I remember I really enjoyed this restaurant the last time I went to Saugatuck.  This time it was... a bit of a disappointment.

The experience started out with a dumbass guy they have sitting outside.  He couldn't estimate our wait time and just had a really bad attitude.  We initially put down for a large group and then said we're willing to split up. He didn't even convey that message onwards.

Anyway, after a long wait we finally got seated.  The waitress was really really nice.  Opposite of that host for sure.

The pasta I ordered was not good.  It was some sort of baked spinach / mushroom / rictotta cheese thing.  I guess I probably should not have gotten it.  I didn't like it.

The other half of our party actually ended up waiting an additional 20 minutes just for a table.  They also said their server was horrible.  I don't know, but overall just a downer on a long-weekend out.

Fabulous pizza and better chocolate martinis! They had some kind of deal going the night we went for $10 takeout, so I don't know how good the service is, but I really enjoyed the food. Good option for the very limited area.

I don't really indulge in a good, carb-loaded Italian meal often, but I remembered what I was missing when dining at Marro's during my a recent Saugatuck weekend get away.

To start off, we ordered garlic bread topped with cheese and a side of marinara & and order of mussels.  The tomato sauce on the mussels and the marina tasted of delicious fresh tomatoes - I'm guessing it was homemade.  So good, especially the, gooey cheese melted over the warm, buttery, garlic-y bread, I could have ended my meal there, but alas, we already ordered entrees.  The chicken caccatiore special was huge, easily enough for two after the appetizers.   I had the honey glazed salmon with walnuts.  While it was good, it wasn't a very Italian seeming dish.  Luckily, I had my fill between everything else we ordered.

Overall solid food.  I've had better Italian, but then again, I didn't try to pizzas that they are famous for.  Good service and great location in downtown Saugatuck.

I've only eaten there once.  We had pizza.  It wasn't anything special.  They don't even offer wood-oven pizza.

I consider '5 North Square' in Boston's north end to be the ideal Italian restaurant.  Small, intimate, calamari the size of your fist, Ciopinno served in 2 huge bowls, impeccable sauce, mussels piled high on mussels marinara, etc.

What's wrong with Marro's?  Let's start with 1/2 dozen security guards in their plainly labeled black shirts that guard every entrance and stand around watching patrons eat.  What the deal?  Afraid I'm going to put a two-pack of saltines into my pocket?

Then there's the police that stand out front.  Are there gold bricks somewhere in the restaurant I haven't seen?  Saugatuck is a relaxed, friendly art community.  I've yet to see anyone walking around with a sawed off shotgun in the mood for Italian.

The place is ridiculously large.  The service was fine once I side-stepped a security guard to get to my table.  Guess I felt good I got a nod from another secuity guard working the side door when we left.  No strip search or anything.

Marro's in Saugatuck has been serving American-Italian food for 40 seasons, and they do seem very popular with the crowds of tourists in the picturesque town. For a relaxed dinner -- nothing pretentious -- it's a good choice (and if you actually want a pretentious meal, Saugatuck can oblige elsewhere).

The wine, salad, pizza, and lobster tail we ordered for dinner were all just right. We also shared a piece of cheesecake, which the menu says is the best in the history of the world. It was good cheesecake, though perhaps age-old global superiority is a stretch. Service was excellent, especially as they were full the entire time we were there.

Cute little place.  It's a little pricey for me, but they have half portions of many of their dishes and they are a hefty portion.  I got the pancetta and tomato with absolut pepper vodka, it was a really good vodka sauce pasta dish.  Others had the escarole soup, calamari, and veggie pasta, all of which were very good.  The staff was very friendly and courteous.  I would go back again when I have more money to spend on a proper meal.

Sorry. I don't get it. One hour wait for a table on a Saturday in a tourist location makes sense. One hour further wait at table for the meal is annoying. Serving canned tomato sauce (shouldn't a southern Italian restaurant at least make a decent sauce?) and rubbery chicken on boxed pasta is unacceptable. This for an average $20 per dish is insulting. The whole experience was a complete disappointment. Go elsewhere.

Been here twice on two separate vacations to Saugatuck, and let me tell you I went in with very low expectations. Being the only Italian restaurant in a happening summertime resort town means that Marro could probably get away with much less in terms of the quality of their food and still be packing them in.

However, it seems like some people must really care about what is coming out of the kitchen.

My wife and I started with the Escargot appetizer- a generous portion, tender, and garlicky. Yummy.

Wife had the half size portion of the Chicken Basil which was perfectly seasoned and the perfect sized portion if you don't want to take home left overs. Linguine a la Pescatore for me, which was also very good.

Shared the Mixed Italian Salad with an excellent Balsamic Vinaigrette dressing. Tiramisu was a big hit with our one year old daughter (and us too!)

In summary, a VERY good restaurant by any standards and a ridiculously good restaurant for a resort town like Saugatuck.

On our soggy weekend in Saugatuck, we wanted to eat close to the Inn, so we paid Marro's a visit.  We were both in the mood for some comfort food and what's better than a bowl of pasta to warm the tummy?

We started out with the Sauteed Calamari.  What a great dish!  It's sauteed with plum tomatoes, garlic and spices and comes with two chunks of garlic rosemary bread for dipping.

Hubby and I both love calamari and I was hoping it was breaded - and I got my wish!  We lapped up the dish and hoped for our entrees to be just as special.

We both ordered linguini with white clam sauce - the MOUNTAIN of clam pieces was to die for.  Pasta was cooked to perfection and we gobbled down until our bellies were groaning.  No dessert for us!

Blake was a great server and made us feel very welcome as strangers to the area.

Don't know if we'll be back in Saugatuck, but I'd recommend Marro's to anyone who's looking for a great Italian meal.

Marros' - my favorite in MI along with EPC.

The décor is funky and somewhat Italian (nice view if seated by windows at night, can be romantic).
The place is very roomy, but always a bit of a wait - no reserves are taken, but your patience will pay off.
Everything, from rolls to baby greens to entrees, is rave-worthy.
I don't like your typical "Olive Garden" Italian, and Marro's certainly isn't that.
I cannot vouch for the authenticity, but you have my word on flavor.
Our faves are Prime Rib sandwich and Linguine de Pescatore (so I good, I'm one chianti away from licking the sauce off the plate... *nom*).
Tiramisu and flourless something or other is a good desert choice.
Service is outstanding, and it's not cheap, but a great value for what's offered.

Portions can be easily shared if you're a light eater (we're not).

If you're in the mood for old school authentic Italian food like meatballs (or in my case, braciole), pasta and gravy (South Philly for 'marinara'), you will surely not be disappointed with Marro's.  Get there early; we arrived at 5:15pm and the main dining room was already filling up. By the time we left at 6:45, there was a wait, even though it was pouring rain outside. Try their incredible tiramisu-- you'll be tipsy from the liqueur-soaked lady fingers.   I can't wait to go back to try their pizza, which looked awesome.

I ate here with a friend on Sunday June 6, 2010.  Our sever was extremely nice and professional. I enjoyed the family atmosphere and the warm and friendly ambiance. However, my friend and I were both disappointed with the food.

I had the Bracciola, which cost $24.00. It is described on the menu as "sliced round steak rolled and stuffed with bacon, parsley, Romano cheese and garlic, then slow cooked in our marinara sauce and served with pasta."  This dish sounded so good to me, but with the first bite, I knew that the taste and flavor just was not my thing. My friend enjoyed it more than I did.

My friend had spaghetti and meatballs. She thought it was just okay. I tasted and agreed. I've had better at the Olive Garden and Macaroni Grill.

I hate to give only two stars, but this restaurant came highly recommended and hyped. I will say that the pizza that other diners were enjoying looked very tasty.

My friend and I stayed in the Saugatuck / Douglas area for two days. The best meals we had were at Everyday People's Cafe for dinner, Salt of the Earth for lunch in Fennville, (In hindsight, wish we would have went to dinner there instead of Marro's); and Phil's Bar and Grille for lunch.

The wait during busy hours is 30 mins to 1hour. They do not have buzzers so be sure you plan to get there early. If you are visiting Sagatuck for a weekend getaway without compromising on good comfort food, Marro's does not disappoint. My Clam Fettuccine had loads of clam meat, in a bed of noodles, very flavorful and homey. Pizza was top notch for those who want to grab a quick bite. The view was romantic, at night you can see the harbor and see the boats slowly mooring to dock. The only complaint I have is the noise, with plates and silverware clanking in the midst of a never ending chatter of restaurant patrons. But, we'll be back Marro's for sure to try other things in the menu. Bon Appetit!

We ate here twice during our recent vacation. Service was excellent, the beer was cold, and the food was good. The romaine in the Caesar salad was fresh and crisp, but I suspect a bottled dressing was involved - a good quality dressing, but bottled nonetheless. The first night we both ordered our own entrees: My chicken basil was terrific and my partner's veggie ravioli was good enough for me to lean over and sneak a bite or two.

The next night we went for pizza. It was Friday, much more crowded, and the food was not quite as good. The antipasto salad was quite good, but the pizza was just OK. The crust was just how I like it: crispy-thin, but I suspect that it might have sat under a heat lamp for a bit. Our server was slammed with two large parties and was doing his very best, but he was having trouble getting all that food out and it was obvious that almost all of it (for all of us!) had come up way too close together. Despite our second-night "meh" experience we still enjoyed Marro's and would definitely return.

There are two reasons that my family and I go to Saugatuck. In fact, we went for a day trip yesterday.

    The beach and Marro's.

They have the best bruschetta on the planet - Hands down!

    The sauteed spinach - YUMMY!
    SERVICE - TOP NOTCH!

Both my wife & I agree that Marro's is on our top 5 restaurants of all time & I own a restaurant - so go figure.

If you haven't been to Saugatuck, yet - jump in your car and hit the beach & then for dinner - no need to look elsewhere, this is your place!

    Marro's - keep it up!

Went here on a Saturday night for dinner.  The wait wait was about an hour for a party of two, and they do not take reservations.  We knew this upfront, and we chose to wait, mainly because we were craving Italian food, we heard the food was good, and we weren't super hungry or in a rush.  In the meantime, we decided to wait at the bar a little bit.  There weren't any seats at the bar, but, again we didn't mind too much.  After ordering two mixed drinks, the bill only came to $9, which was so reasonable (and the drinks were good, might I add!) ;-)

When the time finally came for us to be seated, we were presented with a really comfortable booth.  We ordered the bruschetta to start, which turned out to be a great choice.  It was served with fresh chopped tomatoes in basil and balsamic vinaigrette over melted mozzarella cheese on toasted bread.  It melted in my mouth; I didn't want the experience to end.  For my entree, I ordered a rainbow trout dish with a small Ceasar salad.  The salad was pretty good and the trout was very fresh and served in a butter-caper sauce with roasted peppers and artichoke hearts.  The sauce was a little too sweet (I think they put sweet wine in it?), but enjoyable nonetheless.  I also appreciated  the generous portion of authentic Italian broccoli it was served with, which made me feel like the meal was pretty healthy as well delicious.  My husband ordered the osso bucco, which I did not try.  I take his word that it was delicious, and it seemed to be a pretty generous portion if you're super hungry.

Service was excellent.  The server gave us some time to make up our minds on what to order (it's hard when everything looks delicious!), and provided some suggestions on the menu.

I'm not sure what other Italian food experiences others posting here have had, but please rest assured that this is not anywhere near authentic Italian food. After an excessive wait in 90 degree heat (hour and 15 minutes) our party of 5 was seated at what amounted to two small tables pushed together in the traffic pattern near the front door with the late afternoon sun streaming in the face of two of us (no blinds on the front door, fun!). We ordered the following: Mussels, Garlic Cheese Rolls, Mixed Italian Salad, Chicken Parmigiana and the Lasagna. Let's start with the Mussels. For those that like them, you know the flavor they have right before they turn bad and make you violently ill the next day? That's what these were like. I asked the waiter where they were from and he was able to determine from Asia. ASIA?? The Garlic Cheese Rolls were served in a round pie tin and were clearly pre-molded dinner rolls slathered with fake-garlic butter, baked and topped with melted mozzarella cheese. Like really? The Mixed Italian Salad was mostly iceberg and romaine, topped with anemic "truck-ripened" tomatoes (why can't restaurants ever figure this out?), cucumbers and a smattering of portabella mushrooms and chick peas, all for $11...thanks! Lastly the Chicken Parmigiana and Lasagna according to each who ordered it had that special Chef Boyardee taste about them. The culinary-delight entrees took nearly an hour to reach our table...perhaps the guy in the kitchen with can-opening duties was on break?? Lastly, the waiter was oblivious to our feedback and can only guess the management and/or owners could care less since the tourist trade thinks it's the bomb. AVOID!!

UNMATCHED. The following review is based on countless visits to Marro's Italian Restaurant.. Living in Chicago all my life, I've had the opportunity to try some of the best food in the country. With no doubt in my mind did I ever think an Italian restaurant; named Marro's located in a small quaint town of Saugatuck, Michigan, could ever surpass the quality of food and atmosphere like Chicago restaurants. That was until I visited Marro's for the first time. Marro's has a special place in my heart. The food and ambiance is unsurpassed, they're thin crust pizza is the best I have ever had, and I am no novice when it comes to pizza. The bruschetta the BEST I have ever had. The fresh marinated tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, melted into a bread bowl and baked to perfected is the best thing I have ever tasted. The pastas, fish, wine selection.. It's all just incredible. I give high honor to Marro's. The staff, the food, the ambiance, it's all unmatched. I highly highly highly recommend Marro's!

Great environment, great beer, and FABULOUS garlic rolls.  The best restaurant we found in Saugatuck.  You have to try the garlic rolls!!!  My only complaint would be that they are closed on Mondays and weekday lunches.  Other than that, we had a great experience.
