Neighborhood: Oltorf/East RiversideCheap seafood...the thought scares me. But more important than food poisoning is a great price. If I happen to be in the bathroom for the next eight hours screaming for St. Jude, so be it. But there's no need to worry about gastrointestinal explosions here...at least, from my first visit.
East Riverside is a depressing, strip-mall, college student apartment road that I like to pretend doesn't exist. So when I walked into Marisco's, I had low expectations. But the faux-seaside, pretend you're in the muddy waters of the Texas Coast decor really fooled me. I felt like I had just come in from wading through Galveston's tar beach.
I started off with a dozen fresh oysters, for only $8.25. For that price, I didn't care if they had been sitting out overnight. But they were actually surprisingly fresh and quite large. The only thing missing was fresh horseradish, and I didn't know how to ask for that in Spanish.
The bowl of gumbo was actually pretty darn delicious. Tons and tons of baby shrimp that melted in my mouth like chocolate candies on a hot summer day. But they didn't taste like chocolate.
So if you need to get your seafood on and visit some shady erotica stores, plus a splash of discoteca, Marisco's is calling your name.

I love this place, just because it has great food in huge portions and for really cheap. They definitely don't skip on the seafood here like some other places. I had a huge shrimp quesidlla and it was overflowing with small fried shrimp, all for about seven bucks. Usually I eat all or most of my food when I go out to eat, but this time I took almost half of it home. I liked the atmosphere too, laid back and a general Mexican feel. The people were really nice, it wasn't too crowded, plenty of parking. But overall the food was the best part of it, I will definitely be back.
