Great lunch special, granted it is pretty much the same one they use every day,, but it is very filling and decent prices, can be crowded during lunch and hard to get a table, and/or share one with someone??? Friendly staff and spicy salsa, prefer mine with more tomato chunks..
This is my favorite "sleazy taco joint" in the Bay Area. In fact, I don't actually remember the name of the place - all of my co-workers and I just refer to it as "sleazy taco joint." Now... that said, I only bestow this title on the absolute BEST hole-in-the-wall taquerias. Sleazy = fantabulous.
I work right around the corner from this place and if I didn't think my co-workers would judge/mock me, I would probably eat here 3+ times / week. Ah, peer pressure! So, I'm exhibiting EXTREME self-control and typically only eat here once a week.
I ALWAYS order the same thing and it is ALWAYS perfect: The 3 taco special (w/ grilled chicken) which comes with rice & beans. AND a Mexican Coke in a bottle. And this ALWAYS adds up to $7.07.
The tacos are the tiny street tacos with two small corn tortillas, meat, salsa, onions, and cilantro. And the Mexican Coke in a bottle is pure heaven. (Why is the Coca-Cola Corporation cheating Americans with beet sugar while our friends in Mexico get to enjoy the perfection of cane sugar? )
BURRITOS!
Only tried their tacos and nachos once or twice, but I love the burritos here!
- All the important ingredients are inside - meat, tomato, cilantro, onions, sour cream, guac.
- They're well-proportioned so no one ingredient dominates.
- Large enough but not overwhelming.
- It's a little spicy, which gives it some punch.
- Comes with crispy chips.
My fave's the chicken super burrito at ~$6.
OTHER AWESOMENESS
Other pluses of Mar:
- Accepts credit cards.
- Great selection of Mexican drinks like horchata, beer, and Mexican Coke.
- Plenty of comfortable seating with a Spanish program of some sort playing on the TV.
- Great for large group takeout orders - we've ordered around 20 burritos before and they're ready in 20 minutes.
- Friendly staff.
- Plenty of parking.
- In a semi-rundown strip mall. It's not classy but it's not ghetto and I've never felt unsafe walking in the area.
Only complaint: They need a more Americanized name. It doesn't have to be called "Bob's Burrito Shack" but I love this place and can never remember the name when I want to look it up to place a phone order, which definitely costs them some business.
My favorite taqueria is still Los Charros in Downtown Mountain View, but when I'm working late in Redwood City, Mar Y Tierra (dude, needs a better name) is the next best thing!

This is my favorite taqueria. I like it better than Pancho Villa and other places in the Mission. They have a seafood soap that is amazing. And the cocktail de camarones, I really like, because the broth is very thin and refreshing. Other places [like Pancho Villa], the broth is thicker, and kinda tomato-pasty.
They must use a ton of cilantro here, so if you don't like cilantro, this probably is not the place for you. But the cilantro is a bonus for me.

hidden in an otherwise unappealing shopping center (discount grocery store, big lots, radio shack, round table pizza), this is one of the best taquerias in one of the best taqueria cities in the world.
The Al Pastor is heavenly, just a tad greasy, but the seafood tostadas (shrimp, ceviche) are unparalleled.
Steer clear of the Salsa and Chips, save your room... on bad days the salsa tastes like nail polish remover.
Update:
After focusing too much on the tierra, I finally tried the mar. The shrimp ceviche tostada comes tastefully served with a small slice of avocado, and is a welcome contrast to the heavier marinated meats. While the super and de lujo burritos are still muy sabrosos, a meaty taco and a ceviche tostada are cheaper and just as mmmm.

yummy tostadas with nice authentic flavor. You'll find this place to be attended mostly by Hispanics, which I take to be an excellent indicator.
