I should have known what I was in for as I approached the restaurant from the back. It was a sign and I should have got back in my car. Outside the kitchen door were empty boxes of frozen meatballs, frozen breaded eggplant and large containers of balsamic vinaigrette. Although the website states hand cut veal, the veal cutlet my wife ordered certainly didn't look or taste like it. The food wasn't bad but nothing you won't find in the frozen food section of your local super market. If you're looking for a restaurant to celebrate an event or an honest well thought out meal, keep driving.

If I could give it a  "zero" star rating, I would....

My husband and I went here on our first night of vacation, thinking that anyplace that had been there since 1954 must be doing something right.  Well, the only thing they did right was not charge us for my husband's "Fettucine Alfredo", which was so bad, he ate only a few mouthfuls.  I took a taste of the sauce, and was very surprised at how gritty it was and at how tasteless it was.

I ordered Cannelloni with Lamb, which was large tube-shaped pasta stuffed with ground "spiced" lamb.  The meat and spices weren't too bad, but the "tomato sauce" was a joke--weak, watery, flavorless.  I'm not kidding when I say I've had better Italian food at Papa Gino's.

Save your money and go elsewhere.  Or better yet, if your motel room has a kitchen, buy a jar of sauce and a box of pasta and a can of "grated parmesan".  You'll be better off.

F.Y.I.--If you've noticed all the quotation marks I used, that's because this "food" is only masquerading as Italian.

Based upon a dinner on May 24, 2008.

    1. Slow service. Really slow. All throughout the entire meal.
    2. Poor service. Missing plates. Missing utensils.
    3. Mediocre to lousy food. Manicotti was OK, but the Veal Saltimbocca was one of the worst concoctions that I ever seen. Spinach and veal swimming (in the deep end) in a pool of oil.
    4. Average wine prices, but a very weak selection.

This is a tourist-focused restaurant in a tourist town and it shows. They just don't care. You will never be back anyway so indifferent service and crappy food is the way to go.

The sad part is that we wanted to enjoy our meal. Our daughter had just graduated from university in NYC and we decided to take a few days of down-time in Lake George. The funny part is that I probably ate at Marios when it first opened in 1954 as my parents would take us to Lage George and Marios is the kind of "fancy", affordable restaurant they would have taken me to.

Not good, when edible is the best you can say, it is just not good enough to warrant $20-30.00 entrees. Linguini with clams was short on clams or a good olive oil.  Gnocchi was not homemade, the calimari was either frozen or badly overcooked.....avoid. Service was good.

We weren't expecting much from the restaurants in Lake George given how fantastically hokey this place is, but we decided to give Mario's a try despite it's tacky rose interior and cursive neon sign. We should have just cooked in our rented cottage.

To start, the service was extremely slow, and often forgetful. After being seated it took forever to even get a glass of water, and when the bread (warm) finally came we had to ask for bread plates (of which we only received two for our party of three). One positive was that the wine was reasonably priced, but this hardly makes up for the rest of the meal. The included house salads were okay--be sure to go with the creamy house Italian, not the blue cheese that tasted like the dressing truck had merely passed by the blue cheese truck on the highway. At a place like Mario's you shouldn't expect great blue cheese dressing, but one can hope.

My companions ordered the cheese ravioli with meatballs and the manicotti with sausage. These entrees were all that could be expected--the marinara was okay along with the meatballs. The ravioli was very clearly not house-made and undercooked, unlike the sausage that our waiter boasted was made that morning. The sausage was good, but certainly not to die for.

MY mistake was ordering the Veal Saltimbocca. While I know that veal can be a risk, I figured it would be decent given that an entire section of the menu was devoted to the meat. The veal was the ONLY good part of the dish. Imagine decent veal with a meager amount of flavorless prosciutto stuck to the bottom, covered with--dare I say--too much melted mozzarella, smothered with a greasy and overly sweat Marsala sauce. Lest you think that these faults were not damning enough, the "bed of spinach" upon which the veal was supposed to be laid would more properly be described as a swamp of spinach. Clearly the spinach was not fresh but frozen and then cooked to death to become a soupy, greasy mess.

The Saltimbocca was the worst part of the meal, but other problems include an order of extra sauce for the ravioli that never came, useless lettuce leaves used as a garnish on the entrees (is fresh parsley too much to ask for?), and a weak "cappuccino" (a term which I use loosely). Additionally, a $7 split charge is nothing short of criminal.
All in all, the only enjoyable part of the meal was spending a good deal of energy criticizing it while we ate. To recap: the service was slow and forgetful, and the food ranged from horrendous to mediocre. If you come to Lake George, expect to enjoy the sun and the water, not the food.

What a disappointment! We ordered penne in vodka sauce with grilled chicken and penne with garlic and broccoli. Very bland taste, couldn't believe how bad it was. Do yourself a favor and stay away from this establishment.

I'm discovering that the way to eat in the Capital Region (broadly construed...) is not to fight it -- rather than struggle with flavorless burritos, overly-sweet stir frys, and sushi that tastes like it spent a week in the sun, the answer is to forget all about your exotic cuisines and go for what the Capital Region does best: old-school Italian.  I went to Mario's a few weeks back after a day of x-c skiing in the wonderful late-season snow at Garnet Hill, so I had quite an appetite.  Mario's did not disappoint.  First off, when they brought the bread, they also brought a delicious eggplant tapenade / bruschetta topping -- this may have been a special for Easter but it was a great touch.  Then we had one of the appetizer specials -- hot peppers, stuffed with prosciutto-wrapped mozarella, in a marinara sauce -- what a combination: hot, salty, creamy & perfectly balanced.  After that was a  round of soup - one of the specials, a bean and beef soup that was a perfect change.  Followed up with the chicken saltimbocca served with ziti and marinara, about half of which ended up as carry-out for my lunch the next day.  Service was very attentive and friendly. Didn't order from the wine list since it was mid-afternoon and I had to drive.  I wish I found this place (just off 87 at the Lake George Village exit) earlier in the winter -- it's a perfect post-ski meal.  But I'll be back in the summer as well.
