Review from Shy A.
Again....with Massage Envy. I made my appointment for a facial the day before...Easy peasy. Then I realized my doofus mistake...I booked my appointment right in the middle of the Niner game....Uggg. They have mean cancellation policies at this place, so I quickly called the minute they opened to see if they would be able to squeeze me in earlier..."No problem!" Pow! I was on my way to a morning of pampering to only enjoy my afternoon screaming and yelling at some sports bar. Check.
I saw Mary who took great care of me. She was conversational but knew the moments to zip it and let me relax and float away a bit. Check-in was easy and quick and they were punctual. There is nothing worst than having your appointment start late, so I love that they were able to accommodate me early and were on time. They use Murad products during the facial which I love-they are very easy on sensitive and delicate skin. They are not a ultra luxe spa by any means but with a years membership from CW, I'll gladly come here for my massage fix and facials. -

I love Massage Envy and have been a member for years, starting in Phoenix. One of my favorite things about my membership is that I can use it at any location around the country!! This is currently my 'home' location and I am completely happy with it.
I can usually get an appointment that day or a few days ahead, I've had some great massage therapists, parking is easy (strip mall lot), the girls at the front desk are really nice and friendly .. and what else is there to care about? I have a great rate since I signed up years ago and get good massages and service. Nuff said. -

Here's the real deal. Facts:
Massage Envy's are everywhere making it really convienient to hop off of a plane in another part of the country and get a massage and facial at 9pm with your membership. There are appointments 7 days a week and they are open until 10pm. A massage and facial before rolling into bed after a long flight or long day at work is a sweet sweet thing.
Some therapists are far worse than any I've had at any spa anywhere. I swear they must not test out new therapists. I worked at a spa and the new therapist had to massage the manager and another massage therapist before we decided to keep him/her during the probationary period. That would be a good policy to adopt here. Maybe they don't care about the quality because they need so many therapists to work...I don't know, they do email you surveys, but I digress...
Some therapists are as good as the best I've had anywhere. It's all about getting hooked up with a good one, and no, I'm not telling you the name of mine - she's too busy anyway. ;) She is fantastic though.
The value you get is well worth it if you have *expensive* massage tastes like I do. If you are a deep tissue kind of person, this will be the best value you find anywhere because there is no extra charge for deep work. Most deep tissues run you over $100.00, so to get them for $39.00 is a steal. Yeah, that's a $60.00 savings folks!
You have more membership options than you probably realize. If I were you I wouldn't sign up for a year membership. No way! I don't give anyone access to billing my debit card - period. So, for $177.00 I was able to purchase a 3 month membership which has all the benefits of a full membership. Basically, I got one 90 minute massage and two 60 minute massages for that price for use at any time in the 3 months, plus any additional massage I get within those 3 months is set at $39.00 for 60 mins. That's one hell of a deal for deep tissue massages. Facials (not offered at this location) are $49.00 and use Murad products which I love. There is no auto-renewal with the 3 month plan.
It's a great thing for people like me who have serious knots and need a wellness plan that's affordable and includes massage. I go bi weekly and am really loving it.
You can tip on your credit card even if you are using a package massage which is a major plus in my book! -

I like it deep and hard - my massage that is...
While working in Point Loma, I saw this place had finally opened last year and hung a lefty in a hurry to see if there were any walk-in appointments. Sure, enough, I was able to get in right away on 2 occasions and received satisfactory, but not outstanding (and cheap) massages. Well, third time's always a charm...NOT!
I was expecting a lithe hippy chick (or dude) wearing Chi pants, redolent of patchouli, but what I got instead was an unhealthy looking, obese (not just zaftig), pimply faced therapist who was dressed like an Oompa Loompa on furlough from the Little Shop of Horrors. Sorry - not hatin' just sayin'.
I told her what was achin' and said I liked deep tissue work. What I got was a bone on bone (no not a BONER) massage that had me leaping off the table in more pain than I came in with. OUCH!!! After that I just called it quits and never went back. -

OMG. I never was able to get my massage here, but this is solely for their customer service moreover lack there of. The day before the wedding my bridesmaids and I decided we should all go get massages. My cousin, who is a massage envy fanatic transferred 2 credits over to pay for my massage and my other cousin. My cousin & bridesmaid got their massages but due to a nail catastrophe my other cousin and I never made it in time for our massages. We called to cancel and reschedule explaining our dire situation and they advised her that 19.95 will be charged twice for the cancellation of both of us. Therefore it was charged on my card. I called to reschedule recently and the point loma branch assured me that they were able to pull up my name and saw that it was cancelled but there was no credit. I got frustrated and called a different branch - the one I intended on going too in Encinitas, and the girl who assisted me was nice enough to do some research and found my credit that was transferred right away. She didn't understand why the point loma branch failed to locate it, and informed me that I should have never been charged 19.95 x2 to begin with and that I needed to call them and have them refund my money. Quite frankly, I haven't done so because I think that with my short fuse, I might cuss out a storm and say things that will not be sooo "nice". The girls here are retarded, or semi-idiotic ...or whatever else describes an incapable individual - I would recommend going to a different branch to avoid the headache.

I don't really understand all the bad reviews for this place. What do y'all expect? It's a cheap massage!
I fancy myself to be a connoisseur of massages. I love getting them but I can be picky. I really believe that a good massage to me may not be a good massage to you, and vice versa. My favorite spa is La Costa but I also have a membership to Massage Envy. (Just a little background so you know I know what I'm talking about).
I really like Massage Envy. I usually call a few hours before I want to go in and I've never had a problem getting in. Most massages are awesome and but I've had a few that weren't. I keep a list of the masseuses I've like and the one I'd like to avoid in the future. I'm willing to try new people and 9 times out of 10, I'm not disappointed.
Massage Envy isn't a spa. I don't think they try to be. It's more like physical therapy. When people comment "it's like Super Cuts", well, who cares? The massage is good and cheap, right? What else do you need? And yes, they try to sell you a package but that's what their business is. I've never felt badgered. If you don't want to join, don't join. Also, as far as the bright lights or temperature comments - you can ask to adjust all that stuff. You can even bring your own music if you so desire. If it's too bright, why wouldn't you ask the masseuse to turn down the lights? That just doesn't even make sense to me.
I've been to the downtown and Point Loma locations. For parking, Point Loma is way better. I think I like the downtown building better though. The Point Loma location isn't very sound proof and I could hear some noise from the front desk. And I love, love those lifesaver pep-o-mints they have. -
Review from Ferdi E.
so I'm not gonna lie. i get massaged. alot.
it started young, when i was fight training... and the old Thai dude that my trainer got for me before a muay thai fight would rub out the aches, pains and stress right before i would get in the ring and after the match...
then i started working out alot, and realized the benefits of sports massage to relieve pain from lactic acid build up in my muscles... massages were pretty routine. later my doctor jumped on board, and mentioned how circulatory massage was great for lowering blood pressure, lower cortisol (the stress chemical) and raise endorphins (the feel good chemicals), and improve over all blood circulation. so I'm not ashamed to say I'm a big fan of massages.
so i thought it was pretty cool that my wife bought us membership to massage envy. at first, i was skeptical... I'm not the type of guy to go to a fancy pants spa for the full spa experience... i tend to think of my massages as either totally professional (like from a sports trainer or physical therapist) or old school asian (like from a strong handed chinese or thai chick taught in the arts of thai massage and stretching).
but i guess massage envy has its perks. they are like the hiltons or supercuts of massage, meaning i can expect the same massage services at any massage envy - this benefits me several ways... when i travel, i can use my massage membership in various cities; i also expect roughly the same massage menu and facilities; and if i cant schedule my desired time at one massage envy in the same city, i can totally schedule at another massage envy location in the same city.
and when it boils down, a massage is still just a massage - if you communicate with your masseuse on what you need (ie Deep tissue, Circulatory, Swedish, Sports, Reflexology, etc). For the price i think i get a pretty good massage experience (heated tables, soothing background music, clean and tranquil rooms); even my wife and i love doing the couples massage (tandem tables in the same room).
i know 5 star spas at fancy hotel retreats probably get higher reviews for their massage services... but if you can roll with those types of spas EVERY MONTH, more power to you. -

Front Desk Staff :
Confused: Mixed up my first appointment with someone else's. Left me sitting there so I volunteered to go with the "abandoned" masseuse.
Rude: Sit there and talk about their screw up in front of me.
Pushy: Big on the membership idea even AFTER the lack of couth and coordination aforementioned.
Massage:
Nice room, quiet, good table.
Competent masseuse (thank God!)
Be sure to ask for experienced staff if you are a veteran - this place is for the less familiar consumer. -

Evan is heaven.. Julissa will make you feel like you are in bliss----aaaaaaahh.. [wanted to make it rhyme]
These two therapists are amazing and do great sports massages and deep tissues..
However, the front service can be a bit spotty, They switched my therapist on me one time w/ someone who supposedly specialized in swedish massages. The therapist spent 50 mins moisturizing me, instead. They also seemed to have a number of computer kinks and always had me down under a wrong name.
BUT! If you can get pass the front door and on to table: have Have evan or julissa work on you, its worth it! -

My girlfriend gave me a gift card for one massage. I used to be a member and I was giving it another try. I made an appointment. They told me I have enough for 1 massage. I get there and they tell me I have to pay an extra $69 to get a massage( with a gift card that was supposed to be a FREE MASSAGE. WHAT? That really made me rethink getting one there and joining. The manager came out and explained and said I can pay $10.00 more & than I wanted to tip. I was over it. I see why I don't like corporate massage places especially Massage Envy. I am not joining now or NEVER. SEE why they have awful reviews. Hmm. Now I really need a massage LOL

This place is like SuperCuts. You feel like you are getting a service, but you are really getting the "idea" of a service. The whole experience is mediocre and you always wonder afterwards why you didn't pay the extra $20 and get the real deal. $70 for a 50 minute so -so massage is expensive. The set up is not at all relaxing and I have found the after results are super short lived. All in all...not worth your money and time. Pay a bit more and go to a legitimate place.
12/16: Update on this place...When you try to cancel your membership you will enter a "cult-like" universe. They will make it nearly impossible to cancel out your membership without 30 days notice and a whole lot of hassle. This alone, tells me this place is less than legitimate. And, why do they try to convince you to stay at the lower price while telling you how the prices are going up next month? Wouldn't they want the lower paying clients out the door? All in all, this place is frustrating and a huge disappointment. A massage should be relaxing and this place is ANYTHING but that. Please, take your money elsewhere and don't get caught up in this trap.
If I could give negative stars then this would be my first. Shameful experience... -

Came here with a gift certificate, so I luckily didn't have to pay for it but the massage really wasn't anything worth going back for.
The place seems to me like the"supercuts"of massage places. Honestly the rooms don't have to have anything fancy to them as long as the massage itself is good. I think her name was Kim and she was nice but her touch felt like that of a students:-( I like there to be consistency and there wasn't any! The side she started would start Ok and then the other side would just get shorted.
The lights weren't very dimmed either so when I turned onto my back I could feel the brightness of the lights which is distracting.
I've been going to The Knot Stop which is a similar idea and will stick to it.
Oh...and when I went to check out they will push a membership on you which I turned down politely the first time I was asked but the girl proceeded to ask me why? Was it because of the cost? Commitment, time? I had to say no about 4 times and felt like I had to explain myself to her which made me feel an uncomfortable pressure to sign up. As if there is NO excuse for me to not to sign up for the membership! Get the hint after the 3rd NO!
I won't be back again even with a gift certificate, I'll just be re-gifting it! -

Massage Envy is a national chain with an emphasis on affordable massage. On the membership plan, I pay $59 a month for a one hour massage, then $39 for each additional hour massage. Two hour massages are also a bargain at $79. Your first trial massage is $39 for an hour. With the low cost one can expect some aesthetic differences than what regular spa visitors might be accustomed to at the more swanky outfits. This is bare-bones massage.
The good: affordable massage, fairly easy to schedule appointments, semi-convenient locations scattered around San Diego.
The bad: sometimes the massage is good, sometimes just average. at the Point Loma location I have noticed the behind the counter staff discussing their weekend, work problems, customer problems and other inappropriate topics while customers were nearby.
Advice: ask the staff which therapists have been there the longest. ask which therapists get the most repeat business. ask for what you want during your massage (turn the music down, more pressure, etc). i've found a couple good therapists and schedule my appointments in advance according to their availability.
If you're looking for just a massage at a reasonable price, this is the place for you. If you are looking for more of the "spa" experience and don't mind paying the premium for better therapists, a more pleasing environment, and more professional staff, I'd recommend you stick with the other boutique spas. -

I went twice to the one in Rancho San Diego and they were pretty good, except for the person that said she used to work for my mom and my mom fired her! This was while I was undressed, on the table and unable to leave. This dummy did acupuncture and it made my foot numb for three months!!!!! I didn't even bother complaining because I have foot problems anyway.
So, after that, I tried the Point Loma one by my work. First time GREAT! Silvia is caring and professional and is the bomb. I bought the membership because of her. Guess so, she's always booked. Went back to Megan. Cold hands and didn't even try to warm them up! Smelled dirty and yawned multiple times during my massage. Acted lilke it was a chore and not something that she's been trained to do. I'll go back to RSD. -

The secret is in selecting a good massage therapist. Massage Envy seems to have a large staff and high turn over so find a veteran and schedule with that person each time. I've been to this location twice and I've yet to find my person. Both times it was ok but I will say the staff is friendly and therapists were not bad. The location is quiet and relaxing. I'm going to try a few more times until I get the right person.

My friend convinced me to go to Massage Envy vice another establishment that we had gone to before. I read all these reviews about 1/2 an hour prior to actually leaving for my massage. I must admit that I was reconsidering going after reading these reviews. I decided to continue on and to my surprise I had a great massage. My masseuse was Kim -- for such a small girl she packed power in her massage. Very good experience. Yes, I must agree that they really do a hard sell for the membership and yes, I did sign up for one. I wasn't really set on committing myself to a year membership but it does make financial sense if you plan on getting one or more massages a month. Just made a commitment to treat myself to a monthly massage. Oh, I heard Silvia was one of the best...I'll try to request her for my next appointment.

Massage Envy (ME) definitely has hidden gems. The upside is ME allows you to experiment with different massage therapists and different types of massages till you find something that suits your needs. The downside is there is a great deal of turnover - I've met a couple gems that I continue to see.
I was saddened by the recent departure of K. However, with much assurance from front desk - Janelle was recommended for her outstanding deep tissue and swedish. Whew! The hour flew by as Janelle patiently worked out my crazy deep knots. If you are looking for someone that can tame the built up tension and pain in your tired muscles - schedule some time with Janelle or ask the front desk for recommendations. -

Don't go to this place. Massage was mediocre at best. Place was like a turnkey shop run by robots. Then, after my massage, the front agent tried to hard sell me on all sorts of packages. I'm not kidding, the lady wouldn't give up on selling me something. She even went to the extent of looking up my friend's zip code, who was visiting in town, to sell her something closer to where she lives in NorCal! Any relaxation the massage did give me was worked out of my body by the time I was done dealing with the front desk agent's hard sell. I'm sticking to The Hidden Spa in OB - they're great.

Four Words Yelpers.... ASK FOR KIM NGUYEN!!!!!! I was nervous when I first saw her standing there at five foot nothing maybe 100lbs soaking wet, but her hands are magic. I felt so good after her massage. I love getting Swedish massages from her. She seems like she likes what she does. If you want a great massage at a great price from this place ask for her.

In reading all of the reviews here I can only be sorry I did not read them prior to going to Massage Envy. Received a gift card and went for what I thought was going to be a pleasant stress free massage.
Ok, I LOVED the massage. But you should know this is coming from a woman who has never experienced one in the past. SI really have nothing to compare it to. As soon as I walked in the door I could tell it was going to be a sales presentation before I left the building. Asking all kinds of questions like "How often would you like to get massages"? Ummmmm hello! I'm single and would really enjoy daily rub downs. So yeah, I was weak and had visions of $49 dollar monthly massages and said why not. Well, after adding in their tacky listed advised tipping guide, it really turns out to be $69. I'd love to know where they get their tip charts too. How do they get 10% of what I paid $49 to be a $20 tip?
Decided my budget was not ready for my monthly indulgence and cancelled my membership. Signed my lil form to cancel and was told I had 2 massages on "The Books". Because I hadn't been in a few months so I had 2 coming to me. So about 2 weeks later I decide to use up one of the massages I HAD PAID FOR! Come to find out by their friendly call to remind me of appointment, that I would be paying full price for my massage because my membership had cancelled. WTF?! She said because I didn't use up my 2 ALREADY PAID FOR massages on the books that I lost them. I was less than happy to say the least. How in the hell can you have taken my money and give that an expiration date? Its like a prepaid gift card. Its mine to use as I please. Than she was kind enough to throw in that when I signed the form the FINE PRINT told me just that. Hell, I wouldn't even have thought they would be so shady. I just wanted to make sure the membership was cancelled and my account wouldn't be debited anymore.
In closing... Their business practice is less than admirable or respectful and I absolutely wouldn't recommend this place to another soul. And if you get a gift card use it. Just don't by into their BS sales tactics like I did. Lesson Learned Ladies!!! -

This place is a good deal. Yeah, some therapists are better than others. So you better try some out till you find the one right for you. The hours are awesome. I would give it 3.5 stars if possible.
