Ok, so it's an annual tradition of sorts for my bro, my brofadim and my sis and her hubby to go out to minneapolis once a year (more specifically the last wkend of september, for John Piper's Desiring God conference). Anyways, this one was our very first time going there, back in 2006. back then, it was just the three of us - my bro, my brofadim, and me. It being the lastnight of the conference, we decided to go have a nice meal before flying back home the next day. and being 3 hungry guys, we chose on this steakhouse...well, actually i chose it cuz i wanted some steaks.
Manny's in this hotel/mall/office building, on the 2nd, or was it the 3rd?, floor. it's got the typical old steakhouse look to it (you know, dim lights, all mahogony paneling, thick plush carpets etc). when u enter, this ginormous painting of a bull, and something that caused a violently laughing fit in my brofadim, welcomes you.
as for the food, i ordered my go to cut bone-in-ribeye, and my bro ordered filet (cut for the lithe), and my brofadim ordered ny steak. all medium rare. the meat came out really really good. at least mine did. as for sides, we got cream spinach (decent), mushrooms (good), and baked potatoes (they were baked potatoes).
anyways, my fav steak house is still mastro's in la. but i guess manny's is as good as it gets in the twin cities
GLUTTONS UNITE
Caveat: I don't like the concept of Manny's. They do a fine job of executing it, I just simply don't like it. Here's why:
It's all about excess. I'm not even hungry by the time my entree comes. A bludgeon of beef? What are we, cavemen?
The theatrics of the place are irritating. I'm sorry that your theatre major is worthless, but lay off the schtick. I just want to eat already. That bludgeon starts looking pretty good--as a blunt object--by the time the server is halfway thru the meat cart.
Set aside a few extra hours for the experience.
The food is generally very good--I think they do a fine job with just about everything I've had, including the lobster. I took one of my friends there around Christmas time last year and we just sat at the bar and cracked through a couple three pounders. That was probably my favorite Manny's experience as I didn't have to deal with any of what I outlined above.
The service, aside from being annoying, is very good, they are attentive and personal, maybe even too much so for my tastes.
If you crave the theatre and want to eat like a cavemen who just discovered cow and fire, this is the place for you.
I am from Chicago... We know steak... And burying my pride, I have to say that Manny's Steakhouse certainly 'fit the bill'
I love prime steak and I have to say that Manny's was one of the best experiences in steakhouses I have had around the country.
The food was phenomenal, the staff was great, the service was great, even the bull on the green door leading into the steakhouse from the W was great...
Can't say enough good things about Manny's... I will be back when I am back in MPLS. :)
Meh. There is so much hype around this place, but I really don't agree. The sides are ridiculous in portion, and quite bland in flavor. The steaks seem to be prepared at the right doneness, but the meat is somehow tough. I've had two experiences here, and neither were worth the money. My first experience was the ribeye. A direct comparison to Murray's down the street, for sure. Total and utter failure. The ribeye was questionable to even be choice meat. Tons of connective tissue, tough meat, and surprisingly lacking the outer portion of the rib (you know the part, the tender, flaky side opposite the rib bone). The second experience was the porterhouse. This is hard to mess up, but was spectacularly uninteresting. I'm no master chef, but I could make better steaks myself. That's really the litmus test of a steakhouse, and Manny's falls terribly short.
I was there on business... went to Manny's because of it's awards and legendary stories about the food and wine.
Quite possibly saw the largest lobster and steak I've ever seen... not to mention the mashed potatoes in the middle of the table required a shovel to eat them with.
Take ten people with you to complete a few a la carte sides and a main course. You'll need them!
Great wine too.
Manny's is the best steakhouse I've ever been to, the portion is large, the taste and atmosphere is excellent, the service is a top notch! If you come to this place you should choose the food that fall into the high price range in the menu, it is definitely worth it rather than coming here and not willing to spend extra money...probably you better go somewhere else cheaper with only an average taste but still consider expensive.

oh haaaay manny's!!! first of all, let me just preface by saying that Manny's serves up the best steak between chicago and san francisco and there is a lot of corn fed goodness in these parts! If you're looking for the quintessential steakhouse experience in mpls/st paul...look no further. This place has their routine down like none other...the service is no frills, knowledgeable (i overheard many a fantastic wine recommendation along with random beef knowledge), the sides are out of this world and the atmosphere is fantastic.
A few thoughts on my evening:
1. A great place to celebrate! My sister got engaged and her new hubby surprised her by having our entire families at manny's when they arrived...the hostesses and servers were almost as excited as we were - which really added to the whole experience.
2. the steak cart. yum. there is alot of meat on there. I usually order the small filet, which is delectable...but on the recommendation of the server, i tried the bone in tenderloin and HEYO!!! new favorite cut of steak. I also had some nibbles of my dad's prime rib and i must say - it was right up there taste and texture wise...and you certainly get alot of meat for your buck.
3. the sides. ooooh yes the sides. giant, perfectly steamed spears of asparagus with bearnaise.....deliciously buttery hash browns.....succulent mushrooms.....we didn't get my favorite - the creamed spinach...but trust me, its fantastical.
4. dessert. giant brownie sundae supreme awesomeness. one giant thick, creamy chocolate brownie/cake topped with ooodles of fresh whipped cream, strawberries, vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. seriously spectacular.
now - a moment to discuss the clientele. If you are a single gal, as i am, drop everything, put on a "sexy office" (yea, you all know what i'm talking about) outfit and head to the manny's bar. HOLY COW (no pun intended) the place is literally crawlin with men folk...a gal can't walk from the table to the bathroom without being looked at like a steak on the cart....which, if you're in the right mood, can be just fine and dandy! but seriously...go to the bar...get a petite filet or a yummy burger and just wait to be showered with martinis and don draper types.
Love the food, great service.
Everything about this place is to die for. The appetizers, the drinks, the dessert and of course the steak! Good lord, you will be stuffed, happy and broke after leaving this place. Manny's is epitome of high class steak house.
I was here for a business dinner on a Monday night. No, we didn't want to be rushed but three and half hours!?!? That was a bit much.
I like to consider myself a steak connoisseur, I supped on the petite filet, yes, it was good. BUT it didn't melt in my mouth like other steaks of this caliber have. We tried several sides including: mushrooms (tasted like beef gravy), hash browns w/ onions (meh, your run of the mill hash browns), asparagus (unimpressive, skinny, tasteless spears).
The service was above average but the speech about their different cuts of meat was so rehearsed the same jokes were even told to the next table over. Which I was able to hear so keenly because the tables are SO close together servers were squeezing by me all night. The place has bright lighting, no music, it's loud, and lacks ambiance.
For the price this just didn't cut it. I much prefer Ruth's Chris, a different ritzy steakhouse..or a steak off the grill at home.
I travel a lot for work so I go to steak joints all the time. Manny's is one of the best. Top 5 in the US for sure.
Went w/coworker & did not have a reservation. The place was packed. We went to the bar as the wait for a table would have been hours. When the bartender heard he made room for us to eat there. That is when the fun began.
I always start w/a martini and they are so big you can swim in them! We got oysters which were great. The bar tender gave us a free shot of grey goose to go w/it. fantastic
Got the porterhouse m-rare, cooked perfect. juicy and full of flavor. I pulled the filet side off the bone w/just my fork! It was just great. The hash browns were good and the mac & cheese was perfect. co worker had the filet, he said it was one of the best he ever had.
Portions were obscenely large, so large that it was almost a joke. The cheesecake was so big it was like they gave me the cake, not a slice.
All in all it was excellent and I would go back again.
This is a temple of testosterone. Go ahead and google this place. You'll see the giant Bull with the equally giant nut sack hanging low: Yes big, giant balls. This is exactly what greets as you enter one the finest steak houses in America. You should be well dressed when you eat here. Everything here is massive. Indeed almost comical. The portions could feed small countries and leave room for leftovers. But the the food is delicious. The hashbrown stack is tremendous, and I always love the iceberg wedge. At different times I've enjoyed the bone-in fillet and cowboy steak ( that kingly cut of beef with the bone jutting out). Royal. Midieval They were executed to perfection. This is Midwestern, corn-fed beef at its finest.
If you are feeling like a refined Joey Chestnut this is the place for you.
I love steak. A succulent, well marbled, dry aged rib eye is as good as it gets. Manny did it's best but compared to the best, It wasn't.
Atmosphere:
The decor was inviting and well lit, far different than the power lunch atmosphere of Ruth Chris and the dark lit rooms of Fleming's. Joyous conversations flowing with laughter and red wine populated the room. I could tell Manny's patrons loved their time spent at the restaurant.
rating: 8/10
The waitstaff was also very attentive. Tony, who sounded like a NYC radio host, was courteous and welcoming. I enjoyed the meat and seafood cart. Unfortunately, the Mrs. was saddened by Larry the Lobster, who sat on that cart all night being raised for guests to see his size every 53 seconds. Other than that, our water glasses were never less than 17% empty and our food arrived promptly and timely.
rating: 9/10
food:
We ordered several things. We strayed from some of the recommendations (potatoes) because we knew we couldn't finish it and potatoes just aren't Mrs. G's thing.
- Oysters Rockefeller: While they can't compare to Neptune Oyster in Boston or even Oceannaire, this dish was flavorful and tasty, a good start to the night.
rating: 8/10
- Bone in Ribeye: I believe this should be every steakhouse's signature steak. The style that Manny's made their steak was similar to Gene and Georgetti's in Chicago, dry aged and broiled. Unfortunately, 20% of the steak wasn't edible because of how fatty it was. That fat should have been distributed through out the steak but it was bunched up in certain areas. In addition, I had a few bites with too much gristle. Overall, for $45.95, this steak should be far better than it was.
rating: 3/10
- Small Filet Mignon: Mrs. G had the Filet Mignon. It was the perfect portion for her and enjoyed it. She asked for medium but now, will be moving towards a medium rare steak now. It was a tad too dry but to no fault of Manny's.
rating: 7/10
- Sauteed Mushrooms: I didn't prefer their mushrooms. Cut in half, they were simply sauteed. I could have made these better at home.
rating: 1/10
We've had great success finding quality cuisine, Vietnamese, Italian, Seafood. I hope we'll be able to find another steakhouse that compares in quality to the best in other cities.
Manny's overall rating: 5/10
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm! mmmmmmmm! mm! A must must restaurant to try! Love it!
Pros: Professional service; great food; breakfast menu
Cons: Inconsistent quality; sometimes long wait even with reservation; loud atmosphere
I've been to Manny's a few times since I started school in Minneapolis. I don't think there's a better porterhouse steak in the area, and it rivals the best steakhouses in America. The meat is perfectly cooked and keeps the juices in. The wine is what you'd expect from a restaurant of this calibre.
The breakfast is good too. The kobe benedict fills you up easily in the morning, and I've heard good things about the lobster benedict as well.
With that said, let's move on to some critical areas. This restaurant is out of the price range of many people to dine regularly, so let's make sure they know what they're in for!
Manny's certainly has a fine dining feel, and waiting in line is a frequent occurrence even with advance reservations. Good thing there's a bar in the front area, or you can head over to the attached hotel bar. Once you step into the well-lit main dining area, you'll notice that it's really loud. People's conversations are heard left and right in a similar fashion to the Cantonese dim sum restaurants of my youth. This is noticeable even if you sit in a booth. I didn't mind the odd occasions when conversations reach across tables for strangers to chime in, since it is the Midwest, after all. Some people may enjoy the loudness; it's not particularly my thing all the time. I want to enjoy the company of my guest.
I mentioned my love for the porterhouse, which is easily the best item on their menu. They also present the main courses to you on a cart beforehand uncooked so you can see what you're in for. It makes for an interesting experience to those who have not dined there before. I didn't have as much love for the bludgeon of beef, so named because it resembled a Neanderthal bone club with a chunk of meat at the end. I was expecting something similar to the porterhouse, but it ended up being very charred. I was told by the server that this was the style, so perhaps others enjoy meat burned to the point of being a carcinogen. I stuck to the porterhouse for my subsequent visits. I also heard from a friend who enjoys lamb that Manny's offering is so-so, and I've never seen anybody order the fish (they urge you away from it as a gimmick).
The sides and desserts come in large portions to share. The entire staff is very professional and courteous. I went in Diesel jeans the first time since I didn't have the time to change, but nobody confronted me on my attire. In later visits I at least wore a jacket if not a suit, and felt more in place. In particular, they were one of the few places where I've been helped into an overcoat (after I helped my date, of course). From the manager to the busboys, all of their staff display a professionalism that makes you appreciate going out for dinner.
If you have guests from out of town, then I'd suggest taking them there to experience one of the better steakhouses in America.
Best steak in the Twin Cities. The butter fried hashbrowns are truly not from this earth, the asparagus is so crisp and flavorful. Even the f@#$ing salad was terrific. I love how they bring the "meat cart" out to you, and you can choose exactly which cut you want. High-Class five star dining unmatched by Kincaid's, Fourpaugh's, Ruth's Chris, Jax, and even Murray's. Granted this is merely my opinion.
For years I'd been fond of killing time outside Manny's Steakhouse during special events at the Hyatt. I'd look at the black and white photos of past customers and secretly despise the place. It was mostly out of jealousy because I never really thought I'd eat there. I was a woman of the people, dammit, and smug, privileged smugness would always be beneath me.
Fast-forward to about a year ago when I took my then-boyfriend to Manny's. It was a special occasion, I had some dough, and Marxism is so last century. Due to bad traffic and a smidge of bad planning, we were over an hour late for our reservation, but since it was an early dinner on a weekday night, it wasn't a problem.
We were seated in a corner and got a great view of the rest of the restaurant. We found the atmosphere calming and chic. Our waiter wheeled out a cart of cuts and gave a little speech about that night's offerings. We ended up getting the bacon appetizer (among several huge appetizers ordered without proper appreciation of Manny's portions). I thought we'd get strips, but we got a delicious, indulgent mass of meat, fat and grease. I dream about this bacon. The steaks themselves were phenomenal. I'm sure if I was willing to spend $50 more, I would have ordered another sirloin.
Dishes were cleared with lightning speed; one employee was just there to scrape crumbs off the tables. He was surprisingly discreet in performing this task.
One thing I did not like was how the waiter preferred to talk to my boyfriend, or to me through my boyfriend. He asked my boyfriend what I was ordering, why we were there, if we needed more drinks, etc. Even though I paid for the meal, the waiter handed the receipt folder to my boyfriend. I recognize that this is a minor quibble, and might only apply to a waiter who may or may not work at the restaurant anymore, but if I'm taking care of a Manny's Steakhouse-sized tab, I think it's reasonable to expect some attention.
My wife and I cannot afford to eat at Mannys as often as we like but do try to make once or twice per year for special occasions. We have managed to keep our meal ticket under $100 by splitting a steak and skipping dessert. Sharing a steak is possible because of the extremely large portions and the fact that we always get an appetizer.
If you are going to eat at Manny's do yourself a favor and order the Lobster Cakes. They are probably the most delicious food I have ever put in my mouth!! The steak to get in my opinion is their ribeye steak. My wife got the New Your strip and thou gt it was a little dryer then she would like. From now on we will probably get the same thing every time.(ribeye)
Somebody mentioned that they were not seated anywhere close to their reservation time. I would recommend avoiding this by book an early seating such as 5:30 or 6:00. We like to get our big meal done with so we have the rest of the night to enjoy since we usually have a sitter at home.
I've tried several high end steakhouses working in public accounting in my previous career and this was by far the best, better than Morton's, Ruth Chris, Alexander's or Birk's, all of which are great restaurants.
I went to Manny's when I was in Minneapolis for training. My old roommate from Notre Dame lives in Minneapolis and he suggested we should all try the place out. Four of us got reservations here on a weekday, which was a little difficult but not too hard. No charge if you cancel your reservation.
They start out by bringing out actual cut pieces of meat and throwing a lobster at your table. The waiter was quite amusing, seems the natural aura of the place. Was very honest and told us that anything but the steak was a bad idea.
I got the new york fly strip steak and it was just great. Medium rare, and so tender that you did not even need a knife. Using any side sauce would be unjust. We ordered one side which was big enough for four guys. Was also reasonably priced, under $10 a side.
Ordered a bottle of wine to split between three people and the waiter recommended a great $40 Cabernet, surprising that he did not try to oversell. Portions were great, sides were enormous, and for a high end steakhouse it was very reasonably priced, $80 per person with appetizers, steak, sides, and wine. Amazing steak, great service, truly phenomenal.
Have to try if you ever find yourself visiting Minneapolis.
Pack an artery. THe service is exceptional. They are all about details and quality. Choice of cuts is really impressive.
Treated me like a superstar even tho i was scruffy and alone. WELL done.
If you like living in excess (or having a ridiculously big meal on company dime), Manny's is the place for you! Recently relocated to the W Hotel, Manny's is all about BIG portions and high quality food that will surely satisfy the largest of appetites.
Dinner started with a very good Caesar Salad (don't forget the anchovies!), and the Apple Wood Smoked Bacon appetizer. Warning: this Bacon is not for the faint of heart (see my local pic and you'll know what I mean). Most people will probably see a heart attack on a plate, but the bacon is crisp, moist, and melt-in-your-mouth fatty - exactly what good bacon should be.
For my main course I went with the Bone-In Ribeye and shared a side of Green Beans and Truffle French Fries with my co-worker. Now when your server tells you that sides are made for sharing he/she is not kidding. The table next to us had a side of Hash Browns and it looked big enough to feed a family of four for an entire week. My steak was a perfect medium, and very moist and flavorful. The Truffle Fries were crisp with a nice touch of earthiness, thanks to a generous topping of shaved white truffle.
So far so good, right? Well here's the one thing that will keep me coming back to Manny's whenever I'm in Minneapolis. It's the KETCHUP! I can't live without the stuff, to the point where I stole a bottle from IHOP when I was in college - we'll save that story for another time. Sorry Heinz, but you've got nothing on Manny's ketchup. If they bottled it, I would buy it by the case. What's Manny's secret you ask? They make it themselves from smoked tomatoes (which I think they also do themselves) that gives this condiment fantastic touches of sweetness and smokiness that you won't find in any bottle.
Naturally I had to have dessert so I went with the Banana Cream Pie. The serving looked bigger than an entire pie at Baker's Square and it was darn good. Creamy and rich, without being overly sweet. Now only if they had put some of that ketchup on it...
Great Service. Heidi our server was excellent, which I immediately Twittered. Probably the best steaks in Minneapolis, dry aged, lot of tasty flavor with every bite. We had the bone-in rib eye and the fillet. Prepared excellently to our tastes. Added some shrimp and sides of mushrooms and asparagus that complimented well. Heidi was very knowledgeable and detailed about every dish. We enjoyed the Key Lime pie for dessert. Great evening, great service, great fun! When your finished hop on over to the W hotel bar and continue your evening with a few cocktails.
Went here for lunch. I had the prime rib french dip which was decent. I tried the NY strip and pan fried chicken oregenatta. All were good. Lunch was reasonably priced but I think dinner is much more.
I'm not a big fan of upscale restaurants that overcharge but this place is pretty reasonable and all our meals were good.
With that being said, I have had bigger and better steaks for cheaper so I can't give it the full 5 stars.
Service was excellent but it wasn't that busy.
This was a great steakhouse in Minnesota. I highly recommend going here if you've never been. I had a business meeting dinner here. I liked the fact that they showed you the steak before they cooked it. The Buffalo steak which is what I had before we excellent. Menu is all Ala Cart.
One of the best Steak Houses I have ever been to and I didn't even have a steak. I wanted something light so I had the burger... Light was an understatement. The burger was two half pound Kobe beef patties topped with onion rings. Unbelievable! Great service and typical Midwest steakhouse decor. I will be back next time I visit Minneapolis!
I've ate here a few times on business travel now. The ribeye is the steak to get. The one I had was melt in your mouth incredible. The sides are truly ridiculous in size. I had an order of the loaded potatoes and they suggest 2 people can eat this, but I have no idea how. The place is very pricey, but it's one of the best steaks I've ever had.
When it comes to steak, or just the art of food for that matter, Manny's is a god. The portions are just outrageous, and the food will be the best you will ever put in your mouth. Ruth's Chris makes a mean steak, sure, but it comes with a pompous environment. Manny's seats you with a checkered tablecloth and serves you a ridiculous amount of amazing food and outrageously good steak and doesn't give a crap. They don't have to hold their nose high, and you can wear a t-shirt. They know they're the best. And they are.
While dining at Oceanaire Seafood restaurant, I asked our server for a recommendation for a great steakhouse. He recommended Manny's.
If stars were just given for the amount of food, Manny's would get 10! The portions are beyond huge, gigantic seems more accurate. We split the chopped salad and still had a full plate apiece. A friend and I ordered the steamed broccoli with hollendaise sauce for a side. We received three full heads of broccoli. My porterhouse steak must have been 20 ounces or so. I could barely eat half.
The steak was unremarkable. I would have rather had a smaller portion, but more flavorful steak. I was nearly tempted to ask for steak sauce it was that bland. I ended up putting salt on it twice to try and kickstart some flavor.
Service was OK. Our server had to be reminded of our drink order, bring side plates for the sides, etc. Perhaps it was just a bad night for him.
The noise was also a turn off. We weren't on the dark paneled side of Manny's, but the more bright and perhaps louder side.
I wouldn't come back again as prices are high ($44.95 for a porterhouse). If I'm going to pay that much for a steak, it needs to taste good, not bland.
Manny's should not be in a hotel. nuff said.
My husband's brother was in town for work and we met him near his hotel and tried Manny's for dinner. All three of us were impressed. The place was clean and nice, service was great. The cocktails weren't weak. As for the steak (yes, we all had steak) it was delicious. Cooked to perfection and flavorful. Needless to say, although this is nearly and hour's drive from us we'll go back. It was that good.
Since it's more "upscale" I wouldn't recommend taking babies or young children here.
This meal is now known to my office mates and I as the "beef with a side of beef" meal. We had the applewood smoked bacon for an appetizer. Don't mock that until you've had the bacon. This is not the bacon you get at the diner down the street.
I had the sirloin for dinner. Honestly, I could have split it with someone else. That was way more beef than any single human being could eat but if I could have, I would have.
Manny's was spacious enough (and not over crowded) so you could have a conversation.
Certainly a great place for a meal - personal or business.
Wish I had more stars to give!
I had the best steak of my life here, yup, the best! This place has the feel of an old Rat Pack hang out with the old school decor. The food is absolutely fantastic, the service was top notch and that wine list was surprisingly good for MN.
We try to eat here every time we are in the area visiting relatives. This place makes Ruth's taste like Ponderosa in my opinion. Only downside is you pay for what you get. The bill with a couple steaks and a bottle of wine can quickly get in the $200 range, but you'll leave full of great food and wine.
If shopping around Nicollet Mall you MUST stop in here for a killer dinner!
As far as steakhouses go, it's hard to wean me away from Ruth's Chris Steakhouse. But I had the opportunity to eat at one of the Top 10 independent steakhouses in the nation -- so I did. The company I was with was lame, but the waiter and service was top notch. I ordered the porterhouse cooked medium and we got the asparagus, hash browns, and mushrooms. Wow -- WAY too much food for 2 people. Also ordered a bottle of wine but I forget what is was. After about 10-15 minutes of eating, I realized why I like Ruth's Chris' better -- my steak went cold. And started tasting a bit salty from all the seasoning. It was still good, but I expected a bit more. You see, Ruth's Chris serves their steak on 100+ degree plates and the steaks are sizzling in a small pool of butter. Yum.... =)
But all in all, it was good. Not sure if I'd pay that much to eat there again, but definitely worth a visit. Oh, and the place was just a bit too bright for me. I'm used to very dark brown/red colors at restaurants and I felt like I was eating during the daytime. But there was some seating available in the bar/lounge area -- just have to request it, apparently.
Wow, wish I could eat here every night! Courteous and knowledgeable waiters. Steaks are juicy and the sides are so big they could be main courses. Definitely try the hashbrowns with onions and the mushrooms. Desserts were the only thing that did not win me over. No matter though, because I was barely able to walk out the door after my meal. Manny's puts Ruth Chris (next door) to shame.
Wanted to try something different for our Anniversary so my husband and I tried Manny's. I loved the ambiance. Our waiter was very polite and had no problems answering our questions. On his suggestions I tried a Blackberry Mojito - Very good!! I ordered the bone-in filet and my hubby got the ribeye. When we make steaks at home we put seasoning on ours so although the steaks were good there was no flavor:( Dry aged? not sure what the heck that is supposed to taste like? As you can tell I am not a connoisseur of steaks in fancy restaurants only what I make at home! :) I wouldn't go here again as it is not my thing but I had to try it at least once!
Now that I've experienced both the relocated Manny's (next to the W. hotel) and the old Manny's (by the convention center), I feel completely comfortable telling you to NEVER go there on a weekend night if you want to meet someone after your dinner at a set time or make it home at a specific time to relieve a babysitter. They have absolutely no respect for your reservation time, and in both the times I was there, they blew past it by 30 or more minutes. And it's not just me. I listened to a painful cellphone conversation from a guy and his wife next to me at the bar, also waiting, with him apologizing to a friend who they could no longer meet because they had waited 45 minutes past their reservation time and still couldn't be seated. (Ultimately, they left without eating, though the host offered to make a to-go plate!) I've heard you can avoid this by eating at 6 p.m. or going early-ish on a weeknight, but I'm not sure I believe it (and who eats at 6?).
Once you get past that rudeness (which by the way, is exactly the same at Gibson's in Chicago, but come on, people, this is Minneapolis, and it's rude nonetheless -- and a sign of not knowing how to deal with so many reservations, which to me, would call for allowing fewer, but that's just me), Manny's is a lovely place to go for a big ol' steak dinner. In fact, I think that part of their mission is to hypnotize you with huge quantities of food and decent table service so that you forget you just waited way too long to get in and spent a fortune at the bar doing so. Nice cuts of meat, gigantic, delicious sides (everyone recommends the hashbrowns, and there's a good reason for it but the salads are all excellent and huge, too), noisy and vibrant atmosphere... It's fun. Bring friends. Watch people (Lance Briggs from the Chicago Bears was there the same night that we were). Head over to the W.'s lounge or upstairs to the Prohibition bar after (if they haven't already closed by the time you finish dinner, which given the wait, may be a possibility).
Ahh. Midwestern steak. Something that I so sorely miss since moving to Texas. This place was exactly what the moo doctor ordered.
To get to the bottom line: my steak was cooked exactly as I wanted it: seared and extremely rare. Well-stocked bar. Decor that lets you know this place has been here for a long time (my guess is since the 30s or 40s). Great wait staff. A violinist and pianist duo. Dimly lit, but not dark. Executive chef was waiting at the door when we left and we were able to chat with him. I presume he does that often, and that's a very nice touch.
My two reasons to not give it 5 stars have to do with the obscenity of food:: my steak did not need to be cooked in butter, and I don't see a need to have 20 oz. steaks. (Yep, you read that correctly.) I was pleased with the offering of butternut squash as a choice for a side. Always a good idea to have some vegetables instead of just red meat and carbs.
If there hadn't been so much food coming (and for the record I did NOT order a 20 oz. steak) I would have loved to have tried the walleye cheeks appetizer...
'Wow' is all I can say.
Ok, maybe double-wow.
Not worth the money. The service and atmosphere cannot make up for the poor food. For the kind of prices they are charging, I expected a lot more. Had the NY strip and ordered it medium rare. It came out barely pink more a light brown with a few minute lines of blush whitish pink specks. Medium rare ??? I was too embarrassed to send the steak back so I ate it anyway. Could have compared it to sizzler. Should I give it another try ...Hmmmmm maybe if I got a gift certificate.
My absolute favorite Steakhouse in the U.S.
Excellent steak, lobster, salmon and all side veggies were amazing! I'll give Manny's 10 stars if I can.
I live too far from Mpls now so I won't be able to indulge in their fine food and unprecarious service but I have tons of memories at Manny's from the 90s and they are ALL SO GOOD!!!
I really hadn't had anything bad here, by that, I mean, not only their steaks but their lobster, salmon, huge asparagus spears, gigantic baked potato, and their hash brown (? the cooked potato) were all fabulous!
Even as a poor college student at the U, I couldn't resist going to Manny's at least every 6 months with my carnivore friends! :D If I were there now, I would probably be dining there every month!
I haven't been able to find any steakhouse around the country that gets even close to Manny's. The only other place I uttered a big blissful "aaahhhh" was Gallagher's at NYNY in Las Vegas. But Manny's still is the king of steakhouse for me after all these years!
Enthusiastic 5 stars!
