So it would be about a week ago I came in here ordering a red velvet cake for my fiance's birthday. Ever since, we've been eating a slice of cake for dessert everyday.

Yesterday he weighed himself and he gained...FIVE pounds!!! I think he's been sneaking in slices while I'm at school. I know it...

WOW, there are a lot more reviews from the last time I checked this place up on yelp.

This place is owned by an older and friendly interracial black/filipino couple and they do all the work in the bakery. They know that they have the best red velvet cake in California!  I didn't get to try the sweet potato pie yet because it wasn't in season.  The red velvet cupcake is wonderful with pecan frosting or plain frosting.  I will be making sure that I order a cake for thanksgiving from here and indulge every one with the moistest & tastiest red velvet ever.

Honestly...the BEST red velvet cake ever i've had thus far in life. I also love the fact that it is a local mom & pop bakery as I truly value & support local businesses. They are owned by a nice couple who've been married for many many years...very welcoming and personable. It doesn't have the "nice appeal" as the new chain cupcake stores like sprinkles & karas...but definitely makes up for it in quality and taste. Prices are reasonable & HUGE portions. I paid $5.50 for 2 ginormous red velvet cupcakes (you usually get one small one for nearly that price at sprinkles or karas). Very moist, decadent, and not too too sweet just how I like it.

They also have a variety of other "exotic" cakes, such as sweet potatoe pie, banana, carrot, etc that i need to try next. Will definitely be coming back!

Finally tried this place today and got 2 slices of red velvet cake, one with pecans and regular. It was off the hook! This is my second time trying the style of cake and this is hands down waayyy better. Its a little whole on the wall that i guess has been there for 10 years, funny part is i grew up in San Leandro my whole life and didn't know of the hidden talent. I guess the owners are the filipina lady and african american man (husband and wife).

Definately will be going back on the next wife's craving....

That picture of the couple was definitely taken in the 80s. Pretty charming and adds that mom & pop feel to the place

I got the red velvet cake everyone raves about. We could not finish it even with everyone eating two slices. Its huge for $23!

Great deal

OMG. I am sitting here at my office desk and HAD to Yelp. Someone here at Kaiser brought in a red velvet and german chocolate cake for a co-worker's going away party. When I saw the HUGE cakes, I just about fell over in my ballet flats, but when I actually ATE my first, second, third bites.... I ran back to my desk to Yelp. These are the two BEST, most delicious cakes I have ever eaten! I am not kidding and I am not exaggerating. WOW, these are good!!!

My friends and I attended the Montclair Wine & Jazz Festival this afternoon after hiking at Lafayette Reservoir.

One of the booths that we stopped at was Marita's Sweet Potato Pie Company.  My friends bought the Red Velvet Cupcake  with the plain cream cheese frosting and I bought the one with the pecan cream cheese frosting.  OMG!!!!  It is by far the best red velvet cupcake that I have ever had.  Very moist and not overly sweet.  It is huge, so I'm going to savor it over the next couple of days :-)

We paid a little more for it ($4) because it was at a festival, but that was to be expected.  Next time I'm in San Leandro, I'm going to buy some more.  I also want to try their sweet potato peach pie.  One of my friends had a sample and loved it!

A house BBQ party & you want to bring something that everyone will enjoy, but what? I say you can NEVER go wrong w/ Marita's Red Velvet Cake *YUMMY*! ...that is hoping no one is alergic to chocolate ^-^

LOCATION: On the North-East corner of Dutton Ave & Bancroft Ave in San Leandro; opposite side of Safeway. You can't miss it http://www.yelp.com/bi...

CUST SVC: Always with smiles & friendly =)

BAKERY: Probably heavist staffed in the morning w/ everyone in the kitchen prepping all baked goods. Red Velvet Cake is "always" in stock throughout the day, but if you want options from ALL their baked goods, always suggest to try & get in here btw morning-afternoon. There's still plenty I need to taste from here.

SWEET TREAT: On yesterday's Saturday morning visit I got the 9" 2-layer Red Velvet Cake no pecans http://www.yelp.com/bi... for $23. Straight out the fridge upon pickup 10am-ish...cake icing slightly melted down after a 20min detour drive, but finally making it to Hayward to help prep for afternoon BBQ, & put cake back in fridge.

FINAL SMILES: Marita's Red Velvet Cake was a BIG HIT with a group of about 22 people...and no one was alergic to chocolate ;-)

One word: Drool.

That's what you'll be doing when you step inside Marita's Sweet Potato Pie co. It's interesting to me that the store is called Sweet Potato Pie, but they label themselves 'Home of the Red Velvet Cake'- Whatever, all i know is they're doing BOTH incredibly right!

The red velvet cake is thick, moist, and terribly tasty. The frosting is sweet and the pecan topping on top is nice and crunchy. The sweet potato pies are awesome, too! Not as sweet as a pumpkin pie, but sweet enough that for a guy like me(a pumpkin pie over potato pie fan) i'd would be willing to come back and pick up a pie for no special occasion!

The shop itself is no frills- just cakes and pies. The older gentleman who helped was a little quiet and seemed kinda grumpy, but the lady who helped us was very energetic lol. I was surprised by how many different cakes and pies then had there! Peach, apple, pecan, cobbler, you name is they had it! I'll definitely be coming back to try them ALL out!

The big gigantic red velvet cupcakes caught my eye as I walked pass the Charlie Frank's Pies stall at the Stonestown farmers market.

So after picking up all of my produce I returned to the stall to purchase a red velvet cupcake with pecans (http://static4.px.yelp...) and a peach cobbler upside-down cake (http://static3.px.yelp...).  There were sample cups of the sweet potato peach pie available.  I don't eat a lot of sweet potato, but the samples were very good.

As I took my treats to go the man at the stall told me not to share the peach cobbler cake because I wouldn't be getting it back.  I wasn't sure what he meant at the time, but now I know.  Dare I say that I may have found a cake to rival the strawberry shortcake at Bakesale Betty's.  The peach cobbler cake was delicious.  The cake isn't very sweet and it's soft and moist.  I loved that the cake was dense and didn't fall apart.  The peach topping tasted very fresh and had just a hint of brown sugar to it.  Even with my big appetite I couldn't finish the big piece of cake in one sitting.

The big red velvet cupcake looked like it was just thrown into the plastic container then more cream cheese frosting was added on before they squished the container closed.  I'm thankful for that because the soft, creamy frosting heavily laced with crunchy pecan pieces was the key to this cake.  The cake wasn't as dense as the one used for the peach cobbler cake.  In fact, it was crumbly almost like what you get with cake mix.  It's good that the cake wasn't very sweet because the super sweet frosting took care of that, but overall I don't think I would buy this again.

I keep wanting to like this place and I just don't I have tried a variety of their cakes and been unhappy with them. The banana cake has a chemical taste, like too much fake banana flavoring. The frostings are overly sweet. I do like the gingerbread with cream cheese frosting but that's about it. The chocolate cake wasn't very chocolate-y. And the red velvet had an odd oily texture and the flavor was just off. I love red velvet cake and have sampled it in many places - this does not make the cut.

After reading so many reviews on this place and contemplating after many weeks whether I'm going to order my teacher's cake here, I decided heck why not!
I ordered the cake on Thursday and it was ready for pick up at 9am, right when they opened. The price for a 9" red velvet cake wasn't too bad, $22 for cake and if you want decore on it (which I did) $30. The size and the taste was so worth the 30 bucks. As I carried the cake to my car, I was like "O shiz this thing is heavy!" The red velvet decadence with the cream cheese filling, was wow! Although it was a little too sweet, it was still good! My friends and teachers all had sugar rush then hit a sugar coma at 10:30AM..priceless.
I also got a huge cupcake (like the size of a cheeseburger at McD's) for my mom. She liked it cuz of its soft fluffiness, even though it stayed on ice in my car for 5 hours, but also said it was a little too sweet.
All in all, if I ever need a red velvet cake and I'm in the East Bay, I'd hit this place and so should everyone else!

This bakery is a little hole-in-the-wall looking joint on the outside, but they sell some of the most INCREDIBLE red velvet cake I've ever had!  The cake is dense but moist and the cream cheese frosting is rich and thick.  Their cake is one of my favorite stick-to-your-ribs comfort foods.  Their other cakes are okay and I've ever tried any of their pies - but whenever I'm in the area, I definitely pick up a few of their red velvet, either by the slice or their cupcakes.  Their cupcakes are HUGE...the size of a large softball...and you can have them with or without pecans; their good either way.  DELICIOUS!!

I picked up a red velvet cupcake from Charlie Frank's Pie stand at the Stonestown farmer's market the other day. $3 for a giant cupcake is not a bad price. The cake part was good. Moist and not overly sweet. The frosting I had problems with. Very sweet and sugary with a grainy texture. It's more like icing than frosting. It got sickening after 2 bites.

I also don't like the way the cupcakes were packaged. They're in these plastic containers that are too small. When you open the lid, half the frosting comes off the cupcake as it's stuck to the top of the box. It did not look appetizing....

Someone just delivered one of these Red Velvet cakes to me in Portland and damn it's some good stuff.

Nice thick velvety red cake and amazingly delicious cream cheese frosting. That's all it is. But it's so good I could eat a whole one.

I hear they make sweet potato pie too? OMG from the qual of this cake, I can only guess that the sweet potato pie is BANGIN'!

Nom nom nom! Red velvet cupcakes! HUGE! So tasty.

Mmk, now that I got that out of the way. You can't beat a $2.50 red velvet cupcake from a mom & pop shop that's big enough to share!

I intend on buying their cakes every chance I get, housewarmings... thanksgiving, birthdays, thank yous, etc etc etc.

I take 1 star away because I think they overuse the red food coloring, it makes everything turn red (if you know what I mean.) And it's a touch, a touccch, on the sweet side. Even for me.

This place rocks beyond belief!  Definitely a place to avoid if you are watching your sugar intake.  The Red Velvet (cupcake or full size cake) is better than any I have ever had.  And as a southern girl, that is saying something.  Portions are huge, a red velvet cupcake is more than enough for two and they come with or without nuts in the frosting.  The variety of sliced baked goods is great. If you can't make up your mind, buy two different items and share. The proprietors and their staff are super sweet.

It's funny that a place that advertises their Red Velvet Cake so adamantly is called a Sweet Potato Pie Co.  I don't think I even saw sweet potato pie in there!  It's probably because my eyes zeroed in on the HUGE red velvet cupcake.  Which I purchased.

The cake is heavier/denser than others I've had but the flavor is top notch.  There was a good proportion of cream cheese frosting.  It made the cupcake stick on the top of the container when I opened it (yes, the cupcake filled the container to it's capacity it was so big!)

This only applies to their red velvet cake...

My hubby brought home a 9-inch 2-layer red velvet cake w/ pecan frosting from Marita's and it's the best red velvet cake I've tasted so far!!!

I've never had one with pecan frosting so I pretty much squealed with delight once I saw the cake =D.  I seriously could not stop smiling at the cake!  Haha!  It was moist and the frosting wasn't too thick or too sweet.  I've seen a few reviews where people have complained about the cupcakes having too much frosting, but having gotten the cake - the ratio of frosting to cake was perfect, hehe!  Trust me, they did not skimp on taste or portions.  The cake height was definitely over 4 inches (about 4 1/4-4 1/2 inches)!!!

Yummy and extremely reasonably priced!  He paid about $24 (that's including tax!)  We're definitely going back!

I will post pics later today!

I've never physically been here but I've driven buy. Does that count?

On many occasions my friend has brought Marita's Red Velvet cake to our functions. They are always a crowd pleaser. Bright red and moist cake topped off with an awesome cream cheese frosting. This is the kind of cake that you eat because it tastes gooood and not because it's pretty or well decorated. No fuss or muss here. Just good old Red Velvet cake.

This is the place to go for cake in san leandro and the prices are very reasonable . I  have only had the red velvet cake but that alone is enough to keep coming back for . Although I do wonder about the amount of food coloring they use , I think that it may have disagreed with the rest of my body so that is something to think about . Aside from that the cakes all seem very fresh and are generously sized .

I love cake...The mark of a fantastic cake, is that it's hella good on it's own without any frosting.

I picked up a Marita's Red Velvet cupcake with pecan cream cheese frosting at their booth at the Fillmore Jazz Festival this past weekend.  It was $5, but it's freaking huge, I think it would serve at least 2 people.

This cupcake met my criteria...I ended up eating all of the cake - very delicious and moist, definitely authentic red velvet flavor, not too chocolatey, not too sweet.  I had to cut off the top off and toss it after one bite of frosting, that part was way too sweet, greasy and thick, but I think frosting is meant to be that way in general.  It would be great if they had a no frosting option (I know, that's sacrilege!), they don't need it, the cake was really moist and flavorful without.

This red velvet was definitely the real deal, neither Sprinkles or Kara's red velvet can step to this.  Only funny part was that my tongue turned red afterward and I had pink toothbrush bristles after I tried to brush my teeth!  I guess that's the price you gotta pay.

I give them 3 stars, since I've only tried one item so far.

I learned two things from Marita's Sweet Potato Pie Company.

1. The red velvet cake here is quite possibly the most delicious thing on the planet. The cake was soft and moist, the cream cheese frosting and cheesy and frosty. I bet that if you could eat angels this is what they would taste like.

2. Red food coloring goes in red and comes out red. So don't panic the first time after you eat half a cake (believe me, it's not hard to do, moderation, people!). It's just the red food coloring going about its way.

Tried the red velvet cupcake and the red velvet cupcake with the pecan frosting. They were pretty cheap- about $2.50 i believe. and oh boy, the serving is huge!! TOTALLY worth the money! Kinda wish I tried the red velvet cake, instead of two cupcakes (I should've listened to the bf, darn!) but oh well. I don't know if i'd say it's the best red velvet i've ever had, but it was still pretty darn good!! ESPECIALLY for the price!! By the way, i think they're having a sale this weekend? This has got to be one of the better places for red velvet cake since I had it in... Mississippi.  Don't you hate it when people say stuff like that?  Mentioning great foods in immediately unreachable locations.

Now this place is owned by a couple, as you may have noticed from the picture on the storefront.  I phoned in an order for a 9" red velvet cake without pecans ($23) and asked for it to be ready two days later.  The man who took my order talked very slowly and when I visited the store, he turned out to be a cute, elderly man as I had suspected.

I found metered parking on Dutton Ave. and walked on in.  It was a rainy day so there weren't that many visitors but I saw that they were fully stocked with all types of cakes and goodies!  It's good to know that I can come in randomly for a sweet fix.  The red velvet cake was HUGE.  It can literally feed about 10 people, and maybe even more, because 9" is a lot bigger than you think and the cake is a lot thicker than you think too.  I like how the cream cheese frosting is a thinly generous layer so that it's not overpowering.  Some may say it's sloppily frosted but I honestly think that gives it an even homier, my-mom-baked-it type feel.  The cake is moist throughout with the exception of some of the edges.

A humble looking, locally owned bakery that I will definitely visit again.  They take debit but no checks or bills over $100.

90 reviews, with an average of 4.5 stars should tell you enough.  This place is D-LISH.  I rarely get time off these days, and when I do the first thing on my mind is some Red Velvet Cake from Marita's.  After a good lunch, I make my way there and am happily greeted by Mr. Brown, Marita, and the yummy selections that await my decision.  I ALWAYS pick up a slice of the red velvet, which IS the best in town, and pick a different second item.  Their sweet potato pies are heavenly, as is their pecan tart.  A definite Must-try if you're in the area.

For living in San Leandro for more than 20 years...I sound so old, I never knew that there was this Diamond in the rough so close to me in proximity called Marita's Sweet Potato Pie co. but known more so for their Amazing Red Velvet Cakes. We bought two for my younger sister's graduation and it was gone so fast that we were ready for another run.

I love these mom and pops shops which literally are own by a beautiful couple who proudly display their success and love for one another on their signs and flyers. As you gobble up any of their yummy desserts, you can tell on the very first bite that this was made with love and authentic gifted hands.

I am very happy that I will never have to drive more than 1.3 miles to get good Red Velvet!

I've only seen Marita's cakes at the Grand Lake Farmer's Market. Today, I had the pleasure of visiting the actual shop.

For a cool $2.50, you can get a red velvet cupcake with pecan frosting that this large enough to share with 1-2 other people....if you're willing to share...we only children don't like to share....

SUCK ON THAT, SPRINKLES!!!!!!

Oh yeah. They have pies, other cakes, and bread pudding as well.

Oops. I was supposed to give up sweets for Lent.

After numerous times of being treated to some Red Velvet cake from Marita's, I felt it was about time I went to see Marita for myself...and well, I actually did, literally!

Last week, I dropped by the store/bakery/Sweet Potato Pie Co. whatever you'd like to call it and after walking in and dealing with their little door sensor noise thing, my mouth instantly started to water!   There it was, the precious Red Velvet Cupcake!  I've never got so excited about dessert, much less a cupcake in my life.  But, I gotta say, this is no ordinary "cupcake."  They're the freakin size of those steroid-muffins they sell at Costco.

Then there there she appeared coming from the back, Marita herself!.  She looked busy as she had an apron on and wearing a hair net but greeted me and took the time to show me their different sweet offerings.  Plain and simple my mind was on the RVC so without even asking as to how much it is, I asked for three of the cupcakes.  She rang it up and I saw her 2.15 on the register.

2.15?  That can't be right, that must be the cash register code for the RVC, which I was expecting to pay at least $4.00 each.  NOPE, I was stoked that it really was $2.15 each.  For that mega huge cupcake?  Oh man, I was so much more excited that I wanted to buy more!

I gotta try their other stuff but I sooo heart their RVC.  It's so moist and the frosting...ugh...I licked the container clean!!!  DE-LISH-ME...not "us"  because it's all for ME!  mwahaha!

Now that I've officially been to MSPPC, I can honestly say without any hesitation:  EAT THIS SPRINKLES and your overpriced booby looking cupcakes!!!!!!

This place is in the cuts of San Leandro.  Let's just say I never make it to this side.  But since I was heading there we decided to make a pit stop.  We ordered a slice of chocolate cake with white frosting, peach cobbler cake, sweet potato pie, red velvet w/ cream cheese frosting, and red velvet w/cream cheese frosting w/chopped pecans.  Chocolate cake was for my son, nothing special.  The peach cobbler was for my hubby.  When he took his first bite he spit it right out.  He saw some furry friends on the cake aka MOLD!  What the hell are you selling old (_I_) cake for?!  That was a BIG disappointment because I wasn't going to make that trip all the way back there just to bitch & complain.  So, I am doing it on Yelp.  Other than that the hubby said it was dry anyway.  After all that drama the Red Velvet save them from getting less than 3 stars.  But if it weren't for the moldy cake then I would have bumped it up a star.  The Red Velvet was Delicioso, not too sweet, very moist, and Huge with a capital "H".  However, it's not as pretty and cute as Sprinkles, Kara's, or Sibby's cupcakes.  But it is cheap for a huge regular red velvet cupcake $2.50 and red velvet cupcake w/ pecan cream cheese frosting is $2.75.  They shove this big cupcake into a plastic container smothered in frosting.  But it's all good because it something you won't be staring at for long.  You will want to devour it right away.  I do like the fact that you can also buy slices and small cake sizes big enough to feed a small family.  Sweet Potato pie is also a winner.  I love pumpkin pie but my hubby doesn't.  After having the Sweet Potato pie he said he definitely likes it a lot better than pumpkin pie.

OMG the red velvet cake is awesome! I'm glad they sell individual slices (I like the ones with the pecans). I haven't tried their pies yet but they looked yummy too.

I was craving for red velvet cupcake on weekday but didn't want to drive 20+ miles just to get my fix. I searched Yelp for a bakery closer to where i live that is selling RVC and came across Marita's. I'm glad i made that trip coz I looooove their red velvet cake. I got 3 slices for a little over 10 bucks --- so moist, yummy and really good. The frosting wasn't too sweet. I'm absolutely a fan.
