Good in a pinch. Great beer/wine selection. Hipster staff. Bulk foods.
Based on the square footage of the place, one can understand why the prices are so high....you just get over it and move on!
When I don't want to deal with the 'Ol Kroger chain in my hood, Marketime is always there....well until they close at 11PM!!
$11.29 for 2 lbs of Chedder. It's goddam disgusting. It recently went UP from $9.99. Everywhere else in the world it's under $6.99. Almost $5.00 for Soy. You don't just get over it and move on. You go someplace else until they stop doing that crap.
I love Marketime! I go there at least once a day. The people are friendly and it's not as expensive as other small markets in the area. They have pretty much everything you need.
As far as groceries go, you'll pay a bit more for your standard items, but you can find pretty much any of the staples you'll need to get you through the week.
For a nice surprise, venture back to the beer aisle. Marketime has an nice selection of local craft brews.
When I was a bored teenager living in the bland and desolate suburbs of Seattle, I dreamed of one day moving to the CITY. In my mind, I had an amazing apartment in a neighborhood that had everything I needed within walking distance. Also in the dream, I had the perfect roommate - a tame and affectionate grizzly bear named Cuddles.
Well, you know what they say - if you can believe it, you can achieve it. I find myself at age 29 with something close to my dream life, not the least of which is my great apartment in upper Fremont mere blocks away from two of the best places in town: Paseo and Marketime.
Marketime is the best grocery store ever. It doesn't have the selection of Safeway or the endless salad bar of Whole Foods, but it beats them both handily in all other aspects. It's almost always open when I need it (until 11pm every night for those near-midnight NyQuil and lemon custard runs), it's got almost everything my pseudo-bourgeoisie lifestyle demands (five dollar gourmet salsa... iced peach mate... turkey bacon...), and it has a surprisingly extensive selection of the things that are most important: produce, ice cream, and beer. The beer section is literally 1/8 the size of the whole store and if not for the chilly temps I could stay back there for hours looking through all their varieties. There's always a good sale on basics, and they stock a good combination of name brand and gourmet food and household products. The best part is the case right up front of ready-made sandwiches and entrees for lazy... er, busy people like me. Cobb sandwich #1!
The prices aren't Costco-low, but you don't have to buy sixteen pounds of what you're getting at once, either. There's always a parking spot in the lot if I'm stopping by on my way home from work, and the employees here are totally great (and, coincidentally, all extremely attractive in their own unique ways). Sometimes, they're even playing ZZ Top.
I like this place so much that the thought of being without it has actually kept me from moving more than once. Five stars, Marketime... see you after work.
PS. To interested parties - I'm still looking for the bear.
This is a great little grocery store because for being so little, they have EVERYTHING and the people who work here are really friendly. The catch is, like any other small grocery store, it's pretty expensive.
When I was a little Peter my dad took me here to do grocery shopping. Now I'm a big Peter and am excited. Excited because the layout hasn't changed in twenty plus years. First off, when you come in you see the deli area and it's head and shoulders above those found at corporate supermarkets. Another nice thing is the wine and beer is in the first row, so you can get a clean shot to them when entering. The clerks are very nice and friendly, and while the prices may be a little more than say... Safeway, it's all good cause the products are better quality.
I love Markettime. We live a couple blocks away and I'm so glad it's our neighborhood store. Great wine selection, produce, and meats. The staff are always really friendly and helpful- usually when I'm other places and get a crappy cashier I think, "they wouldn't act like this at Markettime," and I've heard a couple friends remark the same as well, but it's true!
The prices can be a little higher, but I appreciate that my money is going to a family-owned business, rather than a huge corporation, so I can deal with paying a little more. Plus, the only two other grocery stores nearby are PCC, where you'll definitely be paying more, or QFC, where I know the quality won't be as good.
They also have a large to-go section. I don't normally get it, but it's there just in case which is always nice to know.
I affectionately call this (like many others) Market-CRIME due to their high markup of basics - i.e. meat, dairy and produce - but despite that, I still love this little market.
It's just a few blocks from me, so if I forget something from my regular Trader Joe's shopping trip, I can just grab it here - OR if I'm home cooking and I need an ingredient, I can walk here, get it and be back in my kitchen in less than 15 minutes.
The truth is, this is no more overpriced that PCC or Whole Foods, and I really like that they carry a pretty big selection of organic, fair trade and local stuff.
Plus, as it's been mentioned, they have weekly specials. I scored a bunch of ripe avocados @ $1 a pop (normally they charge $2.99 each) on my last visit! And lately, they've had some great 2 for $5 specials on their berries.
I wouldn't plan a big shopping trip here due to the $$$, but it's great when you run out something and need it right away, or if you want to plan a spontaneous dinner, or if you need snacks/beer/wine for a party you're headed to. :)
Where else can I buy a donut from Countryside, a bagel with lox, a bottle of wine, Fran's sea salt caramels, organic food, and my Power-C Naked at 11 pm on the way home from work? This stop only requires a little swerving to the left on the road going home. So convenient! I might even be tempted to try one of the vegan sandwiches or dinners to go that they have sometime. Lots of selection crammed into this little location but somehow they have everything including my Island bread from Whidbey.
Always friendly, tables are outside for staying and hanging out with your purchase a reading a newspaper, and I never have to wait to be helped. The real change vendors aren't as pushy at this location so they don't detour me from coming on in past them and smiling without feeling like I want to sprint past to keep from being pressured when I have no bills on me(bad... i know...)
Stop in- You'll love it...
I always run into people I know here that I didn't even know live in the neighborhood- this makes Seattle more fun and not so isolated.
I shop here a few times a week. Everyone who works here is really nice and even though it's a small grocery store I can always find what I need. Their fresh made pizzas and salads are saweeeeeeet! Nice quick stop for some fresh flowers too.
It's a perfect walk from my home, but they also have a free parking lot that always has a spot open.
Oh and, it seems as though I am never waiting in line. Check out is a breeze.
Great selection for a little market within walking distance. You can easily pick up any sort of late-night treats, too, (cookies, chips, ice cream, etc). They have a decent selection of good foods -- fresh bread, wine, hummus, produce, etc.
This is a pretty nice little corner food place. It might not have everything that you would want in a store because of its size, but it is not without its charms.
It is also the closest grocery to where I'm living at the moment. I like it a lot more than the local QFC which is way larger but with trashy food.
I enjoyed my short stint working at Marketime a few years ago. The owners and managers treated me right. The night staff were a kick in the pants. The best thing about working there, though, was the harassment of the customers. To the glossy eyed guy on the other side of the counter... "Visine is on isle 3". Heh... Meeting up with those same folks for beers at the Buck was always cool.
Other than that, Marketime is an exceptional miniature market. I don't know how many times a customer would say, "I've been all over town and this is the only place I could find.............". The prices can be a bit high, but make sure you catch the weekly specials and it'll make up for it. Egg day is Tuesday, Milk day is Wed. Bananas are 49 cents/pound a certain day, too..... I just can't remember which day.
Market Time is best when you're in a pinch. They've got the basic necessities, but as a neighborhood grocer, their selection is limited.
However, they are able to get away with custom packaging items of produce. A group of peeled garlic cloves in those small plastic sauce containers runs a few quarters; totally saving you from buying a whole clove that almost always ends up growing sprouts sitting on top of your microwave.
On a few occasions their produce didn't stand the test of time in my 'fridge, so only buy enough that you know you're going to use. They got a pretty good beer and wine selection and have different sales for both every month, so pony up and consume. They also sell bus passes.
The folks who work there are pretty cool too, save for the older lady who works mostly at the checkout who has the "hurry up and buy" 'tude.
I really, really wished I lived in Fremont because this would be my shopping place.
When walking up, I chalked it up to another City Market - overpriced necessities you find in a small neighborhood glorified convenience store. Boy, was I wrong.
I have NEVER found greater green bell peppers than at Market Time. Crispy, fragrant, watery...delish! I digress, however. I admired their impressive vegetarian staples (Morningstar sausage, Tofurkey slices, etc) and nice wine selection. All in all, big ups all around.
I frequent Mark-up Time; sometimes a couple times a day. I used to frequent Ken's Mark-up on top of Queen Anne. This place has it all, and really, the prices aren't all that bad, especially considering it is just a few blocks from where I reside.
The best thing about this store is the staff. They're awesome. They relate to my being high most of the time I'm in the store. Plus, they can make one paper sack hold more shit than a Honey Bucket. The next best thing is that you can buy a half a pie. HALF A PIE!
Love marketime for convenience. Girlfriend has ruled out other places to live based on proximity to marketime.
Seafood and poultry have been surprisingly good, Produce has never let us down and they always have plenty of whatever ice cream the lady's into at the moment.
I love that I can get whatever I need/forgot at other grocer while my oven preheats.
Since the main attraction here is convenience I'd feel funny about giving it a five star review.
Its really not that expensive either. Markups seem reasonable to me.
Life in the upper part of Fremont could not exist were it not for Marketime.
Marketime is part of the Ken's Markets chain of small neighborhood groceries that dot the northend here and there. Since buying it from the retiring owner a few years ago, Ken's has kept the flavor of the place the same and it has a very different vibe than even the nearest Ken's on Greenwood.
Marketime has everything you could need in a pinch. If you just forewent the whole car thing and shopped exclusively at Marketime, you could live very well indeed. They may not have a wide selection, but they have a quality selection, especially of dairy, meat and produce.
The staff is extremely helpful and they don't have a high turnover rate. If you can't find something, it pays to ask because there is a safe bet that they have it but that it's tucked away somewhere.
AKA: Market CRIME.
I try not to buy anything here unless I have to. What they carry is mostly quality, but still. It's worth it to peruse the $3.99-7.99 wine cart though! And what're you gonna do if it's nearby?
I love MarketTime. I was on the bus on the way to school and I REALLY had to pee. It crept up on me big time. I mean, I had to pee so bad I got off the bus in the middle of my twenty minute ride downtown...I desperately began searching for a place. You know how it is (or maybe you don't?), not a lot of businesses will let you use their bathroom. But I walked in and asked them where it was and they told me, and I was so pleased/relieved. So that is why I initially loved them.
Then, they had these sandwiches that looked really good. So I got one, along with some other stuff (like dog treats and a coconut-chocolate haystack thing), and trekked back to the bus stop. And the sandwich was ACE. Good sandwiches, nice staff, and I got to use their bathroom - this all equals five stars! Oh, and, from what I could tell, they had a good selection! I haven't seen a bulk section in a store in a while, especially not one so small.
I haven't really ventured anymore into the store than the front area where the deli is. I have to say, these people make great salads and sandwiches for a fair price. The soup is also delicious! The service is always friendly. From what I have seen of the rest of the store, there is a really great selection for a small local place. They always have sales, and it is never crowded.
I stopped by here one night for the first time, after going to the gym because I had a coupon from my Chinook Book for the place. I wanted a salad and checked out their pre-made salads at the deli. (The deli was closed by this time.) Besides being overpriced, they were OLD. Like, I flipped them over and there was lettuce slime on the bottom. Gross. No salad for me. I also wanted some hummus since I was feeling lazy and not feeling like making my own, so I picked up a tub from an Oregon company. I get it home, open it up and it was seriously the worst hummus I had ever tasted. I don't think it had anything to do with the company that made it either. It was just old and EXPIRED. I'm one of those people that always checks the date of something before I even put it in my cart. I didn't notice until I got home though that a sticker with a more recent date was put on TOP of the original one, it had expired a month ago.
I would have taken it back but for four bucks, it really isn't worth my time and effort. I just know I won't be shopping here again unless it's absolutely necessary and it's for non-perishable items.
I'm sticking to PCC. I like the idea that this is a locally-owned market but shady tactics like that don't fly with me.
The staff was courteous and it is a cute little store. A bit overpriced though. Did have a very decent wine selection. Their produce selection though leaves much to be desired and no organic options.
I tend to restrict myself to only buy produce from Marketime. Everything else is way overpriced.. even on their special milk day (usually $3.69/gal) it's still cheaper to buy it from QFC (around $2.69/gal).
If you forgot an important ingredient for your batch of cupcakes and you're desperate, they are conveniently close but you have to be willing to pay an arm and a leg.
One plus is that they will wrap their flowers bouquets up with tissue paper and ribbon if you want.
For $4.09 per pound I can indulge my addiction to yogurt covered pretzels in the small bulk section here. Bin #947. Near the back, by the produce. Details are for authenticity and so anyone else sharing my addiction can home in easily on their fix. Oh. That's just me? Fine.
This market has become my "go-to" place three work days out of five. One day is reserved for Paseo and the other day is when I guilt myself into bringing something from home for lunch. They have sandwiches and salads and take-out/heat up meals here and everything else a small grocery store usually has. I wouldn't do all my grocery shopping here, but when I realize at lunch time that I need baby carrots and mushrooms for dinner, I pick them up here for reasonable prices and because they're fresh. The bagel, lox and cream cheese sandwich is decent, the pasta salads really good, and the raspberry bran bars in the serve yourself bin near the checkout counters are amazing. They're next in line of addiction right after the pretzels. People are generally friendly and I like the old fashioned feel of a small neighborhood market with bins of flowers outside the front door. Like I said, I find myself here a lot during lunch hour. You know where to find me.
I love everything about market time. Their selection is amazing. I love the miniature lox and cream cheese bagels, the vegetarian jerquee, the tall cans of strongbow cider, earth-friendly toilet paper rolls, greeting cards, nylon and bust magazine....they have it all...down to the candy flavored cigs for girls.
This place should really be called Markup Time. They prices are high but it is a great little grocery store nearby. Their beer selection is great but seems to have more of a markup then the rest of the place. If you are in fremont and need to get something at the store, stop in. Just don't do your weekly shopping here.
Horribly convenient for locals. Friendly staff. Impressive beer and wine selection as well as a good mix of produce in such a small grocery.
If you live in Fremont you've probably been to Market Time. It is a small grocery with almost everything you need at only slightly inflated prices. We pay more to not have to spend money on gas. Anyways, if you are ever at the Zoo and need a grocery store go to Market Time. They have fried chicken (!), coffee, medicine, produce, an amazing wine selection, and all your other basic grocery stuff. Yay for local groceries!
What organization and efficiency! This little store is amazing. I have actually never once not found what I was looking for. If you need an obscure item, ask, and they will find it on an upper shelf near the ceiling. If there is more than 2 people in line they will immediately call for back up and whisk you through the checkout line without a wait. The staff and owners are friendly and helpful. They have a nice little wine section, and yummy deli foods made on site. Once I lost a complete money order for several hundred dollars, and they went back through their paperwork to find a record of it for me. Above and beyond all expectations. They now have a customer for life.
Marketime gets five stars mainly because it is less than a block from my house.... but also because of their ability to pack a bevy of quality products into such a small space. They have a GREAT wine selection for being a corner store, and pretty impressive produce. And they have bulk bins! And surprisingly enough, their prices aren't too steep.
only when necessary.
pricey!!
Nice local grocery store...nothing glamorous, but it's a nice place to grab those little bits you forgot on your weekly run. I say it's a great place to pick up a twelve pack...they have a great selection of beer including many imports.
i thought I might not have heard the cashier correctly and I was waiting patiently while she finished a conversation with another customer. You know you're old when you have to ask, did I just hear that? The reply from the woman checking groceries says yes, I did say that's totally rectal!!!!! Don't you know that? I said no, I've never heard that and it's really inappropriate especially in a grocery store. She didn't get it.
She said her mom knew about it and I thought to myself, it's too bad her mom didn't teach her any manners.
The fact remains that upper Fremont has no grocery stores so the Marketime is a real life saver, albeit an expensive one. I can't afford to do most of my grocery shopping there but their produce is always fresh and the meat/fish/poultry section always has portions for a single person which is convenient, lots of singles, in the neighborhood. They stay open until 11pm so you don't have to drive a mile to the Safeway or the QFC in Wallingford.
They also have pastries, coffee and really good single size meals yummy. The employees there are friendly and casual, but lately, they've been forgetting the basics of customer service.
Smile and make eye contact, focus on the customer when giving change. Thanks you is always good, Just the basics, no one likes to stand by while the grocery clerk talks to someone while they're ringing up your order. Everyone likes to be treated with dignity, you don't have to be superficial just cover the basics. What happened to the older woman who works early in the morning I haven't seen her for awhile.
More like "MarketCrime" why would I pay like $6 for a decent loaf of bread when Safeway is down the hill? Yes. It is Convenient, however, talk about taking advantage of that. I do appreciate that they have a decent selection. But seriously, $3.99 for a bag of marshmallows? Also, almost every cashier there has the worst attitude. Most of the boys working there are nice but every time i go there and am checked out by a girl cashier, she is awful, no personality, no customer service skills, and is rude. I can say, however, Alicia that make coffee and the cute girl with the septum piercing are very nice. Beware of the tall girl with short curly hair and glasses, she's the WORST.
