I love this place. I have been shopping there since they first opened. Used to frequent it like twice a week., and to be honest, that's the best way to shop a consignment selection...you are much more likely to have regular "scores"! They have a nice selection of modern and classics if it is in exceptional condition and a bit of vintage. Not a lot of trendy, which it good for my style. Its the kind of place where you find something about 50 percent of time...which is good for a consignment store. Sometimes I wish they had more shoes....they have room for more, but I think they probably lack a huge selection because they are so picky about the condition...so I totally understand. Love the layout! Easy to shop, easy to get in and out fast. Nice fitting rooms. Good lighting and mirrors. Nice displays always...Definitely like shopping at a new store...but everything is just cheaper! Constructive Criticism: maybe be a bit friendlier; let a person see what's "on the rack", be nice when you have to let someone down because they can't have the window item that same day to try on. I know it doesn't feel good to have to let someone down (i also work in the customer service), but I try to be very considerate of the person's feelings when I have to...
Anyway, love it, go again and again and again. Hope it never goes away.
Today was the second time I went to this shop. The first time I was with my best friend, who is a second-hand and denim afficionado (I'm working on developing both of these traits). Today I was by myself and looking for a pair of shorts.
Well, I wouldn't say that Maribel is the best place to find a pair of shorts - there were just two in my size. Total. But that was more than made up for by the greatest find I've had at a less-than-new store in a long time: a barely worn pair of Salt Works jeans.
I like the way the space is laid out because it makes it seem high-end (which it is). You can really see everything from the front door and plan out your attack of the merchandise.
I guess my two complaints are these: 1) No one helped me, so I was hesitant about barging into the changing room, and I didn't really get any help in determining fit . 2) The selection of tops for bustier women (34DD here) was slim pickins.
Oh, and they didn't have any shoes in size 5.5! But then again, how many people have ridiculously tiny feet like me?
Maribel, I'll be back...you can count on it.
Yes, the customer service can be luke warm and certain items are overpriced, but there are awesome deals to be had on the sales rack. I also love their dress selection. I've a got two kids under three, so I don't have a lot of money, or a lot of time.
A few months ago I had a wedding to attend. Yes, I'd known about it for months, but hadn't gotten around to dress shopping until four days beforehand. I had a brief reprieve during nap time and crept to Maribel's which is about 5 minutes away from my house. It took me 2 minutes to find the dress. There it was- a canary yellow Trina Turk halter. Perfect!! But in all fairness, I did later see the same dress at Crossroads for a third less.
Maribel has been my go-to place for adding to my collection of good sweaters. In the process, I am now the proud owner of a great Trina Turk dress. Between the Trina Turk dress and the Eileen Fisher sweater, for example, I have 2 items that I would never have bought at retail prices. Maribel allows me to buy and own the better labels without blowing my monthly clothing addiction budget. I think Anne and Sophia are very helpful without breathing down your neck. I much prefer to not be stalked while shopping. When I need their opinion, though, there is no hesitation on their part to let me know if something looks right. Whenever my husband needs to get me a gift, I ask for a gift certificate to Maribel. There's always going to be something special there that I want.

I use to work down the street from this place and would go in when I was on a break in hopes of finding something good. The clothing selection is in my opinion boring.I will say that the clothing is in very good condition and they do have a pretty good selection of designer jeans. i have also tried to sell once-wasn't a good experience. The girl took my items and about 3-4 days later I get a call saying that I need to come and get them because the owner didn't agree with her picking judgement and they would not be consigning them for me. That's fine but it is very unprofessional to do that after the fact. I felt the owner should have tried to sell them and if they didn't then oh well, it would have been a better judgement call on her part.
And besides that experience with consigning, I have always felt the customer service was not good. There was one girl who was always nice, but the other (who I think is the owner) has never been very nice or welcoming-like she doesn't say hello when you walk into her store, that kind of thing. I very rarely write bad reviews for businesses but unfortunately this place was a real turn off and I will never shop there again.
I'm really sorry about my earlier post. I did honestly think that it had closed, as I have been there like 20 times, but not for a few months, and when I drove by the other day I swear I looked right at the place where it was and it was closed. Thank god it's not, as it's the best 2nd hand clothing store in the east bay.

As a buyer I have never been too successful there. The items are not really my style and are very safe and conservative. I do like the denim selection and they always have cute purses too :)
As a seller, Maribel is hit or miss. They definitely do not have trendy items and so they do not buy them either. They always buy my good denim and I receive a good payment for it ! They also take my "business" wear like Banana Republic.
They let you look though the selection in peace which is great when you are browsing.
They keep their records very organized and have a great consignment system.
I've found it to be a little hit or miss, but when you hit at Maribel, you hit it out of the park.
I found a blue suede tuxedo-style jacket lined in tight-weave linen there and asked the girl behind the counter about it. Apparently one of their consigners is a photo shoot stylist and had received the jacket as a gift. If you treat your clothes like friends (as I do), you can't help but appreciate it when the people who sell them to you can tell you their stories.
(P.S. I was too unemployed to buy this jacket for myself and was heartbroken about it until the man in my life gave it to me for Christmas. He's bona fide.)
Maribel is a sweet little consignment shop. I go there to buy sweaters for the winter and long sleeved shirts. I also got an outrageous pair of pants there once. Mostly their clothes are very girly, too girly for me, but I'm sure there's lots of women out there who'll like them. And the other reviewer is right that they mostly stock stuff for smaller women.
This is such a terrific shop and such a welcome contrast to the huge, glossy wind-bag that is the Gap right down the block!! I have found some true treasures in this shop such as Capital shorts, Burning Torch skirts, a Mint blouse, and a few other pieces which would have cost an unbelievable arm n' leg anywhere else.
I wandered in today thinking I would try to find a Spring-y sweater...I didn't, but found something much more desirable!! I bought a one-of-a-kind pair of earrings from a local designer who uses found objects and recycled gems...I will be wearing these for a long time! I have found the jewelry selection to be consistently interesting here. There is always something to tempt me, and always something I long for...
I would gladly give 5 stars rather than 4, tho' often times I am disappointed that the ultra cool items are in ultra tiny sizes. I wear a 4 or 6, which is not big. On more than one occasion my eyes have misted over upon spying Marc Jacobs dresses or (today, in fact) a cream colored trench coat...alas! these are always in size 0 (WTF?!...who actually wears this non size??) or size 2...It's probably for the best...I am supposed to be pinching my pennies with the recession and all...still, it is unlikely that I would ever be a size 2 (or desire to be) and thus, I continue my shopping...This is by far the best consignment store around and often has terrific mixes of current as well as classic clothing. Worth a visit!
Terrible customer service. These women should not be in sales. And the clothes are overpriced.
I'm getting excited just thinking about Maribel's.
So, I just moved here and its totally down the street from where I live. My paycheck is scared.
Somethings are kind of expensive. But the quality is great for all the pieces. And if you're not looking for anything in particular, you usually can find something for a decent price.
I don't know how the consignment selling part works for here yet though. Some places like things dry cleaned beforehand, etc.
The sales lwoman was great. Stayed out of my way but was friendly when I brought something up to purchase.
Maribel: consignment incognito. Nowhere on the storefront glass does a big obnoxious "green boutique" or "recycled fashion" script taint the view. Nowhere inside does a ripped garment or cheap mass produced item get away with existing. This place is subtle, clean, and spaced out. A boutique experience all the way!
Downside: some of those clothes are boutique prices (Maribel also has original never-been-owned pieces that'll knock my socks off until I see the price tag). In general, more expensive than your competing consignment shop. But as others have stated, very high quality clothing that wears new and will probably last (I don't know about all those paper thin cashmere blend sweaters, though).
When I grew up around here, the Lakeshore consignment joint was Buffalo Exchange. Now I'm all growed up, Lakeshore is all growed up - Bam, I think we have a new relationship here.
This place is awesome! Fantastic brand names at inexpensive prices. It's different from other used clothing stores because it's very selective in what garmets they buy. It feels like a small boutique, but the great part is it is affordable for almost every budget.
I've scored Da Nang pants for $34, a Diesel skirt for $24, and Irregular Choice shoes for $11. Those prices are from the sale section, but the clothing on the "regular priced" racks are extremely reasonable. I've seen 7 for All Mankind jeans for $70, Donna Karan dresses for $100, and Paper Denim and Co. jeans for $40.
The best is the times when you find that perfect piece. Now I freely admit that doesn't always happen, but I am not always that diligent. I'm more of the in and out in 4.2 minutes and if the next best thing didn't jump of the rack and onto mine, I'm done for the day.
Things I love about Maribel:
1. The window display is always compelling.
2. The non-consignment lines they carry are super cool, especially the bags and jewels.
3. They are really picky with what they consign, so the stuff is in great condition and really cute, except for that occasional "what?" but you know, you don't have to buy it!
4. The space is clean and light, the music doesn't give me a headache, and its easy to navigate.
5. Ann and Sophia are nice and not at all pushy.
I recommend adding Maribel to your shopping route. All of the things I have bought there fall into the "wear it a lot and love it" category, whereas all the stuff I ever bought at Buffalo exchange fell into that "is this smell gonna come out, wait a minute, this looked cute in the store, guess I'll donate it to goodwill...why did I bother" category.
Customer Service:
I find it odd that so many peoples big complaint about this store is customer service especially from people who "claim" to be long time customers. I happen to be a long time customer, and Anne and Sophia both know me by name, hell they even knew my ex boyfriend. I have tried on items there and the have asked me to walk out to see how things look and never have let me walk out with anything that was ill fitting. If something is cute they say it and if something is not well they are honest too! And calling someone a "sales girl" in yelp kind of speaks to the type of attitude you have when you are out shopping leading me to believe that it's not them but you with the attitude.

Maribel has some cute things, but you might want to take a bath - and an antibiotic - after trying anything on.
When it first opened years ago, they were a welcome sight to the neighborhood and I enthusiastically burst through their doors, ready to spend whatever I could afford. I excitedly collected an array of clothing to try on, most of it pants. So I get behind that curtain that's threatening to flap open and show off my goods, but I don't care, because I'm about to expand my wardrobe! And then it happens. Just as I begin to slip my foot into the leg of the first pair of pants, I notice an unfriendly sight. Sorry to be graphic, but here it is: A very crusty crotch.
I fling the pants away in disgust, but I gather myself together, and try to revive my shopping lust by turning to another pair of pants. This time I look before I step, and guess what? Yup. And then, a third time too.
I give up of course, and bring the three pairs to the counter person. I very discreetly let her know of my discovery, and she hastily grabs the pants and sends me on my way. No look of horror. No shame. And no apology either.
Thankfully I moved shortly after this and tried to erase the experience from my brain. But now, years later, I'm back in the hood and needing some convenient shopping. I figure, it's been years, my friends like this place, I'm a strong person, a survivor, I'm going back in.
So I start small and easy. I'm in there and see this adorable denim Gap jacket that someone has painstakingly embroidered. Birds, butterflies, flowers...renewal and optimism. This is a sign. Things have turned around. I am buying this jacket!
And as I'm walking home, feeling quite pleased, there's a chill in the air, so I decide to wear my cute new coat of hope. And then it happens: A crumpled up tissue in the pocket!
Maribel, whoever you are, on behalf of consignment shoppers everywhere, I am *begging* you: If you can't be troubled to ensure clothes are *actually* clean, at least make the tiniest effort to let us *believe* they are clean.
If you have a taste for bitchiness and would like a negative customer service experience, come shop here.
I loved shopping at this boutique around Lake Merritt . NOTE, PAST TENSE!
I had a completely negative experience during my last visit with the sales girl. I was ready to purchase 6 items, and asked her about a beautiful colorful coat on the rack behind the counter. I asked if it was on hold, and if I may see it. The woman annoyed at my request, snapped that it was just sold to the store, not yet priced and on the floor. I asked if I may still see it. She rolled her eyes at me, and lifted her finger to move the coat slightly over to be - so kind - to allow me to see it.
This encounter soured my perspective on this spot. I had shopped there for over two years. I appreciated their merchandise selection from the clothing, bags, and jewelry, and location - few blocks away from home.
The rude service ruined a relationship. My advice to the sales girl, every action has a consequence, rolling your eyes and treating people like shit could get a brick thrown at you. If you do not believe in customer service, do not work in the service industry.
I'm a rather conservative dresser, but I have a weakness for beautiful, unique clothes, like the steel, silk and cotton sheath I bought for no other reason than to drool over it. Of course, eventually, a girl's gotta eat, and that's when I gather up all these little finds and head to Maribel.
These girls not only love fashion, but they appreciate construction and materials. Sure, they have a critical eye---that's what keeps the racks fresh and interesting and unlike any consignment shop in the area. (In fact, you'll be so taken by the selection and charm of this lovely shop, you'll think you're shopping retail.)
I've only had the pleasure of interacting with Sophia, in the store and by phone, and she's always been nothing but lovely and helpful.
Maribel is a beautiful retail store that houses great designer goods for decent prices. I especially love the jewelry and SHOES!!!!!!!!
I dig Maribel. And I really dig supporting local businesses and reused clothing. But there have been some weird occurrences. Like for many of my Maribel shopping trips, inexplicably, I come away uncertain that I really wanted to commit to my purchases. It's as though I'm bewitched.
And I think I know why. The staff is sweet, friendly, and knowledgeable. The environment is small, inviting, and well organized. All this just really makes you want to buy something.
Indeed I've encountered some great finds here -- jackets (one awesome Levi's denim jacket with a high-ish waist, fury collar, and a Japanese style screen print with embroidered butterflies on the back), bags/purses, and a sweet bright green terry cloth dress.
But then again, I can also get caught up in the rapture of the moment, and purchase things that aren't quite my style or don't quite fit. And the prices just aren't cheap enough to validate such slips of spending.
But I'll go back again and again and again with the hopes of making another awesome find.
Maribel is a really cute little clothig boutique. I have brought some clothing here before for them to sell and am always pleased to get some money back for the items that are able to sell in the store. They are really picky on name brands and quality of the clothing that they will take--so i know the clothing that they have is in decent condition. I have been able to find some really nice items here in the past as well. '
They also have beautiful jewelry made by local designers. The earrings and necklaces are all hand made and original and also quite expensive. I like that this is not an overwhelming place to shop-- it is a smallish store and there are not piles of stock laying around (like in some consignment shops).
I am giving this place a one-star not as a buyer, but a seller. I gave them one of my purses to sell and they completely "lost" my item after 3 months. I didn't get my purse or any money back. Only bring things here you would give away. Better yet, just freecycle and save yourself some time and anguish from dealing with their carelessness and attitude.
Who knew that Oaktown girls spent so much on fashion denim, only to consign last-season pairs as soon as the current season's are available? This makes for great prices on the perfectly worn cast offs.
Clean stuff before wearing. Great store. My dogs like it too.
A great little consignment shop. You never know what you will find, which is why I always have to stop in if I am wandering around the neighborhood.
A perfect Saturday is picking up veggies at the farmers market, getting a scone at Arizmendi, and browsing in Maribel. It's a pretty darn wonderful aesthetic experience!
I actually had a great experience with a salesperson here so I thought I'd just throw it in. It's about time for a positive review of something from me. First of all, I found what's maybe the Holy Grail of Jeanaholics - A pair of Earnest Sewns for under $100. I usually come out of here emptyhanded but it's so easy to stop in after going to breakfast or to get coffee or to the farmer's market. So I found these jeans which made the other times almost worthwhile. But they were really long, and I love wearing flats, so I needed a hem. Guess what...how convenient...Cris who works here also hems jeans. She did a perfect job, the kind that involves some fancy origami so that the original hem remains and you don't look like someone who hemmed their own jeans. Her fee was really reasonable too and the jeans were ready in a few days.
I feel a little bit guilty about taking such pleasure in my ESes but Maribel helped me feel OK about it. That and when I wear them I look like a superhero.
Le sigh. I like a lot of the stuff in here....some of it is in my closet. But my issue is with their consignment. They only look at items between 10 and 2. That bites. Also, I had a pair of new without tags designer jeans that i got from ebay. They were too short for me so I decided to take them to a consignment shop. The woman who was looking at pants turned them away because they were too worn. Ummmmm, it's distressed denim. THAT'S HOW IT IS SUPPOSED TO LOOK
Always great designer clothes for cheap. Great bags and shoes. But prepare to give a naked show to other customers in these dressing rooms. (i.e.....don't wear the ratty underwear.) OK....I've had to take away a couple of stars. Turns out they don't take checks, they won't hold anything past 6 that same day, and they only do consignment Monday-Saturday, from 10-2. BUT then sometimes you go on those days and they're closed for lunch from 12-1 and you stand outside steaming. I've never really seen it packed in this place, so I'm not sure why they can't buy every day, especially if you spend half of every paycheck on their clothes. But I guess their snobbiness makes for great clothes in season and in great condition. I love this place. Really, I do. Except the days when I hate it.
**Update! I partially edited this review...I've grown to like this store and the women who work there/ own it a lot more. I think the employees deserve a break....they've been pretty friendly with me. Also, they started taking the extra clothes they won't buy for donation. Yay! I don't have to haul my bags full of clothes I don't want back home with me! BUT Maribel, please! Please! Extend your buying hours. Or or or...you could have some sort of drop-off system for regular sellers so that you can just go through everything on your own time and then let me know the total? Email/ call, I don't care. It would beef up the inventory and make our lives easier. Lunch breaks are short...this selling window is just im. possible!! I alwats end up hanging on to my stuff til it's out of season cause I just can't find the time. My roommate says the same thing.
A pardise for size ten shoes! Not always an easy order to fill, but I've been pretty thrilled on a consistent basis with what I've found. And I feel like the salespeople are honest and pretty funny. Honesty is the only way to go when buying clothes, so I appreciate it. With short, stubby legs, it's important to buy the right styles - and they always point me in the right direction.
Really cute bags as well. Although it's not in my range, they recently had a pretty fabulous chloe bag! But they have other more reasonable designer bags.
I'm a regular.
I would give Maribel five stars based on the other things reviewers have noted: interesting, frequently-rotated stock, good finds (especially in the shoes) interspersed with expensive but really nice new things, and great jewelry. There are always one or two things I like, frequently more.
The problem is the service. I'm not high maintenance. I prefer to be left alone, basically, unless I have a question or something. But the people working here literally exude hostility: the times I've shopped here, I left feeling as though I'd somehow imposed on the owner by spending my money there. I've only done consignment there once -- and it was fine -- but I've seen the clerks' disdain when looking over other things that people are hoping to sell, and it's just wrong.
One of the many reasons I love Oakland is that it's unpretentious, but I'd say Maribel is a big exception...and they only get away with it because what they sell is really nice.
You can find some serious jewels here. I'm in on consignment wear and when I'm interested in finding some sevens for cheap or a new trina turk that some fashion designer handed down to maribel, I'm all the way in. The customer service isn't remarkable but who cares, I'll just shop, pay the price and leave.
But then some days it feels like the an overpriced goodwill thrift store. Those are probably the days that Lucky magazine didn't come by, but I did. It's okay, a week later they make up for it.
Used clothes shopping stopped being fun for me years ago, what with the overstuffed racks of almost cute clothes that never quite fit. HOWEVER, I make an exception for Maribel. Perhaps it's because of the darling storefront that I walk past at least once a day, or the appealing manner in which the merchandise is laid out, but I find that I am consistently drawn to Maribel, and have found some excellent items of clothing for very reasonable prices.
The merchandise is diverse but not overwhelming, with a good mix of basics and designer options. Lately I have noticed more new clothes on the racks, including LA Made shirts, which are incredibly flattering. I have had very good luck in the shoe department, and the jewelry (new, mostly small local designers) is quirky yet stylish.
I should also mention that I have been very happy with Maribel's consignment policy. I purge my closet regularly, and Maribel has taken a lot of my clothes and sold them at very fair prices. It is always a pleasure to walk in, check my account, and realize that I can fund another purchase. Clothes recycling at its finest.
I wear a size 16 or 18. If you are a larger woman, don't bother with this place. It's for small woman and girls. I looked through what they had, and was not impressed. Everything looked a little shabby. Nothing very stylish or trendy. I am surprised they can stay in business with the small amount of stock they have and the high rent they must be paying.
I think Maribel is the best consignment store in Oakland. Ann and Sophia are very discriminating when it comes to buying. They only sell classic or current style, pristine clothing and shoes. What I like about this boutique is the clean, minimal feel of the store. You can also find new items such as, Viv and Ingrid jewelry, handbags and more.
Definitely worth a look!
Maribel's is a nice little boutique with some cute finds. Prices are reasonable and they have good seasonal selections of clothes. Plus, no gross used-clothes smell, like at Buffalo Exchange(ugh)!
I have re-sold clothes here and it's been a good experience. They make it really easy to check on your account because they seem very well-organized and knowledgeable about what they have in stock. Also, they were very nice when an item I brought in went missing. You can either pick-up your stuff if it doesn't sell, or they will donate for you.
They are picky about what they accept for consignment and will only take stuff in great condition, with current styles and name-brand or designer label. So don't bring in your ratty sweaters and mom-jeans!!! More than once I have been surprised that they didn't take some brand new items I brought in. It's kind of embarrassing, like "is my taste that bad??" Oh well. They gave me a good amount for some Custo shirts I never wore, so I'm happy.
I find Maribel to be a unique experience to the eye and one's sense of style. Throughout the entire store, the attention to detail is beautifully displayed and the color scheme is inviting.
Additionally, the location is terrific. You can have your cake and eat it too as there are plenty of other shops to peruse. This is truly a great adventure to partake in, and you might find yourself as lucky as me and walk away with a piece of fashion you won't find anywhere else.
Take a chance on this little treasure. Some things are best to do over and over again. This is one of those for sure.
Pros:
* This place doesn't smell. I recently walked into another consignment shop and had to run out because it was cramped and had that musky I-just-ironed-all-my-dirty-clothes-to-make-them-se em-presentable smell.
* Good presentation (things aren't way crammed together).
* Decent selection (they seem picky about what they take), though most of the inventory leans towards the basic.
Cons:
* Prices seem high for what the clothes are. This could be viewed as a plus though if you're selling.
* Speaking of selling, they sometimes will take an item only to decide later not to put it out on the rack. So months later you come back to pick up your check and unsold items and there it is. If you're going to take it, just take it. Don't change your mind about it.
* The owner has an air of snottiness about her.
I found a brand new $30 Dolce & Gabanna skirt that fit me perfectly.
Need I say more?
I first went to Maribel several years ago and had a good experience, and found the staff to be friendly and helpful.
The last several times I have gone in there, however, I left feeling frustrated due to the poor service. The women at the counter, who I think is also the owner, would not acknowledge my entering the store -- there wasn't even so much as eye contact made. I could understand this if the store was crowded, but on all occasions the store was empty, or had only one other shopper in it.
I don't need to be doted on, but I would like to have someone be kind enough to return a "hello" when I enter their shop.
Maribel is pretty much a coveted little shopping secret to my friends. When they gasp is awe of some of my fabulous designer clothes, I smile. When I get the "you pay too much for clothes" or "how can you afford this?", I smile even more. I've scored so many treats in this store (several Marc Jacobs coats for $65- one still had tags on it, Nanette Lepore!, diesel jeans! costume national shoes!) that it would be silly to score it less than five stars. The best part? If you're sick of some of those frocks hanging in your closet, then you can trade them in for new ones here! It's not an immediate process like Buffalo Exchange, but time is well worth the wait for those pricey designer clothes. It's almost like getting these things for free.
I do have to disagree with the other reviews about the customer service. I have found that each time I've entered the store I've always been greeted. If you're looking for the breathing-down-your-neck-until-you-buy-something customer service, then go somewhere else. Like a used car sales lot. I like the fact that my existence is acknowledged, yet invited to explore the store at my own whim. In a place like this that has so many different things to offer, it's nice to not be hovered over. And when you do have a question, the staff has always been friendly and receptive! (ask them about those amazing round earrings in the jewelery case!)
There you have it... my secret is out. Please save a Marc Jacobs coat for me!
