Mangrove: any tropical tree or shrub of the genus Rhizophora, the species of which are mostly low trees growing in marshes or tidal shores, noted for their interlacing above-ground adventitious roots.
Have any of you smelled mangroves? Not the most pleasant smell in the world. Must be the "grows in marshes" aspect of them. However, this Mangroves did not stink. Well, aside from the pit-stained dude we met, but we didn't even notice that til later.
Mangroves served up some good tunes, decent cocktails, and good people-watching for a girls night out. A nice patio with a DJ provided for an outdoorsy lounge feel. A DJ upstairs helped us to work off some calories we took in at dinner.
All in all, a fabulous night out without the smelliness of actual mangroves. Dig it.
Awesome place, after SO many years in business. I used to come by about 9 yrs ago, recently returned and found it to be AS cool as back then. Great signature drinks, music and servers. Excellent hangout for girls' night out or single girls on the prowl.
This is actually 3.5 stars.
Although impressed with both the food and drinks at Mangroves, overall the restaurant seems to suffer from a bit of an identity crisis. On one hand, the young and knowledgeable wait staff offer up the latest cocktails (try the strawberry basil martini) in a decidedly hip atmosphere; on the other, the perpetual sound of Yani meets John Tesh floods your auditory senses, numbing nearly every ounce of coolness Mangroves has the potential to emit.
Yes, I know music choice shouldn't be the end-all-be-all factor of dining experiences; however, the music choice so impacted our dining experience that we asked the general manager if we could change it. He was a very obliging young guy and did so... to acid jazz. Now I wasn't expecting Bad Religion, but come on. Mangroves is clearly a cool place with killer cocktails, a well-chosen wine list, and an awesome vibe -- they just need some music to match!
Music aside, I highly recommend the Sea Bass special -- perfectly cooked, melt-in-your-mouth deliciousness that's worth every market price penny. Service is outstanding, and if you're lucky enough to have Dionne as your server, you'll be set for the evening.
Siting here (with my AirBook) on a quiet early Thursday evening during a business trip to Tampa. Free WiFi. Doesn't everyone? Don't answer. It was a rhetorical question.
A very friendly welcome from David and Ashley, waiter and waiter-in-training, respectively.
I love the atmosphere. Elegant, simple, and quiet. Yes, the music is on the light "jazz" side, but I don't mind. Sort of similar to being trapped in a high-end hotel elevator.
Began with Foie Gras appetizer and a glass of Pommery champagne for $37 (David, the waiter, upsold me on the bubbly, and he was correct to do so). Perfect. What is perfect? Crisp on the outside and melted in the inside. The salad of baby greens and salty shoestring potatoes complement the fat perfectly.
Followed by tonight's special, the 1/2 rack of lamb. Three chops, medium rare, with the obligatory side of mashed potatoes for $28. A lovely Tempranillo Garancha, Red Guitar ($31), was a tad sweet, but had the power to stand up to the lamb. Into every silver lining is a cloud. Too much salt on the asparagus. Mashed, almost pureed, potatoes (I love potatoes) fit the lamb perfectly.
I am passing on dessert. But, the Australian Selaks Ice Wine sounds very attractive. It was.
This is a restaurant that deserves to thrive.
P.S. About my price rating of $100+. Yes, for me, tonight. I just finished 2 days of business travel eating (think Village Inn, Frankies, sandwiches in the meeting room) so, I was ready to spend. It was worth it.
P.P.S. They have an OK website. HTML and not Flash.
P.P.P.S. It is now 2120 and business is picking up. I can hear the chatter of other diners. Interesting, Tampa eats later than Denver by about 2 hours.
