I've been going to Mariam's for years and was always beyond pleased with my experience. I stopped going a year or so back when they went under new ownership. But that's just me being sad that the staff (all part of the same family) I'd grown so well acquainted with was leaving.
I recently decided to come back to see if the new owner kept Mariam's up to the high standard I had held it to and I must say, he delivered. While I didn't catch the owner's name, I did interact with him quite a bit. He was attentive and polite. Top notch customer service, honestly. The food was of the same high quality I remembered. I'm very picky about where I go for Filipino food being the mestiza that I am and growing up with my Filipino mother's cooking. Everything here holds up to Mama's standards.
Now, being the Americanized child of a Filipino that I am, I'm horrible with the names of the dishes. I grew up with my mom not telling me what anything was called and just being told to eat it. So I have a severe lack in trying to learn names. But I can say I've had nearly every dish Mariam's has to offer and they are exactly what you hope and expect when eating Filipino food.
You will always be treated like family (like every good Filipino establishment should) and you will always get amazing portions. You seriously get your money's worth here. They give you massive portions for great prices. Their lumpia makes my taste buds dance. You seriously can't go wrong here.
I'd just like to give kudos to the new owner for keeping with the atmosphere I had loved with the previous owners. I look forward to seeing what he continues to do with the place.
Mariam's is THE place to go in Virginia Beach for quality Filipino food other than my mama's house. Bring your friends and an appetite with you when you go.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jevon T.Upper Marlboro, MD40166223Mar 25, 2018
This is a spot that I've been wanting to try. I was greeted as soon as I walked in by one of the most enthusiastic host I've come across. He is the "Ambassador" of the restaurant, and is definitely the right person for the job. I was going to order off the menu until I saw there was a hot line towards the back of the restaurant. I took a look at what was available and everything looked good. The host offered samples of dishes I wanted to try. This guy doesn't turn down samples of good food. Everything I tried tasted good.
I'm the wrong person to send out for food when they're hungry. I'll try to order the entire menu. After my sampling, I settled on griniling, chicken adobo, pancit, pork lumpia, and a slice of cassava cake. I've eaten adobo, pancit and lumpia before. The pork lumpia was cooked to order and very good! They also offer chicken and beef, but at that time I would've had to wait for them to roll them. To be honest, the griniling didn't look like it would have much flavor. I was very wrong! The simple looking dish was surprisingly flavorful. The cassava cake was a new dish for me. It was very good. It reminded me of mildly sweetened sweet potato pie with a hint of coconut. I know it sounds crazy but it's good!
The location of the restaurant is in view if you're driving down Pleasure House Road. There isn't much parking, but they have two reserved spaces for customers ordering take-out. It was clean inside and had a lot of natural light. I'm looking forward to returning and trying more dishes.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Michael C.Virginia Beach, VA1462191Apr 15, 2018
Excellent tasting food and wonderful customer service. Only reason not 5 stars - ran out of BBQ for the day. . Wife found this place on Yelp and saw the BBQ and wanted to try it out. We ate so much that we forgot to take pictures of the main entrees. We definitely didn't pass on desserts. This is the only place I know that has taho available. Won my wife over. Their halo halo was also on point. Wish it were closer to our house but still worth the trip for us.
Michael and his sister were also very friendly with our kids and even got them fries when he saw they weren't ready for more Filipino food.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 1433249438344Apr 22, 2014Updated review
A well deserved update of my favorite place to get my Filipino on. It is my opinion based on other reviews that this is still somewhat of a hidden gem for Chicks Beach.
With now fifteen visits I can recommend on good authority this is a place for everyone to try. Don't let the fact it's ethnic food stop you. But as other reviewers have pegged as well as myself, it's Mariam's personality that steals the show, but the food will keep you coming back too.
The combination of awesome authentic dishes and Mariam's cheery attitude make the dining experience one of a kind. When I come here I feel as if I being welcomed into her home. As a matter of fact it's even more homey because Mariam's college age daughter is helping this Summer. Her husband is still in on Fridays and weekend.
Am I a super fan of Mariam's, yes indeed. I now change gears to evangelist to spread the word of AWESOME authentic Filipino food in sleepy Chicks Beach.Helpful 11Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0Nov 7, 2013Previous reviewSo I found myself today thinking that Mariam's was worthy of a twofur in the same week. I have been dreaming of the Lumpia since my last visit, but wanted to try some new things too.
Today it was Mariam that waited on me. I found out the young man from my last visit was her Nephew. The $4.99 deal was to appealing to not hit up for a second time in a row. But keep in mind they offer a lot off the menu too.
Mariam is an awesome energetic lady that never stops smiling. As guest came in the door she would yell across the room to make sure they knew she was glad to see them. Many of the customers entering the door were repeat which says a lot for a new business. She worked the room like a Ma'itre of a high end restaurant.
So here we go, today's lunch. I had a huge pile of Pancit, love! The Pompano which was a huge piece of half the fish including the tail which was out of my comfort zone, but I rolled with it. Also two Linguisa sausages and the four Lumpia which I paid for as a side..
When I mentioned I was friends with Jim B. things got very cozy. According to Marimam Jim's Yelp review brought down a whole community of Filipino's from a Williamsburg old folks home that referenced "Jim B", pretty hysterical. Any way, she then proceeded to say she wanted me to try her Turon (fried banana) which I was excited about and on the house.
Everything was again really tasty, but ultimately the Lumpia and sausages captured my heart on this visit. However, Mariam has another trick rolled up her sleeve. She said on a wet chilly day I needed some soup and served me up a bowl of Tirrola (traditional chicken soup) on the house. OMG!!! it was to die for and the broth, oh man... I literally did not mess with a spoon and just drank it right out of the cup.
This joint is legit and I encourage anyone within earshot of this review to give them a try. This is coming from the guy that won't even go to PF Changs that often. Don't let the fact it is Filipino deter you. This family is working very hard to earn your business and that it has for me in my two visits.Nov 4, 2013Previous reviewI have almost never been late for anything in my life. But it's down right embarrassing that it's taken this long to take a stroll into Mariam's since it's minutes from my home. Well I must admit this to my community of Yelp friends... I am a picky eater and when it comes to ethnic food I do tend to resist the urge of trying new things. Forget that I am consistently telling my own kids the old adage "if you have not tried it, how do you know you don't like it?" Today I threw caution to the wind and by gosh I was going to eat Filipino cuisine.
When entering I was immediately greeted by a younger man who appeared to be Filipino. The place was surprisingly busy at 1 PM. I did not know where to start with the menu and told the young man so. Once he knew it was my first time I felt like family. He led me over to the small buffet like area and gave me the low down on price and the type of traditional foods offered. Well the price was amazing, $4.99 two entree. They still had a good assortment of food left as well. But hold on, I had no idea what I wanted, let alone how to pronounce these dishes. No matter, a sampling plate was put in front of me and I was off to the races trying anything I wished.
Two women were filling up the bins as I was at the counter. I learned that this was the young man's Aunts busily working. He told them it was my first time and they said thank you and come back. I was getting such a warm feeling on the first visit and it was easy to get comfortable and not feel dumb about knowing nothing about this type of cuisine. I also looked over the menu and there is a lot here, enough it would take many visits to scratch the surface of this little place.
I ended up getting the Chicken Adobo (a traditional dish of chicken and vinegar), Pancit (fried noodles, chicken) and Lumpia (fried egg roll) It was all mounded into a to go plate for me and I never knew so much would even fit in that amount of space, but it did and it seemed to weigh a few pounds. Now on to how it tasted... The entire meal was really delicious and my favorite was without a doubt the Lumpia.
I am so happy I gave Mariam's a try today. This was some serious food, with obvious quality and just flat out delicious. Not to mention the price is by far one of the better lunch deals for the quantity you can find at the beach. The restaurant is clean and very welcoming of customers new to Filipino food.
If you too have trouble trying new things I urge you to give this place a try, you wont regret the opportunity Mariam and family have to offer. - Apr 5, 2014
Well what can I add that James R. hasn't already covered besides Great Food - great people! Finally made it in and the dishes is like how my mom makes it! Authentic and delish! Now for those who doesn't want Filipino food there are American dishes too. So there is something for everyone here.
I like they offer grilled fishes alternative to fried. I love the people they are friendly and welcoming...it's like your neighborhood diner, when you walk in- your a friend for life!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - May 22, 2014
Like the saying goes curiosity killed the cat, that is pretty much what happened
Here. Decided to check out this place due to its stellar reviews from fellow yelpers. However, I was disappointed that the food was mediocre at best. We orders basic staples like buko pandas, banana q but didn't't get a chance to taste it because it wasn't't available. Food was bland. Service on the other hand was friendly and the place was clean.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Gigi M.Phoenix, AZ5544809Sep 18, 2016
I was searching for a Filipino place on the way to MD from OBX and this place had the best reviews. Summary: not entirely disgusting but pretty close. Definitely ONLY for the Filipino who speaks and knows the cuisine. No Menu : look on our website was the response. What restaurant has NO MENUS!?! Whatever is available turo-turo style is the only food available. And again, no menus to describe the food. No signs on the turo-turo food as well.
I ordered tocino and adobo. Both were not tender nor flavorful enough. I don't and can't cook but all in all, i could have done a much much better job!
Awful, awful, awful. Jollibee was so much better, sad to say... at least they had menus!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Dec 1, 2013
Celebrating Small Business Saturday®.
I decided to come here after seeing several of my Yelp friends Reviews about how fantastic the food and service was at this establishment. I knew that I positively needed to try this place. The reviews were accurate, no need for exaggeration.
When Mom and I walked in we immediately received a warm, friendly greeting from Mariam. She has such a sweet countenance and a positive attitude. She is full of gratitude. The restaurant atmosphere is just as inviting as Mariam's personality. The place is decked in mostly warm tones. When you enter there is a drink fridge to the right to meet all of your thirst needs. Next to that was a grill where they were grilling whole fish and eggplant. Mariam explained that they cut the eggplant and top it with egg to make an eggplant omelet. Then there were deep fryer bins where they were preparing another customers order. Mariam was making a larger than life serving of Chicken Pancit.
At the back Mariam's daughter told me about the specials and entree combinations. I decided to go with the Chicken Pancit, none was available because a new batch was being whipped up so there would be a wait. I also ordered four Turon, way more than I needed but it was only $1 and I got excited. I have loved Turon since high school. Mariam's daughter made mine fresh! While we waited for the Pancit Mariam brought over ice water and four beef lumpia with sauce for us to try on the house. Mom doesn't eat beef so they were all mine.
We left Mariam to wait for her husband to arrive and help her replenish the offerings that were depleted by the lunch rush. The Pancit and Turon were both delicious and we had a very enjoyable dinner. It is nice to have such wonderful family businesses in the area.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Steven S.Long Island, NY7472931759Jul 2, 2015
Located on the side of the shopping center, not inside the center! A Jewel of a restaurant .. Upon entering we were greeted with smiles & hellos very welcoming, not to mention the aroma of home cooking in the air.
Plenty of seating very clean & up to date decor. I couldn't believe how cheap the food was $4.99 Rice or Noodles or both w/ 1 side & for $5.99 u get 2 sides. *Very generous portions*
Pancit noddles was bangging & the Adobe Chicken was cooked perfectly & full of flavor. Huge chunks of chicken!
The Eggplant Meat Vegetables in peanut butter sauce. I thought the sauce, would of been over powering. But to my surprise it all blended up perfectly for my taste buds.
The pork & potatoes one of my Favs, Fatty Tender Meat with potatoes!
The Lumpia Beef Egg Rolls w/ Sweet dipping sauce served right out the Fryer *Enough Said*.
Overall very friendly staff, it's truly home cooking from OG's. They made me feel welcome from beginning to end, and they have the cleanest bathrooms, I have ever seen in a restaurant!Helpful 8Thanks 0Love this 8Oh no 0 - Kate A.Fayetteville, NC1032510Jul 22, 2017
We're in Virginia Beach for a weekend trip and yelped a Filipino Restaurant. This place is a typical Filipino point point (Turo Turo). Usually served with paper plate and utensils. I haven't eaten any Filipino food in almost a year now since my trip back in the Philippines.
My husband and I ordered the ff: kare kare, daing, galunggong, pancit , rice.
I came here to eat Kare Kare.
I wish it had a creamy/thick texture. This one had a watery consistency. I was so disappointed = 1 star
Daing and GG fish was cooked right= 5 stars
Pancit was okay, I think it's too salty though = 3 stars
Rice was okay too, I wish they serve Jasmine Rice it would've been better= 3 stars
Bathroom was clean, nothing fancy. What's important is that it was clean. Good job on this! = 4 stars
The owner was accommodating and attentive. He answered any questions we had about the menu= 5 stars
Price was reasonable = 5 starsHelpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0
