Always heard this was a great park for bike trails but never could venture this far north. Well I finally made it today and it just makes me sad that I don't live closer. These trails are awesome! I like that they have bike wash rack along with a clear map of the trails at the entrance. Inside they have picnic benches in certain areas. The signs inside are also clearly mapped letting you know of 2way traffic, intermediate, novice, or advanced trails. I would say the difficulty of these trails is a little harder than amelia & va key. All in all, its a great park!

My friends and I went fishing the Saturday morning. While Rico caught a 12-lbs bass, and Steve caught one just under 1 pound, I attracted a crazy gator. All the while, dog owners trained their Australian Shepards, dudebros in jerseys and tube socks threw hail marys, bikers on Harley's rocked out to live country music, families prepared potlucks, and sharp shooters met for target practice.

Yes, this place has it all. There's even a water park for jetskiiers, a field for folks to fly their whizzing remote controlled planes, and would you believe it, a trail for bikers.

This is a veritable wonderland for those who adventure.

Bird watching tip:  Look for Least Bittern, Wood Stork, Snail Kite, King Rail, Purple Gallinule, Purple Swamphen and Limpkin in the Water Conservation Area immediately west of the park.

Excellent place for recreation. I go here for the gun range and sometimes go to the observatory for astronomy.

My husband and I love this park. It has a lot of recreation opportunities for any leisure enthusiast. We often go so my husband can shoot Trapp at the gun range but that is not the main reason to come here. If we lived closer, I would be coming for the Bark Park which has a nice large fenced area for dogs with agility items. In the western backside of the park is a large lake where in the past motorized boat competitions occur. There is also a motorized toy plane area with viewing area and landing strip. Lots of shelters and open areas make it a great destination for picnics and family celebrations. Pack a picnic basket and head to this park for a great opportunity to get outside and enjoy the South Florida weather.

Here's another review for the gun range.
Prices: awesome. Ease of use, awesome as well.
Prepare to be hot of course, since it's outdoors. Unless you go in the winter.
Be prepared to set up your targets at light speed when the range goes cold because they switch off really quickly. And if you're not prepared when the range goes back to hot, then you have to sit that one out, Big Tuna. Yeah, I know it's annoying and strict, but I guess it has to be that way because of possible liability and incompetent people trying to do their own thing instead of listening to the range masters. Occasionally you'll find a range master on a power trip or a bit mean, but it comes with the gun range territory. The only reason I've given it a 3 and nothing higher is that I've had a taste of the alternative- a more pleasant quiet range with longer cold periods so you don't have to rush. If I tell you this secret range I would have to kill you so I won't. Also, I have no idea how to get there, so it would be a moot point LOL.
BUt I guess all these things are in place because of safety and logistics, and it is a safe and clean and well-kept range, so it's pretty good if you want to shoot your rifles. For indoor ranges and handgun shooting, I prefer Big Al, but that's another entry.

This review is specifically for the gun range...

This is probably one of the most inexpensive/hassle free ranges in South Florida... but if you come here mid-day/afternoon on the weekend be prepared to wait or possibly be turned away depending on time of year... it gets really packed... its also outdoors to be prepared to sweat, unless its nice outside, then its probably packed anyway lol

Range officers can sometimes be a pain but they are generally tolerable... some even seem nice... but most are generally helpful... I have seen them help several people having "technical difficulties" but some don't seem to know much about firearms, which is a bit unnerving...

Range is only 100 yards so  good for pistols/shotguns and whatever rifles you want to zero for 100 yards I guess...

If this park was closer, I'd be there all the time. Though it's lacking in tree canopy, there's a lot to do. There's a field for remote-controlled airplanes, lakes for water skiing, ample space to run around and blow off steam, and.........an extensive network of mountain bike trails.

These trails are the cream of the South Florida crop. They may lack the natural beauty of the Oleta trails, but they are much more ridable; they have better flow, allowing for a more graceful, fluid "real mountain" riding experience. Overall difficulty level is high, though, with countless nasty climbs and nausea-inducing steep drops. Bottom line, when I go to Markham, I'm always thrilled to have come back in one piece. It's probably the most dangerous trail in South Florida. Beginners and low intermediates can circumvent the difficult sections, however - the trails offer alternate routes for those who don't feel like risking a broken collarbone.

This is a large, unique, county operated park on the edge of the Florida Everglades.

First, the park is situated on 666 acres alongside the Sawgrass Expressway and State Road 84.  Two canals run alongside it, both with boat ramps which give you access to miles of great urban fishing with the opportunity to catch bass, bream & even snook.  Paddle boat & canoe rentals are available inside the park, with several small lakes connecting to each other; no motor boats allowed in rental boat areas though.  Another small lake around the back of the park is used for jet skiing and occasional remote control boat racing.

Second, there is a busy model airplane field.  I have spent so many days sitting along side that field, watching the remote control helicopters, airplanes, and jets.  Admiring, but secretly hoping that someone would lose control and smash their toy straight into the ground.  I have been rewarded with that spectacle twice.

Third, there is a gun range; to include an outdoor rifle range, skeet & trap shooting, and a specialized section called "sporting clays."

4th, you wouldn't expect to find great mountain biking in a county where the average elevation above sea level is 10FT.  But, the county has made a great set of bike trails, with difficulty levels ranging from amateur to pro, including challenging climbs and drop-offs; helmets are mandatory regardless of age.  There is a bike wash located at the entrance to the trails.

Lastly, there are your normal park amenities such as, a large swimming pool, grills, pavillions, RV hookups, a campground, walking trails, and equestrian trails.  A walk around the back of the park takes you to a dike above the everglades, and offers a commanding view above the sawgrass.

This is one of my favorite parks of all time, and I would highly recommend it.

I have not utilized the entire park off of I-595 in Sunrise, FL, but have been numerous times to Barkham at Markham, the dog park area over the past two years. It's nice that the small and large dog areas are separately fenced off. The grounds and equipment are well maintained by Markham Park.
Any problems I've had have been related to people from the small dog section bringing too aggressive tiny pooches who can't get along with other small dogs over into the large dog area, creating dog pile ups and skirmishes. That's not the park's fault though, that's down to dog owners themselves.

First off I must say this park is amazingly huge !!  Great place to engage in a lot of different activities.  The one that I use most though is the shooting range.

It is an outdoor range so summertime can be a little bit brutal, but for skeet and trap shooting it's pretty much your only recourse.  The staff that works here is truly a pleasure to be around.  They are knowledgeable and friendly.  If it's  your first time shooting and you don't go with someone that know, the staff is extremely helpful.

As far as the regular range goes, you can shoot handgun or rifle.  It's all done manually so you have to go outside and move your own target, but fun none the less.

This park is awesome. First off, its huge.

But of course, the real reason people visit this park is to play with guns, and boy, does this place have the facility.

This park is fantastic for skeet and sport clays. There are something like 10 stations for sport clays, a shooting range and a club house. Best of all, the prices are reasonable and you bring your own ammunition!

The staff are very helpful as well. They wont hesitate to coach you a little if you ask. Great park.

This is a large park! It's got lots of areas for different types of activities.  We went this morning to check out Barkham Park - for our golden retriever.  It's great because there are 2 fenced areas for the dogs - one for small dogs and one for large dogs.  Both parks have a shaded seating area for owners to watch their dogs from afar. And both parks have "playgrounds" for the dogs.  They also have water fountains - both for humans and for the furry friends.  There is a lot of space for the dogs to expend their energy.  We will definitely try to make this a weekly event for our Nala.

Nice park, but some of the clowns who go to the shooting range know nothing at all about gun safety and shouldn't be allowed to own guns!  How about being muzzle swept left and right on the rifle range, or having some numbnut point a shotgun at your face to show you how your head should be positioned at the skeet field, doesn't matter that it's unloaded! They should probably offer a short safety course requirement at least teaching people the basic four rules of firearm safety and how the shooting lines operate, and range officers should maybe enforce safety better?

The 4 Rules of Firearms Safety:

    1.  Handle all firearms as if they were loaded.

    2.  Never point the gun at anything you're not willing to destroy.

    3.  Keep your finger off the trigger and out of the trigger guard until you have made the decision to fire the weapon.

    4.  Know your target, and know what is beyond the target.

This is for the shooting range at markham park. I've been going there for years and I can say I'll never go back. The range officers treat you like a 3rd class citizen. I use to ignore it and it was that much of a problem. But after an incident with a range officer were he treated me like crap and mocked me, I won't be going back. Maybe they shouldn't hire old grumpy men.

This park is so  big and has so many things to do, you can really spent the whole day exploring and doing all sorts of activities.  You can pretty much find me every weekend riding my waverunner on the canal that goes all the way to the bank atlantic center, taking my dogs to Barkham Park, checking out people with their remote controlled mini speed boats or the remote controlled planes and helicopters.  There is a shooting range and many more that i cant remember right now.  Search for Markham Park to see a list of all the amenities and entrance fees.

I have to agree with Jordan. This place is amazing. I wish I lived closer. We used to have BBQ's there all the time and ride the mountain bike trails on the weekends. Gotta get back to that. Man, some of those trails were pretty advanced and extreme, so proceed with cution if you are not the avid mountain biker and stay on the Novice paths. Expert paths are tough for a rookie. Love this park!
