This place is wonderful. The husband and wife are so nice, and are always genuinely happy to see you. The prices are reasonable, and the quality's great.
A bit out of my way, but well worth the trip. Also, there's 20 minute loading just down the street, so it's easy to drop off/pick up without having to pay for a meter.
Accepts credit only over $30. -

I am not going here anymore. I don't care how cute their dog Diamond is, or how nice they are.
I recently brought 4 items here: cashmere sweater (which I only wore once previously), a pleated skirt, a pleated dress, and a dress that needed a small seam stitched. The total was $45 which I thought was a bit pricey. The pleated skirt and dress came back looking NOT pleated. They actually ironed the dress flat. WTF?! I am also sitting here angrily writing this review because I am wearing my cashmere sweater that I just had dry cleaned and am noticing that there is a GIANT hole in the back. I am too embarassed to even get up from my desk today ! I AM SO ANGRY!!!!!!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Master Tailor is my go-to place, even though it's hella out of the way for me and the two-week turnaround time can be a bit of a drag. I come in to get my jeans and pants hemmed all the time (pitfalls of being a short girl) and quality is exceptional for the low prices that they charge. The couple that own this establishment are sweet and friendly, plus they're honest about what can and can't be done to the clothes you're bringing in for alterations. Plus, who doesn't love a friendly little dog skittering around and greeting customers at the door?
I recently brought in a suit jacket which was just a tad too big for me. We discussed in length the way that I wanted it altered, pinned it up, and he quoted me a cost that was pretty reasonable. When I came back to pick it up, he said he'd decided to fix the cuffs another way since he thought it would look better. Though it was an extra $10, it did look much better than what we'd originally discussed... normally this kind of change would irk me a bit, but it worked in his favour this time :) And now I have a great jacket that I can wear to work! -

I'm forever grateful. They got out an awful red wine stain from a cream sweater after three other dry cleaners turned my sweater away saying it was a lost cause. Master Tailor took it on telling me it would take at least two weeks for them to try and no guarantees. When I came back it was good as new and only $8. I was shocked and am their biggest fan now!

Finally a found a tailor in Philly. I took two jackets here to be fixed after they had almost been destroyed by another tailor. Check my reviews for the name of that place. The jackets are now perfect. Excellent professional work. I was confident he could make them a little better but to my pleasant surprise they now fit like they were custom made from scratch. I am amazed!

Review from Helen C.

Been to this place twice, both were great experiences.
Have had alterations done on pants--getting them back and examining the cuff, I could not tell it had been altered, they were very careful to do it precisely and neatly and they had kept the original cuff. The pants were the perfect length after tailoring.
Clothes always come back pristine and once they fixed a puckered hem on a pants leg that I must have stepped on, for no extra charge.
Boyfriend took some way-too-big sportcoats and jackets to be tailored that unfortunately the tailor wasn't able to fix, because the extent of the alterations needed would have ruined them. The tailor measured him thoroughly and gave him some great tips on what to look for in a suit next time. The tailor did a better job measuring and was more knowledgeable than the salesperson that sold him the suits at a high-end department store. Appreciated his opinion and that he was honest about not being able to alter the jackets without making them look bad.
Very friendly, shop doesn't smell like chemicals, they have an adorable dog, and so far all clothes have come back in perfect condition. Prices are reasonable for dry-cleaning, somewhat high for alterations, but I'm happy to pay a little extra for the superb quality. -

Before moving to the RH neighborhood, I've had the same tailor for over 10 years. I checked here and asked a couple of local shops for their recommendations. The idea of having someone else work on my clothing worried me a bit but I needed a lot of clothing tailored and gave Master Tailor & Cleaners a go.
I needed to raise the hem on a new pair of A.P.C jeans and a pair of Diesel jeans for going out, slim down a Dior waist coat and trousers for New Years, and 6 other pair of slacks for work and a sewing work on a ripped Valentino tie.
I got to admit, they did a fantastic job. The stitching on the hem on A.P.C jeans were neat, even and straight. He knew they were selvage Japanese denim and made sure to align the seam with the blue strip inside the jeans. Even with other customers waiting, he had me tried on every single thing and fitted each of them. The Dior waist coat and the slacks came out beautifully. He was even careful enough to make sure that the CD logo printed inside the waist coat were even when he took them in. Yes, they did charge a high amount for their services but it was VERY FAIR and that reflected the high quality work that they did which is fine with me.
I'll definitely use them again.
NB: The turn around time is a bit longer here than most places so plan ahead. I spend a lot of money on my clothing and I appreciate the fact that he took the time to do excellent work on my clothing. -
Review from Vichet O.
Expert repairs on two suits, and a great job tailoring a third - all for a reasonable price. Not much more to say.
I went in the week before I left for vacation to drop off two suits for cleaning/button repair. They repaired all the front-facing buttons on my two suits and cleaned/pressed for 30 bucks. Word up!
I also dropped off a third jacket that I needed to have taken in. All I had to do was let the owner eye-ball the fit of one of my other jackets, and then he just had my put on my new one, placed a few pins, and two weeks later (wedding season, so it takes longer), I have a jacket that fits perfectly.
To be fair, I always think I look good. But, when I picked up my suits, I fell into all sorts of new love for myself. Watch out, ladies. I've got the secret Konami code of ball-punching new-hotness. Thank you, Master Tailor and Cleaners! -
Review from Ashley L.
They're the best! My favorite pair of jeans needed some patch work and, like the procrastinator I am, I needed them the next day. Fortunately, they were able to accommodate me. She originally quoted to have them finished later in the week, but happily accepted my request for next-day service. When I picked up my jeans, I was very pleased with the great work completed in such a short amount of time. And the price was unbeatable. Needless to say, I will be using Master Tailor from now on.

They are FANTASTIC!!!! I had red wine spilled all over my white jacket and blue and white dress, and they got it all out (and I didn't bring it in till a month after it happened). They are a bit pricey and they do need a little while to take care of major stains (mine took a week) but they have a repeat customer for sure.

I had a poem all ready to go to describe my experience. Then I realized that it was in the form of a Haiku. I was worried that people would think I was being racist so I redid it to fit the Sijo form. Only then did I remember that Sijo is Korean. So I opted to try for a Limerick, but had trouble rhyming with suit. Hoot? Moot? Fruit? Brute? What kind of nonsense poem would that make?
Finally, I said screw it and decided to do one of those free verse things that really is my excuse for lazy writing. Shut up and appreciate it:
A suit needed to be cleaned
A suit was taken on a windy day
There was a cute old lady and a grumpy looking man
The lady offered to fix a torn inside pocket for free
That offer I accepted; should I not have?
A suit they cleaned quite well so I thank them
A suit is now ready so I thank Yelp
The man offered me cake
That last part is a lie -

This is one of those cases where you don't want to put 5 stars and tell how truly awesome this place is because you want it all to yourself. But I cannot lie, it is downright perfection. The couple who owns it are so sweet and take genuine care with any garment you bring in. I've had grease stains removed from silk, a fancy dress hemmed, and regular clothes tailored. They need at least 2 weeks to work since they are very busy, but if you think you'll need something soon, stop in and see what they can do.

You Get What You Pay For...
In this case, the best service and workmanship money can buy. As a first time customer, the owner took time on a busy Saturday to mark and pin four brand new pairs of jeans, and never made me feel hurried as I went to change into the next pair.
When I picked up my jeans, the stitching along the hems matched the rest of the jean stitching perfectly for all four (different) pairs. The hem along the bottom of the "vintage" jeans was even distressed to match the rest of the fabric. That is something I would not have even thought to look for, but noticed immediately.
I'm looking forward to doing business with Master Tailor & Cleaners in the future. -

I've now been a loyal Master Cleaners customer for four months, on the suggestion of a kind real estate broker who helped show me the ropes when I moved to Philadelphia.
For straightforward alterations - men's shirts, jeans, etc - they are terrific and the tailor does nice, clean, consistent work.
For cleaning, they are the best in Philly. Frequently, I'll find that Mrs. Master Cleaner has located a few spots, a hole forming in a shirt, and loose buttons. Without asking me or charging me, the Mrs and Mr team make sure my clothing comes back in great condition.
Definitely worth going out of your way to ensure your clothes are cared for properly. -
Review from Erin F.
I bought this excellent and excellently ugly vintage dress for $10. It was from the 80s, it was (and continues to be) made out of some non-airy, unbreathable polyester, had poofy sleeves ("I like your sleeves, they're real big") and a somewhat conservative hemline. Yet, I could see greatness shining through. The color scheme, stripey pattern, and flared skirt called to me. So I took it in to the good people at Master Tailor. For $32, I had the hem taken up 5" and the sleeves REMOVED.
I came back to pick it up a week and a half later and found an excellently revamped party dress. The sleeves were seamlessly removed and the hem is the perfect above-knee length. It went from an almost fugly 80s working woman dress to a breezy (although still, 100% polyester) gem. Yay.
I have an excellent, perfect fitting pair of bell bottoms I got at an extreme discount through Gilt Group that are about 4" too long so I will be taking them in to be hemmed there, as well. While It's not cheap to have clothes fixed and, essentially, reconstructed, but if you get a decent deal on something that's not perfect, it is absolutely worth it to have it fixed and Masterfully Tailored to your liking.
They are great at their craft and know their shizzle for real. Five perfect fit stars. -

This man is a magician. He can take any ill-fitting suit and make it look like it was made just for you. He has even corrected mistakes made by other tailors, free of charge. For example, I took a pair of pants in to get taken in, and he noticed that the hem job done by a tailor in the Fairmount neighborhood was not done properly. So he fixed the hemming too. As long as you don't need your garment returned too quickly (give him at least 7 days, he's a busy guy), you'll have no problems. The couple who run the place are honest and charge standard prices for excellent work.

I bought a lovely dress that had unattractive cap sleeves, so I took it to Master Tailor to have the sleeves removed. I'd had jeans hemmed here before, so I knew they did good work, but in this instance, I needed the alteration to be done in just two short days. They took the dress, even though it was a very busy time for them, and the alterations were perfect. They did a fantastic job and were very accommodating of my ridiculously short timeframe.

I recommended Master Tailor, based on Yelp reviews, to a friend who needed her wedding dress altered. The alterations were simple so I crossed my fingers that it would be ok. She was thrilled with the results and was suprised how promptly they were done. So when my bridesmaid dress arrived three sizes too big I knew where to go.
The tailor seemed concerned about being able to get it to fit since it was so big and asked me to come for a couple fittings. He was really cute and kept asking me "why'd they send you this? You're not this big! Why'd they send you this so big? You're not that size!" That makes any girl feel good, right? It fit perfectly on the first fitting and he finished everything up and had it ready a couple days later. Due to my own procrastination, I only had two weeks before the wedding when I took it in and even with two fittings he had it done with days to spare. It looked perfect on the wedding day.
Everyone there was very friendly and they seemed to know their regular customers well. Overall it was a great experience. -
Review from Carrie G.
Last month I found myself in a bit of a jam. The spring rain was in full force, and my beloved cream-colored trench coat had a HUGE blue stain on the front. What was the stain? How did it get there? I didn't know, but I took it to Master Tailor & Cleaners anyway.
After a bit of detective work, we determined that my blue work tote had bled onto my trench coat on some previous rainy day. The lady at the counter said she wasn't sure if she could get the stain out, but she said she'd try.
One week and $20 later, my trench looked just like new. One might think $20 is a bit much for a cleaning job, but it sure beats having to find and buy a new coat! -

I went here today because I'm in search of a good tailor. I will say that I do think Philadelphia really lacks in this department. I was very pleased. The service was great. My dress will be ready in a week, and the alterations cost is very affordable. I have been to several tailors in the city, and this was definitely the most pleasant fitting I've had.
Added plus: They just called me to tell me my dress was ready! Great customer service! -

I love my kittens, but I don't love the fact that their hair gravitates towards all my nice clothes regardless of my efforts to prevent it. A bunch of new cashmere sweaters and these really nice, REALLY expensive black pants had become choked with kitty dirt and I needed to find a dry cleaners asap - but only one I could trust! Yelp to the rescue yet again! The reviews for Master Tailor & Cleaners (although primarily about tailoring) brought me to their door, which is only two blocks from my apartment! Awesome!!
After the great cleaning job they did, especially on the items that had somehow gotten encrusted litter on them (don't ask because I don't know), I will definitely try them out for any tailoring needs - which will probably happen soon once spring cleaning occurs. The owners are so sweet and nice I just want to give them more business! I didn't need my stuff asap, so 5 days later I was waltzing out with my clothing so clean it looked brand new! I'll just have to figure out how to keep the kitties away from them... -

They are so friendly here!! Often times when you pick something up and you've been before (if you are in a rush or they are busy tailoring someone) they hand you your stuff and say "pay next time, don't worry!" I once picked up a dress for my girlfriend early (the rest of her stuff was not due to be done for another few days) they handed me the dress and said don't pay now!
It's such a great neighborhood place! I've had three pairs of pants tailored here and a dress shirt cleaned that required them to wash it 3 times (wine & grease stains set in) most placed would give up but they were great!1 Previous Review: Show all »

While this shop deservedly garners praise, I have to say that these guys won't be my regular tailor/cleaners. This is mostly due to the turnaround, their queue is much too long. It's fine if you don't need your garments back for days on end, but any time you need a quick turn around, you might find yourself in a jam.
I decided to take my first suit that I needed for a wedding here based on all the positive feedback. Everything upfront went well, really liked the couple and he seemed to know what he was talking about. The thing that went wrong was that he didn't listen to my preference and input for how I wanted the suit to look as far as fit. I wanted a fit that I described but he talked me out of it saying it wouldn't look right. I ended up with a very loose, traditional suit fit. This I only realized after waiting 3 weeks for some standard hemming, and sleeve work. Granted that is because they are very popular and very busy.
At that point I knew I needed more work done because the suit just didn't look great. I brought the suit back and I asked if he could do it more like I had originally wanted and even showed him pictures, which he said he understood, but that he wouldn't be able to turn around the suit again in the week I had left before the wedding. I ended up taking my suit elsewhere and got it taken care of quickly.
I'm sure, given a longer timeline, he could have fixed up the suit how I wanted it. He came off as very skilled, and the work he did do on the sleeves and hem was done well, just not to my fit preference. But with the three week backlog he had, there wasn't a chance.
Update: After seeing my review, the owner contacted me to say he was sorry about the way it worked out and that if I still had any problems I should bring it back to him in the future. -

I was in a pinch and I took a pair of pants here to be hemmed at 7:30pm on a Tuesday and told the woman I needed them the next day by 5:00pm. She just smiled and said "no problem, they'll be done by 4:30". Sure enough, I stopped in at 4:45 the next day and my pants were perfect! Really great, friendly, hard working people. I will never go anywhere else. just a note: They take credit card but I think there is a $10 minimum.

I moved to the city pretty recently and this is the first dry cleaner I've tried, simply because it was convenient for me. However, they did an excellent job. I dropped off a chunky knit scarf and a silk blouse that had a pretty old stain on it, since I kept forgetting about it. The cute little woman marked the stain and gave me a pick-up time about 6 days away. I didn't have an urgent need to have them back, so that was fine. Not sure if I would have been able to get them sooner. When I went back a week later to pick them up, the stain had completely disappeared! I was amazed. My bill was about $10 which is reasonable. I will be back!

I have been looking for a seamtress/tailor in the area. Saw the many reviews here and gave them a call to see if they were able to alter a leather jacket I have. The person who answered the phone didn't speak English and couldn't understand me and hung up on me because they couldn't understand. I proceeded to call back and explained we must've been disconnected and that I am just seeking information regarding having a leather jacket altered and would this be something they would be able to do. Again, she had no clue what i was saying. I repeated it several times and asked if there was someone else that I can speak with and ended up just saying forget it after several attempts of rephrasing my question! Oh, well....my initial interaction with them was disappointing. Oh, well....I will continue my search! :-(

If you need to get a shirt tailored, this is definitely the place!
I recently moved to the area, and before trusting a tailor to more complex projects, I had a few shirts taken in at various places in the neighborhood.
Mr. Kim was the only one who paid so much attention to detail that all the stripes still lined up when he was finished. The seams were done so well, it was hard to tell where they were actually altered.
Needless to say, Mr. Kim did a great job on my hand made shirts. He charges a few dollars more, but you get what you pay for, and the shop's shih-tzu is quite a character! -

Walked in with two suits to be tailored, and was met with an immediate frown. I was asked what I needed done (have both suits taken in), and was told it would take two weeks. I said sure, but was immediately rebuffed and then told more like 3 weeks. He then recommended I go elsewhere when I said 3 weeks would be too long. Perhaps they are that good that they can basically refuse business and be unfriendly. Thus, I am one less customer that they will ever have.

After extensive Yelp research on tailors in the area, I went to Master Tailor & Cleaners to get two pairs of jeans hemmed and one repaired (a very large tear underneath the butt). I am happy to say that when I picked up my pants today, they were all perfect! On one pair, the original hem was extra wide and had special stitching, and the tailor was able to reattach the original hemming flawlessly while still taking off length. As for the huge tear, you can hardly see that it was ever ripped. When the neon sign in the window says "Jeans Expert Tailor," I promise you it does not lie!

I love, love, love this place! Not only did he do a fantastic job on the boatload of tailoring I brought in, but I have this sweater dress that I love, but after taking it to less experienced cleaners, it had begun to pill and look terrible. I asked him and his wife if they could do anything with it, not expecting much, but it now looks like new. I was also really touched that he carried all my cleaning to my car for me, saying it was much too heavy for me to handle on my own (not entirely true, but still very sweet!).

i don't often need garments altered, so when i needed a tailor i took to yelp to find a place to bring a bridesmaid dress that needed some work done. the alterations i needed were simple: shorten the straps, waist taken in and a bustle. this is where the problem began.
i personally had no idea what a bustle was supposed to look like and apparently the owner here didn't either. after much confusion, he sewed a clear button on the back and used the tag that was sewn into the inside of the dress to hold up the train. not knowing the difference, i assumed this was acceptable. needless to say, i was the only girl out of 8 bridesmaids who had a totally incorrect and very unattractive bustle. maybe it was my fault for trusting/assuming that someone in the business of altering garments would automatically know what i was talking about when i made this request, but i was mortified when i saw the other girls dresses and had to spend 12 hours in something hideous. i paid $50 for everything, which i think is on the high end for the quality of work and knowledge i received.
if you have something simple or you know EXACTLY what needs to be done to your garment, you will be safe here. expect a 2-3 week turnaround time and a crowd of other patrons to be there during your visit. -

The owners are the nicest people, and I love seeing their little dog, Diamond, and his many couture ensembles. They are also meticulous about their work - everything I take here comes back sparkly clean, pressed just right, and stitched up tidily. They do a great job on repairs and I think their prices are quite fair for the quality of the work.
