Good and cheap food, great service, but terrible neighborhood
After being denied by the throngs of ppl waiting in front of Dotties, my gf and I decided to come here base on the high Yelp rating. If you're a tourist, beware that this neighborhood is BAD! Besides the extreme poverty, I clearly saw a pimp and his "worker" walking past us. This neighborhood is as run down as you can get in SF (I haven't visited the Mission area yet).
If you get beyond all this, you get a decent American style diner opened by a few Cantonese speaking Chinese ladies. The prices are dirt cheap and the food is good. But the urine filled streets pretty much killed any fond memory of this place afterwards. If I was judging this place base on things they have no control over like their neighborhood, it would get a lot lower score than 4 stars.
This place provides good cheap food in the Tenderloin. For under six dollars you get bread and soup or salad and dessert with your entree. This is the best deal in town. The downside is that it is located in a severely economically challenged neighborhood. If you are willing to put up with the sights, sounds and negative ambiance that go along with that neighborhood, then it is worth a trip. The customer service is fast and friendly. I figured if I was working there six days a week, 52 weeks a year, year after year, I would be extremely jaded. This is not case with this restaurant and their staff. The restaurant is run by Mimi and their Chinese staff. Despite how it looks it does not serve Chinese food. It serves old fashioned American comfort food. They have a very large menu. They also serve breakfasts at even lower prices. I would not call it an island of hope and tranquility in the Sargasso sea of economic despair and miserly, (that distinction goes to Original Joe's) but you could do a lot worse when it comes to eating around this area of town. I will go there again.
Very economical, older and low income people eats here, it is one of the cheapest restaurants in San Francisco, the food is simple with not to much seasoning and it is fresh and very well prepared, the Chinese ladies are very polite, this is not a Chinese restaurant, it serves American food.
Good cheap Eats, Biscuits and Gravy, Grits. Nice homey folks, my Mama likes this place.
This here is a diamond in the rough...I used to run the residential hotel that the restaurant is officially housed in, & for 3 years this was my & my son's favorite breakfast joint. I mean, it's dirt cheap, the food is hella good for what you're paying for it, & the portions are HUGE compared to what you get elsewhere. It's really clean, & MiMi's hella cool (I hadn't been in there for over 4 years, & she still remembers me & my son...that's real cool these days). If you're looking for fine dining, carry yourself on over the hill cuz this ain't it; however, if you're looking for decent food at beyond decent pricing, Manor House won't disappoint.
I'm diggin' this place. I just moved in one block away. This place is totally legit with their cheap prices. Today, I got a "small" oatmeal (which was quite large) for $1.75 and two eggs at $0.75 each. My mom got a "small" tomato juice which was also quite large.
Looking at the menu, pretty much everything here is inexpensive. Unfortunately they are only open from 7am to 4:30pm. This would be a great late-night spot. And honestly, they'd get three stars if it weren't so cheap. My over medium eggs were actually over easy, and the oatmeal was overdone.
The service was very friendly.
I'll be back!
Well, I can honestly say it's quite the experience eating here. This is a restaurant/hang out area for many of the homeless, disabled, and otherwise struggling folks from the Tenderloin.
I ended up here for work--needing to meet someone for lunch who works in the 'hood. This was her choice, so I went along.
It's very confusing when you first walk in. Most of the tables were occupied by people who weren't really eating, but seemed to be hanging out because it was warm and safe. There was a bit of yelling and it just seemed chaotic. I was unsure of how we even order, but my lunch mate showed me that we order at the counter and then try to grab a table. We lucked out and got one, we were particularly lucky because it had just been wiped down.
The food was, well, it was edible. I had the BLT, which was loaded with bacon and I'm giving a star just for that. However, the macaroni salad was a yellow colored mayo (mustard mixed in?!?!?) and didn't taste so good, so I left that pile on my plate.
What was so striking to me was how friendly Mimi, the main server, was with the clientele. She was warm and accepting, despite the yelling and chaos. She never treated anyone with anything less than respect, and her job can't be easy. That was impressive.
Plus, everything is super cheap. I think my sandwich was $3.25. My lunch mate's burger was $2.25.
