Heck yes!  I'm tempted to end the review here, but I don't think you would take this 5-star review seriously if I didn't elaborate.

Maple View Farm is something I have never experienced in my twenty years in California.  There are cows about 150 feet away from you.  They are eating GRASS.  These cows make the milk and ice cream that they scoop for you.  You buy milk in glasses that you reuse and bring back when you want more fresh milk!  It's like the 1950's in the best way possible.

Maple View Farm is a welcome anachronism in today's high-density cow-farms where the cows are penned up in 3ft by 6 ft stalls and fed straw/hay.  I hope to live close enough to Maple View Farm to buy my milk here every week.

The ice cream is also unexpectedly decadent.  My girlfriend loved her "Chocolate Orange" and "Coffee" and I loved my "Grape Nuts" although my Grape Nuts were a bit too sweet.  Oh yeah, and there are rocking chairs facing the cute cows!

Tragically, the Maple View store in Carrboro has closed permanently and will reopen as another Fresh (see my review of Fresh at http://www.yelp.com/bi...), so now I feel like I need to give some love to the Maple View in Hillsborough.  Fresh is apparently the biggest buyer of Maple View Ice Cream so I get why the store was sold to them, but my heart remains loyal to the original vendor.

The Country Store was my first brush with Maple View anything.  A friend of mine who lives in Hillsborough took me there when I was visiting the Chapel Hill area from Charlotte.  They don't have the richest ice cream I've ever had (hence the four stars- The Parlour beats it in that category), but the prices are right and the flavors aren't too sweet.  I personally like any of the chocolate flavors that are combined with fruit (chocolate orange and so on), as well as the surprisingly good rice krispy flavor.  Yum!

Now the ice cream is good, but what really warrants the drive out to Hillsborough is the lovely atmosphere at this store.  Bring a friend or your family, get yourself an ice cream cone, and relax in one of their rocking chairs and enjoy the view.  When you're ready to leave, bring home a bottle of their creamy chocolate milk if you're feeling especially indulgent.

I absolutely love Maple View ice cream.  The ice cream is nice and creamy, and it tastes so fresh - you can practically see the cows that help make this ice cream from the storefront.  The waffle cones are great, and the ice cream flavors are extensive.  I'm a sucker for chocolate chip cookie dough, but their Honey Toasted Almond, Peach, and Carolina Crunch flavors are also quite good.  They also have the standard flavors, which don't fail to satisfy.

There are rocking chairs on their front porch where you can enjoy your treat with a gorgeous view of the surrounding farm land.  It's well worth the trek out there (which actually isn't that far from downtown Chapel Hill / Carrboro).

In my opinion, this is THE place to go for ice cream in the Chapel Hill area.

The sweet scent inside of the store is heavenly! I couldn't tell if it was the ice cream, the waffle cones, or both but I do know that I did not want to leave.

Then came time to order ice cream, talk about choices. Choosing a flavor was almost as hard as choosing a college. I sampled the Butter Pecan a long time favorite, it was good but not the best I've had. I decided I wanted some chocolate and tried the Double Chocolate Cookie Dough, it was great. But I still couldn't decide which should be my final flavor, so I got diplomatic and got a Large Sundae with both flavors. It also included 2 toppings (I chose bananas and hot fudge), cherries, pecans, and whipped cream. That's a lot of indulgence for $4.50!

I first sat on a rocking chair on the porch to eat my ice cream, but eventually the sun was burning my leg up so I relocated to the grass by a small tree for some shade. All this place needs is a big shady tree for people to sit under when the sun's too much to handle.

It was way too much ice cream for me to finish before it turned into soup. When it was time to go I just had to go back into the store one last and take a big whiff and just hoped that it would linger.

Do the following and you will be anything but disappointed:

    1.  Bring a friend, later in the day, and drive the few miles to the Hillsborough outskirts to Maple View.
    2.  Once you get there, get some fresh-churned ice cream.
    3.  Go outside on the porch and find two rocking chairs next to each other
    4.  Watch the sun set as your ice cream melts (in your mouth).

Effing love this place.  Wish there were a sixth star to give....

This was a very good treat for my family. All the ice cream was natural with no extra stuff added in. But I thought the flavor of the ice cream was a little bland. But it's great priced. We got a double scoop on fresh homemade waffle cones for around $4.50. It was a lot of ice cream.

I really enjoyed it. My family liked the ice cream more than I did so I gave them a 4 star. I would have given 3 stars but was out voted. I'm sure we will be back.

I agree with all the praise (and flavor recommendations) posted by the other reviewers.  One of the great things about the area we live is the ability to just drive a few miles from home and feel like you're in a different world.

Its a lovely indulgence to be able to enjoy delicious locally made ice cream in a rocking chair gazing westward across the hills and fields.

But I would make a couple of changes...
    (1) It is unfortunate that the rocking chairs have to be chained down.  Kind of takes away from the bucolic illusion.  Is there another solution that wouldn't be as aversive aesthetically?

    (2) COWS!  Where are the cows?  With a giant, empty field next to the country store, why not throw up a fence and throw a few heifers in there to graze.  Not a petting zoo... just a few representives of our dairy benefactors there so we can say 'thanks'.

I have tried everything in the store, and it's all fabulous. The freshly made waffle cone, the fresh local milk (without growth hormones and in re-usable bottles), the fresh cheeses, the excellent beef (also from the farm), fresh baked breads, locally made chocolate truffles. It's a like a country store and an ice cream paradise in one spot.
The banana split is killer. The chocolate milk will make you chubby, and it's worth it.
In my estimation, the best flavors are: Carolina crunch, pistachio, ginger, cookies and cream, and the peach is a classic not to be missed.
The best time to go is at sunset, when you can sit in a rocking chair and look out over the farm where your ice cream is made.
If you have energetic kids, this is the best place to take them, or you can watch other people's kids get high on ice cream run around on the grass.

What could possibly be better than a quaint little shop in the middle of the country that serves farm-fresh milk, ice cream, meat and all sorts of other goodies? So call me a yuppie (I dare you!), but I actually make Maple View Farms a regular stop on my weekly shopping trip. The milk is simply unbeatable (and greenies like me love the idea of recyclable glass bottles - who'da thunk?), the cuts of meat are yum-yum tasty, the ice cream is to die for (and very reasonably priced - especially if you buy it in half-gallon tubs), and the other goodies like eggs and soap make it a real locovore's shopping haven. In addition there's a huge patio where locals gather to swap gossip and spin yarns about whatever goes in in that neck of the woods, and bicyclists seem to flock to this area to get away from the normal traffic ruckus.

Regardless of what your local collegiate allegiance is, I highly recommend trying the Carolina Crunch ice cream flavor. It is, to put it mildly, a little scoop of heaven in a waffle cone. :-)

Nothing special about this place. Just another joint that time has forgotten, allowing people to mistakenly equate "old fashioned" with "good."

Setting:  Pretty view, but nothing distinctly different than any other corner in that area.

Shop:  Slim pickings, but nice folk.

Goods:  Limited cheese selection, which is a good thing because I've not like any that I've tried.  Extensive ice cream, but I wouldn't waste much time on it when there are better ice creams to be had.  The double chocolate peanut butter would be more accurately described as "cocoa and burnt peanut shell."  That's exactly what it tasted like.  And the meat is all frozen in a case in the corner.  What exactly makes this unique from any typical grocery store?

Better option: Blue Bunny Peanut Butter ice cream and your front porch.

When you are caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday work and school, the Maple View Farm County Store is the perfect escape.  Just take a short drive from Chapel Hill and you will be transported to the countryside, complete with rolling green meadows, cows, rocking chairs and delicious ice cream!

I have been several times and the service is always friendly and the ice cream is creamy and delicious.  They have a great selection of flavors--all the traditional standbys and several seasonal specialties.  In the winter time, my friend got a candied bacon ice cream that he said was great.

It's very kid-friendly with lots of outdoor space for running around.  There are lots of rocking chairs on the porch overlooking the fields, where you can sit and relax while you eat your ice cream.  The only downside is that there are only a couple chairs inside, so if the weather isn't great (too hot, raining, too cold), you might end up eating your ice cream in your car.

An awesome place to get ice cream and enjoy the scenery of North Carolina's farms. We came here with some local friends and got our cones of ice cream and sat out on the porch in rocking chairs (& chased down our friends' roaming toddler).

Great ice cream - i got a scoop of Carolina Crunch. yum! They have a pretty good selection of fresh ice cream flavors.

When we went in the mid afternoon, the place was hopping with locals and visitors. While you can sit inside (and on a hot day you might really want to), the long front porch overlooks the roadway and the farms and pasture lands around the area and has a row of rocking chairs just right for relaxing with your cone.

Technically it's in Hillsborough, though really it's probably closer to Carrboro / Chapel Hill - and is at the corner of Dairyland Road and Rocky Ridge Road. Definitely worth it.

They also sell ice cream to go, milk, honey, and beef.

The Maple View Farm Country Store is located a short drive outside of Chapel Hill, but is absolutely worth the drive out.  I mean, seriously - how many other ice cream parlors can you go to where you can sit in rocking chairs on the front porch and gaze upon the farmland that feeds the cows that produced the milk that went into your ice cream?

Coming from California where we have seen a huge surge in ice cream parlors that are really pushing boundaries with experimental flavors, I must say that the flavor selection here did not really impress me.  Still, they have a variety of solid flavors that taste good and fresh.  I had  a scoop of the Toffee Macaroon and a scoop of the Carolina Crunch (Heath Bar, Butterfinger, Caramel Cups, and Caramel).  The Toffee Macaroon had a subtle flavor that was kind of overpowered by the super-sweet Carolina Crunch.  I also tasted and enjoyed the Cinnamon, Coffee, and Honey Toasted Almond, all of which were a bit lighter than the Carolina Crunch.

The scoops were quite generous!  And affordable, too: 1 scoop (4oz) for $2.50 and 2 scoops (8oz) for $3.50.  I actually felt like the ounces stated were an understatement, but perhaps we had a generous scooper since it was a record-breaking 90 degree day.

I come to North Carolina at least twice a year, and I plan on making a visit here one of my must-do things.  For those who don't want to make the trip out to the country store, they also have an in-town location right behind the Spotted Dog on Weaver Street in Carrboro.  In addition, their ice cream is sold in a variety of locations around North Caroina (and perhaps even more widespread than that).

As a bonus, the country store sells fresh milk, beef, and pork from the farm, as well as some crafts from local artisans.

This was a good place to spend an evening eating ice cream and sitting on the porch. The ice cream was solid, and the countryside is beautiful. It also only took like 25 minutes to get there from Durham. Totally worth it once in a while in my book. You should check it out to get outside the city on a hot day.

The combination of beautiful atmosphere & amazing ice cream makes this place by far my favorite place to get ice cream.

While you enjoy eating delicious ice cream, you can sit on the huge porch in a rocking chair and gaze off into the distance at the sunset and the beautiful farm landscape.  It's hard to believe that this place is so close to Chapel Hill, because for a few moments while enjoying the scenery you forget you are so close to the hubbub and zone off into complete relaxation.

There are about 15 or so flavors to choose from inside the farmstore, each made fresh on the farm.  Maple View also sells other fresh products such as milk & cheese.  The milk is great as well!  You can buy a half-gallon (possibly gallon too) & bring back the glass container when you're done.  Plus, It gives you an excuse to keep coming back (not that you need one)!

I personally recommend the banana & chocolate chip cookie dough flavors of ice cream.  You can tell that the banana flavor is made with 100% real bananas, with little hunks of bananas mixed in.  What makes the cookie dough flavor great is the rich, buttery ice cream they use as a base.  Instead of tasting solely like vanilla, it is so rich & creamy.  I recommend both of these flavors in a sugar cone.  But there are so many to choose from and each and every flavor I've ever ordered has been DELICIOUS!

In addition to the rocking chair seating there are a few tables inside and some picnic tables on the side of the farm store.  Also, if you bike, it is an amazing and picturesque bike ride there!  I would recommend it!

I've surprisingly never been to the other location, which is in Carrboro (near where I live).  I think this is because I love enjoying the quaint farm atmosphere if I'm going to eat some Maple View ice cream!  Otherwise, it's just not the same!

P.S. I cannot wait to make my first trip there this year since Spring is now here!

Our bike trips on Dairyland Rd, usually involve a stop at Maple View store. It's also the halfway point of the Cup and Cone bike tour (the 67 mile route).

It's a great place. They've got fresh milk and ice cream. They've got probably over 2 dozen flavors. I like their Rocky Road and their Chapel Hill Crunch one. You can sit out on the porch and look across the field to see the cows who made the milk for your ice cream. Hard to get more local than that.

They've got picnic tables on the side and a post to hitch your horse too. There's a water fountain to refill your bottle with if you rode a bike too.

Only thing I'd change about the place, would be to add ceiling fans to the porch to keep the bees away during the summer.

Cute country store in Hillsborough, complete with rocking chairs lined up on the veranda out front. They sell dozens of homemade ice cream flavours and really excel in their sweet cream-based flavours like maple walnut, toasted honey almond, Carolina crunch, cookies and cream, butter pecan, and cookie dough. The ice cream is soft, creamy and hits the spot on a swelteringly hot NC summer day. Portions are generous and a kiddie-sized cone is usually enough to hit the spot for me. This location also sells fresh milk, eggs, and even farm-fresh veggies sometimes. The only downside is that the view from the front porch is somewhat lacking (as it overlooks much of the parking lot). Great place to take the family for a summer treat.

MV's location is definitely what I would consider the boondocks.  Make sure you know where your going before getting to close because the cell coverage is spotty at best and Google Maps 'no workey'.  Once you finally arrive, you'll be a happy camper.  They have several cases of different homemade ice cream flavors and multiple toppings/cone/cup options.  The ice cream is superb and well worth the trip, but the deck with rocking chairs was my favorite part.  Great view, yummy ice cream, and relaxing.  Doesn't get much better than that.

I feel like I should give this place a higher rating because of the atmosphere and take-home milk and eggs, but as an ice cream shop, it's ok.  The flavors are hit-or-miss; strawberry, chocolate, coffee, and banana are great, but the vanilla is surprisingly disappointing, and the only way you'd know what flavor the mango is is by reading the label.  The flavors that are done well are done very well, but there are relatively few.

I've got some Maple View ice cream....  And I'm gonna eat it all..   (See Eddie Murphy in Delirious..)

I grew up in the Boston area and for some reason, they've got some of the best ice cream in the country.  We're talking Steve's, Emack & Bolio, Herrell's.  They invented the smoosh-in that Cold Stone Creamery built itself around!   So I've always been super-picky about my ice cream.  The best place I've found in the Triangle area is Maple View Farm.

Who can resist the pastoral view you gaze upon as you sit on an old-time rocking chair, working your way through a dee-licious cup of ice cream?  Lines can be a bit long but the staff moves quickly and it gives you some time to choose your favorite flav for the day.  I groove on the Carolina Crunch and the Almond Toast, but you can't go wrong with any of the flavors.  And while the Carrboro Maple View is good, the cream is even better at this location.  I'm guessing they don't freeze it before transport.

I once biked all the way out to Maple View and being as out of shape I am, wanted to toss my cookies when I finally arrived.  But did that stop me from ordering some ice cream?  Hell no!   I'm downing a double scoop cup and suffering the 10 miles back home.  And you know what?  It was worth it...

Pumpkin Pie ice cream with Special Dark Hot Fudge, whipped cream, and a cherry on top? YES PLEASE!

My boyfriend and I agreed, as did the friends that took us: Best ice cream we'd had in a LONG time, if not ever. Its a neat little shop, with a few tables inside, a refrigerated shelf with milk, cream, butter, a few cheeses, and the like on one end, and a couple of freezers with take home containers, ice cream cakes, and some AMAZING looking steaks on the other. They had a solid selection of probably 15 flavors of ice cream, and while I had my heart set on pumpkin pie from the start, the peanut butter and grape jelly almost changed my mind. Prices were far cheaper than anything you'd see at Baskin Robbins or Ben and Jerry's, and I think the ice cream was far superior.

The rocking chairs on the front porch were cute, but the bees were not. But that's the only negative I can think of for Maple View. Had I not been in town visiting friends, I probably would have ended up buying a bunch of dairy from them and killing myself consuming it before it went bad :)

First of all, Maple View Farm is not in Hillsboro, it's just outside Chapel Hill near Carboro. The map is almost accurate on this page. That said, I had to mention this place because I think about it whenever I want a great ice cream and to sit in a "Field of Dreams" atmosphere eating it.

This place is a slice of heaven. Pull up from the back road onto the gravel parking lot, pick your ice cream from behind the counter inside and sit on one of many wooden rocking chairs on the front porch and look at the scenery; a cornfield and a farm. You can also pick up fresh milk in bottles, just like the old days.

This is the kind of place straight from central casting "we need an idyllic location where our characters; a crusty grandpa and his sweet granddaugther sit quietly and enjoy the silence over a cone of ice cream!" This is the place; I make a trip every time I go to Chapel Hill.

Maple View Farm has a couple of things that you just can't find many places and one that I can't find anywhere else in the doggone country... Glass in milk jars, oh yeah... bring them back for credit so they recycle em, yer darn tootin right... and at the country store (though they sell the milk and such many places--even Harris Teeters have picked it up, along with some stores at farmers markets, like J&S in Greensboro)... what's not to love--a big porch with rocking chairs facing a beautiful countryside, ice cream (or milkshakes) to eat on a hot summer day, and people that love their work and can tell you a whole lot about the industry.

Now... I'm giving MVF 5 stars because of what they do that so far I haven't found another place that does... SELL PURE CREAM. That's right. Go check the cream from Organic Valley or Food Lion or Pet (eww!) or Horizon... see stuff like "carrageenan?" Yeah, seaweed based thickener that RUINS things like bechamel sauce... so imagine my delight in verifying with them that their cream is NOT (at least as of now) thickened by anything but the process of taking off the fattiest stuff and putting it in the containers. That said, it also lasts a lot longer than the date listed, but I didn't tell you that.

Did I mention they used to make some amazing chocolate milk? I haven't had it in ages, but its ingredients went like this: milk, cream, sugar, cocoa, period.

They also *used to* have the best egg nog on the planet. Now... I'm back to Sealtest... not sure what happened, but their recipe went bubble gummy, so I stopped drinking it in December 2007 after being very happy the year prior...

Fair warning, now, before I get huffed and puffed at. I praise the cream for no thickeners... the ice cream, though, does have them. Most do... I eat Earth Fare ice cream because so far it still doesn't... but yeah, I don't actually buy the ice cream-it's more of an "at the farm" thing for me... I'm sold (and broke from it) on the glass jars of milk, cream, chocolate milk, and oh yeahhh the best best buttermilk on the planet. Now where am I supposed to get THAT here in Seattle?

Man, I miss my southern foods.

Let's start by stating that I love ice cream, and I have had some of the best ice cream there is to offer in my life and travels, but Maple View is the tops. I wish we had one here in California, but if I am in N.C. again I will drive out of my way to experience Maple View Farm again ... and again hopefully. First the ice cream, it is more heaven than ice cream, it is without a doubt the best tasting, most fresh and creamy ice cream in the world ... yes .. I said it .. the world! I tried several flavors and they were all really good but the whole experience was amazing, the fine folks at Maple View are friendly and helpful and the scenery is so relaxing. When we were there it was October and the fields around the farm were full of pumpkins and corn and you could smell the fresh hay, it was so far away from the everyday work a world I am used to. What can you say about an establishment that lines the front porch with rocking chairs so you can relax and enjoy the view and your tasty treat. My hats off to Maple View, in my opinion you have the best ice cream in life.

Though you can no longer take a tour of the farm (or pet the pretty cows), Maple View is still worth a trip out to Hillsborough. It's pretty and rural, and you can sit on one of the dozen rocking chairs on the big front porch at the store and take it all in (while working away on your two scoops of banana -- definitely try the banana! -- ice cream). The milkshakes are also amazing. The featured flavors rotate out seasonally (peach and banana in the summer, pumpkin-colored icecream with bits of candy-corn for Halloween, etc.).

As another reviewer mentioned, the store sales all sorts of dairy products; so if you're a locavore, into sustainability, or just want some good, truly farm-fresh goods, you can get them here. Maple View also has ice cream shops in Carrboro and Hillsborough; the one in Carrboro seems immensely successful, so here's hoping they soon expand into Durham and Raleigh!

The brilliance of Maple View at the real farm. Could this be any more quaint and beautiful. Nothing beats sitting on the rocking chairs watching the sun set over the fields while enjoying the best ice cream ever!!!

Went here tonight with friends from out of town and it was wonderful. For a Duke alum (me) to eat something called "Carolina Crunch" was a little frightening....but...it was great.  The banana was also great.  This place continues to wow us, even after several years.  Something about those rocking chairs on the front porch....ahhhhh!

Maple View is a local dairy farm that makes a variety of dairy products, from homemade ice cream to milk and butter - they also sell beef. They sell their products in local stores and at ice cream parlors in Carrboro and Hillsborough, but if you have the time, do yourself a favor and make the drive out to the country store, off Rocky Ridge Road and Dairyland Road in Hillsborough, adjacent to the farm itself.

You'll love the rural, quiet setting, where you can order your ice cream and sit in a rocking chair on the porch overlooking the farm.  They have a lot of good flavors to choose from - my faves are the Carolina Crunch and cookie dough.  They also serve up good milkshakes. They have different specials each Wednesday and on the weekends, so check out the Web site to see what they're offering. Prices are good, and it's very kid-friendly too (I hear they sponsor birthday parties as well!).

A perfect example of a great idea put into action effectively.  Well done, guys.

The only downside to this place is how hard it is to get there, but it's definitely worth it.  They make amazing ice cream, serve it with a smile, and let you enjoy it in a pastoral atmosphere of seemingly perpetual sunset (sunset is definitely the best time to come here).

There is no bad flavor here, and I should know since I've tried most of them.  Don't just come for a scoop and go, though.  Rather, make a day of it.  Get a couple of friends together, bring a frisbee and hang around enjoying ice cream and the pervasively happy atmosphere that they've so proudly established.

So, I am currently "training" for a Century bike tour out in Utah and thus far, my said "training" has consisted of me biking the estimated 7 miles out of town, down winding, country roads out to Maple View Farm to eat ice cream, sit on the rocking chair front porch, marvel at the landscape and then make the 7 mile trek back home again :)  I've done this several times over the past few months or so and let me tell you, it is just the best!  I love destination rides, especially when they culminate in a delicious ice cream treat :P  The service is always friendly and helpful.  It is fun to sample a few flavors before deciding and the employees never act grumpy about you asking for just one more.  So far, my favorites, on separate occasions, have been the lemon custard and the ginger heath bar.  They have a nice variety of flavors, some stay more consistent than others.  Also, their portions are generous--you really only need one scoop to plenty satisfy those buds.  The Maple View Farm Country Store has also been a must-go-to for our out of town folks.  It has definitely become a summer staple for this girl!

Fantastic homemade local ice cream. Rockers on the front porch, from which you can see the happy cows the ice cream came from. This is a gorgeous place in the country, but not far from CH/Carrboro. For a real treat, time your visit to watch the sun go down. Spectacular wide view of the sky to the west.

Ice cream: good, not great.  Pros: creamy, no issues with freezing/thawing.  Cons: flavor selection was limited and execution of flavors themselves was very average.
If you're looking for classic, creamy ice cream perfection like Blue Bell or Graeters, keep searching.  We found the ice cream to be better than a chain like DQ or Baskin Robbins but not any better than Ben & Jerry's or Haagen-Dazs.
Prices: average to a little pricey: $2.50 for one scoop, a dollar more for another scoop and $6 for a banana split.
Setting: As other posters have mentioned, the store is out in the country and the farm is within sight of it.  We were disappointed to find that the rocking chairs and porch overlook the parking lot.  Yes, you can see the farmland beyond it but what is directly in front of you as you eat your ice cream is people getting in and out of their cars.  It's nice to be able to sit outside on a rocking chair (especially since there is not much seating inside the store) but there's very little room to take a walk of more than 20 yards before you hit roads or fenced farmland.
The store also sells eggs, meat, and other dairy products.  If you are making the trip to buy these items perhaps it is worth going out of your way to come here.  If you are going solely for ice cream and an experience, be prepared to be underwhelmed.

definitely a beautiful getaway that doesn't take hours to get to and the appeal of homemade ice cream is undeniable.  got the carolina crunch, which had caramel, peanut butter cups, heath bar and something else i think, which was delicious.  i was tempted to get some chocolate milk just cuz it came in a glass bottle, too.  milk in a glass bottle?  i love it!  they also have fresh milk, eggs, and cheese = yum.  eating your ice cream on a rocking chair on the porch overlooking fields of corn and farmland is my kind of relaxing.
