11 reviews for Mare Island Golf Course
I feel like this place is a hidden gem that is often overlooked by Bay Area golfers. However, aside from the fact that you really have to drive out of your way to get here, there are plenty of great things about the course:
LAYOUT: It's like 2 courses for the price of 1! The front 9 is fairly challenging and has that traditional layout of trees, doglegs, the like. The back 9 is more of a links-style course that features really hilly holes and numerous bunkers.
*NOTE* DO NOT WALK THIS COURSE! I almost never ride, and this course is just about impossible to walk!
PACE OF PLAY: The two times that I've been here have always been in the late afternoon, and the course is just about empty! The great part is that you can get out for $10-15 on the weekday, as they have a fantastic twilight deal. Definitely get in on this one if you can.
MAINTENANCE: Aside from the Canadian goose droppings, this place is pretty well kept. Doesn't make the tricky greens any easier, though.
PRICE: As people have mentioned, this place really give you bang for your buck! If the course weren't so far from Berkeley, I'd definitely go more often..
A couple more notes. Only downside on this place is that they make you come in at 7:30, even though there's still daylight out. If you don't, the marshal will definitely get on your ass. Good thing there's a really friendly cart/greenskeeper who went to go pick up my friend and me last time when we were late. :) Do say hi to him, he's the one with the British accent.
Great place to play, wish it were more accessible.

This is the best twighlight deal, $20 with cart! I went once last year and the course wasn't in good condition but for the past few months it has been pretty good. I don't think they have a cart girl but it might also just be because I only play there in the afternoon. It's hilly so definitely get a cart. Some people will walk the front 9 which is flatter than the back 9.

Mare Island is a golf experience unlike many that you will have the good fortune to ever experience.
The front nine represent what is/was the oldest US golf course west of the Mississippi. The back nine were built in 2000 are are radically different- sort of a two for the price of one deal. The highest the fees get are $44 with a cart, but there are also several discounts, so ask (AARP, DoD, YMCA, NAMBLA, etc.,) and they'll accommodate.
From the regular tees, the course is challenging, not too long but with plenty of par 5s. From the tips, you will be sweating out 85% of your tee shots. None of the greens are easy, but the fairways and greens are kept in good shape. There are two kinds of rough- purgatory and hell. Oh, and by the way, purgatory is an average of 3 yds across- so play conservatively.
The clientele here aren't overly fancy/good at golf/learned in the etiquette of the sport, but are all of good humor.
So, next time you're in Vallejo (?)(!) you have to try this place out- you'll come back!

This course is a hidden gem in the bay area and Vallejo. Granted you have to go through Vallejo and then navigate through the old naval station, but in the end its a great course. The layout is unique. The front nine, which provide great views of the bay, is pretty straight forward with a couple of dog legs. But the back 9 is exhausting, thus why this course is not walkable. The layout is great but its the hills that kill you. The back 9 fairways are pretty narrow. I only pulled out my driver once on the back nine. But the links style layout and narrow fairways make the course challenging. The only con is that Sat. and Sun. are their busiest days so expect crowds if you wanna play on the weekend. But during the week its empty. Will definitely play this course again.
Tough course to walk!
Got to tee it up with a couple old golf buddies recently and we met early for 18 holes of fun at Mare Island. We are committed walkers when playing golf and that was a bad idea here! The front nine is a decent walk, but the back is up and down hills and it seems to take forever to get to the clubhouse! I wish I had a goat as a caddy that day...
At the turn, you get a chance to purchase beers, sodas, hot dogs, etc... from the snack shack located in an old army bunker. Weird, but cool.
The folks that run the golf course are friendly, the price for golf wasnt bad, and the course is in really good condition.
They say its the oldest course west of the Mississippi, but Burlingame Country club in NoCal boasts the same. Who knows?
Best thing was on the 3rd tee box; Blackberry bushes. Fresh snacking!

I spoke to the Mare Island Grounds Keeper and he informed me that Mare Island Golf Club is THE oldest golf course West of the Mississippi built in 1892! In addition, Mare Island is THE first capital of Cali, too! Wow!
Here's the URL for Mare Island Golf Club:

This Golf Club Cafe also makes very delicious, gargantuan sandwiches for $6.00. Playing 18 holes here will costs the following:

My mom's partner, Mario told me Matt Sullivan, General Manager for Mare Island Golf Club will take Mario on a golf tour of this historic golf course. What a treat!

This track will humble you, and God forbid you don't get your scoring done on the first six holes--most somewhat level--because the rest of the course punishes wildness. I break 90 on typical munis but have never done so at Mare. The measure of a good golf course is every hole is different--Mare has that. The Marshals don't do a hole helluva a lot here but when do they at any place? Signature hole on the front is the narrow downhill 3rd hole par 3 about 190 yards that you have to enter the green via a narrow gap.
The greens here are small, pie-plate. The back 9 is a hilly beast with frequent windy conditions and ample sand. You have an uphill par 4 400 yard long 13th? and then 14 is a par 4 shooting down off a mountain top.
The three finishing holes are among the toughest in the Bay Area: long uphill 420 yard par 4, dogleg left tight par 4 and uphill 18th with usually a blind 2nd shot if you don't have a rocket drive.
You also have the funk factor since the place is an old military base and there are literal bunkers built into hillsides. It's a memorable course with good value. I would only recommend walking for the fit and on days when it's under 70-degrees.

Sweet course waiting for me? Not so much....
Mare Island GC is a tale of two courses....the front nine has been there for about 100 years and looks it, and not in an Olympic Club sort of way. The back nine is hilly and uninspiring. Condition is shoddy, but the views are spectacular. Not too expensive.....
Then only place to get food that is decent on Mare Island. Limited to sandwiches, hot dogs, a few salads, and philly steak sandwiches. There is beer - and Jack Daniels. Mad props for the free popcorn from a old skool popcorn machine too!
