Matt & Tony's summary sandwiches are the best things in the world
I've been going to Matt Tony's for 35 years since they're not like all other submarine sandwiches a lot of people like the soft rolled sandwiches
but Matt Tony's you have hard or soft rolls all the sandwiches are delicious my favorite one is a ham and cheese with onions and pickles they put huge scoops of pickles and onions and tomatoes if you'd like
Subway Quiznos there's no competition for Philly cheesesteak that Matt Tony's is to die for if you ever get a chance to try them out you love it

OK, so we just came back from Matt & Tony's and well - it wasn't all that.  In fact... it wasn't anything at all.  I had read all the reviews and even with the not so stellar reviews - I was excited to try.

1 - I love finding great local little hole in the wall eats (especially in valley)
2 - I work in San Fernando where the food options are pretty much fast food joints and limiting
3 - I am a huge sandwich fan :)

We arrived at 12 noon expecting a lunch crowd.  We were the only ones there - that's fine.

The place is not that impressive and there is parking in the rear (8-10 spaces) which is more than some people made it seem.

We were NOT greeted.  And by the looks of the place, sticky looking, ripped checkered table cloths and a practically bare chip rack and of course, the very sad looking meat case (with really nothing in it at all - it didn't look like the usual meat cases you see at sandwich shops/delis)... if all these things weren't enough to say, turn around and go next door to Del Taco.  But of course not.  I was determined to find the next great sandwich shop in the valley!!!

I ordered the small Italian on hard roll (per the guy behind the counter  recommendation) and my husband got the large philly (also per his recommendation since we did ask the question as to what was good).  We both ordered it straight from the menu and as-is.  To me that is the best way to try how a place makes something.  Find out how they do it... and then start adding your special requests and touches to it.

The sandwiches came with diced onions, tomatoes and pickles - like everyone said.  They "looked good" but within the first bite... eeeh...no so much.

It was not awful or bad... but it wasn't good so that I was falling out of my seat or planning my next visit... it was sort of plain and dull - even with all the veggies.  And the meat was sort of cut too thick (for me).  My husband's philly was OK... but it too was also flavorless.

In other words, if I never went back, I would not be too upset.

And in their defense, while we were eating, the ladies replenished the chip rack so it was fully stocked by the time we left.

If it helps anyone... I am a HUGE fan of Bay Cities (Santa Monica).  I go to town on the Godmother - fully loaded, extra spicy!!!  And I also like Giuliano's (Torrance) in a different capacity because they also have a fresh bakery.  But both of those places are way too far for a valley girl to trek on a regular basis.

I sitll have to try DeFrankos (can't wait) but in the meanwhile I'll stick to the sandwiches at Italia Bakery & Deli (on Balboa in Granada Hills).  Its a few more exits over but the sandwiches are decent.  If only they were not so pricey and completely disorganized (even if you order a sandwich over the phone, you still have to take a # when you get there and wait).  It sort of defeats the whole point for calling in.  BTW Italia has awesome garlic bread and a huge selection of frozen take home foods that are pretty tasty (but pricey).

I totally drool for the pepper steak sandwich!!! It is just so darn good. They have a small for a single serving and a large sandwich if you'd like to split it. The cold sandwiches are fine although I am not big on cold sandwiches at all. They only serve hot and cold sandwiches with chips and a drink. All the generations in my family love the place. It's been around since my mom was a little girl and I remember my grandma taking me many times when I was just a girl. There is no air conditioner so in the summer it gets hot... a good idea would be to take it on a hard roll to go. Very filling (for a girl who eats a lot) if you get a small or split a large. Small kids can eat from Del Taco right next door which is also convenient.

I didnt like this place at all. I dont mind the small hole in the wall ambiance. I actually search for spots like this. I ordered the chicken philly. Chicken had no flavor at all. I really wanted to like this place but man you can get a better sandwich at Great steak n Fries at the mall or Quiznos. I wont be back.

Someone needs to map out all the old school sub shops in LA, this place would be up on the map. Lots of meat, seasoned pickles, tomatoes and onions on a soft or hard roll. They do have limited parking, limited seating and pretty heavy lunch crowd and are a bit expensive $7 for a sub. But the taste is there. Amen to that.

Matt & Tony's was my first job when I was 15 and while the job totally blew, the food was amazing. I really want to give them more stars because the food is so good, but since they've switched owners the service has gone incredibly downhill and I am not sure that I can patronize this establishment anymore after the incident I had tonight.

This is the 2nd Friday in a row that they've closed early because they've run out of bread early. You'd think after last Friday they'd order extra. I could've let that go, however the attitude I received when I walked into the "closed" shop was unbelievable. The door was open and there were people eating in there. I didn't enter on the side with the sign, so I didn't see the closed sign was up. Laura, the owner, spat at me that they were closed. I told her that I was sorry, I thought they closed at 8. She said that they had run out of bread in a very nasty tone. I said they ran out last week and walked out. I could've done without the attitude. I would have been fired if I spoke to customers that way when I worked there.

This really is a little hole in the wall, cramped into a tiny suite in a tiny building shoved in between the Del Taco on the one corner, and the 118 FWY on-ramp on the other.  There's limited parking, and even more limited seating (see the photos I'll upload).

I'm on a sort of local restaurant "bucket list," figuring I'm getting old enough, and sick enough of living in the Valley that I might as well try all these little hole in the walls I've been driving by for 10-30 years and see how good they are before I get the heck out of Dodge.  Part of my philosophy is that if someplace stays in business that long, thru good times and bad, they must be pretty good.

I was a bit disappointed in Matt & Tony's.  The food was okay, no better than Subway, really, and much more expensive.  I expected more considering the other reviews here.  The sandwich (small) was fairly large, but it's mostly bread and way too much of the pickles and onions topping that seems to be all the rave for this place and De Franko's.  There was a fair amount of meat and cheese my Italian Cold Cuts sandwich, but nothing extraordinary, and ordering double meat at Subway would have provided a considerably greater amount of the same quality meat for the less money.  The 6" sub (see picture) and "large" size coke cost me $11.15.  This seems a bit steep for lunch for a sandwich in this part of town.

Amusingly, I guess I didn't really expect to see "Matt" or "Tony" behind the counter, they're probably long retired, if not dead, but it was amusing to see three Latinas working the shop, they look like they're probably three generations of ladies from the same family, the youngest behind the counter being about 12 years old or so.

I noticed three postal employees coming out of the place as I walked in, but I'm not sure if its because the food is that great, or because it's a block away from a major post office in the area.

That about wraps up my review of this place, I won't put it on the "cancel" list, but I won't be going out of my way to eat here again, either.  Maybe I'll give them one more shot with something like a pastrami or steak sandwich.  One disappointing thing is to read all the reviews comparing this place to DeFranko's.  DeFranko's is another one on my need to try places, but if the two places are pretty much the same thing, I'm thinking DeFranko's won't get any of my francs any time soon.

Now this is a real sub sandwich shop, not like that crap hole De Frankos.

Lots of meat, seasoned pickles, tomatoes and onions....can't go wrong here.

My only complaint is it is kinda crowded inside during lunch hour but still worth it.........De Frankos could only dream of being half as good as Matt & Tony's

Very similar to DeFranko's Submarines in Van Nuys (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) and almost as good. I didn't really want to compare the two, but they're very similar.

Fresh bread, fresh meat and fresh pickle/tomato/onion topping.

Their hot sandwiches are also awesome, but can take some time to cook.

This place is very small. 3-4 tables inside and that's it. Get it to go and you'll drool all the way back to wherever you're going in anticipation.

Before there was a franchise called Subway, back when McDonald's was an outdoor stand (yeah, I'm in my early 40's), Matt and Tony's was the best thing going on Victory Blvd in North Hollywood. Folks would travel by horse and buggy from all over the orange and lemon orchards of the San Fernando Valley to eat the philly cheese steak and italian combo sandwiches smothered with onions and pickles. No longer in its heyday, yet still properly salted and peppered, Matt and Tony's still exists in Mission Hills as a beacon of hope for those in search of a soft roll stuffed to the brim with lots of Italian hams, or meatballs smothered in provolone. Don't expect anything that is labeled "lite" or "6 grams of fat or less." This place is an original Valley sandwich joint.

i like to be generous with my stars. and there is only one reason this place gets one knocked off.. there is like, NO SEATING anywhere in the restaurant. i think there might be 4 tables. but anyhow.

i'm a sub sandwich junkee. i could eat a sub everyday for the rest of my life and be happy, as long as i go to have different meats each time. hahahaha

i'd gotten gas across the street at chevron several times and finally my friend and i decided to try it. it was heavenly. they have diced tomatoes, onions, and dill pickles as produce, which i love because when i eat a sub i want to taste the meat, not al the veggies they pile on, to me, that's not what a sub is all about. it's about the meat. i got the italian combo with dry and genoa salami, mortadella, and capicola. of course i added provolone cheese. and italian classic isn't complete with out that! my friend had the turkey melt. grilled turkey and onions smothered in provolone cheese. another hit!

this place is your classic sub restaurant. it's great. and i HIGHLY recommend it. anyone that reviews this place after me that says it's no bueno is surely mistaken. take it from the self proclaimed sub junkee.

nestled right between a psychic and a del taco...and right before you hit the 118E..we have matt & tony's.  for all you sub-hoes...this one's for you!

my sis works close by and threw the bug in my ear to hit up this joint.  if you like it stacked, packed, and ready to have a heart-attack, this is the place!  i always order the tuna sammie & have yet to be disappointed.  granted they don't have the seating, but if you're patient enough, after you've ordered your sammie...take that bitch home & go to town on it...

give this place a look-see to fulfill all your sammie needs.
