If you're like me and you love delis but hate the prices... you'll love Marv's.
Marv's is a mom n pop deli that has the same great deli sandwiches you love to get at Canter's, Al's, et al --- but cheaper!
Their sandwiches on rye are great - pastrami, corned beef, turkey, brisket - all great with great portions.
Good coleslaw, too. Their house soup is a chicken/matzo/noodle combo - it's salty, but since I like salt, I'm a fan.
Small joint - we normally take it to-go.
Why pay more at other, overpriced delis? Eat at Marv's! -

Just before Christmas weekend I decided to forgo a pizza for a pastrami. Sorry I did. Don't know exactly what happened, but it did. Herman was nowhere to be found. His wife came out of the back and threw together my meal. Pastrami on rye with mustard. Let me tell you this. It was not a well made sandwich. The meat was sliced thick, and I now believe by a knife, rather than the meat slicer, it was cold as a corpse, and I think it was leftover meat left lying around from a previous sandwich. Tough ends, about 1/4" thick, cold, and salted to death. Off day perhaps? But when I pay $11.50 for a lunch sandwich, it better be at least good. I won't be back. Canter's here I come-- at least they care enough to get it right.

Tried this place for the first time and it certainly won't be the last. We stopped here on the way home and craved sandwiches. I seriously did NOT want to eat at the same place he wanted to go (which is the same place he gets food at least 3x a week) so I suggested let's pick another place. I looked up the reviews and we chose this place as it was on the way home from North Hollywood.
We were greeted with the owner Marv and the lady (who I believe is his daughter). Marv told us a little about his business and the history especially since it was our first time there. I ordered a roast beef and turkey sandwich with cheese on a french roll. OMG it was heavenly good and one of the best sandwiches I've had in a LONG time. The lady at the counter who waited on us also brought over samples of their corned beef and beef brisket. He LOVED the beef brisket and I loved the corned beef. With that, we ordered another sandwich to go for us to eat later with both of those meats.
A couple of quick notes when ordering: they do charge extra for french roll and they charge extra for cheese (as their meat sandwiches do not include cheese).
Well Marv, you got a new fan in me and if I'm in the area, I gotta have one of your sandwiches again. Thank you guys for the great small town sort of service that you rarely find in a big city. -

Hells yeah. This is my new weekend lunch spot. It literally takes 5 minutes to get here from my new apartment. When I walked in, I was given a warm greeting by Herman the German, the second owner of Marv's Deli. He is an awesome dude with incredible enthusiasm.
I decided to order the Hot Corned Beef on Rye with a side of potato salad.
Hot Corned Beef on Rye: (5/5) The meat was incredibly moist and packed with flavor. Herman did not skimp on the meat portion. The bread was lathered with mustard and russian dressing and cheese. What a perfect sandwich. It's definitely on par (or possibly better) than Brent's.
Potato Salad: (5/5) Great and balanced mix of potatoes, mayo, and vegetables. the perfect compliment to a perfect sandwich.
Hot Beef Brisket: (6/5) Yes, I said 6/5. This sandwich is THAT good. After I ordered my sandwich, Herman goes, "here you go mah friend, this brisket is gonna melt in your mouth." Sure enough, the brisket was the best I have ever had. It was so incredibly tender that it blows your mind with every bite. Amazing. -

Not only will "Herman the German" make you a delicious deli sandwich, he will almost certainly engage you in a conversation or make a corny comment to boot. This is one of the only decent places to eat lunch in a somewhat desolate area of Valley Village. I love the matzo ball soup and it's only $4 compared to rip-off prices of other deli's. You will be entertained and fed well at Marv's.

Couldn't quite give it Five Stars, but it's definitely worth writing about.
The Brisket was absolutely to die for. At the first couple bites I was thinking "Eh, overrated", but found myself urning for bite after bite. I'd walk away to do something and get this urge that would tell me "I NEED ANOTHER BITE... AND I NEED IT NOWWWWW."
In addition, the fact that it's a true mom & pop shop makes me appreciate it even more. It's important, for the sake of community, that we as consumers go out of our way to support places like this...
The only dent in the Marv's car is the prices. I understand folks have to make a living, but 9.50 for a sandwich & 2.50 for a soda is a little pricey... That said, they take care of their customers! And THAT is reason alone to go to this joint (fortunately, not the only reason though).
Go. Eat. Be happy. -

Angelenos rag on the Valley, but I'm still waiting for the part that sucks.
Today, I was introduced to Marv's and discovered yet another amazing place in this much-derided part of town.
It looks like they make everything right there - the pickles, the coleslaw, the potato salad - and the meat is sliced fresh for your sandwich. The owners are cute enough to put in your pocket, and the woman was not only sweet enough to serve our corned beef sandwich on two separate plates, but she gave us both our own sides and our own pickles. No charge.
While we were waiting for our food, some guy shouted to the owner on his way out the door, "THIS IS THE BEST BRISKET I'VE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE!!"
"The best brisket in Los Angeles?" the owner replied.
"IN MY LIFE!"
I totally get that enthusiasm.
Keep ragging on the Valley. More for me, suckas.Listed in: Why I Love the Valley. There,…

I have been going to this small Deli for years and they never fail! Owned and ran by a man (Marv possibly : ) and woman, they always remember me, are very friendly and we chat.
Absolutely THE BEST Brisket Sandwich ever!!! A hot, tender, juicy, flavorful experience for the mouth. One side and pickles come with the sandwich, I prefer the Potato Salad. The Mushroom Barley Soup is also quit good and they have a variety of Dr. Browns sodas to choose from. You can eat there or take it to go. Delish!
They are open until 6pm Monday - Saturday, closed Sundays.

This mom & pop eatery has some of the best Brisket in the San Fernando Valley. The chicken Noodle soup is excellent. Herman and Donna are like characters out of a Sitcom, very friendly and customer service oriented. Best of all the price of the lunch special- soup, sandwich, pickles, drink and your choice of side is far less than what you would pay at the two other nearby overpriced deli's in the area.

If you've got a soft spot in your heart for meat on bread (and the clogged arteries to prove it) this place just might hit it. I've lived all of two blocks away for over a decade and didn't even know it was there 'til recently. Today, torn between the five minute ride to the oh-so delicious Vicious Dogs and a burst of the lazies, I started Yelping with the ole iPhone, and in no time had my happy medium. Warm meat on bread just a stone's throw from my house.
A half hour later, and one Brisket on a French roll w/mayo, mustard, salt, pepper and some sliced Swiss sitting in my belly (along with some FANTASTIC black peppered cole slaw), I can say without reservation that Herman's claim to the best Brisket Sandwich in the Valley would be hard to argue. I'm officially a fan, and I'll definitely be back.
Marv's is not the biggest, baddest deli around; the selection of meats and cheese is not incredible, and the decor is 1960's no-frills at its dingy best. Nor is it a "OMG-this-has-got-to-be-the-best-bargain-in-the-Va lley" deli for cheapskates (the above sandwich set me back $12). Rather, it's one of those rare Mom & Pop operations churning out quality product for those in the know. And now I do, and you do too. So if one day you find yourself with a meaty spot just waiting to be hit, then by all means... [INSERT JOKE HERE]. -

Very good food, with quality ingredients. I had Pastrami and she had Corned Beef & Pastrami. They were both great.
Super Bonus, It's close to house & half the price of Art's or Jerry's and just as good if not better with a little kick of ma & pa store to give it that edge.
We will definitely be making this a regular destination. To bad they close at 6pm. -

Best deli sandwiches I've ever had. How does he make his meat so wonderful? The corned beef just melts in your mouth . . .
How lucky I was to live near Marv's and Joe Peeps.

I ordered the turkey with Russian dressing, spicy mustard and provolone cheese. The rye bread was nice and soft with a chewy crust. The bf got pastrami and Swiss on rye with Russian and mustard. Be prepared for a side of sauciness from Herman, the crotchety old guy that makes your sandwich. Drink selection kind of limited and the macaroni and potato salad were just okay. The pastrami was very heavy, fatty and delicious. $9.50 for the base sandwich add .75 cents for cheese. Very healthy portions...

I have been eating at Marv for over 25 years, My mother used to have the beauty shop next door, So when ever we were there we went to Marvs and ate. He is a great person, the sandwiches and other foods are great.
For Deli food, can't beat this place.
Every time I eat there I remember my mother and just how great being a kid was.
Don't miss eating here, you won't get the frills of the other places like Jerry's or Art, but you also won't pay the 'HIGH PRICES' either -

Where are the standards in this town? Why can prepackaged meat get 5 stars if it's served from behind an old smiling face? This is the same plastic wrapped ball of turkey the grocery store slices for you!
$24 for two sandwiches is NOT cheap!!
Pastrami was NOT even half as good as Oinkster! I would drive there 10 times before I paid $9.50 for a bad pastrami (not even cooked long enough) from here again. -

Marv's is a small, one-man&woman operation, local Deli that has been open for 55 years. I eat here fairly regularly, not only because Marv serves absolutely the BEST brisket sandwich in the world, but because I want ALSO to support good little mom-and-pop neighborhood businesses like this one so that they don't fold in the shadow of such corporate mediocrity such as a Jerry's Famous Deli.
Marv's is totally no frills simple and basic old-style neighborhood deli; the hot sandwiches and home made soups to die for. The decor is original 1950s - 60s, having never been remodeled, including the checkerboard linoleum floor. The proprietor (Herman?) and his wife (?) do it all, themselves, every day (except Sunday), including the home made soup. But, be aware that they close at 6:00 pm and are never open later, so it is lunch or grab an early sandwich on the way home from work. Well worth the effort.
I am not kidding about the brisket. The best you will eat in your life. Good as it gets. His slow-cooked meats (brisket, pastrami, corned beef) are superb. I am particularly partial to the brisket (can you tell?). Mouth watering melt-in-your-mouth succulent brisket piled high on real Jewish rye, with side of potato salad or yummy slaw and two delish dill pickle quarters. AND, the sandwich is only $9.50! A bargain. Simple, delicious, beautiful! Go. Now. -

I JUST finished eating the pastrami sandwich from this place.
WOW is an understatement. Had this and the corned beef (popped my cherry) and it didn't do it for me cuz the JUICY and Flavorful taste of the pastrami overtook my taste buds. I had it on POTATO bread, which was soft and chewy. A huge fan of the french roll, but wasn't really digging it as much as the regular bread. Their macaroni salad was really good (kinda sweet), and LOVED the cole-slaw (garlicy and DELISH). Oh, yeah, the mustard they put with the pastrami was awesoooooooooome. It complemented the juices of the pastrami with a nice touch.
Looking forward to trying the brisket sandwich. And am a bit surprised there are only 10 reviews of this place. -

You have to go to New York to get corned beef that comares to Marv's. Drive past Art's and Jerry's and give it a try. I went back after 30 years to check it out and although all the photos of celebrity's are gone and the three to four counter guys (at any given time of day) are gone, the corned beef and pastrami sandwich are still as great as I remember. A classic Jewish deli.

You REALLY can't beat this place.
Brisket melts in your mouth.
The tuna fish sandwich is exceptional.
Chicken noodle soup with matzo balls cures ANYONES swine flu.
Get ready for amazing food and maybe even a few laughs from the deli man. He's pretty funny if you catch him when he's in a silly mood! -

After reading the Yelp reviews I decided to give Marv's a try. I had been craving a good pastrami sandwich (since I gave up on Jerrys Deli - overpriced and the quality has really gone down). I have passed this place hundreds of times and thanks to Yelp I now have a place to go for a good sandwich.
Very, very good pastrami...I did not care for the brisket - so the 4 stars is for the pastrami on rye. The macaroni salad was good (if a bit sweet) and they were very nice - even gave me free coleslaw (which was good). -

Hands down the best deli in the valley. I've tried Brent's and other places, and this place takes the crown. I've only tried the brisket and corned beef and both were out of this world. I'm looking forward to trying their combo toungue sandwiches and pastrami.

The neighborhood mom and pop spot. Get the corned-beef/pastrami sandwich's or the most AMAZING soup(s). I go late in the day most times [or whenever I don't feel like paying $38 at Jerry's for the same thing] as this place just makes me feel good for some reason. Definitely nurturing in that home kinda way. I go weekly and double time it usually when I'm sick or such. Great, great people run this place...Learn to know them.

It had been over 20 years since I have visited Marv's Deli in Valley Vliiage. After receiving the 6th "Best Deli in LA" award from LA magazine, I decided to drop by for lunch. The brisket sandwich on an onion roll was INCREDIBLE, and so much better than the one's I've had at Solley's, Jerry's or Canters. Herman (who I think took over the deli from Marv and Shirley years ago) has continued the tradition of outstanding Jewish deli, as good (or better) than anything else you can find in LA!!

If you are looking for a great straight-up deli sandwich and good customer service, go to Marv's. I had the turkey (mustard, mayo and cheddar) The meat was so tender and piled high. There aren't many options for fillings and cheese and tomato are extra, which is disappointing. However, they did throw in an extra side of coleslaw and extra pickles. And I had a $20 for a 10.95 ticket and she gave me 10 back and said "you'll be back" She's right, we will be back!

Okay. Let me start out by saying that if you are nit picky, you may question the 5 star status because of the atmosphere. But trust me. Their food is AMAZING!!!! They have the MOST amazing Corned Beef!!!! So you don't like the looks of theplace??? Get your food To Go! It's real food, served by real people. The wrapper on the sandwich says it well: FOR A HAPPY BELLY, COME TO MARV'S DELI. Yum!

Herman really knows his stuff, very good deli meats, bread, etc. Not as famous as the others, and maybe not as PC, but I came here for the food. Not as pricey as Art's, but better food.Parking is easy, atmosphere is relaxed and homey. Wanna see Hollyweird stars, go to Art's. They do nothing for me, but good food does.

Review from Steve Y.
Sherman Oaks, CA
This is a hard review to write. Do I judge this deli based on all delis around the country or just the delis in LA? This deli would pale in comparison to the greats of NYC, but in LA this one stands tall. The hot pastrami sandwich is average, somewhat chewy and leaves those who've experienced the best wanting more flavor, more delicateness in the meat, better quality bread and mustard. But for those who've never been to an NYC deli, you'll probably think it's the best sandwich you've ever had. So it's all relative. In NY, I'd get this 3 stars, but since this review is for LA stomachs only and maybe a few tourists, I'm going to give it 4, especially since the service is so friendly, feels neighborhoody, and is next door to the Irish import shop. So when you're finished with your lunch, head next door and treat yourself to an amazing European Cadbury bar. The chocolate tastes so much better. Crunchies are the best.

My husband and I walked over to Marv's based on the Yelp reviews and, once again, the reviews were right on target. The place is immaculate, which is much more important to me than any fancy decor. As stated in other reviews, it's a mom-and-pop joint with great service and deli food which is much fresher and more satisfying than Jerry's any day! We had the pastrami on rye with mustard, turkey protein style, side of slaw, side of potato salad, homemade chicken soup, and a scoop of the tuna. Everything, even the pickles and condiments, were yummy with a capital "y"! Another reviewer mentioned the prices. My hubbby and I both thought compared to Jerry's and other mediocre large delis, Marv's prices were better and for much better food. We're having our NY family and friends come in for the holidays and will definitely be bringing them to Marv's or maybe have Marv's cater (or both)!

After a Google search looking for great pastrami in Los Angeles (particularly the Valley) we decided to try Marv's since it was so close and the Yelp reviews were very positive. We got our lunch to go, and ate at home.
The place definitely looked dated, but very clean. Marv's has been in the same location for over 50 years, but they're doing something right with the food.
We got sandwiches, - pastrami on rye and corned beef on egg bread. Both were outstanding. Marv's doesn't mess around - there was so much meat on our sandwiches we had enough to make another set of sandwiches for dinner with the leftovers. The potato salad was also excellent.
We've already started telling friends and family about Marv's, and we were so pleased with the food that we'll definitely be coming back for more. We're looking forward to trying the brisket, the soup and the knishes too.
Another pleasure at Marv's of which to take note: their case of bottled sodas has a nice selection for being a bit of a hole-in-the-wall. We each grabbed Dr. Brown's sodas today, but look forward to trying other new drinks in the future as well. -

Home made soup just like the good old days personel service from the owners and always a extra comment or two. $9:50 for a really FAT sandwich including side salad and real dill pickel. High quality and made right behind the counter by Herman or his wife real funny people. Forget Jerry's this is the BEST for less!

Moved out here from NY a year ago and have been searching for a good deli ever since. Just got back from my first Marv's trip. The corned beef and pastrami on rye was fantastic and much cheaper than the other delis in town (Art's, Jerry's). Plus it's always better to support a mom and pop shop. Definitely will be going back here.
