The Timber Lodge Marriott is an oasis of respectability on a strip of cheap ski motels and casinos. It sits almost right on the border between California and Nevada. Walk to the left, and you get sports shops, liquor stores, and motels; walk to the right, and you meet with casinos and cheap breakfasts.
We stayed at Timber Lodge--which is right at the foot of Heavenly--during the off-season. The location is perfect during the winter. Off-season, unless you like to gamble (which I don't), South Lake Tahoe isn't the best area in Tahoe to visit. We did, however, get a really good deal on the room. The hotel is really nice; they seem to have all sorts of great activities and amenities that we didn't take advantage of. The room was clean and attractive. The beds, as other people have mentioned, were ridiculously comfortable.
The beds were so comfortable that it seemed impossible to make the 10 am checkout time--that seems really early for checkout to me, but I guess Timber Lodge operates on skiiers' time. We asked the night before for late checkout, but they said they offered only limited "first-come, first-serve" late checkouts starting at 7am. So, we set the alarm for 7 am and called the front desk and then were allowed to check out at 11. That's kind of a strange process, but, at the same time, they were very accommodating when we arrived early for check-in.
One slight negative is parking. You can pay $20 for valet parking or park for free at Harrah's a block or so away. The Marriott actually tells people upfront about the free option, which I appreciate.
There are two listings for this property on YELP, I used the one with the most reviews. I am a Marriott Gold Elite Member so I spend 50+ rooms a year in Marriott properties. I basically rate them as consistent and overall great places with a 3-4 star rating. I thought this property deserved a rare 5 star rating.
You can get caught up in the location, especially since this one is Lake Tahoe. So step away and objectively look at what we have here.
1. Beautiful accommodations, really nice rooms.
2. Unbelievably comfortable bed.
3. In house movie rental
4. Close to many good restaurants
5. Laundry facility (free)
6. 4 hot tubs
7. Nice pool
8. Excellent workout facility (big with free weights)
9. Amenities for kids, movie, miniature golf, etc
10. Lots of cool shops
11. Close to nice beaches (free beach pass)
12. Close (3 blocks) from the Casinos
13. Well trained, helpful staff
14. Very clean throughout
15. Microwave, frig, toaster and coffee maker in the room so you can reduce breakfast costs
16. Major Supermarket 3 blocks away for stocking your room
17. Room temperature control that works well
18. Seems like nice people stay here, they were all talking to me
Yes, its expensive. But if you are skiing or doing the summer gig in Lake Tahoe, this is an amazing self contained property. Excellent price/value relationship.
If you are visiting the area there are other great hotels and motels. You need to focus on what you are looking for and which amenities work for your particular vacation goals. There are many less costly alternatives with fewer amenities.
Hubby and I stayed here on the last weekend of snowboarding season. This is without a doubt the place to stay if you like to be right in the mix of things. Room was nice with a mini kitchen and sofa - basically what I expect of a Marriott so it's really truly all about the location here. Gondola is literally right out the door along with shops, restaurants, movie theater, ice skating rink, casino, and a Raley's. Gawd, what more could a girl ask for? !
Minus one star for the crazy $22 charge for overnight parking. Please Marriott, you are not the city - you must refrain from inhaling all that powder, it's making you delusional! Until then, we will park in the adjacent casino...thank you!
Great location in the heart of things in Tahoe, with the mountain gondola right outside your hotel. Prices were reasonable, rooms were clean, and the pool area wasn't bad either. The convenience, though, is the most attractive feature.
Valet parking was quite a pain. They advertise to call down in advance but they either never answer the phone or never have the car ready when you arrive. They also walk around your car and go crazy mad about trying to find scratches or dents so they can claim they are not at fault. Watch them do it as they waive their hand at the camera wherever they see a dent when circumambulating the cars.
Just returned from our annual family vacation at Tahoe and had a great stay at the Timber Lodge. Great location, very nice rooms, free wifi, steps from the casinos and shops. The kids enjoyed the pool and hot tubs. Rates can be a bit pricey if you do not have some sort of discount...luckily we did! Overall, a great place to stay.
Went with family friend twice on a weekend in the winter. She got us the 2nd floor room with the gondola view, right above the restaurant. It was two rooms with full kitchen, washer and dryer on one of them. I like the area where a lot of foot traffic and all the restaurant. The seen in the winter was spectacular, specially when they put the ice skating ring and light bulbs decoration on all over the tree and building.
Uhhh, the out door heated pool and the hot tube can set the night on fire and if you're lucky the seen looks better when it snowing. Drinks are not allowed in a glass bottles and/or cups of any kind. So, use plastic water bottle to drink your alcohols with in the pool and hot tub area.
GREAT LOCATION! It is at the heart of everything. The rooms include a full kitchen (stocked with kitchen essentials such as cooking utensils, Tupperware, toasters, etc), washer/ dryer, dinner and living room area, separate bedroom with a jacuzzi, two flat screen TVs and my favorite part: FREE HIGH SPEED INTERNET!
South Lake Tahoe is a very eclectic place- the Marriott almost seems out of place with the throwback hotels, restaurants, and hospitality of the area. Nonetheless, other family members were staying here, and I wasn't opposed to a night at the Marriott. Luckily, I had a $100 gift card, so it softened the blow of $220/ night during spring.
When we arrived around 2 pm, the room wasn't ready yet, so we left our bags and went sightseeing and got something to eat. When we did check in, we were very pleasantly surprised. The room was almost too big for 2 people, what with the separate bedroom and living room/ dining room. We could have slept 4 others if needed. The kitchen was a nice surprise, even with a Kool-Aid container in the fridge.
The bedroom was somewhat small compared to the rest of the room, but offered a balcony to peek at Lake Tahoe and enjoy morning coffee. The bed was extraordinary with king sized accommodations made with fine linens. The TV had any channel I needed and the closet was big enough to move in.
The bathroom was impressive, also. The bathtub, though not used during our stay, could have fit 2 if desired. The hotel provides Bath and Body Works toiletries, a nice surprise. It was actually a smart marketing plan- the scent is so good I now own the soap for my guest bathroom and find myself using it often.
Overall, the stay was quick and our needs were few. The staff at the front desk was very helpful and friendly, the room needed nothing else and I will definitely be staying here again, gift card or not.
For me, the location is the best thing about this place. It's next to everything you need and you can easily walk everywhere.
I prefer the Grand Residence next door and will only stay there from now on. The room was small and noisy for the price. There were noisy kids running around the hallways at 7 a.m. when I was trying to sleep.
I used the Fitness Center and it was nice. Great treadmill and other equipment.
We stayed here last year during New Years. It's like a mini apartment with kitchen, living rooms, and bedrooms. It is really clean and cozy.
Its cool because there is an ice skating rink downstairs and a bunch of good restaurants. Plus the Entrance to Heavenly's gondola is down stairs. Its also a 10 minute walk to the cosinos. To my suprise it was Crackin on new years. Timber Lodge is a must!!!
Timber Lodge makes it easy.
You are 5 steps from:
1. Gondola to Heavenly
2. Harrah's / Vex
3. Starbucks
4. Raley's (Beer)
5. Hot tub and heated pool (w/separate pool towels)
Nothing else to worry about... they sell eggs and bacon in the lobby so you can put the stocked kitchen to good use (frying pan and flatware included!)
Spongebob Awesomeness: This is where Spongebob stays when he boards in Tahoe.
What an awesome place! The building looks like a large log cabin and is just stunning. We stayed here in a 1 bedroom villa with a lock-off which is an attached hotel room with a bathroom and kitchenette. The main villa had a full kitchen, washer/dryer, large TV, fireplace and a beautiful master suite with a large bathroom and jacuzzi. Outside your villa is a heated pool and 2-3 hot tubs that melt the tension of the day away.
There is also nice shops, restaurants (skip Fire + Ice though), a movie theater, Cold Stone Creamery, etc. There is also an ice skating arena during the winter and gondola rides. There is also kids activities going on in a room off the lobby which includes movie time, crafts and other supervised activities. It is also within walking distance from Raley's and the casinos.
Very nice place, can't wait to go back again.
This place was a great find!
I stayed here this past weekend w/ a few friends.
Check-in was a breeze..room was very clean...no 2 night minimum....and room was cheap! (well not cheap..but cheaper compared to the other older hotels)
This hotel seemed newer and is a 3 minute walk to Harrahs and Harveys.
I would def stay here again.
My daughter and I are staying here this week for our annual mommy/daughter vacation.
We came here last year too.
This is a terrific spot to stay while in South Lake Tahoe. For a family, it is great because you get a fully stocked kitchen and all of the amenities.
Since we have a timeshare in Colorado, we trade for this one. It is one of the best to stay at in Tahoe. A lot of the other ones are so dated that they really are not very nice. The Marriott is beautiful and the location is terrific.
And when you have a three year old with you it is nice to be near all of the things that make a kid happy ... Coldstone Creamery, the movie theater, snow, the gondola and Wolfgang Puck's pizza.
And it is fun to swim in the pool.
My daughter thinks life does not get better than this. ^..^
To me...This place is the worst place ever. All I can say is... No wonder why the FTC is cracking down on FALSE CLAIMS. Marriott has two locations on yelp in South Lake Tahoe...Most of the poeple vote great on one of them and if you look real hard you will see the same names vote less stars on the other location.
We would get non stop phone calls from this place (guess they do not know what the DO NOT CALL LIST REALLY MEANS) I spoke with a very RUDE lady by the name of April after speaking with the cold caller. This person claimed to be a manager but acted like a person in 4th grade.
Over rated and a complete waste of money. Those photos they use are not even part of the property and do not belong to them.
Absolutely gorgeous hotel in Heavenly! We got a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom suite this past weekend for a little over $200 - apparently quite a deal since this hotel/time share runs $700-800 a night during ski season.
The suite was unbelievable. We had a fireplace, dining room, full kitchen, a master bathroom with a jacuzzi tub, and several plasma screen televisions. Oh yes, and a washer and dryer with tide to keep our ski clothes clean!
The resort's location is key if you want to ski or gamble at Harrah's or Harvey's. You also have several Starbuck's and grocery stores within walking distance of the resort. Prime location for people who don't want to walk too far in the cold.
Impeccably clean rooms and professional staff. My only complaint is that the resort lacks room service!
Hubby and I hit Tahoe last weekend and boy was it off season. Yeah, duh right? Well, we're Tahoe newbies so cut us some slack. Anyway, the weather was great (60-70s) but unfortunately, all the things we wanted to try were closed: zip lines, gondola, kayaking, etc. Bummer.
As for the Timber Lodge, Marriott rarely disappoints. The Alpine building offered good amenities and convenient location. Pluses included: free wifi, a beautiful, awesome, humungo heated pool plus FOUR hot tubs. Minuses included: $19/night valet parking where the guys did this weird thing windexing the windows as soon as I got into my car. Odd. Also, front desk agent charged me Sat rates for both Sat and Sun nights... when I told him it was incorrect, he said, "I don't think so..." Excuse me, say that again? Thankfully the front desk manager Jaime corrected the error promptly. Pretty shitty for a 4-star establishment though. Finally, we asked the concierge for a recommended walk to the lake-- he told us this podunk, sidewalk-less path to a chain link fence. Maybe bc it was off season. I dunno though: it was a horrible intro to the lake.
Stayed here in January over MLK weekend. Due to the holiday weekend, didn't get the choice location, so our room was on the first floor, with a view of the valet parking area.
The housekeeping people were basically absent during our stay. The hotel room was not luxe, but definitely adequate for our needs. The sofabed was a good place to throw all our ski gear. The staffpeople were nice.
The location of this hotel is AMAZING. Lots of things within walking distance. It is just too bad that on the day we chose to ski, it was too windy, so the gondola lift (the prime selling point of this hotel to skiers) was closed. The shuttle buses were waiting to take us to the lodge though, and that worked out pretty well too.
Great location, for example it's only steps away to Heavenly Gondolas, a private beach or a 5-minute walk to the casinos.
We had a one-bedroom suite, which had all the amenities of a home (dishwasher, washing machine, dryer, microwave, Jacuzzi bathtub, fire place). Lot's of space and things to do for a toddler as well.
Nice staff!
AhhhhhMazing!!! I just got back from a great weekend with the boyfriend at South Shore. The location is spectacular, with great shops, restaurants, and people. It's great walking disctance from their PRIVATE beach (yesssir private!) and the evil Casinos.
The resort is very well-kept, the pool is perfectly set at a comfy 80 degrees, and they have 4 whirpools, one is HUGE that can fit at least 15 people, another 2 can fit 10 people or so, and then there is a "2 seater" that me and my love shared for a good 45 minutes.
We had a 1 bedroom villa, and I swear it was bigger than my apartment. There was a kitchen with granite counter tops, and marble flooring, a separate living room with a fire place, which led to the bedroom that had a whirpool tub that ACTUALLY fit my 6'5'' bf! There was a separate bathroom with his and hers sinks, and this bathroom was bigger than my bedroom at home, seriously.
They have THE most comfortable beds, with HUGE fluffy pillows, and a big cushy comforter.
I could only spend a couple nights there, but after my one and only visit I'm really considering purchasing a timeshare...I absolutely LOVE Tahoe to begin with, but this place is like no other.
We had a 1 bedroom villa
I usually go to Tahoe in the winter, and I usually stay/ski on the North shore, but when an opportunity came up for a free, all-expense paid* weekend at the Marriott in South Lake Tahoe, who was I to say no? (* and by "free" I mean my sister was staying there with her family and invited me up, and I happily mooched off them).
The location couldn't be better if you like convenience and being close to everything. The Heavenly gondola really is "steps away" (to quote the brochure), you're surrounded by shops and restaurants, and Harrah's is right next door. The pool is large with plenty of lounge chairs for all (but it's about 4' at its deepest - I like a deeper pool). If you're with kiddies, there's lots to keep them entertained - there's a play room and little activities like face painting and free ice cream. All the hotel employees seemed nice. I just wish they had more convenient self-parking options -- I don't like to pay extra for valet.
The room (alas, we didn't have a suite) itself was fine - comfortable and clean, but pretty much your average hotel room plus a tiny kitchen area. But again, the location can't be beat.
As nice as Tahoe is in the summer, I left hoping for a good ski season this year. Pray for snow!!!
Love the place.
We took our lil Wasabi there for a one day break with the family and were very satisfied with this resort. Although, during high season, the prices can get kinda outrageous, try to find a deal towards the end of summer the week before.
The one bedroom suites were huge, over 700 square feet with two TV's and DVD players, kitchen had everything, nice dining area, and even a washer/dryer! Jacuzzi Bath and Shower completed what felt like a one bedroom condo.
Great location on the Lake, 2 minute drive to the Recreation Park. The Timber Lodge is situated right near Harrah's, Harvey's for the gambler with plenty of shopping all around. There's also a great BBQ place right across the street, Womack's.
This is definitely one of the nicest places I've stayed in Tahoe. Even though it costs a bit of change, take the Gondola ride to the top, the views of the Lake are amazing from up there.
Our room was a studio, so we had a mini fridge, microwave, and kitchen sink. (No stove, no fire place, no jacuzzi tub in studios.)
The location was great. We could get to Heavenly gondola in a few second from the hotel lobby. Also, this hotel is walkable distance to Casinos. If we need any groceries, Raley's (we went there every day during our stay) is just across the street. Some restaurants, movie theater, ski rentals are in the same properties.
(BTW, Heavenly ski resort is way expensive-almost $90/day!! Marriott does not own the resort, though...)
I spent the past 5 days here with my friends. We had a 2-bedroom villa with a whirlpool tub in the master suite. It had a fully stocked kitchen- full size refrigerator, stove, oven, toaster (the kind that sucks), dishwasher, and even a blender. They also have a washer and dryer but you have to bring your own detergent and dryer sheets.
It's the perfect place for a getaway with your girlfriends or boyfriend. Harrah's is right next door (well, Embassy Suites is next door and Harrah's is next to ES), so if you like to gamble there are lots of casinos at your disposal (just across the stateline). Hard Rock is located across from Harrah's, inside of Harvey's, and there's a new casino just down the block called Mont Bleu, which is supposed to have the next "it" club.
Parking is valet only- $14 per day, but worth every penny. To my understanding, there's free parking, but it's difficult to find and not worth the trouble. The valet guys are on top of their shit- they open doors and chit chat a little, even at 6AM.
If you're a timeshare owner, you have to pay for cleaning service. For the master suite it's $15, so it's reasonable.
I stayed here over the 4th of July weekend with 9 other people in a 2 bedroom villa for about $1070 for 2 nights. Well worth the money. The room easily slept all 10 of us, 7 girls and 3 guys we are all rather close though. It had two bathrooms and I still felt like we had plenty of privacy when we needed to shower or change. This place is perfect for a large group or family looking for the daily maid service of a hotel but still want the extra room and ability to cook your own food like a cabin would offer.
The other great thing about the resort is the pool we spent a whole day relaxing by the pool, it was really nice. And you can't beat the location you are literally right next store to the casinos, no need to take a taxi. There is also a few restaurants down stairs and you are within walking distance to safeway. I think it is $20 a day to park, but you can park next store at Harahs and save the money.
Day 3
As we woke up late, we called to ask the maid to make up the room. We left to have lunch and visit the casino next door. After coming back from next door, we still noticed the room was not clean. As it wasn't a big deal to make up the room, I called the front desk to cancel the "Tidy Service." So as a note, if you don't have the maid's clean during the morning "Tidy Service," you'll be waiting a while before your room gets cleaned. I used the gym facility and all the equipment was in excellent, tip, top condition. The men's locker room was very clean. I did notice that they were missing a TV on the strength training room and there was no clock at all in the gym. it would have been useful so as I wanted to finish by a certain time to make dinner. We also sat down in the pool chairs for about 5 to 10 minutes to check out the pool. They had a great pool and hot tubs as everything was nice and clean.
Day 2
We tried out the TV and there were tons of channels. There definitely was plenty of programming. We woke up late and I had to call in to the front desk to ask the maids to clean the room. The front desk took approximately a minute or two to answer the phone. I though this was quite slow. The maids did a good job at cleaning the room and they restocked all the amenities and made up the room.
Day 1
We had a hard time finding the hotel as the driveway was very small and the sign was not very visible from the street. We pulled our car in for valet parking as there is no self parking at this hotel. The valet guy was very nice and explained the parking procedure to us. I walked up to check in and Michelle was quick to check us in and described a few points about the hotel. Once we got into the room, we noticed a nice layout and a clean room. As we got to know the room better, we noticed the position was not very good as it is not directly in front of the bed or the couch. The TV is an old CRT rather and a LCD TV and it does not swivel as well. The bathroom was very clean but there were not many amenities. There was only soap and shampoo as they did not supply a shower cap, body wash, conditioner, q-tips, razor, bottled water or anything else.
Spent a week here in August. Excellent location for all things Tahoe. Food and groceries in walking distance. The Heavenly Gondola requires less walking than going to the valet for your car. Casinos within walking distance. Hotel has fully equipped fitness center with shower facilities. Parking is $19 a day, but you can park for free in the Harrah's lot next door.
(Spend 45 minutes hearing a time share pitch and get $100 voucher towards food or the gondola ride.)
Nice location and facilities, although it lacks the "Wow" factor if you're considering it as a time share. I'd rather see the Lake (which is strangely distant) than the Gondola, although the plethora of food, shopping and other support facilities is a real plus.
Incredible rooms. Fantastic location. Simply the best place to stay in SLT.
We stayed at the Timber Lodge for the second time in a year. AS always, it was wonderful; everything from parking your car to the bellboys and front desk staff carry out everything smoothly and efficiently like a well oiled machine. Everyone is very nice and knowledgeable. Their are two pools, three Jacuzzis, book rentals, activities on and off the resort put on by the resort, a fitness center, and just about every amenity that you would expect from a resort. The rooms are clean and well maintained; I prefer the two bedroom units sense they are needless to say bigger and have a shower as opposed to just a just a tub. I love the fact that they also have a regular tub, plus a Jacuzzi tub which I have yet to try. Like other yelpers have said, they provide you with a fully furnished kitchen which is cool. You get maid service every day and the place is next to a plaza with various restaurants and shops, plus a shopping center across the street with an Albertson's and other shops and restaurants. You are only footsteps away from the ski resorts and casinos. Essentially, you are in the center of the hart of South Lake Tahoe with everything at your fingertips. What more could you ask for? Oh,! the in-house restaurant, Fire and Ice is an experience in itself. It is Mongolian barbecue style meets fusion; you get your food and bring it up to the hot wok where they quickly cook it up. Everyone is in a party mood with such a lively atmosphere and music. They also have festive drinks which I had two of, that is a total of 92 oz. I amazed the waitresses; they were could not believe that I was still vertical, asking "How are you doing" a few times. All of the meats and vegetables are what you would expect with sauces like orange, Szechwan, garlic, Panza, soy, and other Asian and Asian fusion sauces. They also give you corn tortillas and bread with your meal. So, for a good time and a prime spot in South Lake Tahoe, Marriott's Timber Lodge cannot be beat. Keep up the good work guys.!
never was able to afford to stay here but it looks awesome from the outside and is in THE best location.
