Over the years I forgot about the awesomeness of Marukai. Then my special somebody drove back just to surprise me with lunch from this place. After a long goodbye, it's even harder saying it twice, he really left for his long drive back home.
Their sushi box which had an assortment of 6-7 things were all fresh and yummy. I also enjoyed their croquette sandwich with super soft bread and a perfectly breaded potato croquette. My sandwich was missing something, protein came to mind. So I cooked a few slices of ham to fold in and voila, even better. For dessert, my annis tofu was smooth and cool with a light mango flavor. It was very subtle in sweetness and had me savoring each bite. Their strawberry shortcake had a whipped texture, fluffy. The strawberry slices were mixed in with super soft cake crumbs on top.
Fast forward a month and I was craving their sushi and strawberry shortcake. I got their spicy tuna and strawberry shortcake for under $8. They offer decent sushi at a great price. Their desserts are light, delicious, and inexpensive. I'm coming back soon for more of both. -

Good small food court. Good grocery of japanese and hawaiian stuff. Gifts as well. Short review for 5 stars, but I have nothing to complain about. There is a health and beauty section, all of that. They have plenty of parking. Weeabos and/or Japanese natives would likely enjoy this place a lot. I go for the food.
Kaukau Corner in the food court makes me drool.
Plenty of parking in their lot. It seems Yelp wanted to know that below. -

I'm new to Japanese markets , since I'm now dating a Japanese man ( Well half Japanese half German). I'm very curious about this culture. I simply love the food and this market has become one of my favorite.
I recently bought a Japanese hair smoother/shine here. It was pricey but I love how it makes my hair feel and look.
We also come here at least once a week for the Bento Box. These are the best ! Great prices for quick meals that are located in the deli area.
The store is small compared to the local supermarkets but has so much to offer. Meats and Veggies are fresh. Sushi is made daily. Oh and I just love the Spam Musubi ! It's an authentic Japanese market. They even have a Hello Kitty section ! Gotta love the Kitty! Meow ! -
Review from Ed L.
I came here looking for japanese noodles to make Hiyashi Chuka. Ever since I had the Hiyashi Chuka at Ozumo, I've been craving it, and since I haven't had a chance to go back yet, I decided to try to make it for myself. I was able to find the dried Hiyashi Chuka(which looks like ramen noodles, but can be made more al dente than ramen), and I found some cold, more fresh Hiyashi Chuka. Score! I bought pork belly, veggies, eggs, and some soy/wasabe vinaigrette.
I was worried the cashier would reject me saying I needed a membership card, but fortunately you don't need a membership here. I made a mental note to come back to try some of the sashimi grade tuna I saw in the back.
The store was small, but clean, had all the japanese essentials and even a refrigerated section for meat and fish(everything looked fresh). Not much produce though.
I made the Hiyashi Chuka(japanese summer noodles, literally translated: Chilled Chinese) for dinner. Easy E loved it, and I thought it tasted pretty good, not as good as Ozumo, but good enough to satisfy my craving. Friends are coming over this weekend for dinner and I told my wife I wanted to make it, and she told me that while it was good, it wasn't good enough for guests. I appreciated her honesty, and turned away to put my bowl in the sink lest she see the stinging tears welling up in my eyes.
Nevertheless, I'll be back at the Marukai for more of the cold, fresh Hiyashi Chuka noodles, and to try the sashimi. -

This is like a mini-Marukai. I guess I'm just used to the mother Marukai in Gardena. This Torrance location does the job for purchasing the basics. I do like the fact that the bookstore is connected. Staff are nice and the place isn't too busy.

Review from Sammy B.
Marukai. You have staved me from hunger, and prevented me from consuming bland food so many times, I cannot even thank you generously enough for your support and valor.
This marketplace is like a lunch break treasure chest. Unlike a Mitsuwa, this Marukai lacks a food court. However, this is a grocery store that seems to be 90% stocked with food and drinks. Sure, they have a book store that takes up one entire wing, and a cosmetic section near the entrance, but you're really here for the food.
They have plenty of prepackaged dishes and bentos ready for consumption right in the cooling-circle-refrigerator-thingy near the entrance. Aside from a few bentos here and there, almost all the food is under $6. You can get delicious chicken rice, glazed in a sweet tomato sauce, a piece of sunny side egg, steamed cabbage, and hot dog for $4. You hold that plate in your hand and you think, "This is some heavy ****." They have onigiri that is only $1, along with spam musubi. They sell takoyaki, yakisoba, gyuniku don, katsu don, salmon bento, chicken meatballs, soba, E. Honda, Ryu, Ken, Chun Li, Blanka. Just incredible.
Also, if you look to the sides, there is an independently operated Japanese bakery that make some delicious bread. Coming from a Korean background, I always thought Japanese breads were a bit pricey. But if you get a chance to, try the blueberry French toast that they sell for $1.80. It is absolutely divine. It is both moist, yet firm and every bite is like inhaling the atmosphere of vaporized wonderment.
Although I haven't had a chance yet, there is a sushi operated stand adjacent to the bakery stand. I have taken a look at their sushi and it looks all good. The sushi had brightly colored flesh and firm shape, both incredible if you think of what prepackaged sushi looks like in markets. They must be made fresh within a few hours since there is a sushi chef there. I saw one salary man eating some sushi, and I started salivating on the spot. Definitely not the most attractive, or normal, thing to do in a market.
Overall, the pricing is great, the selection is great, and the people are great. This place is great! Go here and have a great day! -

Kinda torn on how to review this place. It's more of a 3.5 or 3.75, but a 3 seemed too harsh.
My brother used to be stationed in Okinawa and he used to ship us back pizza chips, Kitto Katsu (Japanese Kit Kats), Oreo candy bars, etc. We haven't been able to find those items anywhere. Since I was in Redondo, mom and I decided to give this place a shot. It's small, but well stocked. We were able to find Kitto Katsu in a few flavors and sizes. Their drink selection is pretty great - it goes beyond just ramune sodas and Calpico. I was able to find quite a few UCC Coffee drinks. They had a ton of candy and sweets - One whole aisle and two endcaps.
The cashiers all spoke English, which is a plus. Like many other Yelpers, I was asked if I had a membership card, which I didn't. The cashier told me I couldn't get the sale price, but didn't say how to get a card. I didn't see any forms on the counter to fill out.
Kinda bummed that my mom grabbed a bag of mini cacao Kitto Katsus on our way to the register. They didn't have a price, but it was a small bag. Turns out it was $6! Lame. I was bummed that they didn't have many of the special seasonal items that Japanese stores get - cucumber Pepsi, special Pringles, etc. They might be too expensive to import, though.Listed in: LA's Best Sweet Spots

This is one of smaller Marukais I have been to. I usually just swing by to grab an asian snack since they dont have a large selection. There are a couple little asian restaurants all jammed in there (A bakery, and a sushi something or other). Occasionally they have a little food cart outside that I have been meaning to try.

Review from Lucy P.
This market has only a decent selection of Japanese and other Asia import items. It's okay to pick up a few staples such as nori, seasoning, short grain rice, instant bowl ramen noodles, and sweets. However, the selections of food, especially the frozen items and small kitchen items are very limited in variety.
They have already made sushi, yaki onigiri (yum) and nori onigiri and already made sandwiches. They also have a small number of tables where one can dine on the premade food there.
I'm not sure if I would go back due to their small selection of items. The store appeared to be very clean, the cashiers were friendly, and parking is ample. The market itself however, is very mediocre. -

this marukai is smaller, but still has enough of the essentials.
i really like the to-go sushi (quite tasty for market sushi!) and the pre-made hawaiian goodies are yummy - especially the duck bao. SO GOOD!
i live in fullerton, but go out to torrance about 2x/week, so i finally bit the bullet and bought a year-long membership, which is worth it for the savings! -

One of my go-to spots for lunch during the work week!
I work a couple blocks from this place and i usually end up going here to pick some sushi 1-2 times a week. the sushi is pretty good, not the greatest..but good. theres even a takoyaki truck sometimes parked outside..awesome. (had it today =] )
Its a small market but they do have all ur general japanese market stuff..including all the little snacks and candies that everyone loves~
hm..anyways..if u enjoy japanese markets..definitely a good place to stop by and check out. they even have their own japanese bookstore~ -

OK, this isn't the review for Marukai but for Mammoth bakery.
Was I not feeling good today? Tuna Sandwich I bought
from Mammoth bakery today was horrible. Bread was okay
but the tuna part tasted nasty. Don't get me wrong, I didn't get food poisoning or anything. I'm sure it was fresh but I just didn't like the taste. I also bought what was labeled as grape jelly. It had pieces of grapefruits in it. I love grapefruits but they should've peeled the white skin off of them, it was really uncomfortable chewing the skin. Ugh... -

I USED TO WORK HERE LOL.
This place is cool though.
They have tons of good bentos, and it gets prettttty busy during the lunch hour!
They have the sushiyasan..which all of the customers LOVE. They can't stop talking about how good the sushi is. They also have a bakery which I thoroughly enjoyed :) Got some free sweets sometimes, and it was delicious! I recommend their raspberry cream cheese pan I think it was haha.
It's really small compared to the Gardena Marukai, but still a place to get all the groceries you really need. Of course, not many appliances are sold here, but you may be able to find small things.
The staff, they're all nice :) and I miss them. -

I added a star after returning and finally getting the skinny on how to get a club card. Of course I quickly retracted that star back to a 3 after being told I needed to pay for the club card. However we left our peaches on the counter and the cashier chased after us with them, so I gave them back the star for customer service.

Hoping to surprise your love or friends with a FUN, inexpensive, healthy, DIFFERENT "dinner experience" at HOME? All you need is boiled water. Seriously. Check out this awesome Asian Market. G**gle "shabu shabu" and you'll learn more of this process. As you enter, go left till end, make right, go to end, look left... meat counter. Grab the FRESHLY packaged meats for SHABU SHABU (both beef and pork, different grades and prices). Grab all the the vegetables, sauces and tofu you'll need (I told you to g**gle shabu, yes?). Go home, boil water, throw in veggies, then swirl the meats to cook in seconds with chop sticks. You are SURE to impress, and you WILL do this again. Bet ya'?

Best Japanese Super Market! This is the place to buy Japanese grocery. Better selection than other Japanese Market like Mitsuwa and Nijiya.

Review from Maggie C.
I used to think that Marukai is more fun than Mitsuwa. The only thing I don't like about this place is the membership thing. It's cheap for $10/year but why do you have to pay to shop? Is this a Japanese Costco? As a member you can buy some promotional items at a discounted price.
Marukai has my favorite bakery (Mammoth Bakery-see my review) so I like coming to this market. I also get my fix for kiwi juice from this juice place next to Shinsengumi noodle. DHC Cosmetics, Beard Papa's cream puff, Aoyama Cafe, Shinsengumi noodle and yakitori, a sushi place, a katsu place and a bento place are also there. Not too many seats at the food court like Mitsuwa but it's good enough.
I like hanging out at Marukai looking for cosmetics, drinks or snacks. My newest favorite thing there is this Pokka jasmine tea in a can. There's also a small book store that sells Japanese books & magazines. They also have free ice for the seafood you buy there. Mitsuwa and Marukai sell similar items. Mitsuwa constantly trying to improve itself but not Marukai.
4 stars!! I am still a fan but I don't go to Marukai as often now.Listed in: Fun Japanese Places, Beauty & the Beast, Re-Ment

Gardena, CA
This review is for the sushi stand inside of Marukai
Mori-Zo Kaisendon Sushi makes the best sushi bowls (kaisendon) in town. I was a faithful customer when they were at the Pacific Square Murakai in Gardena. Then they left and I thought it was gone forever but to my excitement they moved to the Torrance branch.
The fish is fresh, their amount of high quality fish that he puts on the chirashizushi is simply second to none in the South Bay area. Did I mention that they are made to order so when you eat it the rice is still pleasantly warm. My wife loves their sushi sets as well!
Don't let the fact that its a small counter inside of a grocery store detour you. Frankly the sushi here is better than those from some established restaurants in the South Bay.
This is the only reason we go down to the Torrance Marukai! -

Ventured into this new market the other day. Great selection of foodstuffs from fresh vegetables, meats and dairy products to a variety of ready made foods for those on the go.
Great place to grab a quick bite as they have lots of prepared japanese bento (japanese lunch box) and sushi packs! They also have a great selection of desserts such as cakes and freshly baked breads. I particularly like the fresh baked raisin breads made right on the premises. Awesome to sit at the tables near the bakery enjoying the raisin bread whilst washing it down with a strong cup of espresso! -

I just renewed my membership here yesterday now that I am shopping here more often. Mostly I buy individual little microwavable rice bowls because I hate dealing with my rice cooker for just a couple cups of rice. I also buy random things that look good.
I need to come to the Gardena one with someone that can tell me what the hell half of the stuff is. :) -
Review from Matthew M.
Redondo Beach, CA
If the store were a lot more bigger and included more variety of stuff, it would have earned a 5 stars rating.
Otherwise, I love this market. It specialize in Japanese stuff. There's a few small stall that's separated from the market itself, a sushi deli, a bakery, and a book store.
Some staff are quite friendly, mom and I asked one of the workers to explain to us how to eat the saitoimo (I'm not sure about the spelling) he tried to explain it to us, but English isn't his strongest suit, so he asked one of the nice, sweet Japanese shoppers. She explained with no difficulty. The guy added after we gathered a few into a bag, "No drink water. Turn you sick." That was so sweet of him.
Other staffs... eh... I think some of them have some insecurities with the language barrier, so it seem they try to limit all conversations to business.
Otherwise, I'm very fortunate to live in an area where there is a very good amount of diversity and their demands for something from their homeland. Los Angeles Metro rocks.Listed in: Del Amo Fashion Center

A great place to go for convenience! Small easy to navigate grocery store with great prices for yummy Japanese food! They do not carry as much as the super big Marukai on Artesia of course but they are great for a quick shopping trip for the Japanese basics. They also have a cute little beauty and vitamin section that is awesome!
When you are there be sure to check out the book store! They have great magazines even if you cannot read Japanese they are fun to look at! This is also a great place to find fun unique gifts! -

This review is for the bakery side only.
I love their strawberry danish and the creme cheese danish.. SO good...
i think the rest of the grocery is kind of overpriced. i know they have members-only discounts but i think its some sort of annual membership.
I guess worth it if one shops their grocery side items on a weekly basis.
on sundays there has been a beard papa's stand in the front of the store. awesome!!!!!!! it was cash only so i had to drive to a nearby drugstore and get cash-back so i could pick me up a buncha theese confections! -

Maruki's one of the best asian supermarkets ever! Everytime I go to Pizza Hut (which is in the same strip mall), I try to go and get some MOCHI at this particular Marukai. Also, this place carries MILD SEVEN ciggarettes if you're into all that.
Other great things they have here that they usually have cool specials on are the HI-CHEW, YAN-YAN, POCKY, etc. Lines get long, BUT the cashiers are pretty cool and fast when you pay for your stuff. This is also a great place to get orchids for your significant other at a reasonable price.Listed in: My Personal Favorites (NO…

Never too crowded, conveniently located, parking always available.
For around $2 you can get delicious seaweed salad, instant curry, or tofu
For less than $5 you can get some salmon or tuna sashimi, or some crunchy teriyaki seaweed to snack on. There's a little sushi shop and bakery inside that's cash only. A good size bookstore next door if you can read Japanese.
The last time I went they had a little stand in the front selling giant cream puffs that they fill right in front of you. If you run into them, don't miss the chance to grab one for $1.50 It was delicious. -

Marukai -- This place is big, bruddah -- I MEAN B. I. G. A superstore of goodness.
An oasis in the desert for any displaced Kamaaina. The fresh seafood is king brah. We buy fresh fish and here and cut our own sashimi when we get home. Marukai is filled with Japanese and Hawaiian delicacies, products, you name it.
I love the Hawaiian section -- Portuguese sausage, Portuguese bean soup and Zippi's chili -- need I say more.
You'll also find tasty already prepared Japanese and Hawaiian dishes, commercial and local Japanese and Hawaiian snacks (passion orange juice, guava jelly, macadamia nuts, arare rice crackers, sushi and plate-lunch style bento - all wrapped and ready to go - baked goods - you name it.
I buy my sake here too. They also have cookware, knick knacks, a health section. This place rocks.
Marukai also has furniture upstairs and an cool eatery for sushi, Hawaiian food, etc. downstairs.
It's not as clustered as it use to be since they've rearranged the aisles
I love to go to Marukai and just moke out and bus' out the Pidgin English. GEEV 'EM BRUDDAH

Gardena, CA
I shopped here out of curiosity. Is it a Marukai grocery store or a convenience store? It appears to be a mix and I'm not sure they have laid out the place to satisfy the bulk of the customers. Meaning, did they think of frequent shopper's needs or did they target younger fly by night customers? This place skews towards infrequent shoppers going after immediate needs (And they may be successful at it, I'm not knocking their tactic, just an observation from frequent shopper's view if you will).
It has little bit of everything it seems but some of the items that I went there for are not carried by this location.
Such as: Slim sea food section (no Blue Fin Tuna either).
No gallon jug of water (expensive to buy bunch of small bottles).
The Kirin Black Tea only comes in single serving size (no 1.5L bottles).
For me this is good for an occasional quick stop but not to load up on week's worth of groceries.
Disappointing was the smaller container sizes on basic items. Even liquor stores carry gallon jugs of water for example. Overall I'd end up spending more here on basic necessities.
The store was spanking clean though and the service friendly. -

Lots of variety. I love origami and they had the best paper there. I also bought sushi the reason I went there. Sushi was reasonable and fresh!
The line wasn't a great wait. It's $1 a day membership now and $10 for a year. So we opted for the year. Since our senior citizen parents were there with us we got a 50% discount and only had to pay $5.00 for membership.
What can I say? A parking lot, fresh fish, discounts, and best of Japanese food and variety of Japanese and Asian life. Not bad, huh?
It's conveniently located as a chain for me. -

Super convenient to my place, and much less crowded than the other Marukai stores. I do have membership since I shop here so much and they often have great deals, but this particular location allows you to shop without a membership card. Great for picking up items for Asian cooking and they carry a ton of Hawaiian products too (including frozen Zippy's chili!).
The store's size is a double-edged sword - while it's not as crazy to shop here as Marukai Marketplace, their variety of products can be lacking. My husband is a big snacker, and he can't find his favorite brand of rice crackers here. They used to carry the canned coffees we liked too (Boss and UCC Kona), but recently they wiped out that shelf in the refrigerated section to carry some juices on promotion. Big bummer :( -
Review from Dennis L.
Has a lot of things you can't find at a typical grocery store. I'm not sure why they would put such a small Marukai so close to the very nearby Famima which really isn't that much smaller than this place.
The drinks, the bakery and the frozen foods from Japan are what make this place stand out to me. -

Great place to get some food. We usually come here after we've gone to the beach to get some sweet goodness. We usually get either some kind of chocolate cake or mango sorbet. They have a good selection of food, the most popular foods from the larger marukai in gardena.
i always find everything that i want. the have a fresh foods that are refrigerated, and a small amount of fish too. prices vary and can be a little bit more expensive but its the convenience. its a good place for quality food, and we definitely come here a lot. The place is always busy and staff are always friendly and helpful. -

Redondo Beach, CA
A new location for the forever expanding Marukai! I have to admit, I was kind of disappointmented the first time I stopped by, but now, I appreciate it.
First and for most, this is a small Marukai grocery store (compared to the Marukai in Gardena) with only 2 food vendors - a sushi place (sorry, can't recall their name, but the sushi was really good) and Mammoth Bakery (no baking on site, bread and pastry probably delivered? and selection is small). I haven't ventured to the book store, off to the side, but it appears to be pretty big, but not as big as the bookstore at Mitsuwa.
This feels like an expanded Famima or conbini. Not a place to do you Sunday grocery for a week, but a place you can just pop in to grab a few missing items. They carry alot of the standard items, and yes, snacks and drinks and prepared foods (I tried one of the chicken ? and it was ok). One thing I did notice is that if you want to buy any beer or osake, doesn't look like they have a liquor license?? I was craving some Japanese beer and was kind of disappointed when I ciricled around and around and couldn't find it.
I don't frequent the Marukai in Gardena as often, it's close but yet, kind of far to just ' grab' some stuff; Mitsuwa is a bit price and don't frequent Nijiya much, so not even a consideration. But in the past 2 weeks, I've been there 4 times!!!
I like it because it's close, convenient and ample parking. -
Review from Cait B.
The only reason this one has a 4 rather than a 5 is because the selection is not as large as a few of the other locations (Costa Mesa, Artesia). They do have a cash only sushi counter and a great bento selection if you get there before 6pm. It is the mini-me of Marukai! You complete me!

Average market. Maybe I have high expectations, but I have to say I wasn't in love as many of the other reviewers. Lacking in the veggies department. And they use a membership card that costs money to take advantage of discounts?! That's just wrong but doubly wrong because it's an Asian grocery store.. Sigh. One thing I did notice that was kinda cool is that they seem to have a very extensive book store. I cannot benefit from this because I don't read Japanese, but attention to those who do.
