Oh, Matchbox, how I love and miss thee so!

This is seriously my absolute favorite pizza place ever ever. My favorite two dishes are their balsamic vinaigrette salad and chicken pesto pizza rolls, which I haven't had in way too long! I've tried other dishes, and they're all delicious.

Since this restaurant is located downtown, on the weekends, parking is scarce and the restaurant is definitely packed! The ambiance is great with fire pits and heaters outside and house music. There are a few televisions throughout the patio and bar, for those of you who like watching sports (like me).

I definitely recommend this place to both locals and tourists because this pizza place is for sure a Palm Springs gem!

Dunno what is going on with this place, suddenly the pizza's are 30% smaller but the prices are still high, the ingredients still taste good but $20 a pizza now 30% SMALLER is an INSULT!. I get it tho, their located in a high traffic area feeding off of the people walking the street below, during festival nights and weekend/out of towner's that may or may not be back once they get the $check$.

Unfortunately you have now scared me off along with a lot of other previously loyal customers who loved you with your penny smart pound stupid cutting corners, believe me if matchbox made a square pizza they now would be cutting the corners off if it would save them 2 cents. I hear there is no more 50% Monday's... "it's seasonal"...whatever!

Matchbox: when your ready to be honest and return customer loyalty i will give you another try and recommend you to others, until then buh bye!

One of my favorite pizza places in CA!

Whenever I visit Palm Springs, I definitely pay a visit to Matchbox! I always order the Q special pizza (grilled marinated chicken / portabella mushrooms /roasted red peppers / zesty tomato sauce / mozzarella). They also have a full bar. The service is pretty good and I love the food, but it is a bit pricey! You should definitely swing by and give it a try if you're in Palm Springs!

Spicy tuna rolls: Mooshy and fishy. Lame

Ordered bottle of red, and asked if it could be chilled down cause too warm (yeah, because many places still DONT GET IT...the proper red wine temp.) and server looked at me like I was crazy.
Take a wine class dude, 2012...hello, on top, I'm buying a fricken bottle. We're not snobby, we just enjoy the food and wine experience; and know WTF we're doing.
Okay, if I order by the glass at a bar (say, house) maybe I'll forgive. Maybe.

    Pluses:
    Server was pretty nice overall.
Location/ setup is great, little tight bar area....no biggy.
    Music good.

I could prob give it a second chance.

    Mini burgers....not bad

My wife and I love this place. Everytime we are in PS we go here for at least one evening. Happy is great as they have discounts on apps AND drinks.

We've eaten several pizzas here, macaroni/cheese, sliders, salads. All great. We love sitting near the bar, or at the fire bar.

Since I am a beer snob, I am pretty satisfied with Matchbox as well. One of my favorite little things they do here is serve the draft beer in the pint glass from the brewery - whichever brewery that may be. Last time it was the Wipeout IPA from Port Brewing, served in a Port Brewing pint glass! Every time it is like this, I love it.

    Highly recommend.

Great place to happy hour!  Balcony, fire pit and patio dining is a delight.  Monkey made reservations and didn't have to wait one minute.

    Monkey do:
Q SPECIAL PIZZA - super-thin crust so you can eat it all in one sitting
PEAR & APPLE SALAD - light, delicious precursor to dinner

Great service, friendly and very nice, casual atmosphere.

Matchbox is a great location for dinner and drinks.  If you sit at the outside bar during the winter or the summer, you can watch the sun drop down behind the mountains while having a fairly priced happy hour cocktail.

They keep the patio heated, during the winter, several stand up heaters and a cozy fire pit in the front.

The food is reasonably priced, however if you come during happy hour you will leave with a much slimmer bill.  The appetizers really make their happy hour.

I am not a big pizza fan but their pizza is pretty good.  I have sat down in the restaurant and it really didn't meet the standards I was expecting, after all the hype, but I have given it a few more tries and it has really panned out.

Great place to hang out.  The decor is warm and cozy inside, and misty cool outside in the summer, and the heat lamps will keep you warm in the winter.

The food is consistently good and the service attentive.  You will always find locals (a good sign in a tourist town) as well as visitors here.  For a light dinner, opt for salad and and a appetizer.  We always enjoy the Mini Trio and a large salad with a glass of wine or cocktail for a weekday meal.   Or try the 3.6.9 Sliders if you are feeling like a burger, but don't want to over-do it.

Our recent visit, on Thursday, was after the Walk Of The Inns ( a chilly evening stroll through 16 of our local inns which is a yearly fundraiser for Toys For Tots) .

Colin, me, and our friend Jamie sat in the outside bar area under a toasty heat lamp. I had the Crab Cake sandwich which was served on a fresh Brioche roll, and we spilt an Apple and Pear salad (perfectly dressed, I might add).  In this case, the Crab Cake was a bit more cake, than crab, but I still enjoyed it.

The pizzas are wood-fired, thin crust, and always great!   I love their pepperoni pizza; salty, spicy and just greasy enough to satisfy.  Far from traditional, but you will leave happy.   (The only pizza I personally don't care for is the Fire and Smoke, not because its not a good pizza, I am not a fan of Smoked Gouda)

Sit at the fire table (if you can get a spot) or a balcony dinner table for some great people-watching.

Check out the Deals button on Yelp when checking in.   Tonight's deal was 50% off  a Spicy Ahi Tempura Roll, which was great!

    Enjoy!

I was very disappointed with this place!! After reading all the reviews, it seems like a great place to go with good food and service. However it was not so.

1 star for GREAT PIZZA, yes the pizza i really good. Greasy, but good. I would suggest the pepperoni and sautéed mushrooms, really good!

1 star for location! Location was right in the heart of downtown Palm Springs, close to the Hyatt hotel, where we were staying.

    Here are all the negatives:

We ordered our drinks, and it took FOREVER to show up.

We ordered the sliders, 3 of the Mozzerlla and 3 of the Swiss cheese, and ask for WELL DONE. We also wanted them out with our pizza.

The pizza comes first, and NOT with the burgers. The waitress said since they are going to be well done, the burgers will come out in a bit. So we said FINE.

The burgers came, and yes they looks so good and yummy, however i took a bite and it was PINK inside. I was so upset!  They took the burgers back and cooked them until they were well done.

once the burgers were out and well done, they were pretty darn good. So I do recommend these.

Service SUCKED! we never got refills, and never came around to check on us. It was 8:30pm on a wednesday night, and resturant was not even full, so there is no excuse!!

summary: Good food, BAD service, good location and pizza

I will not go again because it was such a bad experience.

Came here with a party of 10 on a Thursday evening after the street fair.  We sat at around 8:30pm and were tended to by a single very attentive server.  Despite being cold and windy out, the table was nice and warm because of the heat lamp above us.  Everyone ordered and the food was brought rapidly.  Drinks were refilled regularly and we were also often asked if we needed anything.  Great service.

I ordered the cream of crab soup, which was larger than I had expected and pretty tasty.  Definitely had a strong crabby taste to it.  Also ordered the crab cake sandwich (why not, right?) and fries.  The sandwich was very soft on the inside and had a light crust on the outside.  It was served plain on a bun with a side of some kind of remoulade.  I asked for some lettuce and tomato to go with it, which was promptly brought out.  The combination worked much better with the produce.

I was also given a side of a creamy vinaigrette as a substitute for ranch dressing with my fries.  It was ok, but not great.  The fries were a little bland.

Other people in my group ordered pizzas and seemed to really enjoy them.  One person got the burger, which was massive.  It also came with giant onion rings that had a lightly breaded texture but not a lot of seasoning.  The prices are reasonable, though slightly on the high side.  Fortunately, the food is pretty filling so you shouldn't leave unsatisfied at least.

Summary: Outside seating mostly, but heat lamps and fire pits.  Great service.  Prices are reasonable though a bit high.  Quantities are good.  Quality of food seems solid.  Good tastes and textures. Pizza seems to be particularly popular.  Cream of crab soup is good and filling.  Would probably come back again.

Had another great pizza at Matchbox... built my own with artichoke, roasted red pepper, and black olives. Not too heavy on cheese or sauce...  their thin crust is terrific. The manager, Red, and our server provided over-the-top excellent customer service.   Looking forward to going back and building another delicious pizza.
NOTE: Matchbox has an extensive microbrew beer menu.  I tried and enjoyed an organic beer.

Loved this awesome restaurant! Best place I have eaten in my five day vacation to Palm Springs this week for the film festival.

I ordered the Spinach Salad (warm spinach salad with walnuts, cheese and a vinaigrette) and also a small 4 cheese white pizza with a thin crispy crust layered with olive oil, buffalo mozzarella and pecorino cheeses.
Both were SUPERB! I love how they offered a white pizza, because I have
a medical condition where I can not eat tomatoes (tomato sauce). The taste was delicious and they even subbed out the garlic and added mushrooms to my pizza for no extra charge. The Salad was fabulous and their portion sizes were generous and perfect.

The place itself was impressive, and upstairs joint with multiple rooms and bars and blazing fire pits. They have the cutest boxes of matches with their logo and pretty awesome antique match boxes worked into their engraved wood decor.

Basically this was a total win. Except for my one gripe that we were seated near a table with a crying child. However that doesn't really reflect on the restaurant per-say except for this one experience.

    Would def. recommend and return.

We had an amazing evening at Matchbox.   Flew into Palm Springs late afternoon and made the reservation same day via Open Table.  Just in case, I noted in our reservation that we might be late due to flight delays!

When we checked in, the host had not only tracked that comment (we were actually a good bit early) but chatted us up as to where we were from, and made a point to seat us on one of the private balconies that overlooked the Plaza.  Chilly out, but he cranked up the heat lamp and we were in Nirvana.  We led out with their specialty margarita along with the mini-burgers and gouda Appetizer - then split the chicken pesto pizza and the heirloom tomato salad - topped of with a very nice bottle of Pinot Noir.  The server was friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere was absolutely magical.

Of course, timing is everything.  We were both tired and hungry.  I can honestly say the mini-burgers were outstanding, and the pizza was... very good!  But I'm going with high marks just for the ambiance of the place, and in appreciation as to how well the staff took care of our travel-wearied souls.

Review for dessert and service only...

Stopped in last night for a hot drink and a little something sweet. We sat outside under a heat lamp which was cosy and romantic. Sadly, they don't serve hot chocolate, so we opted for mint tea, strawberry cake, and bread pudding based on the server's recommendation of, "It's the devil"!

The cake (more like a cream pie) was quite delicious - light and flavorful with fresh strawberries and graham cracker crust accompanied by whipped cream. The bread pudding was so-so, neither bad nor good but not outstanding. The tea was...well, bagged mint tea.

What was especially off the mark, however, was the service. Perhaps the waiter was having an off night, but he was totally zoned out while taking our order. We had to ask twice for 2 mint teas, and our strawberry cake order was completely missed. We were also never given any silverware. Thankfully, it didn't take too long to cut a slice of the cake, and we were able to use the spoons that came with our tea to eat dessert. If we visit Palm Springs again, we might give this place another try, but with the plethora of restaurants around, I doubt it.

This is a true winner in Palm Springs. Where can you sit in January with a warm fire in fount of you and overlook the Sonny Bono Statue in downtown PS. A great location and some great pizza.

I am very picky about my pizza living in Chicago, visiting Italy four times and indulging in some great NY pies when I am there. Most of California is a wasteland for great pizza but this place really gets it. Very thin crust, wood fired and some delicious toppings. Just the right balance fof sauce and cheese is the key to great pizza. Most places cover their pies with way to much chesse. Not this place.

I have had other things here that the food has always been solid. The Blood Marys are great. A must if you are in PS at night.

Had an absolutely awful salad, with a golf ball size piece of dirt in it... they comped the meal, but they should have given us gift certs, the servers were really lame at responding to it all, and even though the manager, and chef came over to apologize, I am sorry, you just don't let a salad leave a kitchen unwashed.. disgusting. I have a photo to prove it... won't be back.

Delirium Tremens on tap and Strawberry Stoli: score one for MJ and one for my friend, Noelani. We stopped in during American Heat (a.k.a. Biker Weekend) on Saturday for a quick drink and some dessert. The barkeep was cute (extra points from MJ) and knowledgeable and recommended the delicious banana bread pudding: perfect blend of custard and bread and those flambéd bananas. (Caution: Not sure if it was actually a flambé proper, but they were HOT! Be careful.) Overall, it was a good experience.

On a side note: Before writing my review I happened to peruse the others and the girl who said she waited 35 minutes for a glass of wine is either a.) really bad at exaggerating time or b.) really stupid. I'm guessing both.

Final word: Didn't know it was a chain, but Matchbox: Palm Springs manages quite nicely to stave off the "cookie-cutter" syndrome.

3 1/2 Stars - I'm a fan of the beer and dessert. Will be back for a proper nosh soon!

Excellent service and consistently good food with a great happy hour. We always seem to land the blonde haired, flamboyant fellow who is a blast. Went there for happy hour and was pleased to see him working.

Ordered the Ginger Snap martini just to hear him razz me with thumbs clicking everywhere and singing out "Snap" every chance he had. Patio's the best and like I said above, take advantage of their rather short 5-6:30pm H-Hour.

Ginger Snap Martini was excellent as was the food.

It was a terribly hot night in palm spring and my husband and I were wandering the main street of palm springs looking for something to eat.
We had no clue what we were in the mood for.
We came across matchbox, shrugged at each other and went in.
We ordered the vegi pizza - it was ok at best.
There were way too many mushrooms on it for my liking, the crust was a bit oily, but at least it was eatable.
Service was really slow, but friendly nonetheless.

This is another regular stop when visiting Palm Springs. I've been very satisfied up until my last visit. Location is great, outdoor bar with fire, food, steaks, everything is just fine. The issue I had the last time around is I ordered to go, which I have done in the past with no problems. I ordered the "Adult Mac and Cheese", this is an entrée not an appetizer. And for $24.00 plus tax it was far from worth it. I don't know if it had something to do with being to go, but the quantity was not worth $26.00 and the sausage compared to the advertized photo wasn't nearly the quantity either, very small and weak. I know food never looks the same as the Ad photos, but until I got back to my room and opened the box, I was like "wow, that's $26.00 worth of Mac and Cheese? I visit Palm Springs regularly and I'll give them another shot, but if it's a repeat of this incident I'll be sure to let them know. 5 stars before the Mac and Cheese, 4 stars now.

Stopped by on a whim after wandering around looking for a place to eat with the family amongst all of the restaurants downtown. The place was busty however we were seated immediately. The food was good as was the service. Also took advantage of a yelp check-in deal to get 50% off the cut spicy tuna roll which was very good. Our son ordered the crispy seared salmon and really  liked it. Overall the family enjoyed each dish we ate. The wait staff were really good. We would definitely eat there again.

I've always left at least 18% when I tip, even if the service is so-so, but being involved in the service industry myself I know what it's like when things are busy. If my employees have bad service, I take them aside and try to see what's going on.... Well I think someone should have taken my server aside as well.

It was awful. The hostess/busers helped our table more then our server did. Sure, I may go back sometime, maybe our server was just not on his A game. Who knows.

    The food was great.

Needless to say, I tipped about 10% and I wanted to give it directly to the hostess and bussers.

Every year, my girlfriends and I descend upon Palm Springs for a fun weekend in the sun and every year we get stuck eating at some over priced, crappy, over salted food, dive piece of poo.

This year, however, we found Matchbox. Our group sat at a wonderful round table, so that we could see everyone else in our group. The food was fantastic, I had the crab cake sandwich, to DIE for. We also shared the heirloom tomato salad, with super yummy balsamic reduction drizzled over.

The only thing that I would say made the dinner not 5 star was our waitress. She wasn't bad, she was pretty good, but I think she was visibly intimidated by our table. She didn't write anything down (not sure if this is a matchbox policy) and came back twice to ask us what we ordered to drink, without any drinks.

Drinks were big, they had Great White on tap, and they tolerated 8 loud mouthed ladies on a mission to stuff our faces with booze and food.

BF wanted pizza, I wanted salad, so we left... only to learn that not much is open in PS past 9:30. (Shanghai Reds to the rescue)

    YUMS!
came to palms spring late friday night..party 8..didnt know what to eat so we randomly yelped and found matchbox.  ambiance was nice, food was yums and drinks were good.

started off with 2 pear and apple salads...which was good but portion sizes were small.  mixed greens with candied pecans, goat cheese and slices of apples/pears on the side.
3 pizzas-veggie, fire and smoke, and q special.
thin crust...cripsy and chewy! doesnt make you feel overwhelmingly heavy afterwards.
    the pizzas are great!!!

Went here for happy hour with my mom and Sis , the place was all but deserted, in the main dinning area, so we had our choice of tables, we sat close to the street to people watch,(the few that were braving the august heat) , we were promptly greeted by Aaron , who filled our water glasses and started us off with drinks, I think 6$ specialty cocktails and my mom got a 10 $margarita (don't be fooled it was tasty and came in a shaker glass that was ours to keep, bonus!! Lol! The margarita was tasty and actually had a second full serving in the shaker. double bonus!! I had the match box punch very fruity and sweeeeeett!! Too much for my taste( but as my Sis pointed out" what should I have expected with something with the word punch in it? ")for nibbles we a had a pizza with prosciutto and meatballs it was tasty, but I like my pizza with crisp prosciutto and theirs its layered on after, still good but not my preference, also the pizza roll ( chicken pesto ) was good but lacked alittle something to balance out the saltiness , my Sis and I both agreed some fresh tomatoes would have been perfect for it!! Also not to be missed are the mini burgers absolutely delish!! Also I had another drink which was their version of a long island iced tea with watermelon vodka, ( should have been my first choice) !! My mom and I shared the bread pudding,  which we both love anywhere we go, my only complaint was not enough gooey bananas on it , but otherwise awesome!! All in all  for some good drinks and a full belly 60$ ( including a 20% tip for cute and ever helpful Aaron ) it was a great experience!!

I'm used to San Francisco happy hours. Like 4-8pm happy hours. Thank god we went online to see their hours since it's 5-6:30. We heard good things and my friend Jess and I rushed over after checking into our hotel.

I'm not too sharp when it comes to desert eating, but I felt the apps for $11-16 was pushing it a little. However when our food came it was pretty good and I left happy.

We started with the crab and avocado salad. VERY good. Not what I was expecting. Delightfully surprised.
We shared the fire and smoke pizza. SO delicious! I'm not a huge fan of thin crust pizza but it was definitely legit.

One thing I also loved- they have 21st Amendment water mellon wheat beer. From my neighborhood in SF. It brought a smile on my face and helped me not miss San Francisco as much!

If you like thin pizza with crispy edges, I think you'll find Matchbox a good spot for you!

I had shared the $25 Summer Deal (available only during certain hours) with a friend, here's what we got:

Apple and Pear Salad w/ vinaigrette (she said this was good)
Chopped Salad w/ vinaigrette - enjoyed this, but the pasta was flavorless
Pepperoni Pizza - small pepperoni rounds, just enough cheese

The food was all great, and the ambiance matched it well.  I love the logo and the "matchbox" theme of the restaurant.

I think this place would be even better at night, but I happened to go before the sunset.

    I'll definitely be here again!

This place is on the second floor in the heart of downtown Palm Springs. You could easily get lost in the mix and not visit this place but it is worth taking some time to check it out. The pricing is not cheap (and we went on a Sunday night when Palm Springs is dead to the world) and we were given a great private balcony table.

To make matters better they are running a Yelp deal which offers 50% any large pizza. They have a great collection craft beer to drink with your meal. We grabbed some Allagash for our meal.

The pizza is made with some quality ingredients and the wait staff was a huge help and friendly. They put out an offer of several things to do in the area on a Sunday since the city was so dead once we left dinner. A great overall experience and would come back again. Our severs name was Sam if I remember right and I would recommend him to anyone coming in to dine.

The manager read the review I posted on another site, and kindly apologized and offered to fix it.  He invited us back for complimentary dinner.  My faith in customer service is renewed :)

What a better way to beat the heat but enjoying another heated meal?!

At first, this place was a bit confusing to get to as it sits on the second floor of the building. But it actually adds to the allure of the place. Basically, you are able to people watch like crazy!

As the menu states.... CAUTION, due to extreme weather, pizza may be burnt! And to that message I say... that is very true.

Part of our pizza was burnt but it wasn't bad as I thought it would be. My friend and I ordered the Matchbox Meat pizza. To be honest, we still left feeling slightly hungry. The crust was perfect but the pepperoni erred on the side of overly oily. For something so small, I was surprised to see how oily each pepperoni got.

Our server was extremely friendly and the service was prompt. it also helped that i sipped on a screwdriver. lol

The only downside is that i wasn't too crazy about the smoking on the patio. Being as the time we went it was extremely busy, we were stuck next to another individual that was smoking... ugh. I mean I understand that your thing is "matchbox" but when there is limited inside seating and all it is, is patio... well it would best serve your other patrons if they didn't bust a cigarette and blow smoke your way...

What I like about this restaurant is the atmosphere.
Mom and i sat outside overlooking Palm Canyon. The waitress helped us pick out a pizza we would both enjoy: Sweet Sopresatta & Wild Mushroom. I wished we had ordered the large because it was so good.
The lemon drops were exceptionally well made, so i had two. Mom had a sip of mine and ordered one.
Dessert was the Fresh Fruit Pizza which I did not like. The crust was soggy.
I will be going back for pizza, lemon drops, and to people watch.
