Last night Gallery C in Hermosa Beach gave an opening party not just for art collectors, but for the whole damn neighborhood. It seemed like half of L.A. showed up. They literally rolled out a red carpet at the entrance. There was, in addition to the decent original art, free booze, whore's ovaries, and a spectacular mirimba band that completely stole the show. The gallery was packed with people so cool they were almost ice sculptures, well-dressed of course, just like one would expect at an opening reception, although I almost felt like it was SoHo rather than little old Hermosa Beach. One of the artists who is showing is the wife of Seinfeld's Jason Alexander - he was supposed to be there, but in that big crowd, who knows. The musicians, grinning as they played, were clearly having a great time, and had those cool ones tapping their feet and clapping their hands. Ric Alviso is the band's director: music from Zimbabwe for concerts, parties and special events. I know who I'll call if I ever plan a blowout rockin' big bash. http://www.masanga.com
