13 reviews for MangoMoon
First impressions mean a lot and Mango Moon seem to understand this fact as it clearly demonstrated in its Manayunk soft-opening. The place spared no expense in wining and dining the crowds that wondered in awestruck at the places clean lines, open kitchen, smart lighting and over-all Avant-garde design. Service was prompt and extremely cautious - as was the chef who dedicated the time to make the rounds and give everyone a smile and a nod at the least.
The space was roomy, yet a bit crowded.
The Thia lullaby on the wall near the main entrance seemed a interesting touch. And the complimentary deep fried taro, sweet and garlicky pork short-ribs and kamikaze cocktails were killer.
All in all, this is definitely my next stop when I'm in Manayunk.
More to come.

I am so disappointed with my last experience at MangoMoon! I'm still in shock because I want to like it here.
I went last night with a friend to the upstairs bar for drinks. We ordered a lychee martini and a coconut mojito, both absolutely delicious and fresh! Perfect!
While enjoying our fabulous drinks in the carefully crafted upstairs space we noticed a HUGE COCKROACH glide across the room and hit the wall. We notified our friendly bartender (we were the only ones upstairs) and he quickly made a move to eliminate the bug.
GROSS! I should have used better judgement and left, but I was still enjoying my drink. Before we knew it the bartender sent out a complimentary dumpling appetizer - it was a nice gesture and kept us at the bar a little longer. In fact we ordered the Taro and Tofu Combination small plate (very similar to tempura), with sweet chili dipping sauce to share.
I completely forgot about the bug fiasco and enjoyed the rest of my stay until about 2 hours later when I got home and heard a terrible rumbling in my stomach. I'd heard it before, and I knew what was soon to come. Yes, I got food poisoning, as did my friend who dined with me.

Impressive chic décor with food just as good as it looks. It's a byo, which makes it stand out on Main Street. Pad Thai was outstanding and is worth taking the train in from South Philly.
I'm not an adventurous eater, but I loved what I got. I would recommend this place to someone not as familiar with Thai food as it has something for everyone.

MangoMoon is a roomy venue sporting multiple floors. A stocked bar takes up much of the second floor, and draws a healthy crowd. A small upstairs lounge provides a perfect setting for intimate events, with small pillows and a view of the entire restaurant. (Good date spot.)
Try Thai-influenced tapas that will catch your eye, from the adventurous grilled pork neck and chicken livers to more familiar favorites like satay skewers, dumplings, and beef jerky with sticky rice. Everything comes in small plates, perfect for nibbling.
Personal service is one of MangoMoon's hallmarks. Thanks to bartender Heather, we knocked back shots of Patron XO Cafe - espresso-infused tequila with a kick. Our server shined, meeting our needs, and chef Moon even stopped by to chat!
Don't miss their amazingly soothing sea cucumber soup ($6), with an approachable, slight peppery broth. We shared raw oysters ($9), fresh blue-points with a tangy chili-lime dipping sauce, diced garlic, and mint leaves; peppers added color and crispness. To close, we had the Sai Auh (northern Thai-style sausage; $6), full of minced pork with galangal, kaffir lime leaves, shallots, scallions, shrimp paste, and red curry. It had a bit of a bite and wasn't bad. For a side, we had brown rice, but that didn't add to the meal; try the noodles instead.
While the concept of Thai tapas doesn't exactly resonate with me - when I want Thai, I want more than a tease - I won't deny that MangoMoon delivers quality service and cooking into an attractive package.

Whoa, 5 stars? Yea, that's right 5 fucken stars. So I was over at Mad River this one Friday night cause I had won this free happy hour thing (sucks ass) & after an hour of trying to get some drinks at the bar, I gave up & decided a nice dinner was a better use of my time. Unsure of where to dine, I started cruising Main Street to see if anything caught my eye & then that's when Mango Moon came into my life.
It must have been close to 10pm (they close around 10) & I was unsure if they were still open but the friendly staff saw us looking & invited us right in. They seated us by the bar & told us the specials. Being beer week we decided to do their beer flights special in which they gave 2 flights of beer & if you could identify the second flight in a blind taste test the drinks were on the house - pretty sweet deal except we failed.
Time for the food. As an appetizer we got the Northern Thia style sausage, which was like a spicy blood sausage, which we liked. Next for the main courses we got the Grilled Game Bird with Massaman Sauce, Steamed Rice in Lotus Leaf, & Cobia in Red Curry. I didn't have any of the lotus leaf but did try the game bird dish which i liked but I absolutely loved the Cobia in Red Curry. It really hit the spot for me cause it tasted like the fish curry from my childhood, I was in pure ecstasy.
By the time we finished dinner it was after 11pm & the place was closed but the staff was cool & did not try to just rush us out. We actually chilled out for a bit & they let us sample their delicious infused sugar cane & jackfruit vodkas. So was Mango Moon worth it you ask? Fuck yea. Can't wait till the next time I'm out in Manayunk.

Nothing bad about the experience, but only one thing that really stood out.
I was excited about coming here - but the food that we had was just not that good overall. Chicken livers were pretty dry, bland, and charred. Fruit salad didn't taste right at all; some fruits did not taste fresh, and the mix of the sugar and all the fruit juices made for a sourish, sweetish, not delicious syrup-y textured dish. The only dish that anyone at the table REALLY enjoyed was the grilled game bird dish, which was a large serving, very flavorful, and made the whole table wish they had ordered one of their own.
However, our server was nice and attentive, and the atmosphere was just fine, although it was hard to tell as we went on an otherwise "off" night (holiday weekend, so it was very quiet).
I would give this place another shot, but in terms of tapas options available in the city, I think there are much, much better.
So I went back for dinner and drinks! The food was spectacular!!!!! I would never suggest going to a really nice restaurant and getting wings, but this time I will. They were in the top 5 for best wings I had ever had. I also had some spicy sausages and sweet potato fry-like things. I don't know the exact name for either, but both were scrumptious!
I did some more shots and drinks as well. All were great! They ginger infused gin tasted even better this time.

This is a great new addition to the food scene in Manayunk. I just got back from their soft opening night where the always lovely Tida A. served us up some yummy samplings of their food.
It is a really nice space with lots of windows so from the upstairs you get a nice view of Main Street. The decor is very warm and inviting. They have both a downstairs seating area as well as a bar/lounge area upstairs. We will definitely be back to try out their full menu.

I'm a little disappointed by this place. I was taken here by a friend who loves Chabaa, the sister restaurant. It was the first time for the both of us, but the idea of Thai tapas was pretty awesome and carried high expectations from Chabaa.
Firstly, the menu is pretty nice - a tapas style array of different sized dishes serving meat, seafood, and fruits, plus a bunch of lame side dishes that we immediately decided against. The sides felt kind of Craft-esque, made up of starches and veggies, but they sounded too lame for us to bother (steamed rice noodles? no thanks).
We ended up ordering a ton of dishes (6 mediums, 2 entrees for 3 people), but only because the waiter pushed us to order two extra. Mind you, the portions weren't even that big, but I was carrying the eating load for two girls.
The problem was the quality of the food was really varied. The shrimp dumplings were a really bad version of Chinese shiu-mai. The sausage dish ($8) was literally a pork sausage, sliced onto a plate. But the main course of sea bass with thai basil and coconut sauce was wonderful and worth every penny. The one suggestion the waiter made that we loved was the pork neck - sounds gross to you but amazing to me.
Oh yeah, and the drinks were good. Nicely paired wine, beer, and cocktail mix. The coconut mojito tasted like it was made with malibu, but I'm not complaining.
In all, the place is good if you know what to get. But there are too many so-so dishes to dine empirically.
Brad's rating (out of 5):
Food: 3

Decor: 4
Service: 4
Wild card: Good drink menu

Being frequent customers of Chabaa Thai, my friends and I decided to give the owner's new restaurant, Mango Moon, a shot. Mango Moon definitely has a completely different feel.
Along with Mango Moon's full bar, comes a very modern, trendy, and nightlife oriented feel. The inside atmosphere is great if you like Thai chic, but the mood music seems out of place.
As for the food, it was varied and very tasty. The menu features more "small plates" than "medium plates," so it's a great place to grab a few appetizers and make them into a full meal. I had the Thai jerky with jasmine rice and the grilled pork skewers - both were something a little different and came with dipping sauces (as do most of the plates). Complementary nuts and herbal tea come while you wait and the staff is very gracious and friendly. Ms. Moon herself came around while we ate to make sure everything was fine.
Chabaa is more my gear, but Mango Moon will suit others and is definitely a great place to spend an evening

i came here last night with a friend...i dunno if it's a problem with the manager not ordering enough food...but there were so many substitutions bc either the vegetable batch they got in was bad or they completely didn't have the food in stock....i wanted the salmon salad....and then they told me they didn't have the greens but would put iceberg lettuce as substitute (not a fan of iceberg) ...then i asked about the curry that is supposed to be with this other type of fish...and they said they didn't have that fish anymore and would put tuna in it...didn't sound appetizing...tuna with curry? the roti wasn't made right....the dough was basically SOAKED with oil...and not even cooked all the way...i had to dab the roti with the napkin to soak everything up..which was when i realized that it looked like raw dough...no dipping sauce came with it either...we then had the seabass with mango sauce or something? it wasn't anything really...seabass had NO FLAVOR...and the only flavor that i got from it was bc they covered it with this mango puree...didn't really match well with the sea bass ...the service was good...but it could be bc we were basically the only table in there
i guess i expected a lot bc it's the sister restaurant of Chabaa...and i love that restaurant....i dont think i'll be coming back to mangomoon...i'd rather go to chabaa.

I dined here in mid-December 2008 mid-week when before if had it;s official Grand Opening. While the kinks were still being worked out of the place, it was obvious that this restaurant has "All the Right Moves". The owner also owns the Chabaa Thai Bistro just up the the road on Main St. in Manayunk. And while Chabaa Thai is BYOB, Mango Moon has a liquor license and a nice selection of wines. Although, the waitress was obviously inexperienced in wine handling the night I dined there, I have faith that they will improve over time. The food was the focal point and the portions were small but beautifully prepared and tasted fresh and delicious. I would highly recommend Mango Moon when planning a dinner in Manayunk.
Cheers,
John L.
if you're looking for a cool looking place to have drinks, maybe eat some fancy wings + watch all the drunken frat boys/sorority girls walk by this is it. if you're looking for real thai food-go somewhere else.
hands down the most disappointing thai food experience i've had in a long time. i love thai food and will go to great lengths to get it. if i were to have a last meal request, it would most likely include lemongrass, curry and basil in some noodley concoction.
when we got to mango moon i was instantly impressed with the decor. very crisp, clean + well thought out color palette.
the drinks were delicious. i had the mango moon specialty-something with vodka, mango + champagne.
sadly, our dinner choices we're not as spectacular. we ordered the shrimp dumplings, northern thai style sausage, cucumber salad + the steamed rice. the sausage was dry and somewhat burnt-i would have liked it to have some sorta dipping sauce or something to make it more interesting. the cucumber salad is usually such a simple flavorful appetizer with nuts + cilantro, sugar, hot peppers + oyster sauce-mango moons version was simply cucumbers, vinegar + some bell peppers. the steamed rice with shrimp + sausage was perhaps the worst offender of the evening. plain dull rice completely lacking in everything! presentation, smell + taste. ugh!
thai recipes are comprised of such flavorful ingredients-i fail to understand how mango moon could go so wrong!
