I am a British girl who loves me some tea :)
I am a huge fan of supporting the local cafe instead of always lining the pockets of starbucks - like they need the extra customer...
Anyway, this place is everthing a local independant tea and coffee place should be, theres a welcome that you thought only granny could give you upon entering the 'cozy' cute-sey pillow loaded sofas and chairs. A gift shop filled with 'french looking stuff' livens the other side of the coffee counter. If only they had a fat fluffy cat, I might never leave.
The lost star? to be honest, its the price....you're not starbucks, you are a local, small business - its like aunt betty asking for $4.50 for a cuppa tea! lol, well, if you want a whipped latte with vanilla sprinkles that is, a plain coffee is about the only thing that is cheap. I just wish everything else was too!! Then I would go more often.

    Where do I start...

You can drink coffee, order a rug, play the piano, shop for greeting cards and take a three minute tour... all at the same time!

When you first enter, you will be confused! I wasn't sure if I was in a coffee shop or a Flea Market. I kid you not; If Ikea and Coffee Bean had sex in South Central... Marie et Cie would be the product of reproduction.

I spent more time trying to figure this place out than actually getting work done. I did however, come up with a list of reasons why the interior designer deserved a karate chop to the forehead for brewing up this puzzling disaster!

On a positive note, the shop did offer free wifi and the couch was somewhat comfy, although the wifi randomly stopped working every 10-15mins. The business itself has been established for nearly a decade and they have been able to maintain an A-rating from inspectors. I did not try the coffee.

When I first discovered this place a few months ago I LOVED it! The coffee crumble cake was the best I think I'd ever had and I wanted to eat it every day for the rest of my life. FIVE STARS for sure!

Then I went back, and they didn't have it. Not even exaggerating, like 10 or 12 times over a couple months. Then they got this weird coffee cake that clearly wanted to be as good as the other one but wasn't.

Eventually I stopped trying to fulfill my coffee cake cravings, and decided it was probably a sign that I shouldn't eat a massive heap of butter and sugar every day for the rest of my life. But it was still disappointing.

Now I go every few weeks or so, resigned to the fact that I can't count on them having the most amazing coffee cake in the entire world. I've ventured out to other menu items--the spinach squares are pretty tasty, especially when they toast it, the the cookies they have are pretty darn good too. Also the food case it great for picking up a quick & portable meal on the way to class without spending a fortune. And I can always count on their delicious (DELICIOUS) soy chai latte to be bomb. Four stars now, and I'm not mad at it.

Other pluses: free wi-fi, good seating, a piano (haven't had the courage to play yet though), and a great shop attached for cool gifts. Parking's hit or miss, but possible. Lovely independent coffee shop which the valley desperately needs, but dang it I want that coffee cake!

When you drive into Marie et Cie's parking lot, it feels akin to driving into some private mansion whose glorious inner sanctum is hidden to the profane outside world. But rather than find a paradise hidden in this cornerfront, you'll find faux-Italian villa schmaltz and an inflated sense of worth.

The coffee is decent, I suppose, and the food offerings (and even gelato) are vegan friendly, so that's a draw, but the interior of this place is atrocious in a way that only mass produced kitsch art of 19th c. Paris and Rome can create. The atmosphere is perfectly embodied by the greeting card store attachment to the coffee shop, whose style feels like the disposable backgrounds that come in Bed Bath and Beyond picture frames, which is to say, you throw them away immediately due to their overwhelming cheese factor.

This is all a bit harsh, and more of a reflection on my own sense of style, because, in the end, it's an independent coffee shop doing a decent job, which I support in theory. But coffee shops like this succeed largely on the atmosphere and vibe they create. When it comes to ranking them on those parameters, well...I'll choose M Street every time.

And given my interactions with the manager, who is incredibly haughty and rude every time I go in, this place just isn't worth the effort.

I like this place alot -they have those hand wrapped -already made-vegetarian-wrap thingies and I like those and im not even vegan or vegetarian so they have a nice little section of that stuff, which is nice to see at a coffee shop. Theyre "kebbeh" its a lil mini fillo dough meets empanada style outer layer with some ground meat and theyre like a $1, really good! i like the gelato and gift shop

    * the only thing thats annoying are the lil signs posted everywhere. very grandma of them to do so ala 'dont park here too long "  thats posted on the tables, and their splenda isnt available  " u have to ask for splenda' and "dont throw liquid in the trash" hahahaha

I'm a longtime fan of independent coffee houses, especially as they become increasingly rare. I'll admit I frequent the big chain joints; they're sadly but conveniently ubiquitous and the Coffee Bean has some really decent beanage...but these little gems will always have my heart.

Nestled in a great little spot in Studio City on Riverside and Colfax, they have a small parking lot that gets a little cramped at times, but street parking is pretty easy if that's not an option.

There is ample outdoor seating, most of which is covered enough to make it an option even on rainy days.  Inside it's small and cozy, with loads of yummy baked goods, prepared sandwiches, pasta salads, etc. They offer a full range of coffee drinks and smoothies, and have a wall of cold bottled drinks, etc.

The other side of this adorable little cafe is a fabulous place to buy antiques, unique furnishings (pricey, but exquisite), cards, knick-knacks, books, candles, etc. I think it's a bit overpriced but I also sometimes find unique enough items to be worth paying a bit more for something really special for someone...or for myself.

I like the eclectic nature of the place, and the cafe side definitely has its own very warm, comfy feel. It's the sort of place that makes me want to play hooky and just hang there all day long every time I stop by for an iced almond milk latte. (I LOVE that they offer more dairy alternatives than just soy!) Now if they would add some vegan and/or gluten-free baked goods, they would really have me as a daily regular.

Ok, seriously, these are some of the most personality barren people ever. I love coffee, and theirs is pretty good. And Im happy to go in at 6 am when I, too, am surly and I dont care if they appreciate my business. But everytime I go in there, the staff is mildly alive, totally unengaging and slow as hell. Again, the coffee is good, but the food, I mean almost all of it, is pretty gross. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Im done.

Ill take Starbucks, where the coffee tastes like gasoline, but I can actually talk to the people behind the counter and they'll answer me like a human.

The gift store is cool, but again, void of any personality. Blech.

Everything here is healthy... that often detracts from the taste of the food, but I go for the chai, which is amazing. The place is cute, the staff is friendly and there are tons of options. There's a cute store to hunt through while you wait for your drink and there's sometimes someone playing the piano - which is always great.

I just like the atmosphere and I love supporting them. And honestly, I'm a bit crazed with finding "the best..." whatevers in LA, and this has, hands down, the best chai - I get it with organic milk and blended (I just wish they made their own whipped cream). I would give this 5 stars but for the meh food.

Ok Ok... I know it's getting cold but the Gelato here is AMAZING!!! And it also helps that the place is walking distance from my place.

This is a cute little indie type cafe, the kind that has vegan goods and yummy coffee (although I'm far from a vegan). They have nice little tasty pastries and a cool vibe. There's also a weird furniture store attached, but that just gives it a different vibe than your regular old Starbucks.

I really wanted to like this place because it seemed like the kind of spot a person could relax and have a good conversation or read a good book while enjoying some coffee. However, there were a few annoyances that detracted from the overall experience.

First of all, we arrived and there was some sort of event happening. Events are cool and it seemed like a musical thing, but for some reason the cafe chose to have it right in front of the only entrance. So we had to kind of push through a thick, statiionary crowd to get inside the place. I then ordered a bakery item and a double-shot of espresso. Apparently they have no espresso cups, which I would have rather they mentioned instead of giving me the espresso in a regular coffee cup (this causes it to cool off much, much faster). I've also been ordering double/triple espressos for years instead of getting regular coffee and I'm pretty sure they only pulled one shot for me. Of course, without it being in the proper cup, it was difficult to prove. They charged me $2.80 for it.

When I went to pay, there was some major issue with the card reader (their issue, not mine) that was kind of awkward and lasted for 2 minutes. It turned out I was dollar short in cash, so that wasn't an option (although honestly, instead of making a customer stand at the counter for 2 minutes trying to run their card incorrectly, I would probably just take the cash so they could be on their way). Apparently this card issue is frequent, so you might want to bring cash to avoid the hassle.

In the end, I'd probably try the place again. I'll probably bring cash, order a latte, and cross my fingers the event planner keeps the path to the doorway clear.

Definitely charming, but such a weird combination of goods - coffee, gifts, and furniture. Next thing you know, they'll offer dry cleaning, chinese food, and donuts in one stop shop.

I really wanted to like this place, but maybe it wasn't for me. It definitely was quiet and relaxing, with ample parking. Prices were decent and they have a cute patio. I got an americano and it wasn't very good. I would only come here again to support a local business, not for the quality of beverage.

So,I've been waiting to write a review because I really thought they hired a few new crappy baristas but turns out they've hired a TON of crappy baristas.

I live walking distance from this place. It's either here or starbucks, and,Im always for supporting neighboorhood businesses. But,I just can't do it anymore. At first they were very consistant with their coffee making; I don't even mind the rude behavior because I really liked the coffee and I hate chain coffee shops but at least starbucks puts on a happy face!

Today was the last straw. I ordered an iced vanilla latte w/soy. I said "iced",meaning cold coffee, yes, cold. When she handed me the cup,she made a hot latte. I told her I said I wanted an iced latte, she responds"oh,I didn't hear that part!". Ok,fine. I've worked at many coffee shops in my life,I know mistakes happen. So she comes back with my "iced" latte,it was warm;ice melted. I tell her,"do you feel this? This is warm! Not even a little cold". She rolls her eyes...yeah,that girl. What a great employee. Finally, she comes back with a 3rd drink, and this time it's obvious she just doesn't care. It was full of soy milk, finally colder than before but all the powder lay at the bottom of the cup.

I just walked out. I don't like to make scene,I just don't come back.

It's sad. I really liked this place and I'm a very loyal customer but I'd rather drive thru mc donalds for a better coffee with happier people with a smile.

Great find in the Valley.  We recently moved to Studio City from Santa Monica, and we were missing some of the great little coffee places on the Westside until we found Marie et Cie.  Not only do they have great coffee/teas/lattes, they also have amazing HEALTHY treats (organic ingredients, sugar alternatives like xylitol, vegan options, etc).  Everything on the menu is very tasty, and it's fun to check out the
adjacent decor items that are for sale.

Parking lot is pretty tight, but if you go during non-peak hours, it's not a problem.  Highly recommended!

    THE OWNER RIPPED ME OFF!

I bought a $25 coupon for food/drinks online for this coffeehouse, and when I went to spend it today, the owner told me that it had to be used all at once. All at once? On coffee and snacks - $25 worth??

It doesn't mention anything about that on the coupon anywhere. I got legitimately ripped off. And no, the coupon is NOT redeemable at the gift shop area, thank you mister owner guy.

I used to (today was my LAST day) come here with my friends twice a week. I met my wedding photographers here and used to recommend this place to everyone. Not anymore.

I am considering taking them to small claims. I'm so sick of people like this ... sometimes it's lame living in LA!

Oh, and btw, they charge you EXTRA if you bring your own cup. Thank you.

This charmer has become a morning ritual. Stopping here for coffee each day makes my heinous canyon trek much more bearable. The organic French roast is perfect. They allow frequent coffee customers to bring in their own mugs or travel cups. I'm delighted that I can cut down on waste and save about a dollar each day.

The garden patio is darling, and I hope to one day stay and enjoy when I have more time. Marie et Cie doubles as a gift/furniture boutique, which opens a little later in the day. They have a variety of delicious-looking vegan baked goods, gelato and prepackaged wraps and salads.

I'd be even more enamored if they offered a discount or punch card to reward frequent customers. The food prices are a tad high, but I'm happy to support.

Came here with a friend to relax and have a cappuccino.  Had a good time.

Cappuccino was decent (but served in a to-go cup which killed the mood...), barista was nice, and if I were rating on atmosphere alone I would give 4 stars for the adorable running fountains, shaded seating, etc.  Friend and I were able to spend over an hour having a long conversation without shouting or feeling rushed.

No real food menu but they serve bagels and paninis.  I had an eggplant/red bell pepper/pesto/harvati panini which was good but not great.  Veggies were overcooked.

Amazing assortment of pastries with regular sugar alternatives like agave syrup, etc.

And gelato, which I didn't try.

I would come back here if I happened to be in the area again with no real agenda and just jonesing for some chill time.

Who are these people experiencing this wonderful customer service? Must be biased regulars...I used to come in pretty regularly and the service was very hit or miss. The baristas either loved you or pretty much ignored you completely. The coffee is usually burned or cold. Not to mention its decline in flavor.

Also, the owner and i'm assuming his mother, or the other way around, are extremely cold and off-putting. That is unless you're one of the many trophy wives coming in from the pilates studio next door. Then you get plenty of leers from behind the counter. Also, the wifi is NOT free.

All in all, this place seemed like it would be a haven for a writer, but it's just another frou frou, hollywood douch-a-torium.

However, the coffee just isn't that good, the prices just aren't that low, and the baristas are sometimes a pain in the arse.

Don't go unless you want a change of pace and to try something local.

I hope they change their attitude because the space is too nice to waste.

wanted to try this place out after I searched for coffee near my place that was dog friendly.  I've gone a few times and it's all about the ambience.  Obviously by the name, it's french inspired and after just returning from Paris, I needed a reminder of my trip.  Typical prices for coffee and pastries like any other cafe.  But I try to go more local than big chain business.

I have to agree with most of the reviews here. I want to like this place. I don't want to go to Starbucks...however you often stand in line a very long time for mediocre coffee. They just need to be faster and better to compete with Starbucks. They have free WIFI but it is often out or slow. The atmosphere is nice and I like the outdoor seating. The attached gift shop is very odd. This should be a complimentary business like Portrait of a Bookstore is to Aroma Cafe nearby. This shop seems more geared to interior design for people whose tastes run towards the tacky. Improve please! I want to love and recommend you guys! I would suggest that you always have two people behind the counter so that people can get their simple orders in while the other employee is struggling with that iced-triple-mocha-ridicula-cino.

Eclectic, with lots of nooks and quiet spots to sip coffee quietly.
Lots of nicknacks, rather overpriced and in my opinion"ridiculous" but what can I say....there's a market for that.
My friend and I visited one afternoon out of curiosity and sampled the expresso and a vanilla latte.  I found the expresso rather ordinary and the latte altogether too sweet (it seemed as if they used some sort of sweetened powder additive).
I would go back, but I would opt for a tea next time.

I love this place. The most unique gifts, cards, books, antiques, assorted furniture, and knick knacks. I have recommended this place to many, after my good friend Sean told me about it. Give yourself time, don't miss any table, display or room. This place is a real gem. Interesting gifts for friends, family, or yourself!
I have gotten their food, very healthy, nothing too special beyond that...the gifts are why I come!

    Update:
Great gifts, but stay away from the jewelry. I bought 2 pair of earrings, that keep flinging out of my ears, and gems coming off. I brought them back, and hoped for store credit, but they insisted on fixing them, and not refunding my money.....which I was going to spend on more gifts. So I will look elsewhere for gifts. If a store will not stand behind the products they sell, I can't honeslty keep buying from them.

This is my new favorite spot to get work done while enjoying a good cup of coffee.  My dog, Maya, loves it too.  I'm going to keep this review short.  Here are the top ten highlights:

    1. Great coffee - I love strong coffee.  This is strong without being burnt or bitter.  Two thumbs up.

    2. Great service - Everyone here is happy and helpful.

    3. Good music - Not too loud, chill, and great for getting work done.

    4. Plenty of space to sit - This is key.  Lots of outdoor space to relax with comfy chairs inside, and a covered patio for shade.

    5. Dog-friendly

    6. Reasonable prices with tons of organic and healthy options for breakfast and lunch...and it tastes good!  They have several organic coffee options as well, though as d. bene t. said, this probably isn't the place to go for fair-trade varieties.

    7. A gem of a gift shop attached to the coffee store that provides a nice opportunity to take a break from work and browse.

    8. Quiet - Everyone here seems to have an understanding that this is a quiet work environment.  People are considerate of others.

    9. Free Wi-Fi.

    10. Parking - There is a small lot for patrons, and if it is full, street parking on Colfax is always available, and it's free.

Have to agree with Samantha. I like supporting local businesses, but they can't get the orders right - was served regular instead of decaf so spent the night staring at the ceiling. Can't even call them baristas - my friend wanted a decaf iced coffee and that was beyond them. She settled for a hot Americano because we were short on time. Hope they improve fast or they'll be gone.

I really wish I could give this place a great review but to me there is absolutely nothing special about it.  Except for the fact they sell furniture, gifts, AND coffee.  Quite the interesting collaboration of items.  I love coffee yet I'll admit, I typically go to Starbucks due to the quickness of it.  Yet after realizing this place was just at the opposite end of the street I figured maybe I can actually support an independent place.  But unfortunately they didn't win me over and I have absolutely no reason to return.  I might as well go to starbucks, considering their baristas actually smile at me (even if it's fake, it's appreciated).  Both times I went to this place, no one was very nice and they were extremely slow.  Until I find a great independent coffee house, I'll be getting my coffee fast food style.

Awesome coffee shop in the valley!  They have a great selection of food as well (both healthy foods and tasty looking pastries).  The service is usually nice, but they do not always open on time in the AM.  The atmosphere is another great thing about this place, it is a french style coffee shop with a comfy arrangement of couches and some quirky decorations.  Definitely a place worth checking out.

This is the coffee shop I've always dreamed of but had come to believe I'd never find outside of Europe or New York.

As far as places to sit and enjoy the atmosphere you have enough options to fit any mood or weather condition. Inside & outside there's tables for laptops and writing, as well as comfier furniture for the times you just want to relax and read. If you like sunshine there's a section out front with a warm glow surrounded by plant-life or if you want to escape the sun there's a half-covered area on the side of the building where you can still enjoy the breeze and the vines climbing around you yet escape the elements.

I can't speak for everyone, but the style fits me perfectly. The dark tones are soothing while the little chandeliers give off an enchanting glow. Pictures of Paris and black and white prints of classic Hollywood actors hang on the walls- an elegant mix between dreaming of a romantic place overseas and the reality of living amidst the land of movie magic.

The staff is friendly and the coffee is excellent . (The foam on my latte was like a pillow to my lips. Ha!) I adored the baked desserts I tried and can't wait to taste their gelato. And with my new resolve to eat healthier their wide variety of healthy options helps me stick to that goal.

And finally, two more things that just made me smile. Being blissfully interrupted from my reading the other day by live piano music wafting from inside....and tonight when I walked in & there was a flat-screen on the piano with the finals game playing. Really...for me it doesn't get any better than that.

Free wifi, good coffee and tea, and tons of organic things to eat.

Also, lots of seating!  There is a small outdoor area, an indoor area, and an additional patio.

They were playing lots of music I dig, which is always a plus.

There is a small parking lot attached, as well as street parking down Colfax.  Here's a request to my fellow patrons...  Stop taking a spot and a half when you park.  Other people would also like to park.  There were three "sort of" spots left that a mini couldn't even fit into.  All could have been avoided if people parked with courtesy!  (no weight on my rating.)

I oughta punch myself in the face for the thousands of times I've just driven on by without stopping in this wonderful little local coffee/gift shop. Thank God I came to my senses this morning and stopped to check out this little treasure.

I've always noticed their witty "sticking it to the corporate coffee house" signs to lure you in and I should have seen what I was missing out on eons ago.

It is the cutest little neighborhood coffee shop tucked in a secret garden type setting, full of freshly prepared foods and pastries. I ordered a caramel mocha latte and oatmeal orange/cranberry scone (they heat it up for you upon request!). While I was waiting I browsed their one of a kind gifts. I didn't check out their home goods portion of the store, though.

They sell these awesomely hilarious line of greeting cards called "hard cards" (http://www.hardcardsru...). Not only are they clever, they are also eco-friendly and they donate a portion of their proceeds to various charities. I guffawed like a fat kid while reading them.

The coffee and scone were delish. The gal at the counter was sweet and smiley, and she even complimented my figure, which was a nice way to start the morning after pilates class! I feel privileged to support local businesses like this where service and special finds are abundant in supply.

Marie et cie, you had me at hello!

I've been a long time fan of this place. However today the owner was astonishingly rude! To the extent that I can no longer recommend this place. Don't expect to receive any form of consumer service here!

The only reason I'm not giving this place 5 stars is that I have to be blown away to give 5 stars to anything.  With that said, I really enjoyed my time at Marie et Cie for breakfast.  What a cute place and a nice gem in the Valley.  As my boyfriend said, this is the kind of place you expect to find in Hollywood or West Hollywood, but it's here in a cute little pocket of Valley Village.  They have lots of healthy eats for breakfast/brunch/lunch like bagels, sandwiches, pastas, vegetarian dishes, dips, spreads, salads, coffees, teas, specialty teas, etc.

Unfortunately, when we were there the gift shop was closed, but as we noticed, the table and chairs we were sitting at had price tags on them.   They were cute, shabby chic type.  A lot of the furniture I did see reminded me of what you might see at a place like Restoration Hardware, just a tad less pricey.

We definitely plan on going back!    The staff was really polite and friendly too!

If I'm in need of a last minute hostess gift, this is the place! They have a good selection of unique gifts and cards. I also love their gelato and pastries. The pear tart and butter pecan bars are simply delicious...can't find these anywhere else.

If I didn't live a block away from this little place I would probably not be a frequent visitor. As it is, its too close to say no to sometimes. Product is consistently overpriced. This morning I paid $10 for an iced coffee and a bagel with lox and cream cheese. It wouldn't be so bad except that on top of the price, the service is also consistently lackluster. Nothing more than the bare minimum of words required grunted in your direction by the guy behind the counter who typically doesn't even look at you. But it is quiet, they do play good music and the salads, ready to eat sandwiches and pastries are pretty tasty.

This is yet another place that has one of THE lamest cable commercials around, unless of course you like a condescending woman making her "dummy" husband look like even more of a clueless idiot because he doesn't know exactly how great Marie et Cie is. But I digress...

This store is really great and you don't need a commercial to tell you that. It's loaded with cute little Frenchy and European imports, knick knacks and awesome gifts for people that already have a picture frame or a coffee mug and who would appreciate a gift that took a little more effort on your part. Most of the inventory is made up of one of the kind antiquey pieces, along with books, soaps, candles and other goodies.

They also have a coffee/tea house which serves up some delightful drinks and nibblies. I love this place not only for its stuff, but there are few places that will make you feel like you are shopping in a neat little shop in Europe and even though this is in the heart of Valley Village it still takes you away from your day for at least a few tranquil moments.
