I'm a little bit confused. The sign outside of the Makawao Courtyard said Market Fresh Bistro, but the menu said Cafe Del Sol. I do have a business card for MFB, so I guess they changed the name, but kept the menu the same.
Anyway, the philosophy of Market Fresh Bistro is "Global Influence...Local Ingredients," and one of their "major goals is to focus on getting the majority of (their) ingredients from within one hundred miles of (their) restaurant." The succulent All Maui Burger special -- with a patty of ground Maui sirloin, Waipoli greens, Kula tomato, Maui onion, avocado aioli, and a side of Maui potato chips -- executed this concept very well.
They also refill your iced tea, or fresh squeezed lemonade, in a biodegradable cup for you to take when you leave. We didn't have any leftovers, but I'm sure those would have been packed in eco-friendly containers, as well.
So whatever the name, I highly suggest enjoying a locally sourced meal under the courtyard tree, in the open Upcountry air, at Market Fresh Bistro.
We were stopping by Komoda for cream puffs after Haleakala sunrise. Unfortunately Komoda was closed so we ended eating breakfast here.
I had the blue crab benedict. The hollandaise sauce, the eggs, and the crab cake were very well done. The tomato was vine ripen and very nice on it's own but it was overwhelmed inside the dish. The roasted potato was good looking but a bit hard for my taste.
I also had a side order of applewood bacon. Absolutely yummy. Wifey and lil girl shared waffles, scrambled eggs, and bacon. All were very well-done.
If there is one thing to complain about, it would be the price. But this is definately a notible place to eat. I wonder what they serve for lunch and dinner.
I love Market Fresh Bistro! Justin, David and Olivia are gracious hosts and serve up the best food on Maui.
The Market Fresh Bistro menu reads like a Maui farm tour, for they use local ingredients. I have met the hens that lay the eggs which are smothered hollandaise...
I own a business next door and can always count on the Bistro for a business lunch or when I need to grab a quick bowl of soup and get back to work.
Dinners are wonderful. My favorite dish was a cold curried watermellon soup with scallops.
This is one of the few restaurants I will actually drive out of Kihei to eat at. The dinner menu is extremely small, usually four entrees (fish, beef, lamb, pork) and some appetizers and salads. Brunch has more options, and is invariably packed.
Their mantra is fresh local food where possible, but it is expensive.
The mains are exceptional. Many places, I have problems with the pairings of the main ingredient of the dish and the secondary items. So for example I will like the steak, but it is served with an insipid and uninspired mashed potato concoction or some other nonsense that detracts from the dish. Here, that is not a problem. Case in point are their short ribs, served with white beans and gravy. Really good taste/texture combination.
Great location in Makawao, especially for brunch, which you can eat outside in a shaded courtyard.
So highly recommend ... if you are a tourist staying in Wailea or Lahaina this would be a great ending to a daytrip to upcountry.
They recently changed owners and names. I checked them out for brunch a couple weeks ago and although the menu was small both of us were very happy with brunch. I had waffles, my friend had the omelet. I kind of wished I'd had her omelet, it had some oyster mushrooms from Makawao Mushrooms and some local asparagus on it too! Delicious. My little waffles were tasty, but I ordered it with strawberries and they must have been running low, because I only got two strawberries, so one star down for that.
Okay, it's expensive wayyyyy expensive and you'd think it would be worth good food? NOT! The sushi tastes either funky or bland. Why eat there when you could eat at Genki Sushi in Kahului for a forth of the price.
Wow. We read about this place in the Maui Times and decided to drive over from Ka'anapali on our last night in Maui. It is fabulous. Bring fine wine to enjoy with your dinner here. Olivia is a welcoming hostess/owner and service is professional and attentive. Chef Justin learned from the best in NYC and here he gets to set his talent loose. Amazing complex flavor fusions, wonderfully fresh, creatively prepared, exquisitely presented. I had the shrimp croquettes and my husband the scallops to start. Followed with the chicken and short ribs and topped off with fresh tiramisu. Did I mention you should bring fine wine? They don't have their liquor license yet but are happy to chill and serve your wine in good glasses. Definitely worth the trip. Next time we will try all three meals-- breakfast, lunch, & dinner. Hats off to this world class chef. Lucky Makawao -- but you won't be able to keep this a secret spot for long!
