. Also, the beer selection looked attractive...they had tons of German beers available...even in mini kegs. I would have tried a couple but I didn't want to come back to work walking sideways.
My total bill was only $6.77...This included a full sandwich, and a soda. I am definitely coming here again.
I just went here for lunch for the 1st time and it was great! I had the Rueben sanwich and german potato salad. I spend a total of $6 for this incredible meal.
It was one of the best if not the best rueben I've had. The outside is very non-descript, you really wouldn't even know it's there. But wow is it worth it.
The also have a large selection of German Beer ( I couldn't indulge at lunch). that I want to try as well.
I don't know about you, but I am a serious sandwich fan. I have gone through phases where I eat a sandwich everyday. They really are pretty close to the perfect food. So many choices and styles. Honestly, only jerks don't enjoy themselves a good sandwich.
This is probably one of the best I've ever had. The bread was soft and chewy and actually tasted good, not just like bread. I had roast beef that also had it's own very beefy flavor. Also, this place is just quaint and old-fashioned. Add a bunch of German girls running around being cute and German and you have my new favorite sammich spot.
They make their own meats that they put through the slicer to put into your sandwich, thus it being soft and juicy! Both their hot and cold sandwiches are amazing. I usually don't like roast beef, but their hot roast beef with sauerkraut is great. The pickles they serve with the sandwiches are great too. A bit sweet and sour but not in any overwhelming way. If you get stumped, ask them, and they'll recommend the type of cheese or whatever to put into your sandwich to make it perfect.
They have a variety of German beers and some American.
They're usually crowded because each staff takes time with you when it's your turn. So go early or avoid lunchtime and weekends.
I come here about once a month. The german salami is the best salami I have ever had - and it is very addicting. The german salami is very, very dry - never had anything like it - I usually cannot eat that much salami because it is greasy. Not here, full corns of pepper and a great, strong dry palate. Awesome. They have a wide variety of rye bread here from Streit Bakery in Downey. People who work here are nice. You can have a beer while you are waiting to order - you might be waiting a while - this place gets packed and is really small. Make sure you grab a number when you walk in.
The reuben sandwich is good and very reasonable. I like the macaroni salad. The brats and knockwurst here are really mild.
Closed on Sundays and Mondays and they close at 5pm on the days they are open. Hard to find - it is next door to Wienerschnitzel and across the street from Moreno's.
I'm not a huge sandwhich person but I was impressed, the meat was really good. Fiance had the rueben which he said was REALLY good and he used to work at Continental Deli back in the day, and I had the poor boy which I thought was good too. Poorboy is a mix of their german meats and salami (yum), I think the salami sandwhich would be good too.
Get your sandwhich toasted and get hot mustard, I think it tasted much better this way. We also bought two sausages so looking forward to eating that too. Didn't get a chance to taste the sides. Place is small and still crowded on a Saturday afternoon at 11:30, crazy.
VERDICT - GOOD SAMMIES AND CHEAP
I'm going to keep this one simple:
Pros: Very FRESH meats & cheeses which equals very yummy sandwiches! Friendly service & family establishment.
So So's: Pasta & potato salad.
Cons: Dining area consists of old, cheap tables and chairs.
Overall, I'd recommend it and would come here again but I think I'll do take-out next time =)
I am writing this in a half vegetative, food coma state.
Admittedly I should not be reviewing Mattern's because I did not go inside. I mean, you should at least experience the whole establishment to give a proper review....right? Eh...I will focus on food today because it was soooooo yummy that I can't wait.
I sent my buddy to grab us some sandwiches for lunch. He suggested this place because he is a BIG fan of meat and heard lore of Mattern's. No on-line menu so I told him to call once he arrived.
Here are the transcriptions of the call:
Him: I'm here, what do you want?
Me: What is there?
Him: Uh, any kinda brat, sausage, sliced meat.....poorboys...dude, it's a F@*king deli.
Me: Alright, alright....do they have turkey?
Him: Yes, regular and smoked.
Me: Awwww sh!t...you know I'm a creature of habit and smoked turkey sounds great. Get it on a roll with ez mayo and mustard, tomatoes, lettuce and provolone. Oh, and get some german tater salad, I heard it's good.
Him: Cool, man.....catch ya in a minute.
*half hour late*
Me: Dude?!?!? Where the F@ck are you? I am starving!
Him: I am paying right now....I know, I know......
Me: Is the line that long? Hurry the hell up!
Him: Be back in a few.
He arrives with a box in his hand containing the savory morsels we are about to treat our tastebuds to. You have read my order from the above transcription. He ordered a poorboy and let them put on the meats. It was a smattering of thin sliced German delites in between spongy, fresh roll.
Now......He pulls out the poorboys, the german tater salad and two Franziskaner beers....my fav German beer. So check it out....I HATE POTATO SALAD!! But I thought that I would give theirs a try (thank you fellow Yelpers)......and....what is this stuff? I couldn't detect any mayo or disgusting egg pieces that make american tater salad so nasty. It was DELICIOUS! They made me a believer. Scant bits of bacon but not overpowering, tinges of vinegar tickle the back of my tongue...chunky but creamy without the cream....mustardy but not too mustardy. Best potato salad I have had....ever and he thought so, too....and we hate tater salad.
The poorboys? Scrumptious!! I don't know...not fancy...just fresh meats, fresh bread...perfect mayo/mustard ratio. They even blended up the mayo/mustard. You know.....lay down the mayo (not too much) lay down the mustard (not too much) and spread it around until it turns pale yellow. Look people...it messes with a sandwich when you don't perform this necessary sandwich building function. You know what I mean?
Nummm Nummm Nummm.......glug glug glug.
Voila! Food Coma!
Thank you Mattern's. We'll be back when we have time to wait in your lines...but we will be back
It's an awesome German deli/store. You can buy straight from the deli case or have them make you a sandwich, which you will have to get in line for, because apparently I'm not the only one who is hip to the fact this place makes the best sandwiches you'll ever eat. Eyes roll back in your head good.
Smells really good in there, but the wait to place an order was ridiculously long. We waited over 30 minutes to place our order! This was on a random Saturday afternoon.
Once we did get the sandwiches they were great. And the service to you table is nice. But this place is more of a deli shop and the 2 or 3 tables they crammed in between the dru goods and the fridges is uncomfortable and crammped. It's great if you want to swing by and take it to go. And even better if you can call your order in ahead of time. Which is what I will do next time I am in the mood for German sandwiches.
They also have a great selection of German beers, deli meats and other grocery products.
Mattern is an nondescript place that is overshadowed by the next door Wienerschnitzel. However, the contrast in quality between these two places are like night and day. The only thing they share in common is the parking lot.
This is the first time I've heard people speak German IRL outside of my high school German class. It was pretty interesting hearing old people here giving their order to the employees in German over the deli counter.
So what's the first thing you should do when you come in here? Admire the meats in the display case? NO! Admire all the different German products they sell here? NO! Gaze at the imported German beer they have here? NO! Look at the crowd of people huddling almost shoulder to shoulder waiting for their turn? NO! What should you do?! Turn right after you enter the store and grab a number from the dispenser.
I tried the poor boy on rye to play it safe and it was great. The girl took my order and a few minutes later it appeared in front of me in all of its glory. The verity of meat just blended together nicely and it was enjoyable to the very last bite. My only regret is that I did not have a beer with it but I had to drive (I'm a super light weight) so I didn't want to risk it.
I found the people here are generally friendly, I talked to this one guy the entire time I was there. He and I were alone but I sat there listening to his interesting stories and conversed with him, good times.
Fail: I drooled over pictures of Mattern's sandwich meats all day at work. I make my way to Orange and what do you know? The damn place isn't open on Monday's! I truly have a case of the Mondays.
Take 2: I decided just to a classic salami sandwich on a French roll . It was delicious. Nothing needed to be added or taken away. Everything in the sandwich complimented each other so well. The bread was good, could have been better. It's nothing to snicker at though. I'll definitely come back just for this sandwich. 4.5 stars baby!
Take 3: Ordered the Rueben and had a side of German potato salad. If you know me, [which all likely hood is no, but we could resolve that problem ;)] I will eat anything I buy.
I COULD NOT FINISH THIS SANDWICH =( I don't know if it was the 20 minute drive home, but the Rueben's bread turned all soggy. The sauerkraut I couldn't stomach. The meat...well I tried just to pull it out to eat it by itself. I couldn't do it. Each bite was torture. The only saving grace of this meal is the German potato salad, which I tried to cover up the taste of the sandwich with.
Despite my take 3 disappointment, I'll still give this place a 4 star for the great salami sandwich and German potato salad. Happy eating.
Went back again today and got the bologna... again! Simply amazing. It was so good that I bought a pound of bologna and the salami to bring home (and eating it right now typing). I don't know what Mattern's put in their meat... it must be love and crack.
Since my first visit, I've turned 4 more people into fans of Mattern's.

Crack between bread. That's what these sandwiches are. I'd like to thank fellow Yelper Michelle for pointing this place out to me. I tried the Poorboy sandwich. It had an assortment of different deli slices ranging from salami to german bologna and possibly Pancetta. It had just the right about of mayo / mustard, and the bread was super soft. Soft slices of Provolone just melt in your mouth too, so when you take a bite your teeth just sink through layers of savory deli meats and cheese in the ultimate foodgasm. You get a choice of french roll or rye and I went with the roll this time.
The pickles that accompanied the sandwich are worth mentioning too! They're not like the normal Vlassic or Claussen pickles we pick up at the store. These are crunchy sweet German-style dills that were a wonderful compliment to the sandwich.
I got my guy a Salami sandwich, and it's chillin' the fridge till he gets off work. Mwuahahaha, it may not last that long.
Of interest to note, as Michelle posted earlier this month, they are closed on Sunday's and Monday's... And are only open 'till 5pm the rest of the week. That's ok though, its a Mom & Pop place and they've been doing this for years. It's more a sausage vendor and German grocer anway, but their sandwiches have definately landed them on the map!!
This is a place that I go to when I am craving a good hearty sandwich. I have been coming here for years and it is always delicious. On my most recent trip I ordered a salami sandwich on rye and my boyfriend ordered a poor boy sandwich. I have to say that I was completely jealous of my boyfriend's order. His sandwich was amazing! There are several types of meats that have a similar texture to bologna, but is obviously far superior to the old Oscar Mayer meat. There was at least five different types of meats and a slice of some white cheese that blended perfectly together (on rye). Don't get me wrong, my salami sandwich was also delicious, but there's something about the poor boy that makes me smile.
I also ordered a side of German potato salad warm. Oh and if you order a sandwich there I definitely recommend that you have them toast the sandwich for you. It brings the sandwich to a whole other level. I also love the fact that they give you a side of pickles. Their pickles are delicious and go so well with the sandwich. This is definitely the place to go for a filling, cheap, and yummy meal!
The Good: I finally went. And I loved it. Right when you enter the deli, it feels you've landed yourself in a small deli in a tiny and friendy European neighborhood, where everyone knows everyone. All German products in here, from their magazines to their wide selection of alcohol. The meat, cheese, etc. are all fresh and the prices are so low! The service is friendly and they do everything well.
The Bad: The sandwiches do take longer than you'd expect, but it's worth it. Also, some of the sandwiches may seem to have a more than desired amount of mayo and mustard.
Try: Salami with provolone on rye bread. The pastrami was also very tasty!
Don't Try: saying anything stupid about Germany's history. Germans are nice and loving people (well everyone is!), so don't mention that past.
Food: 5 stars
Price: 5 starts
Wait: 2 stars
This place is amazing and I would totally say worth the the wait, but Do NOT come if you are in a hurry. They are very slow, and there is usually a lot of people cramped in there. Remember to grab a number once you walk in, and then they will call your number and you can order from either the deli or a table. I would recommend the poor boy or the roast beef. Both are DELICIOUS!! Sandwiches also come with home made pickles (mix between dill and sweet pickle). And range from $4.50 (with out cheese) to $4.90 (with cheese).
Also a small container of a side, either potato salad (German or American style), coleslaw, macaroni salad etc is only $1.80!! And it is delicious. A can of soda is only $0.80. German style is delicious, and buttery and served warm. The coleslaw is also great it is not all mayonnaise-ey and sugary like the normal American style.
This place also has a little grocery area that is so sweet and quaint. It contains cute little German and European treats. Also this place has mortadella!!! My favorite Italian meat ever! I didn't even know they have the meat in the states, but it is a great treat!!!
I love this place for its prices and for the great food. But be aware of long lines, crazy Euro-trash trying to run you over. They are feisty!
How is it I waited so long to try Mattern's?
We didn't even wait around for their awesome sandwiches. We just ordered a little of a lot from the deli case and took it home to gorge on in private.
And what a deli case! I'm not sure if I experienced tears or eye-drool. The sausages, roast beef, BACON!!!!!!, bologna, multi-wursts, cheeses, stuff I have no idea what it was....
And while you're waiting for your number to be called.....
The breads, rolls, jams, mustards, beers, spices, stuff I have no idea what it was, dried pastas and spatzles, chocolate, candies, Oh My!
How do you say 'overload' in German?
I thought we were going a little crazy and buying WAY too much stuff (which we did) and I was terrified of the total bill- but it was super reasonable. I was expecting around $60- it was only $38. Cool!
They have all kinds of packages of sauce mixes and stuff- but most of the 'just add' ingredients are in German. They have put some with add-on labels in English so you can figure out what to do with them. Next time I'm going to buy a few... I'll let you know!
Just wanted to again proclaim my love for Mattern's.
Protip: Tanya has a secret menu. One sandwich I will mention is the "Rich Boy", named after my friend Rich. More are available, all are amazing.

Food was good, but we were there on a Saturday at lunch and the wait was unacceptable. Probably waited almost an hour for 2 sandwiches. Don't go at prime time!
Good lord, that's tasty!
I had a corned beef on rye with provolone heated up, and German potato salad heated up.
It may be the best sandwich meal I have ever had.
That's why their slogan is:
"Sandwiches so good, they will make you poop your pants"
The line today was horrible, however, arrived at 11:00AM and got my sandwich at 11:40, no lie, I really waited 40 minutes for a sandwich. It was frustrating and for a first time visit it was chaotic, but it was worth it :)
One of the amazing places in this great city of ours. Cheap with a great staff, excellent selection of even better beers, and a variety of things that make you smile in a double bock-inspired grin.
What more can you ask for? More German potato salad probably.
Amazing sandwiches. If you're going here for lunch during the week give yourself some time as the line gets pretty long and there usually only 3 to 4 people working behind the counter. Grab a number. Also, don't risk it (for those of you familiar with the "don't risk it" signs in the store you'll know what i'm talking about)- it's basically a sign that says don't steal... however, anyone going out of their way to come and steal a loaf of bread from a german deli has got to be out of their mind. Freshest and most authentic ingredients. I recommend the poorboy sandwich on french bread. Staff is usually pretty friendly unless you are cutting in line, talking too loud, or taking forever to decide what you want (sort of reminds me of Soup Natzi from Seinfeld)- same setup and all!
This is also a great place to by some deli meats, sausages, and breads (As well as other authentic german/european meats and condiments).
Soooo good.
First thing: when you walk in, turn to your right and grab a number. Chances are there's gonna be a wait, because this place is that good.
There's not a whole lot of room to eat inside, so it's not the best place for groups, or even for a couple of people if you get there around lunch time.
I've been there a few times, and it's been consistently good everytime. I went with a group during off-hours once, everyone got something different (and there were some picky eaters in the group), but there were no complaints from anyone. Some of the hot sandwiches do take a bit of time to prepare, but it really is worth the wait in the end. They homemake their pickles, and they're awesome.
The Ruben is kind of amazing. Wash it down with some imported beer. Mmm. They have a cooler stocked with soda, water, and a ton of different German beer (bottle opener is right by the ticker/number machine). I like to try new things, mostly by trial and error, so I was pretty stoked about the variety.
It's also a great place to pick up meats (one of the only places in OC that I've found pretty fresh linguica! (Portuguese sausage)), and other German imports.
Definitely take the time to visit this spot!
If Mattern were a woman, it would be the sort of woman that I immediately wanted to marry, settle down with, and grow old together.
Everything is fantastic. The staff, their deli meats and sausages, their bread, their self-serve beer coolers, even the line to wait in, all of it is perfect.
Since it is also a "Sausage Factory", many of their meats are made by Mattern, so it's about as good as it could possibly get. Whats even better is that nothing is expensive. A large import beer, and a beautiful sandwich will set you back 8 bucks. That's less than a "meal deal" at a chain sandwich shop. I will eat here weekly, for the rest of my life, or until I move somewhere else, at which point this will be what I look forward to when I come back to visit.
I really don't think this place needs any more reviews for you to see that it is awesome and well worth a visit.
The staff is super friendly. They have a huge selection of super fresh meats And a decent selection of beers to go with your Beerwurst.
If you plan on going for lunch: I would recommend calling in your order 10-15 minutes before you plan on arriving.
I recommend the German salami or Cervelat .
Ahhh I love this place. Fortunately, they are right down the street from my office so I get to enjoy this place on a weekly basis.
Lets start with what makes a great deli: awesome food, cheap prices, and friendly staff. This place has it all. The staff is always nice and upbeat, the food is top notch, and it's so inexpensive.
The pastrami sandwich here is the best!
Word to the wise: other people have caught on to how awesome this place is so if you're going for lunch between 12-1pm, call in the order and then pick it up to save about 15-20 min of waiting (even then it's worth the wait).
They are also closed on Mondays so don't go there on that day!
This is more of a news update, then a review. But, since many you are fans of Mattern..You should know that, the deli supplies nearly every sausage, brat at the Orange International Street Fair, held every Labor Day weekend in Old Towne Orange. The event will be held this weekend (Fri-Sun). Irish Street bangers, St. John's brats, and polish sausages on Greek street are all courtesy of Mattern.
Sweet Jesus, this place serves up a damn tasty sandwich.
After reading all the raves I had to come here. It really is an inconspicuous and authentic German deli ironically placed next to a Weinershnitzel.
Sometimes simple really is best. I ordered the bratwurst sandwich on a french roll and also had a side of German potato salad.
The bratwurst was flavorful and juicy, the bread was fluffy and moist, the sauerkraut had the perfect texture and the mustard was not overpowering. The pickles were delicious as well but personally I would have preferred them to be less sweet.
If you've never had German potato salad it's almost like having extra, extra, chunky mashed potatoes. I could taste the butter, bacon, onion and splash of vinegar. It's served hot and isn't drowning in mayonnaise like American potato salad.
As all the reviews say, take a number as soon as you walk in. I thought I was lucky when I didn't see many cars in the parking lot but when I walked in it was like a madhouse, thirty minutes before closing. Make sure you are loud when your number is called or you will be quickly passed as my bf and I experienced. I found it kind of amusing when the counter lady yelled "Speak up!" in response, lol.
I felt a little intimidated at first because I was walking into a German deli with predominately German customers, who speak German. (Trust me people, you know what I'm talking about if you've ever been to a Korean BBQ).
However, the staff and owners are super friendly. You could tell there were so many regulars there from the friendly atmosphere. I recommend Mattern's to anyone who appreciates an excellent sandwich and quality ingredients. Prices are very fair too. I'm a fan, it is totally worth the wait and the drive out.
I went here the other weekend, cause I saw the good reviews on Yelp and realized it was right around the corner from my boyfriend's house! We decided to walk there and it was really hot out, but totally worth it. We were really confused at first... didn't really know where the line was... forgot about the taking a number... but we finally ordered our sandwiches and they were delicious! We both got poor boy sandwiches, cause of reviews on here and even though I'm not much of a bologna fan, it was so tasty! The sandwiches are big too. We couldn't finish them and the sweet German lady actually doggie bagged our leftovers for us! Separately wrapped the pickle too! The gentleman next to us, who was a regular customer, was raving about the Reuben sandwich. When his came out I couldn't help but be jealous. Definitely, trying it next time.
Ah Yes, the Mattern Sausage & Meats!
This place is so kick ass. I may not be German, not even a little, but I do enjoy everything that they have in this wonderful little slice of cold cut heaven. The sandwiches are mouthwateringly good. I used to get sandwiches almost every week from here and for the life of me I cannot recall the reason why I stopped doing such a wonderful thing. There may be lines, so beware, but the food is worth the wait.
Part of the charm of this place is that it's still small and only a few people know about it, well-it used to be a hidden jewel, and the employees are always helpful and friendly even though they are teenagers! Amazing, I know! I've been coming here since I was eight with my family and I so glad that this place is still around. Where else would I get such delicious bratwurst and cheese, oh the cheese...I shall have heavenly dreams tonight!

Bratwurst Sandwich - Soft, fatty, and flavorful. The bread was just a plain French roll. Note, you'll be hard pressed to find an equal in providing German meats anywhere else.
Pastrami Ruben - Sharp pastrami taste for the meat. Sauerkraut was mild in sourness which made for a good balance. As a warning, this is a very heavy sandwich.
First of all I am there favorite customer so that alone is enough. This place is obviously good so I will leave it at that. Here's the real treat (if you can find it); you can get a sandwich, a large beer, and a shot, all for under 10 dollars. The only obstacle is finding out where the liquor is.
P.S. All the women working here are bangin.
I'll admit that I was skeptical that any place can get so many 5-star ratings... but it also made me curious, so I stopped by and ordered a bratwurst sandwich (with lettuce and mayo on a roll) for lunch.
Oh my... I live 10 minutes from this place, why didn't I know it existed before! The sandwich (really, the brat) was delicious. The deli itself looked fun and quaint, with a cold case full of tasty cold cuts and sausages. The staff is super nice... I had wanted to pay for my sandwich when I ordered it, but the nice lady told me to go ahead and sit down. She brought my sandwich out to me, and when I asked she said I could just pay afterwards. I love it! But my cynical side hopes that no one has taken advantage of this and just walked out the door.
And I don't know why anyone is complaining about the price... unless you LOVE 99c cheeseburgers from McD's, a sandwich for under $5 is very reasonable. I also wonder if those people in the Weinerschnitzle just outside know what they're missing.
Also notable is a pretty varied selection of German beers.
I'm coming back, definitely!
Delish! I got the bratwurst sandwich and my bf got the polish sausage sandwich.
They both came on a french roll (you can also get rye bread) with sauerkraut and mustard, plus half a pickle on the side. The pickle was a little sweet and not really my taste, but the sandwich was DIVINE. The bratwurst was juicy, plump and had a hearty meaty flavor to it and the mustard was a great compliment. I'm hoping that next time, I can ask them to toast the bread, although it was a minor thing and I wouldn't hold it against them if they couldn't.
The polish sausage had a stronger flavor, but I really enjoyed it, maybe even more than the bratwurst.
We also got a side of german potato salad, which was really good. It was chunky and had some stuff mixed in with it including what I think was mustard because it was slightly yellow tinted.
My gripe with the food (and the reason for four stars instead of five) was that we ordered the potato salad hot, but all she did was microwave it for a few seconds. The middle was still cold so we had to mix it up for some consistency. There was nothing wrong with the flavor, but I kinda wish that she had at least stirred it once and popped it back in the microwave for a few more seconds or something.
The store itself is really cute, you grab a number and there is a huge display of meat plus a little grocery area with different European snacks and things.
I was a little confused when we first came in, because I didn't know how to order, but all you have to do is order your sandwich and sit down. They'll bring the food out to you and you pay afterward (talk about trust).
Mattern is definitely my choice for German sausages.
The polish sausage sandwich here is so incredible that that red-roofed hotdog place next door should be ashamed to keep theirs on the menu. As everyone else has said, the restaurant can be cramped and the service slow, but Quality. Takes. Time. I'm happy to wait because I know it's completely worth it. Plan ahead, take a number, and enjoy your meal.
