Review Highlights
My initial reaction when my friend took me here for dinner was "we are going to a bakery for dinner? WTF!"
Oh, was I wrong or what. This probably is one of the best restaurants in Colorado Springs and I loved everything about this place. Awesome food (try their mussel special), nice atmosphere, and great service.
I would definitely come here again if I am in Colorado Springs
The woman at the front desk of our hotel recommended Marigold to us. I was a little skeptical about eating dinner in a strip mall but this place surpassed all my expectations. The decor wasn't anything fancy, and we got away with wearing jeans although some people were a little more dressed up.
I took a risk and ordered the roasted chicken. My nerves were calmed when a very moist and well seasoned dish showed up. It wasn't dripping in sauce, but there was just enough to coat my mashed potatoes and whatever vegetable I had (that I can't recall at this moment.)
My dad also really liked his dish and ended up taking the leftovers home. The wine list was comprehensive yet modest. All in all we had three glasses of wine and two entrees for around $60. Not too bad!
We tried this place based on verbal recommendations from two different locals. They both said that Marigold's is the best restaurant near the Garden of the Gods and one of the best in the area.
Food was outstanding, especially the crab cake appetizer. Marigold was packed on a Friday eve and I would go back again if I was in the area.
Consistently excellent food, which is a hard thing to find in the Springs. The regular menu is always tasty, if somewhat predictable. If you want something a little different, order from the specials list, which is frequently innovative. Marigold is also one of the few places in town that offers excellent fish dishes at very reasonable prices.
One of the things I miss most about Colorado Springs. French-inspired contemporary bistro.
Marigold's has spoiled me forever with their fabulous desserts. Creme brulee, tiramisu, flourless chocolate cake, fruit tarts - all fabulous.
I started eating here when they opened as a bakery-cafe and then grew into an upscale restaurant. The croissants are huge and both the plain and almond kinds are a delicious incentive to work out harder. You cannot go wrong with any of the menu items but to eat the garlic mashed potatoes is to experience paradise on earth. Beef bourgnion and the snapper marseillaise are excellent.
From the get go, I could tell this was a fancier place, because they had cloth tablecloths and napkins. Not too fancy though, that you had to be in a nice suit. A nice collared shirt kind of place.
I had the halibut, which was absolutely delicious. The sauce wasn't overpowering and really let the taste of the halibut come through. The only downside was that the portions were a bit small. I forgot that the portions get smaller, the fancier the place gets, so lesson learned. Next time, I am going to order 2 entrees.
The service was friendly, albeit a tad bit slow and it would be a great place to take a date. The desserts were also absolutely delicious (and I'm not much of a dessert guy). I will be going back to this place and can't wait to try out more of the menu.
Very good food, nice environment, and mostly professional staff.
Every single thing i've eaten here has been very good. :) Tucked away in a shopping center, in a relatively unassuming little building, but once you get in a seated, it has a very nice view of the craggy cliffs and a pleasant atmosphere.
only complaint: instead of asking to see my (young looking) Fiancée's ID, they served her Wine and then sent a different waitress to ask "how old are you?" - kind of broke the mood of our engagement dinner when some waitress told my fiancée she looked 13. ....not very professional.
Still, nice place.
I have only been to Marigold's once, but I have nothing but good things to say about this place.
I went out in search of a good bakery for pre-made desserts. I was a bit intimidated when I walked in and saw the set-up; it was a bit fancier than I was expecting. However, I was immediately greeted by a friendly face who gave me plenty of time to browse the delectable array of desserts and humored me as I pointed to what I wanted since I didn't know the names of my selections. The dessert counter was fairly busy but she never made me feel rushed.
I was floored when I saw that they offered a chicken curry sandwich and asked if I could get that to-go, as well. Even though the grill had just shut down (something I hadn't realized when I had asked for the sandwich), the woman who helped me with my desserts asked the cook if he could make one more sandwich, and he obliged.
Not only was that great service, but my chicken curry sandwich was AWESOME. Very sizeable portion of chicken curry with cashews, raisins, apples (I think) and probably some other veggies, sandwiched in pita bread with lettuce, sprouts and tomato. I need to say it again: it was sooooo good. Plus, it came with a small side of pasta salad that was very light and delicious, and half a pickle that tasted different enough I'm inclined to believe they might pickle their own pickles.
Even though I was getting take-out, I left a 20% tip for the awesome service, and the woman helping me thanked me for it - which I would normally think would feel awkward but somehow didn't this time - and told me she would make sure the cook got some of it for being willing to make my sandwich even though the kitchen was closed.
Onto the desserts: I got a cup of Tiramisu (I know, who knew it came in a cup, right?) and again, it was amazing! I think it's hard to find good Tiramisu, but this was really delicious. Next, I got two slices of some strawberry-not-shortcake number. While not on the level of the tiramisu, it was still quite tasty. Last, but not least, I got two slices of some chocolatey chocolate booyah (more accurately described as: chocolate mousse, chocolate cake, chocolate mousse in a chocolate shell with chocolate shavings on top). At the risk of sounding like the wrapper on a Godiva bar, the words I have to describe this treat: rich and decadent. The cake was moist, the mousse was light and fluffy. Y-U-M.
In the end:
1 whole curry chicken sandwich
1 tiramisu
2 strawberry delicious somethings
2 chocolate-y booyah
$31.00
Not bad, not bad at all.
5 stars, two thumbs up, one full and totally satisfied belly.
stopped in for dessert, but my party was a touch intimidated by the evening atmosphere- pretty fancy
just stopped at the dessert counter instead and took it to go. everything was amazingly delish.
Fabulous bakery, excellent food, slow service. Go there for a leisurely meal, but not if you're in a hurry.
I can't add much to what's already been said - except that it is a great place for a moderately upscale business lunch. Great service.
Marigold's is a west side treasure. It's a hip upscale cafe with reasonable prices for lunch, an elegant candlelit setting for dinner. My favorite is the chicken and brie sandwich. They also have great baked goods and coffee, and an outdoor patio.
It doesn't look like much from it's strip mall location but this is a very solid restaurant with a nice variety of food for all tastes. Great place to take the parents. I have never been disappointed here. They are also known for their desserts.
