Food - Awesome!
Service - Eh, so so.
The wait wasn't too bad for 2 people and it was pretty busy. the atmosphere is comfortable but it can get a little loud. We ordered mimosas, yum! and an espresso; though it took 3 tries to get me an espresso, first i got a coffee, then a cappuccino, then my espresso. Ah, well.
The white corn scramble with Havarti cheese was terrific, moist eggs, great cheese and the corn added this nice crunch and sweetness. Side of fruit and bread. The menu gives everyone choices and the prices were great, all breakfasts were about $9.
I must admit, even living so close, I definitely don't get down to the South Bay enough. Why I am I telling you this...because everyone else on the planet probably know about this place before me :P So why review..one word - SCRAMBLES...yum!
I met one of my Hermosa beach friends at Martha's on a Saturday morning, one of her and her fiances personal favs, and was so not disappointed. We spilt two hefty portions of scrambles, the sweet white corn and the thai veggie brown rice. I am a brunch lover and so picky, and I will be making multiple trips back here for both! The huge bowl of strawberries that accompanied were so sweet and fresh and my iced latte was far beyond Starbucks quality.
Service - hmmm, went from amazing to get the hell off our patio. Started out amazing. Even during a busy time the server was so considerate to let my friend hold the table and even leave it to get me her resident parking pass and return. So sweet and friendly. Then when they were nearing the end of the lunch shift, a new server took over, and I have never felt so rushed or unwelcomed. They practically took everything off the table and folded up the place around us. That said we were talking charity and there for a good 2 hrs...so not docking a star, but the combo of end of shift and parking issues, yeah.
The beach steps away. Amazing brunch. Famed scrambles. Will definitely become a regular.
I guess the BF and I must be really lucky to have found this spot at around 2pm on a Friday- it was great veggie and non-veggie food, served outside in a really cute environment (with no waiting), by friendly staff.
Both my tofu scramble and the BF's regular egg scramble were the best we've had in months. No question- we finished our food!
Afterward, we took a nice walk down the beach and the pier. What a great find... when I told my family in Torrance where we'd been for lunch, they said they go almost every weekend.
Just had a great bite to eat here. I wanted just simple bacon and eggs (over easy) and toast (they had Rye...yay!)....perfect...bacon was crispy, eggs were over easy as requested and it came with some wonderful hash browns mixed with onion....very tasty! My husband had the BLT which he said was delicious and we both had the iced tea which was also good. Our waitress was friendly, helpful and positive, a nice first experience on our arrival to the coast.
Long time fan, first time writer. I've been to this place more times than I can count, so it has to be more than my 10 fingers.
My two favorite breakfast items are the White Corn Scramble and the Hummus Omelet. Every once in a while when they have a Stuffed French special I'll order that. Matter of fact I've borrowed that concept and made it at a few times at home for people. It's a crowd pleaser.
The only draw back is the wait on a Saturday or Sunday morning. Especially if you have more than 4 people in your group. A 4 topper along can be a 30-40 min wait.
Also their breakfast food is a lot better than their lunches food. I've given it a try a couple times, but it was just ok.
One of the best breakfast places along the coast. I had ordered the Hermosa Eggs Benedict which is an eggs benedict with tomato and spinach. Hands down one of the best egg benedicts I've ever had. The hollandaise sauce was scrumptious. My bf ordered eggs scramble with tibuli. Very inventive and creative. It was the first time trying that combination. It was tibulicious.
Definitely going there for breakfast again, whenever I'm in those neck of the woods.
This is a very quaint place to have breakfast or lunch near the beach.
I ordered turkey and avocado sandwich which comes with potato chips for about $7. I added Izze sparkling juice for $2 more. The sandwich becomes gourmet when freshly sliced cucumbers and alfalfa sprouts are added. Not too bad of a price; it's far cheaper than Urth Caffe and tastes better with its more flavorful and succulent carved turkey breast. Best of all, the wait was non-existent for you impatient ones.
This is a beach community; bring coins for parking meters.
I absolutely love Martha's because:
-- It's like a block away from the beach and the view is SO pretty, especially in the morning.
-- It has that warm local mom 'n pop shop feel.
-- Their EGGS CALIFORNIA is DELICIOUS.
-- I've been there a handful of times, and each time the service has been great and the food is so yummy.
If you're looking for a chill, local breakfast spot with great food that's by the beach I'd highly recommend Martha's.
I came here with my friend (she's been here before) for brunch, and we were seated right away. It's a great location...just steps away from the beach! (next time i'll bring my bathing suit and go lay out like a beached whale after brunch...hahahaha) Everyone kept raving about the White Corn Scramble, so I did it! And it did not disappoint! (actually maybe a tiny bit...haha the hype was too great!!). The scramble had delicious FRESH white corn and lots of herbs- it was a lot more flavorful than it looked. The sandwiches and eggs benedict thingys looked amazing...next time...
My friend had the Hummus omlet, which had delicious hummus, sun-dried tomatoes, and some other goodies. The jams they serve (we had Strawberry and Orange) were quite amazing as well.
The only drawback was the crappy service...they waitresses would just walk really fast and pour water/coffee really fast and run for it...haha. They never talked to us after they took our orders, and were quite rude to the other people eating near us. And other than the pigeons jumping on the tables and too many flies for the health department to be okay with...it was okay.
The four stars for the FOOD ONLY. I'll definitely do it again!
(oh btw, we did have a lil reality-celeb sighting..lo? from the hills? haha I'm embarrassed that I actually recognized her!)
Try the french toast! It'll leave you too stuffed to move.. Perfect if your not-so-immediate plans include a siesta on the beach.
So this famous breakfast spot has been recommended to me by friends more times than I can recall. Somehow the one time I went looking for it months ago I couldn't find the restaurant. Not the first time this has happened to me.
But decided to take the family for fathers day & what a great experience! Our server was fantastic, she took time to be attentive to our kids on what had to be one of their busiest days of the year. I think I had 5 coffee refills without having to ask once too - what can I say, but I like my coffee on Dad's day or any other day of the year.
The view cannot be beat, and the place was packed but the wait was not bad at all. We put our name on THE LIST and after about 15 minutes we had a beach side table and food took less than 20 minutes. Pretty impressive.
Finally, the food itself was delicious! My family tends to eat our meals tapas style even if that isn't the theme of the restaurant. Which means we all nibble off each other's plates liberally. So having sampled 6 different breakfast offerings from Martha's I can say with authority that the food is great.. Highly recommend & will be back soon for the french toast.
I crashed at my friend's house after a night of cards and RockBand. When we woke up the next day, he and his wife suggested getting some brunch at the Strand. When he said it was 'the best in So. Bay', I had to squidge my face when I hear such high praise. I've had good food all around So. Bay but I had never heard of Martha's, so I concede my expectations started to go up.
A crowd was there, and there is definitely a wait you have to contend with. Judging by the packed house, both inside and outside, it looks like very popular amongst the locals. I saw some of the plates being eaten on the patio areas. It really did look good. Pancakes, waffles, eggs, eggs eggs eggs. Scanning through the menu as I waited, so many things were just calling to me.
I decided on the Eggs Hermosa, which is a variation of the Eggs Benedict with some poached spinach and roasted tomato.I must say... it was very tasty. I loved tasting the hint of lemon in the hollandaise. I just devoured the thing. I tried some of my friend's ABC omlette, which was quite good. But nothing out of the ordinary or with an extra oomph. His wife had some french toast which looked lacking and tasted ok. I would've like larger pieces. I also ordered a side of bacon that was really disappointing. It was cold and greyed out. (Still tasty... how doesn't like pork products --- BACON!) The home fries that came with all the dishes were the most disappointing. It should've been crispier rather than just a starchy lump on my plate. I didn't finish it. Coffee -- meh. The hot chocolates I saw being served at other tables really looked yum.
Mind you... I am being very conservative with my rating. It leans more towards a 4 than just average. I can absolutely see why the place has an appeal for breakfast. There is so many things I would love to try another time. I am hoping I had an eh brunch on an off day. I'd still recommend this place.
I ordered the Eggs Benedict Redondo --- it's basically eggs benedict with artichoke hearts, but without the ham ---- i did not read the menu carefully and did not know there would be no ham or else i would not have ordered it...
They poached the eggs perfectly, but what ruined this dish for me was the artichoke hearts --- I love artichoke hearts on pizza, so I was curious to try this dish --- the artichoke hearts in this dish also included the inedible leaves.... UGH!!!! so for the majority of the meal i was spitting out the leaves until i just gave up and picked out all the artichoke hearts from my dish --- and i wanted ham!!!! read menus carefully guys...
i would've given this place a one star but i tried my friend's white corn scramble and that was delicious --- i would come back to try other dishes, but not the redondo eggs benedict --- AVOID!!
DELISH!!!! My friend introduced me to this little haunt steps from the beach. Great breakfast/brunch fare. I had the White Corn scramble Saturday and the Greek Omlet on Sunday. Both AMAZING. Be prepared to hang out at the beach whiel you wait, but the food is definitely worth it!
I seriously heart places that make their own pastries. I also seriously heart places that have interesting concoctions that involve eggs in omelette form with bizarre combos I would never come up with at home, like the white corn scramble: like nothing you've ever tasted! We were quick to be seated despite the long list and the service was fast. Add this to my list of favorite breakfast joints across the country.
This place is pretty cool. The ONLY thing you should EVER order is the white corn scramble. It is absolutely dee-lish-ous. I have tried other things from their menu and have always regretted it, thinking "I should have just got the white corn scramble!!!"
Also, be sure to order the toast dry... AND DON'T EAT IT!
When you are done eating, go to the beach and feed it to the seagulls! They will hover and take it from an out-stretched hand. It's so cool, so try it!
Martha's is the legendary breakfast spot.
The wait can be a bit annoying, but the strategy is to put your name in and then bike to 'the end of the world' (the borderof HB and MB) and back. By the time you get back, you barely have enough time to grab a self serve cup of coffee before being seated.
I like the healthy slant to the menu, though I only really get the Eggs Martha. Eggs benny with havarti instead of hollandaise.
The tip of the century is one word: 'side-of-stuffed-french-toast'.
This place is comfort food on the weekends, and closer for business meeting during the week.
Great view, right by the ocean, quaint & quiet, very neighborhood-y local & hippy feel, great staff...I always make an effort to have breakfast here when in the L.A. area.
The omelets and hash browns are to die for!!
What a great spot to have breakfast after a glutinous Thanks Giving! My family and I came to Martha's the day after Thanks Giving because we wanted to stuff our face again. According to my sister (who lives there) its the locals breakfast spot and its usually packed.
I had the sausage, mushroom and white cheddar omelet. The eggs were fluffy and filled with lots of cheese (the way I like my omelette's). I also had the chocolate chip banana nut muffin. It cam out warm and was like a party in my mouth! My mom and sister had the asparagus omelet and it too was yummy.
Service was good and extremely friendly. To top it off...after we finished breakfast we took a walk along the strand and I saw Wee Man from Jackass riding his mini beach cruiser!
WHITE CORN SCRAMBLE
yeah, I saw the other review.
if you order this, you will be so happy, not just from saying "White Corn Scramble, please", not just by being served this dish, or eating or telling people you ate it, but after you eat it, you will feel so good!
Crowded: Yes (get there before 10am)
Sunny: Yes (except when it's cloudy)
Location: YEAH! it's a half block to beach!
Price: Yes, they make you pay (not too bad)
People: Good (look for the Walk of Shame*)
highly recommend

* Walk Of Shame - Look for the guy in shorts and slaps with the girl who is dressed in a black skirt and top, or the girls in sweats with the guy in a button down shirt and jeans.
Probably the best breakfast in the South Bay. Unfortunately, on weekends you more than likely will have to wait 30 mins. to an hour to sit, especially on really nice beach weekends. If you do have a week, The Strand and the beach are only steps away. There is cramped sitting both inside and outside. Again, depending on the weather, one may be more desirable than the other.
The menu is an array of breakfast and lunch. There is something for everyone on it. I typically go with two girlfriends - one is a vegetarian and one is a sweet-and-heavy-and-greasy eater. Neither has a problem finding something to eat and many times they are the ones lingering over the menu trying to decide.
I am a fan of the stuffed french toast specials with homemade jalapeno chicken sausage.
Wine and beer is also served. For brunch the mimosas with the fresh squeezed orange juice are great.
Hands down best breakfast place in the South Bay. Food is tasty and interesting with combinations that you wouldn't expect. The Thai Scramble, Eggs Hermosa, and Tofu Scramble are awesome.
It can be a long wait, but its right on the water so you can take a nice walk before breakfast, or you can have a cup of coffee from their little coffee bar while you wait and play with the dogs tethered to their owners inside. Besides, lets face it, in the South Bay for a descent weekend breakfast in the outdoors with an ocean view, any place will have a wait, and of those places, this is the best one.
I wanted to try the eggs redondo, and the eggs hermosa and the.. anyway, the whole menu rocks. super casual atmosphere, practically on the beach. Came her with the family, ordered mimosas, good food and then went for a walk on the beach.
They have super healthy ingredients for their food. A must if you're in the area.
Food is good. The best thing I had there was the Egg Hermosa.. An egg benedict with canadian bacon, garlic tomato, and spinach.
The coffee is just okay.h
Disclaimer: Unless there's something insanely unique or interesting to be had, I'm not really a fan of your standard run-of-the-mill breakfast foods. I'm odd. If you're normal, you'll probably like it here.
That said, who the hell goes to eat breakfast at 1:30 in the afternoon? I met up with some friends down this way a few weeks ago and was expecting a nice seafood lunch. When I pulled up, I saw the long line and the food the patrons sitting at the patio were eating. I had my doubts. Fortunately, the eye candy there present--the real deal and the aspiring sort--was sufficient distraction.
Thankfully, by the time I arrived, the rest of my group had been waiting for an hour, so I only had to wait about ten minutes until we were seated. The service was very pleasant.
I looked at the menu. Breakfast food. Like omelettes, pancakes, that sort of stuff. No nouveau twist on an old favorite or some fancy-schmancy French toast to be found. Just Denny's standards. There went MY lunch.
I decided to have lox, a bagel, and a blueberry smoothie. They were fine, but who could mess that up? Keep it simple, keep it real, save room for dinner. It ended up that I missed dinner that night because of some fussy companions, but whatever.
Anyway, it seems like a really popular place and, per se, they probably deserve more than three stars.
I say give 'em a shot. If, and only if, you live in the immediate vicinity and got so trashed the night before that you're just getting out of bed at noon.
I live far away and I'm not that kind of guy.
I have only had lunch at Martha's and all of the times I have gone were take-out so this review might be limited in some regard.
If Martha's love didn't cost a thang like JLo's, I would declare my eternal love for her and her tofu salad. Fresh salad, fresh portabello mushrooms, fresh tofu, fresh everything. It will be the best salad I will ever have so take that.
I also haven't had any soup match Martha's chicken-cilantro soup either. Fresh ingredients as well so you get the theme (potion size could be better).
I have never been to breakfast at Martha's and don't plan to. I go to my Uncle Bill's for that. You know I'm right!
No facepalms!
This place is so overrated!! My gosh.. waiting in line to squeeze into a small family restaurant is ok, but to wait a 45 mins to get a table to eat at this place disgusts me.
Went here twice. Twice the omelets were s-o-g-g-y.. .. Their food has no tastes, it tastes worse if you add salt to enhance the flavor too.
Expect a 30-40 minutes wait for weekend breakfast... so not worth it...
Delicious food... I always get the hummus omlete and a muffin that they get delivered fresh every morning
Of course there's a wait. But it's a pleasant wait. Not the hungry as a hippo irritable IHOP kind of wait.
The options were impressive. So many for vegetarian and healthy versions. For omelet, you can opt for yolk-less and substitute fries with fruit. My friend and I were going to split two meals and they even halved it for us. We opted out of the extra toast and they gave us a heaping bowl of strawberries.
Hummus omelet - goat cheese with hummus on top, so creamy!
French toast - not greasy at all and wonderfully light with powdered sugar.
Orange juice - a deep orange color that I had to order one myself, it looked and tasted so fresh.
These are a few of my favorite things!
Breakfast on the beach. Come on how many places are there in Hermosa with fresh oj and nice service? Probably very few, I really don't know cause I don't live here (SFer visiting here).
If you come here, you'll definitely have to wait a few minutes (we waited about 20), but they have like 30 lawn chairs for people to sit while waiting.
The bacon was perfectly cooked, I really respect that in a bfast place. The hummus + goat cheese omelet was good, but it had a little too much goat cheese to egg ratio to be awesome. I will say it was a poor breakfast choice by me. So pick wisely everyone...
I would definitely hit this place up again.
Ordering the right thing here is key. I went with Catherine L. and some other girls, and all I have to say is try the sweet corn scramble! I also ordered blueberry pancakes, which were pretty darn good as well. Latte here was nothing that stands out in my mind--pretty standard. Great location, fun place for brunch!
Everything I've had on this menu is delicious. The wait can be long...but they turn tables fast and you can look at the ocean while you wait!
Everything I've had there is amazing....I usually get the mediterranean tofu scramble with brown rice and it's soo delicious!! Great for breakfast and lunch, I just wish it was open a bit later!
Weekends there is definitely a wait but it is totally worth it!!!
We get up early and it's not a problem finding parking and walking right in. It's all about Mocha's, ABC omelet and cornmeal pancakes aka Johnny Cakes =)
So glad we decided to go here for brunch Sunday morning, it's a half block to the beach so even though you may have to wait a while for service you'll be entertained with people watching. We had to wait about 20 minutes but in the end we ended up with great seats in the outdoor seating section.
The service was good and my blueberry pancakes were great, I was given plenty of eggs as well, which always makes me happy. I hate when breakfast places are skimpy with the eggs.
I can definitely see myself coming back to this place.
The best breakfast I've had in awhile. The food was fast. The view was amazing. I love the omlets!
They are very friendly & very fast. Since it was well after 1 when I arrived, there was no wait for a table for 3 of us. We all got lunch stuff and it was all served up fast and hot! The prices are super reasonable - my chicken sandwich with a huge side of fries was just $9.00. Generous portions. And great people watching too - the restaurant is quite large with a lot of tables, you can either sit outside or inside. Parking might be rough during the summer, so perhaps might be best off biking there.
Martha's is great for breakfast - great spot by the beach, and the food is pretty good. You have to wait a long time but like Ocean Diner, get there early. Fun place to go for b-fast then take a walk on the beach.
On the rare occasion that I play host to an out-of-town friend, there are a handful of restaurants that I make it a point to take them to. There is Canter's Deli** in Los Angeles for that "old-school-L.A.-landmark-and-hey-you-probably-saw -it-featured-on-'Entourage'" experience, Tito's Tacos** for pretty much the same reason (minus 'Entourage') - and then there is Martha's 22nd Street Grill. This is my "yes, I do live by the beach so let me take you to a lovely brunch spot right on the beach where we can watch tanned hotties run and bike by and bask in the sun as we dine outdoors" spot.
All that aside, this really is a fantastic place for breakfast/brunch. There is always, ALWAYS, a line on the weekends so get there about 30-45 minutes before you are ready to eat. But at least you can enjoy some people-watching while you wait. I have pretty much stuck to their various omelet and egg benedict concoctions there and I can promise that you cannot go wrong with any of those dishes. I think I tried the pancakes there once but nothing exceptional. Special mention about their orange juice...I don't know if its freshly squeezed or from pre-packaged but either way, it is delicious and I go through at least 3 glasses of those while I'm there.
Great location, great food, great way to spend the weekend!
**I would write a review about Canter's and Tito's because they are both such great places but I think the 100+ reviews they have each should really speak to it. =)
This place was recommended to me by a neighbor as a place to take my in-laws visiting from Indiana. I saw a bunch of good reviews so we went.
Con: Extra long wait (we had a party of 7). (cancelled out by pros)
Pros: While waiting we walked to the beach and my kids played on the swings. (there's a swing set on the beach 1/2 block from this place)
Beautiful view of the beach out my Mother in laws window
I did what I was supposed to and ordered the WHITE CORN omelet and it was everything that people said it would be and more. Very, very happy.
Portions are more than enough. Service was very good in my book, extra impressive because of how busy it was. Everyone was happy with their food and I got points with the in-laws. Not bad.
My favorite breakfast so far.
P.s. they make fresh squeezed O. J., a must.
I have so many memories here at Martha's...I'll try to be objective, beginning with just three stars.
First, Martha's is almost right on the beach...try finding that anywhere else in L.A. county. The outdoor seating is wonderful with it's fresh ocean air and warm So Cal sunshine. I brought anyone who came to visit me from out of town here. Dining oceanside was always a hit with my urban Manhattanite buds. Everybody loved it...even my mother, and she is damn near impossible to please.
This is not a fancy place, quite the contrary. It's a place you go for an average breakfast or lunch with a stellar view/location. Most people come here for weekend brunch, but it's easier to get a table mid-week...even at lunch time.
Second, the food is consistently good...nothing special...and the prices are fair. You can certainly make brunch better than Martha's does, but you come here because you don't want to be bothered....and you want to soak up the sun and view.
Parking can be tight if you don't live within walking distance. Jump on a bike or throw on your blades if you live in the beach cities. It's less of a hassle. Also, they leave a water bowl just outside their fence for pups to get a drink. The sign in sheet is at the gate entrance. Over 10 years of dining here, I never waited more than 35 minutes...even on the busiest days.
They also have a semi-separate take out area, near where the bathrooms are. You can get coffee to go, or order and pick up your food to go. I always order a coffee milkshake to go, but if you order one when you sit down, they will give you the extra milkshake in the cold metal mixing container....a much better bargain. Yum!
Wear sunglasses, sunscreen and bring a hat if you burn easily and want to sit outside. Even on a cloudy day, you never know when the marine layer will burn off and you might fry like a strip of bacon.
