I walk by this place everyday and thought it was just another market/liquor store on my Bush Street walk.
One day I was on Yelp looking for good sandwiches in my area and was surprised to see Mayflower pop up. I'm so used to places saying that they are a deli and not actually having a functioning deli that I assumed this of Mayflower. I'm happy to say I assumed wrong! After reading people's pretty much positive reviews of the market and deli and turned off my computer and headed over to Mayflower on a Sunday afternoon in search of a sandwich. I walked out with two fully loaded sandwiches, a deviled egg, two drinks and a bag of chips for $18. I think that's a pretty good deal! Up to the park LM and I walked and feasted on our glorious sandwiches. They were really good! I would have to say well worth the money!
The deviled egg was much different from the deviled eggs my mom makes, but different in a good way!
The service was great. It looks like it's a family that runs it. The guy that made our sandwiches was really nice.
The selection there surprised me! I didn't know they had steaks and other meats.
If you live in the neighborhood and haven't checked this placed out, I'm going to agree with the other reviewers on here and say check it out. Especially if you are looking for a fresh deli sandwich.
This is your family owned neighborhood shop with all the cousins brothers and of course momandpop. They have a pretty good selction for a corner store and offer great selection of organic options. Not too pricey, but more than you will spend at the grocery store.... not enough to keep my lazy ass from coming here 3 times a day.
BTW
the deli is rockin with their huge, 6dollar sandwhiches, the hummus, the teriyaki chicken AND the best homemade beef kebab.
Fresh produce at great prices. They should be the gold standard for convenience stores. The best. Period.
a block from my house and with pretty much everything i need grocery-wise. some things are on the expensive side ($6 rice krispies cereal?!) but the salmon filets are a total steal and it sure beats hauling heavy bags all the way up the hill from trader joes.
Apparently Mayflower's employees aren't the nicest to ladies. Luckily I don't have to worry about that. 4 stars. This place has great deals on some liquor, which on my scale is automatically at least 3 stars. But the secret of the Mayflower can be found behind the deli, where surprisingly delicious and affordable sandwiches are delicately made throughout the day. My homies at the "M" hooked me up with a phat veggie sandwich. Twas danker than a lollipop.
Everyone's right, this is a fantastic corner store. I love Albert and family down the street at Round the Clock, but I often find myself sneaking over to Mayflower because they stock so much that I love. They carry diet cream soda (the only place nearby that does), Amy's stuffed pasta shells, and CPK barbecue chicken pizza, for only a little more than Cala. They also have my favorite ice cream ever, but I'm not telling anyone the flavor since it's a limited edition. Now that I've read the other reviews confirming the freshness of their deli offerings, I'm eager to try their large selection of sandwich fixins and salads.
The only thing that gets me about this place is that the guys who work there never give me a second look. Not once have they demonstrated even the tiniest flicker of interest. I mean, I know the bloom is fading off the rose, but merely having female parts usually gets me more attention than I'm shown here... *melodramatic sigh*
I'm a lucky, lucky girl.
A few blocks away from me is Cala Foods - - - I reviewed it here.
http://www.yelp.com/bi...
Woe is me.
But right across the street from me is Mayflower Market.
I first entered this store needing milk - - I knew they'd carry that and simply hoped it wasn't expired. Imagine my surprise, though, when I walked in to find not only several varieties of milk, eggs and other basics, but pretty good produce, a full-service deli with cold cuts, FRESH MEAT, a slim selection of actual seafood, too, in addition to all the basics of a liquor store and mini-market.
This store doesn't have a LOT of anything, but a bit of almost EVERYTHING.
Need parsley? Run across the street.
Want a quick salad? Run across the street.
Want some cold cuts? Run across the street.
Want a NY steak? Run across the street.
Want pancake batter? Tabasco Sauce? Juice? Bread? Bacon? Run across the street.
Want wine? Beer? WATER? Run across the street.
Not bad.
Not bad AT ALL!
Service is also extremely friendly and welcoming. I don't think I've encountered one person at this store who doesn't smile at you, or asks you if you need help in finding something. Once, I asked if they had fresh clams (which I needed on that particular evening and was dreading going to Cala for) and they didn't have any, which is perfectly acceptable given the fact it's just a neighborhood market. But the guy was so apologetic about it that I started to feel bad for even asking.
Prices are a bit steep but that is what you get for convenience - - and I am perfectly willing to pay the premium to ensure they stay opened forever.
I just wish they stayed open later, but hey.... you can't have everything.
Short of having a Trader Joe's at your corner block, this is as good as it gets for a neighborhood corner store.
I get alot of stuff here, and I should knock the stars down to three for the pricing, (cause is exPENsive, for the most part). BUUUTTTT.....they are the only place I can find my beloved Hagen Daz Salted Caramel Ice Cream. Yum!!! Thank you Mayflower...and you're so close to my house too...even better. =)
Great great great!
Prices are reasonable, alot more reasonable than the market closer to my place, and I'm always greeted with a smile :)
This is my come-to place when I need fresh produce (bessst strawberries I've found in the area) and sliced turkey meat. Even if i just need some soy milk, or do my weekly sunday groceries, I always leave happy. The sandwhiches are made at a good price and I LOVE their lasagna. Another thing that I enjoyed was just how nice the whole family is. I came in asking if they had broccolini (unfortunately no.. I'm addicted!), and left with maybe 17 things coming to a total of $26. Not bad. Ray also helped me find everything I was looking for and after he found out I was preparing a meal for iftar, he threw in some baklava for me. Now that's what I call GREAT customer service!
Also, 5.5 stars for being open later than most grocery stores
Family owned and the family is sooo friendly (funny too). I was able to get everything I need for a pasta dinner for four for under $15!
Ok, so I have a friend Eric... and he likes to eat a lot of corn... so we go here all the time to get corn for him. Well I don't like corn as much, and I like to branch out and get all kinds of food, and this place really does have all kinds of stuff. Usually it's a drunk ice cream run... but the other day I was going through and found the saffron rice my mom always used to cook... I WAS SO HAPPPPPPY. Like super happy.
It's a nice place and If I had to choose a corner store to go to every time for groceries... this would be the clear winner. And they have corn...
Clean, has a nice variety of items, but unless you are female they will not be the nicest...
I frequent the Mayflower Market often for their very high quality food--especially for the neighborhood markets but sometimes the meat looks like it sits there for awhile. The family that runs the store has always been courteous to me.
So there was a change in ownership last year and I guess now it's not called Fanny's, it's called Mayflower (like the Hotel). But it will forever be Fanny's to me!
The new owners have done a great job in stocking stuff I actually need for everyday - and since it's several blocks closer than skanky old Cala, this is good. Plus, one of the owners is named Eli, and I obviously have a soft spot for that name these days. They don't carry Medaglio though.
It's almost like a supermarket, but smaller. They sell foods without the corner-store mark up. This is what shopping was like in 1928, you actually recognize the people selling it to you, and the question "What produce is good today" will not be met with blank incomprehension.
They don't have the same selection of jerky as a corner store, but they have a deli, which makes for a much better dinner anyway. It's even a good deli, a real good deli. Do you really need anymore?
As a local bodega, this place is the BOMB. I quickly based a menu around what fresh things I could buy from Mayflower when I lived across the street. I moved two blocks away and still go here. Their fresh meats have formed the basis of many of my favorite dishes (italian sausage, ground beef, turkey, new york strip steak, and chicken breasts are sure to be there) and it's way better than going all the way to Cala.
I think I hear an echo on this page...
Huge respect for the family that runs this place. They're all really awesome people. This store is well-stocked and they manage to sell just about everything at reasonable prices. Most produce is readily available, they have a decent deli, they serve up homemade rice pudding from time to time, and their wine selection is excellent. I'm grateful that Mayflower is my neighborhood shop! Definitely the best one I've had in the 9 1/2 years I've lived in the city.
I agree with Amy....cute workers. They're all brothers or cousins or something. They're all related, but all very cute. YUM!
Oh...yeah...rating the business...hmmm...
The deli is actually pretty good. It's great when you want a small "real food" snack on the go. I've often found myself running to meet friends for drinks, and haven't eaten anything. Grab some pasta from the deli and eat it on the MUNI. Yeah, I'm classy like that.
And most of their produce is pretty decent. I think it's the best place to get it around here.
Sonya is right...hoofing it to Cala is fine, but in the long-run, I go for local vendors like these folks, over Cala, anyday!
Dependable for decent produce at decent prices. They have a nice selection of organic stuff and dried goods. They have Boar's head deli meat which is nice, but it's a small store so their meat and seafood selection is limited.
The mark up is a little high on some items, but there are plenty of things there that are worth the price. So I'll be coming back.
This is my friend's neighborhood "corner store" that is not really on a corner. We often come to this place when we need snacks or drinks... and they are always super friendly here. There are a lot of great choices on snacks and things you wouldn't find in a regular supermarket. They also have a great deli selection.
Was in the mood for sandwiches the other day and having recently moved to the city/neighborhood I wasn't sure where to go. Thank you fellow yelppers for recommending this place! My sandwich was delicious. Great meats, good selection of condiments and toppings. Only "complaint" was the bread wasn't the best I've ever had. Not bad, just not anything special. However, definitely a good deal since I think the sandwich was under $6 (I bought other stuff too and wasn't paying attention when it was rung up). As far as the store part of the store, they had a few things I needed and couldn't find at Cala food which was awesome. And, everything was very well priced for being a smaller establishment. Everyone that works there is really nice as well and made you feel like they actually wanted you there, not trying to get you out as quickly as possible like some other "corner" stores.
My wife and I go to Fanny's for 2 reasons...the deli sandwiches and the friendly staff. From what I can tell, this is a family owned and operated place, which is cool to me.
When you need a great, fresh sandwich (where the meat is sliced when you order it) than you can not beat Fanny's. I always get the roast beef and pepper jack cheese on a soft roll and have never been disappointed (especially for a $5.00 sandwich).
The grocery part is a bit pricey in my opinion, but then again, it is a small grocery and not a Safeway :)
Oh Fanny's Market, I am a big fan of thee. You have a great selection of food and the service rocks. All in all, you are a great corner store.
Very very good shop. They tend to have just about everything I could possibly want at a fair price. Cheaper than Safeway, slightly more expensive than Trader Joe's. I tend to go to the Polk St Produce Market for produce, but here for pretty much everything else when I'm not making a Trader Joe's run. An impossibly friendly family & their sons run the place. Great sandwiches, too. Occasionally the mom will be making kebabs that she'll let you sample.
WOW! Thank God you guys are here! First off these guys got everything! Fresh produce, deli meat, they even have a butcher that cuts fresh meat everyday! wow! I mean their prices are fair too, i can always find anything i want. Organic foods, eggs, and MOST OF ALL GREAT SERVICE. I get treated like a V.I.P everytime i go in there. They got wine, organic pastas and oh i get excited when ever i go in there. I don't even go to CALA no more, (PLUS CALA IS CLOSING SOON!) i buy all my groceries from marked mayflower. The guys who work there are super yum too! OMG and they always ask how my days been...maybe they want to know how my nite is going to go. ;)
A dependable store with good quality produce and vegetables. This place tides me over for my general needs. Just today I picked up some tofu, eggplant, spinach, bread, eggs, and (just when you thought I was some kind of health freak) Ore-Ida frozen fries. So what's the lesson here? I might be a freak, but not THAT kind of freak. Oh, and Fanny's is the little shop that's got what I need.
Awesome corner store full of fresh veggies, bread, and a deli. This is actually more of a mini-grocery store. It's perfect if you don't want to walk the extra 4 blocks to Cala Foods.
mother's lasagna
and a crisp pomegranite
the anti-Cala
I just moved into the neighbor hood and was in search of a new market. I walked in and was sure that a corner market would not have my specialty items that I crave so much. But I must say that I am impressed!! They have everything! And what a great selection! Briana's Dressing, Thai Kitchen, Amy's Organics, Great cheeses, Good produce, and a deli counter that has everything I need! The staff seems nice and friendly and they're open late!
The little neighborhood store I keep returning to (despite much competition from other stores across the street). The lady who works there (Fanny? I don't know) is very nice. She makes a mean humus, almost as good as my mother's, but not quiet. Meats are fresh, and they have a decent selection of household neccessities.
Fanny's is great! The mark-up is kinda high but that is to be expected of a mom' n pop corner store. They really have a little bit of everything! I am particularly a fan of the coconut water and yummy deli selection.
I love this place. Ray, Kelley, their mom and pop and the rest of the fam are AMAZING. Grocery selection is extensive and always fully stocked. Their mom makes THE best deli sandwiches. MMM GOOD!
This place has everything. Great selection of drinks, alcohol, deli meat, produce. Reasonable prices. Dope sandwiches. Easily the best corner store in the area. People that work here are really friendly. There's usually a sports game playing on the TV.
My one stop shop for almost everything, milk, eggs, bread, fruits...and i must'nt forget...the best deli meat ever, Boars head meat. Only a few stores in the city actually carry this hard to find brand of meat. But once you try it, you'll almost do anything to find it. Fortunately for me, they have it.
My saviors! I usually go here, when I have no food in the house, or forget to buy something at TJ. I love this place though! The family that owns it is always so incredibly nice. They have pretty decent produce (great for a corner store!) and reaallly good deli. Probably the best sandwiches ever! Oh yeah, and pretty reasonably priced as well. It doesn't hurt that they have a TV to preoccupy yourself as you go into a junk food buying stupor. MmMm chocolate
A nice little corner store. Decent deli selection and they make some really good sanwhiches for 5 bucks. Its pretty much a mini grocery store, but i don't go there to shop. All i go there for is the sandwhiches, cause their pretty cheap and pretty good. I also enjoy a couple dolmas on the side.
I walk several blocks to get here, surpassing other various corner stores, because the deli is boss and the people are nice. Not to mention that the place is super clean and well kept.
they have everything you need, the service is great, and the prices are reasonable for a corner store. my only complaint is that they open a bit later than I would like and close a bit later than I would like. It sure beats round the clock on the opposite corner. Nothing is dusty or gross and the produce is fresh. skip round the clock, head to mayflower!
Super convenient, almost anything you need. AND it's cheaper than Cala without the need for me to walk up a giant hill! This place totally wins.
I gave this place 4 stars because it is the best grocery store within in walking distance (with bags) from me. Oh, and its also a great place. I live alone and for the last month I havent been able to think of anything that I would need that Fanny's does not have. I do not even see the mark up being anything special. I would be paying the same or just few pennies less if I made the hike to safeway. The pastrami deli meat is excellent.
