In town for a show at the convention center, I wasn't able to find an available room anywhere else. The Marriott Plaza San Antonio happened to have a few rooms left (or suddenly open up), so I booked.

Upon arrival, I realized it was a smaller hotel than I expected, but that did nothing to diminish its charm. It was peaceful, relaxed, clean and quite pretty both around the hotel and inside the rooms. I felt worlds away from the RiverWalk, despite it being just down the street. Even better -- I never once heard the bagpiper who regularly plays in the evenings on Market St.

On my first morning, I discovered the peacocks! I've never been to a hotel where any non-wild animals roamed the grounds and was rather impressed. Two peacocks (one entirely white, one a mixture of white and natural blue/green colors), and several pheasants (of some type - very striking) walk around  the property freely. Guests know not to disturb the birds, but the birds are also fairly comfortable being around the guests. A pen on the side of the building contains several perches, water, and a soft bedding of some kind in case they're like to retire there for the evening (or day), but the door is always kept open.  I got some great photos of all of the birds on my last day - and was lucky enough to get some shots of the white peacock showing off his beautiful feathers.

Back to the hotel... The bed  was really comfortable with a snugly down comforter.  Toiletries were a step above most hotels. In this case, they were the Bath & Body Works aromatherapy collection in mandarin ginger.  When I had a package arrive, a gentlemen came right up to my room to deliver it for me (instead of having me come down to the desk to retrieve it myself). And during my entire stay, the entire staff was incredibly warm and hospitable.

The only thing I could really find fault with was that their room service selection was quite skimpy compared to other hotels, and room service delivery didn't seem to extend into the late night. As a business traveler who works on trade shows, sometimes the hours can be a bit long. In such cases, it's usually preferred to just go back to the hotel room and order something up than to have to go out and hunt for a restaurant.

From those slim pickings on the room service menu, I have to at least rave about the huevos rancheros! YUM! The salsa might have been a bit better (it seemed canned, not fresh), but it wasn't horrible. The combined result, however, was fantastic.

On my next trip into the city, the Marriott Plaza was booked up, and I stayed elsewhere, but I made a special trip over for the huevos rancheros breakfast before getting myself to the airport. Just sitting in the dining area, watching the birds stroll around in the grass, eating leisurely and having a great conversation with the server on duty was relaxing and enjoyable.

On my next trip to San Antonio, the Marriott Plaza will be my first choice. It's away from the noise of the RiverWalk, yet close enough to easily walk. And if you're in town for a convention at the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center, you're just an easy block or two down the street.

Nice clean hotel, very quiet and laid back atmosphere inside. Hotel is build around some historical buildings which you can see when you travel out behind the hotel near the pool area.  You can also see around the pool area peacocks roaming around.

Hotel is a short walk away from the river walk and Alamo. One negative is hotel parking, $21 a day to park is kinda expansive.

Pretty nice hotel. Good buffet breakfast, even though not free. Pool/spa area is very nice. Peacocks and pheasants roam around, lots of trees, private feeling. Workout area in a cute cottage with lots of great machines, including Precors . Cardio machines have TVs attatched and headphones are provided!! Free fruit also provided! All people working at the hotel were friendly. Clean rooms, convenient location....I cant think of any complaints.

I stayed here last week for a work conference and really enjoyed my stay.  I have stayed here four times now and plan to come back.  The room rates are reasonable and the rooms are comfortable and quiet.  You get a USA Today newspaper outside your door each morning.

I also like the fact that the Riverwalk is a short walk away - you can be there in minutes!  You are also close to Market Square and the Federal Training Center.

All of the staff at the hotel are very friendly, especially the workers at the front desk.

The only negative thing I can say about the Marriott Plaza is that most hotels are now offering a cocktail hour each evening, with snacks.  At the Marriott Plaza, you have to be a Platinum Club member to enjoy these benefits.

This was a cute little hotel to stay in for the weekend and though it isn't fancy, I really enjoyed it.  It has a very cozy atmosphere and since it is intertwined with some historical buildings, it has a unique atmosphere to it.

Let's get the bad stuff out of the way.  The parking sucks.  You pay $19 a day--if you're lucky.  If the lot is full, you have to valet.  Since they hosted a big party every night that we stayed there, if we weren't parked by about 7:30, we were outta luck and had to valet.  Bummer.  Couple that with the fact that they are completely understaffed in the valet section, and you have some major problems.  Every single time we had to valet our car, we ended up waiting for almost ten minutes for the guy to get back from valeting yet another car.  It was awful.  Plus, their security is pretty lax and leaving our car in the already paid for lot was a little worrisome.

For the happier news: the hotel was clean, the service was friendly, and the breakfast is actually pretty good.  They have a little buffet and a chef to make whatever your heart could ask for.  Unfortunately the line can get backed up if everyone wants waffles or pancakes, but it is well worth the wait.

The water pressure was decent in the bathrooms and our rooms were nice and spacious.  They had a combo of firm and soft pillows which was nice since the hubby is pretty picky about that sort of thing.  Our view was pretty pathetic since all it did was overlook the patio.  Since there were parties on both nights, it basically meant looking down into soft-core porn since prom evidently means make out session when the adults aren't looking.  Ahh, to be young again.

Depending on the room that you get, you'll either get a real balcony or a one foot wide one where you can barely squeeze through.  The pool area was nice and I enjoyed all the birds walking around.  They had two peacocks (one was an all white) and two Asiatic pigeons.  The gym is in a converted old German home that used to house an English school for the earlier settlers.  It is a nice touch.

Having it so close to the Riverwalk is a plus though the traffic can be a terror.  Luckily, it is close to a bunch of highways.  While this Marriott is anything but glamorous, it makes for a perfect weekend getaway.  It is at a great price point for what you get.

We stayed at the Marriott Plaza San Antonio last weekend for two nights.  We got a king room facing downtown (overlooking the parking lot).  The hotel's nice, though the $19/day parking charge is pretty steep.  We pricelined it for less than $100/night, and I feel like we got a good deal.  The front desk staff is friendly, the hotel isn't loud, the beds are good with down comforters.  The TVs aren't huge and ours had issues going into a parental lock mode with Cartoon Network, but aside from that it was great.  No whirlpool tubs, but the bathroom was nice and they have Bath and Body Works toiletries.

The thing that sets the Plaza Marriott apart, I think, is that since it's not actually on the riverwalk (it's a 2 block walk up Alamo Street to get there) they have the luxury of more space.  The pool area is tree-lined and nicely shaded, and several historic buildings have been converted for things like the exercise room.  I didn't use the exercise room but everything looked nice and it wasn't busy.  Pheasants roam the courtyard grounds, which is certainly interesting.  We were there on a weekend and the traffic noises weren't too bad.  I can imagine if you had a room facing the main street that the hotel is on the traffic noise might be annoying.

The room service as good, they serve the same menu in the lounge and restaurant by the lobby.  The fries were very good, and the chocolate shake was certainly serviceable.
