An update on the furniture since it's been a little over a year:
- The dining set I bought is still in excellent condition (really, it was a fantastic bargain) and I'm thinking about going back to get extra chairs.
- The bed is still fine, nothing special (see my original review for thoughts on the construction and actually putting that thing together--ugh).
- The mattress developed a significant Dawn-sized indentation well before the first year was up. So while it was super comfortable at first, it's not there anymore. I'm thinking next time I should go for the name-brand mattress--buying the no-name probably won't have saved me any money in the long run, since the mattress just doesn't last.
So while I would still recommend that you check Marjen out since the prices are very reasonable (and I really love the dining set I bought), I would think twice before buying a mattress there. That said, it's still a great alternative to Ikea (and we all know how well their furniture lasts, ahem).

Marjen is a great alternative to Ikea. I've been here four times now, and overall they've been good… Read more »
STAY FAR AWAY FROM THESE PEOPLE!!! Honestly, the worst service I have ever received anywhere. They are rude, sleazy and/or possibly mentally unstable. I echo Anna M. and the other folks here.
- We went in looking for something simple - a mattress. An older man, I believe the owner, was "helping us" out. He gave us the usual spiel about no commission, bla bla, and preceded to show us the crappiest mattresses on the market (according to him, the only thing in our price range). All of them were over 200 for really terrible quality.
- The ones we could test were on a kid's bunk bed (and we are almost 30 yrs old). He refused to roll the only one that seemed decent out to us to test it out and kept badgering us. When we mentioned delivery, he acted like we were asking for some dramatic service and offered us a $50 charge, when we live blocks away. We asked him to back off for a moment to think.
- He finally decides, oh you know what, I can show you that one you're interested in. He takes us upstairs, has his delivery guy drag it on the warehouse floor, and has us test it on the wood floor.
- We then ask if there are any deals on tax, etc, and he freaks out. He starts yelling at us and asking, "Would you ask Domick's or a grocery store that question? Huh??" He continues yelling at us, so we walk downstairs and tell him it's not going to work out. He keeps yelling about whether we were just coming to his furniture store for the hell of it and it was just "a stab in the dark." He continues on like someone with Tourette syndrome when we've already walked out the door.
-We walk out and his co-owner chases us, and a SECOND person starts yelling at us. He asks us, "Is this just about 30 bucks or something?" and he keeps yelling us, asking us what our problem is, etc. etc. " and rambling.
Obviously, we never returned and kept walking. Save yourself the trouble and go somewhere where the people aren't completely rude (and possibly insane?).
DO NOT SHOP HERE! About a month ago, I purchased a bed frame. The leg on the frame broke, after less than a month in my home, without any undue stress on the frame. I called Marjen to speak with someone about possibly returning or exchanging the frame, and I was treated incredibly rudely. The person I spoke with became angry and argumentative, and told me that I would have to bring in the frame by myself. (I have no car, and the frame was delivered to my apartment). He then egged me on, trying to get me to use abusive language toward him ("Just say what you really wanna say, come on. Yeah, I thought so," etc.). I ended the phone call. Needless to say, I will be throwing out my defective bed frame with no compensation. What jerks. Never going there again.
This was THE WORST SERVICE I HAVE EVER RECEIVED FROM ANYWHERE. After delivering defective merchandise, the owner "Joe" told me to to call to verify that the delivery people would be out to replace the furniture that they improperly put together, then YELLED AT ME for CALLING. He was rude, belittling and informed me that he did not want to be bothered ... and that it was none of my "damn business" who owned the place. As a customer, yes it is my business. Also, the installers told us it was our problem and that they could do nothing to fix the defective merchandise.
I would not recommend this place to ANYONE. Go here only if you want to make a bad investment in furniture and to receive poor treatment. Defective goods, rude owners and service people, being sworn at, being yelled at = UNHAPPY CUSTOMER.
Note: I've since reported these guys to the BBB (312) 832-0500 and City of Chicago (312) 744-5000 ... was not surprised to learn of the bad BBB rating and that numerous other complainants preceded me.
I bought my current couch here way back in 2003. The price was great--less than $400--and they were extremely helpful during my store visit and afterward. I told them that it would really help me out if they could deliver that day, but it had to be between 1 and 2 (this was a Saturday morning around 11 am). They said, "Well, we can't guarantee anything, but it should be doable." Those guys showed up at 1:30 on the dot; it was amazing. They carried the thing in, screwed on the little feet, unwrapped the plastic and whatnot, and even cleaned up the debris that had fallen on the floor. I tipped them $20 but even before that they were extremely gracious and friendly.
The couch is still in great shape--a bit of fading from the sun, which is to be expected, but no loss of form on the cushions and just a slight fraying on the edge of one. My numbskull friend spilled strawberry juice on it though.
This somewhat of a hidden gem on Devon--honestly if someone had not recommended it to me, I would have completely overlooked it. The store is somewhat cramped to walk around, but walking around the 2 levels is a must. The have all sorts of furniture--we bought a futon with a seriously nice mattress & an awesome desk.
The sales people are not really pushy & you can bargain a bit over the price. They also offer delivery--which is great when you live on a 2nd floor.
I stopped at this place after looking it up on Yelp. It reminded me of a store my parents would have bought furniture at years ago. For the pricepoint, better than average furniture at ridiculously low prices. I bought a couch and also found a European style sofa bed that I had been looking for. They also have catalogs so you can order stuff.
They are quick on delivery. I hate going to bigger stores and being told "the next time we will be doing deliveries in your zip code is..." We live in a society of instant gratification, and I, like everyone else, want my stuff now. I'm a guy so shopping for home furnishings is an ordeal and I thought my sales guy was helpful. I did a lot of looking around around and so I was familiar with what's out there. The couch I got looks sharp and I think people would be shocked to know what I paid for it ($399).
We ended up at Marjen after a good amount of futon shopping for our second bedroom. We wanted something comfortable enough for family visiting to sleep on, but that was still ok as a couch.
The Good: The selection of good quality and affordable furniture was really good and we ended up with something that we were very satisfied with. We had negotiated delivery and set up when we bought it so that was no problem either. The delivery guys were friendly and set the thing up in like 10 minutes.
The Not so Good: Don't walk in this store if you are a pushover. The sales people were very pushy about making the sale TODAY. We weren't forced into buying when we did but it sort of felt like it. And I overheard a different salesperson somewhat forcefully suggesting to other customers that there was no point in coming back another day, they should buy it now.
If the staff eased up somewhat on the hard sell this would be a perfect place to get furniture in Chicago. So, if you can manage to stay on your own terms, you'll get a great price and a great product.
Since I ran away from Hollywierd in 1991 and moved back to sweet home Chicago. I have shopped at Marjen 5-6 times and the owners and salesmen are always the nicest and friendliest!
They show you many options of what you came looking for, the deliveries are always on time and if you want anything set up, they will do it.
I love Marjen as a place for reasonable furniture.
Nice service, great deals.
The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the front plank of my oak futon craked totally through after 1 year!!! My pillowtop mattress is like sleeping on a cloud & I paid less than $350...including delivery.
Worth looking into.
Shady. When I bought the mattress/frame, they said set-up was free. When it got there, the delivery guys refused to set it up, and said it was not included.
Possibly the worst experience I have ever had.
I took the Yelper's advice and went to Marjen vs. Affordable Portables. The selection was great and the price was awesome!
The salespeople were the worst that I have ever encountered. After some haggling, we reached a price that we were happy with. They had to order the futon we picked and we were very weary about that. They were using lines like "what can we do to get this done today?" - like your typical used car salesmen...
We were guaranteed that it would be in our house by June 8th.
We called for two weeks to make sure that this date was okay. "Yeah, no prob". As the date approached and to make final delivery plans, we were told, verbatum, "It's June 4th, what are you complaining about".
We were "complaining" because no one returned calls.
We were not told when the futon would arrive
We were told that the shipment from CA would arrive "any day now"
We were told that they cannot track shipments
and then... last minute, we were told that they do not deliver on Sunday and there was no way that we would have our futon on the original guaranteed date.
Long story short, we returned to the store and asked for our money back. We ended up buying at Roy's Furniture in Lincoln Park. A thousand times better in terms of quality and customer service.
Marjen has some great prices and the selection is decent. The sales people are horrible, pretty cheesy and most important, do not care about the customer once the credit card goes through.
Go to Roy's. You'll be surprised at the affordability.
Excellent place to go to for cheap furniture. I got a queen size bed and mattress for around $300. Not the nicest bed ever, but it was cheap and gets the job done. This is not the nicest store and the sales people could be nicer, but otherwise good.
I wasn't sure how to rate this one.
I went in there Sat. and was greeted by a loud, pushy salesman who didn't seem to want me there. Too bad, your sign said "Open." I obviously interrupted his conversation with a man who looked like he slept there the night before.
I asked why they put Velcro underneath the cushions, he scowled and told me that they don't make couches without Velcro anymore. Are you high? I had never encountered that phenomenon until I moved here. Sorry, but if I shell out $$ for a new couch, I want to be able to flip the cushion.
The store: dark, crowded, rude service, Velcro "so the cushions won't slip off" cheap for a reason. I gave it an extra star for being on the sunny side of the street.
I LOVE this place! I go there everytime I move (which is once a year) to buy something new. They can assemble and deliver same day if possible. The guys are SUPER friendly. If they seem a little over bearing, I just tell them to leave me alone - and they do. And the prices are great!! I bought my couch, 2 bookcases, coffee tables and chest of drawers there and plan on going back as many times as I can!
Mattress $200. Couch, $400. Dining table, $250. Having real, new furniture in your apartment for a song? Priceless! Granted, the couch and mattress didn't last very long, but I still have the table.
This is a great place to buy furniture in Chicago, without paying more at the large furniture warehouses or having to trek out to IKEA, only to assemble the furniture yourself (a girl's worst nightmare). It's located on Devon between Broadway and Clark. The guys that all work there are really friendly, and sometimes pushy, trying to sell you. Just let them know to back off and that you'll grab them when you're ready to talk about buying, and they'll be cool about it. I bought my leather couch, leather chair, and cushiony tan sofa that my dogs have overtaken as their big dog bed all at Marjen. The prices are reasonable and the furniture is durable, still looking brand new (minus the tan couch from the dog wear and tear). They have delivery as well and the delivery guys have always been friendly and will arrange your furniture for you. I highly recommend going there and looking around. The prices are great, the quality is great, and they run specials quite frequently.
Great place. I got a very nice, very comfortable mattress for about $500 and plan on going back to get a new platform bed for it. I don't know what the bad reviews are all about, I think this place is great, good deals, nice people, and quality furniture!! Love it, and will return frequently!!
I don't know why it took me so long to write a review about this place. I had just moved here from Florida, and didn't bring any furniture with me. I moved into a two room studio in February, and needed a bed ASAP. I looked in the yellow pages and this was the first place I called. Expecting to pay a minimum of $800 for a queen size pillow top bed (I didn't want to cheap out), and worried that without testing it out first, I was afraid for the worst. I called and a really friendly man picked up the phone. First of all, let me tell you that I'm super picky about my bed. I've laid on so many in furniture stores, etc. and still had never found one that I remotely liked. But I was desparate and just needed something to sleep on. Anyway, the guy on the phone asked me what kind of bed I was looking for. I told him that I wanted a queen size, pillow top (one that has ALOT of pillow top stuffing on top), but is firm underneath. He seemed to know exactly what I wanted. He said my bed would be delivered in about an hour, and the total cost, including the platform, solid wood frame, would be about $665 with tax and delivery included. Now, let me tell you. These people delivered my bed faster than a pizza! They put together the wood platform frame for me, and even managed to fit the thing in the TINY space that was in the other room of the studio. Within 45 minutes of calling, I had a bed, installed in my house. It came with a lifetime warranty, was up to the standards that haven't even come out yet for being fire resistant, and the bed to this day is the most comfortable bed I've ever slept on. I'm really picky, and would RARELY give anyone 5 stars, but all around, this place is DEFINITELY somewhere that I would recommend getting your bed.
The worst store I have even seen. The store mangers are rude and force you to buy their furniture. If you don't buy it, and they are very agree with you. Be careful!!! If you buy anything there, you can not return it. They are going to condemn you to hell.
