I hired Mark last year to help me with a situation where I needed to get a security deposit returned to me. It took a few months for it to all work out, which wasn't Mark's fault. But that is what you should probably expect if you're in a similar situation.
I never actually met Mark in person--we did all of our coordinating over email, which amounted to sending scanned documents and PDFs back and forth. He was really easy to work with. He responded quickly to everything, was very concise and to the point in his communications. After a couple of plot twists and turns, we settled with the landlord, and I received my security deposit, plus the value of the retainer I had paid to Mark. I wasn't really interested in trying to make money off the process--just glad I got back what was rightfully mine and didn't lose any money in the meantime.
It was nice to have Mark Silverman on my side to advocate for me, and I would recommend him to anyone.
As a side note: another reviewer said that you don't have to pay lawyer fees if you don't get your deposit back, and that is not entirely true. You pay a retainer at the beginning when you hire him, and you don't get reimbursed for that unless you can get your landlord to agree to pay you for it (plus your deposit). I think what the previous reviewer meant is that you don't pay additional legal fees if you don't get the deposit back. -

We were able to settle out of court. We got every penny owed to us and the awful landlord who will go unmentioned (but be wary of realtors from Park Ridge) had to pay almost double what he initially owed.
That, and the fact that he kinda looks like Adrien Brody made for an entertaining morning.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Mark Silverman gives lawyers a great name. He knows the law, is on top of things, returns emails swiftly, is clear, concise, highly professional and above all an ethical good-guy who seems to genuinely care about helping people.
During my many years as a renter, he helped me break a lease, successfully handled a complicated law-suit against the sleazy management company I rented from and gave sound advice to a positive result when I was getting the run-around from the final shady landlord I rented from. I cannot recommend Mark enough. When you are in the midst of a living situation gone wrong or are getting the run-around from a dishonest landlord, it can feel like you are totally alone or powerless. Mark Silverman will not only do a fantastic job, but you will have someone honest and direct by your side. -

Mark is attentive, knowledgeable, and efficient. He made the whole process incredibly convenient for me, and I'd recommend him to anyone having a dispute with their landlord.

Don't ever let your shady landlord try to take advantage of you ever again!! Ever!!
If your landlord tries to keep some or all of your security deposit unfairly, go to Mark Silverman. Because of him, I got more than double the amount of my security deposit back even after paying his attorney fees. I barely had to do anything! We also didn't go to court. I didn't even have to meet with him in person, we got everything done via email.
The first lawyer I contacted turned me down because my case was slightly complicated (I had roommates) and also the amount of my deposit was too low to interest him. Then I talked to Mark who was very confident in my case and willing to help me out.
Also, you don't have to pay Lawyer fees unless you get your deposit back.
Best part of all is my evil landlord didn't get away with breaking the rules! And I feel good that she might think twice before trying to pull the same thing with her future tenants! -

Mark did a great job. I had a landlord who was a "real estate lawyer" by trade but, frankly, in my opinion quite possibly among the most incompetent of any lawyer ever certified to practice. She wrote a lease with unlawful provisions. She attempted to enforce the unlawful provisions. She made numerous unlawful entries to show the home to prospective buyers. She and her husband harassed us constantly by phone and email. It was ridiculous.
Anyway, her actions put her in a pretty clear legal bind. Mark helped me negotiate a $9,000 settlement plus return of 95% of my deposit (which was significant). It would have gone MUCH worse for her had this gone to court. Given what others have written about Mark's court manners I almost wish it had come to that.
You would be wise to engage Mark if you have a difficult landlord. -

Mark Silverman is the bomb. This guy makes breaking even the most ridiculous of leases incredibly easy. He does everything for you, and was extremely pleasant. I am not always the easiest client to deal with, and he did a PHENOMENAL job. For a flat fee I was out of my awful apartment.
I will be using Mark again to attempt to get my security deposit back, as I have received nothing.
I would highly recommend his services to anyone. -

I went to Mark Silverman for help retrieving a security deposit from the most ridiculous landlord ever. It took a year and a half (not Mark's fault) and Mark stood by the whole time. Not only did he have to deal with this moron of a guy for a year and a half but, to me, he was extremely helpful, easy to talk to and get along with, and responded very quickly to my emails. It was a difficult case with a VERY difficult, idiotic, scandalous landlord. In the end I came out ahead and the landlord had to pay up. I would recommend Mark to anyone with landlord tenant issues. He a fantastic lawyer and a great guy! Can't go wrong with Mark!

I can't recommend Mark Silverman highly enough. He is patient, professional, and most importantly, successful. I was in an unpleasant living situation and wanted out of my lease. When my landlord told me no, I involved Mark. Mark not only got me out of a lease because it was illegally created, but also got my full security deposit back, with interest. If you are being taken advantage by your landlord, consult and trust in Mark. He will let you know all of your options. For a reasonable flat fee, he answered countless emails from me and kept me up on the situation, as well as produced two legal documents. If you are looking for tenant lawyers in Chicago, Mark is the one you want, hands down.

I consulted Mark Silverman regarding a tricky landlord-tenant situation, and I was extremely impressed with his services. He responded to my email in no time and provided me with clear and concise answers. He presented me with several options, and I negotiated with the landlord based on his advice. By the way, I thought his fees are very reasonable as far as legal fees go. Way to go Mark!!!

This guy is fantastic.
Had a deposit. Landlord kept all of it. Landlord broke some rules. Mark Silverman got involved and I ended up getting deposit back plus a little extra $ for my time (net, he got his fees on top of the reward).
I highly recommend this guy if you ever have any issues as a renter. -

I relocated from Chicago to Atlanta before retrieving my security deposit. The real estate agency kept saying they were going to send it. Well, there's a deadline for repaying that deposit unless you're informed otherwise.
After waiting 45 days after I had moved, I called one attorney who said I didn't have a case. Now mind you, I did every thing by the book. I gave my 30 day notice; the whole nine yards. I then from Atlanta, contacted Attorney Silverman, who not only took my case but won me not only my security deposit but an additional $1000 and all I had to do was send the attorney some documents and show up in court in Chicago. I didn't say not one word in court; in fact I sat in the audience and watched my attorney do his thing. Awesome! He took the time to listen to my complaint and was honest about all fees in which by the way was pre-paid by the attorney and deducted out of the GROSS settlement, kept me informed about every single detail and was even early for court.
Take advantage of this attorney's service while available!
