I agree with the previous posters, and wish I could give less than 1 star:
Dr. Shelly was my Doctor in the early 1990's. I admit that her chose her then-office on Comm Ave because it was "convenient", but now acknowledge that if you want GOOD healthcare, finding a Dr. isn't the same as finding the closest 7-11.
I once asked for a referral to a dermatologist to get some moles removed; Dr. S. said she could do them, and I still have scars (a later dermatologist removed others with NO SCARS). The office was always dirty, felt rushed, and the staff was always grouchy.
The final straw came when I complained of "not feeling right" for a while. She told me I needed vitamins. Um, OK. Fast forward from the vitamin incident, I was home one morning, got very dizzy/sweaty all at once, and passed out, knocking out a tooth as I hit the floor. My NEW primary care doctor sent me straight to a hospital for A LOT of tests, and I have been taking medication for my heart for 12 years now. Yes, my vitamin levels were fine - what I needed was a CARDIOLOGIST.
I would be dead if she were still my doctor, which I told her receptionist when I tried to get my medical records back. They REFUSED to give them to me (why? maybe because they would have shown I received lousy care?), and eventually I decided to just forget the records and FORGET Dr. Shelly.
Save your health and go elsewhere!
I agree with Audrey. Dr. Shelly is great if you work and need an office in the city after hours and she certainly started out nice enough. She only allots 15 minutes per patient though and you definitely tend to feel like she's herding you in and out. It's like fast food but with health care. Once I had an appointment and after I arrived to a locked door, I was notified that they would be late. I ended up having a whole two hours to eat lunch at a nearby restaurant. The staff is friendly but cannot handle referrals. After I broke my arm, I needed to deal with all the health insurance woes. The receptionist kept giving me the shuffle and one day I had had enough and gave her a stern request to have my referrals taken care of. I later received an angry call from Dr. Shelly herself chewing me out for attacking her receptionist. Way to run a practice... Save yourself the headache and take a lunch break to see a good doctor.
It is uncommon for me to write a review, but my experiences with this office need to be shared. If you are looking for a doctor who can take you on as a new patient, see you quickly, and has after-hours then Dr. Shelly might be a good option for you. However if you intend to see her for any issues more serious then a common cold/flu or your yearly visit, I would seek medical care else where. In my experience it is common for Dr. Shelly to compare your problems to all of her other patients and suggest remedies such as yoga for problems that the patient feels are more serious. Also, another frustrating part of this practice is the staff. While the staff is pleasant, they consist of only a few young college students. There is no office manager to voice concerns to. I have had endless troubles with the staff billing correctly and processing referrals. After months of feeling frustrated I finally switched to a different PCP. My suggestion to anyone having trouble seeing a PCP in Boston, would be to book with Dr. Shelly so you have a PCP just in case, but make an appointment with another PCP as well (Someone from BWH, MGH, etc). The other PCP might not be able to see you for 3+ months, but at least you will have someone else lined up if you do not like Dr. Shelly.
