18 reviews for Martino's Restaurant
Everyone has their own taste on pizza. I've never enjoyed deep-dish Chicago pizza. Never liked Giordano's, Pete's etc. My fiance and I went to Martino's last night, per a friend's recommendation.
Personally, I thought that Martino's pizza was perfect in every way. I don't like my pizza so full of shit that I feel like I'm eating a hot mess out of a dump truck, and I don't like my sauce as salty and rich as some of the stuff I've eaten in Chicago. This pizza had nice, thin crunchy crust, fresh, flavorful, and certainly not overdone toppings. The cheese was delicious and hot.
Our server was absolutely wonderful (I wish I knew her name). Our appetizers were great. The stuffed artichoke was tasty, but a little difficult to eat as the leaves were sort of tough. The stuffed mushrooms in Pesto were to die for. The place was immaculately clean, and at 9:30 on a Tuesday night, very pleasantly quiet. We will definitely go here again!!! An absolute new favorite.
I thought the portions were perfect, and the price was right. I thought 10 bucks for a small pizza (big enough for 2) was totally decent.
We have ordered from Martino's several times over the years, and found it to be fair at best. I find the pasta sauce to be so bland, so I stayed clear of ordering any.
Tonite I was too tired to cook, so we ordered from Martino's. Mom ordered a dinner salad, which was 3 dollars. When it came, it was like a cup of iceberg lettuce with a sliver of tomato. I had to cut up extra tomatoes to provide her a meal. I know you don't get alot for 3 dollars these days, but you get more from the Mac Donalds side salad for a dollar and it tastes better.
The rest of the order was fair. I don't think we will be ordering from here again. Too many good places to try.
Martinos is not very good. Yet it's one of our favorite restaurants.
Think nice, older place, maybe circa the '70s. i.e. clean, includes booths and tables, and a service bar at one end. It happens to be near where we live, which is why we started going -- but, no, that's not why we keep going back. The appeal: they have some very good menu items -- we love the caprisiosa pizza, eggplant parmasiana, and the neat seasoned crackers that come in the bread basket, probably cut out of pizza dough. But, to my taste, that's it.
Otherwise -- well, any Italian restaurant with bland pasta sauce is off to a bad start. Tonight, again, I took a wrong turn on the menu and ordered pasta del mare. It looked wonderful, heaped with shellfish, shrimp, scallops. But all overdone, and -- while I could have forgiven that -- there was no flavor in the pasta, none, and ....well, there it was again, that sorry, bland tomato sauce on top.
Maybe the tip-off is the clientele we saw when exiting: mostly the two ends of the spectrum: young families with kids (pasta's a safe choice!) and older adults with plain tastes. Yeah, we'll be back. But if you come, stick to pizza and recommended items.
Now everyone that knows me KNOWS I like my deep dish pizza. However, thanks to Martinos, I am now a little bit more closer to liking thin crust almost as much as deep dish. My aunt picked up a thin crust pepperoni pizza and brought it over to Swedish where my grandmother (RIP) was at when she was sick. It was about 10pm at night and maybe it was because I hadn't eaten all day,but it was soooooooooooooo good. The crust was crispy and the sauce was terrific, there was perfect amount of sauce . There was a ton of cheese which I will not complain about. Il be eating more martinos more often hellz yea!
My neighbor LOVES their minestrone soup... and it was her turn to choose restaurants, so she chose Martino's for our supper on Saturday.
She was right, the soup was delicious. Thick with beans and well seasoned.
We both tried to order the fish special, but the waitress steered us off of it...."it's fishy", she said. Wow! Thank you for your honesty, and when asked if it was fresh or frozen, she again replied truthfully, "frozen". In this great foodie city, there's no excuse for thawed Whitefish in my opinion....
My veal dish was tiny in size, and the sauce seemed to be thickened by some mystery substance. My neighbor's chicken pasta dish? I think the ingredients were, on their own, tasty, but again, I think the chicken was also frozen and thawed and had that freezer dryness....
Reasonable selection of beer and wine for what this place is.
It was full, and people seemed to be enjoying themselves.
Maybe I'll stick to the soup next time and try the pizza instead.
It saddens me to have to write such a poor review for Martino's, a favorite in my family since my Mom was young. But, alas. A tale of woe, heartache, and horrendous customer service...
Martino's was a stand-by in my family for larger gatherings (my grandparents loved it) as well as delivery (my picky-dickens little brother liked their cheese pizza). I'll admit, the pizza is nothing special (unless you order the thin-crust Margherita, which is really tops). However, the garlic sticks, pasta primavera, and minestrone soup are really out of this world. (Thick minestrone. Olive oil-garlic-veggies on the primavera.)
Martino's did this thing where you got a white coupon with every delivery, and if you collected 20 of them, you got a free medium cheese pizza. A gold star to anyone who can already see where this is going. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Well, my family cashed in on our share of cheese pizzas, and considering how many of these coupons we racked up over the years, we felt appreciated for our loyalty.
One night, we called to place an order and had in fact accumulated 20 white coupons. After ordering, my Mom informed the phone-girl that we had 20 coupons for a free cheese pizza. The girl blanched, then asked what color the coupons were. White, Mom told her. Uh oh. Turns out they're not doing white coupons anymore. Now they're doing pink coupons, and instead of one per any delivery, you only get one if your delivery includes a pizza. They don't accept white coupons anymore. We're told we need to start from scratch, collecting 20 pink ones. What.
My Mom explains that their evil coupon-change should be irrelevant, since we're obviously loyal enough to have patronized their restaurant at least 20 times, and had been collecting the coupons (which had no expiration date) for over a year. Phone girl gets a manager. What should be a cut-and-dry situation turns into a ridiculous argument, wherein the manager refuses to budge and my mother cancels our order, promising never to give them another dime.
None of us have given them another dime.
From what I hear, they're under new management or something (this was a few years ago, so maybe it was during the regime-change) and things have really gone downhill. It's so sad that considering how much money we poured into their establishment, they gave up our business and their reputation for the cost of a medium thin cheese.
What kind of cockamamie dive do you have to be running to not see that this was a bad business move? The second star is there only because I really, really miss their pasta primavera. Ah, the sacrifices we make...
the good: they open till midnight. Plenty of parking space. Thin crust Pizza is great. Garlic bread is garlicky good.
the bad: I've tried 3-4 dishes. Fettucini alfredo is dry and flavourless. So is Cod fish. A SUPER dry and plain baked potatoe. I felt like eating in a desert where evrything around me is dehydrated and my body was about to twist. Every bite from that baked potatoe continues to stuck in my throat.
I mean, stick with the pizza, seriously.
The stuffed is the bestest. Sauce is almost sweet, slices are filling. Try Martino's Special or around the world, its got a bit of everything around the pie.
Thin crust is excellent as well. This place is MUCH better than Lou Malnatti's or Giordano's! Yes.. I said much better. There stuffed is never soggy, almost always satisfying.
I don't ever sit in and eat. Had a few bad experiences that will stay with me FORever, waitresses have changed as of late. The inside is so outdated, as if you're eating at a restaurant in Pleasantville. Not really, lol.
(I coulda sworn I reviewed this place long ago, I wonder if it got pulled. Because of how something that affected a certain group of people was mentioned.)
Best Chicago-style pizza. That's stuffed pizza, kids.
Last night, along with our meal we ordered these things called "garlic sticks". Oh my...I have a new addiction. These light and crispy, garlicky and slightly cheesy strips of savory goodness are amazing! I bought only a half a pound since it was the first time we were trying them, but for not even half again the price you can get a full pound of these yummy treats. Which is what I will do, soon. To try them is to love them. *burp*

One of my favorite Italian places in the city! And I don't think it's because I grew up on their food.
Pizza is awesome, eggplant is awesome, any of the pastas are awesome, minestrone soup is awesome, pizza crust breadsticks are awesome....
I think you get the picture.
What I truly love about Martinos is the thin crust cheese pizza. Yummy and delicious. What I dont love or even like about Martinos is that their portions are super small and expensive. I find the food mediocre, at best. And the lady that owns the place is such a nasty lady. I really miss the Martinos of the old days when the look of the place was nothing special but the portions were decent and the food was good. I have no idea if the ownership was the same back then but they really have changed through the years. And not in a good way.
We order from Martinos when we want a good thin crust pizza delivered quickly. The pizza is good, and the delivery is quick. The prices are so-so for what you get, but everything is going up these days. I still enjoy their pizza, and it is a change from what we usualy get so I do recommend trying it.
Thin crust pizza is great. Open late. My family likes to pick up late on the weekends. What a treat.
This place holds special memories for me. When my sweetie and I first stated dating, we would order from here all the time. We would always get the same thing - mostaccioli with meatballs, salad and minestrone soup (our favorites). I also used to work right down the street so we came here during lunch. Great appetizers and a small, charming interior. Very nice staff.
I remember when Martino's used to make deep dish pizza--I don't know if they still have it on the menu. My family would order delivery from here--beats having to go to Lou Malnati's in Lincolnwood. We stopped after my mom insisted that the pizza we got was undercooked and too dough-ey, but I remember just being too hungry to care.
This is my favorite pizza place. When I lived in the neighborhood, I would order from Martino's at least once a week. Delivery was quick (I lived only a couple blocks from the restaurant). Food was slow to arrive when eating in the restaurant, but it was always good. I highly recommend the pizza here.
I had a pretty bad experience with delivery from this place. According to http://grubhub.com Martino's delivered to my boyfriend's old apartment. We called and they couldn't deliver that far, which is fine. Then once my boyfriend moved, we tried again and this time, they said they would deliver. Woo hoo. We ordered the Four-cheese stuffed pizza. It was decent but certainly not good enough to dignify the awful way in which the delivery guy treated me. I went down the three floors to get the pizza when he arrived. I open the door and he says "I don't have a pen" and it wasn't in an apologetic or even nice way at all. It was straight up rude, as if it was my fault he forgot the pen. He then came up with me to get the pen, again this would have been fine, if he didn't berate me about how far he had to drive to deliver us the pizza. "Do you actually know where Martino's is located?" is what he said in a tone that implied I was extremely stupid for even thinking to order from them. I explained that both the woman on the phone when I ordered and http://Grubhub.com was what gave me the impression they delivered to our area. He scoffed and laughed at me and said a very sarcastic "ohhh. Ok.".
So overall, the pizza was fine. The price was fine. The woman on the phone, really nice. The delivery driver? Totally mean guy who I should have stiffed on the tip. I guess hindsight is 20/20.
pretty awesome old-school italian place. i was somewhat trepid about this place, what with the 80s suburban decor and lack of customers. the waitress was super nice and attentive, though, and the lasagna stuffed me to the point where i didn't have to eat for another 15 hours. the place got pretty packed by the time i was done, and i think the next-youngest person in there was about twice my age.
