This review is just for the breakfast.
For $5.99 you get two small eggs, one smallish peice of toast cut in half, one and a half breakfast sausages, a small portion of "home fries" and a strawberry; It's a fair deal. If you'd like tea with that it will cost you $2.50, not a fair deal
The food was tasty and well prepared, I won't become a regular but this place will do in a pinch.
I can't remember when I last saw such a comprehensive menu of every food item you could ever want. Mexican, Italian, Diner food, American, Greek, Asian. . . .
The service was friendly, the food was good and affordable, AND we even got to sit outside!! I am not so much a fan of the plates of food left out on display for who knows how long. First because they looked a bit tired and scary, second because I kind of wanted to snack on them while waiting which would definitely be ill advised.
I had a philly cheesesteak with fries because what diet? It was nomtastic.
I'll be back to try something else.
Stopped at this place due to some help from some of the Yelp reviews, and plus i was really near the area this weekend.
Happy to say, service, decor (since they just renovated the place), and food was awesome!!
The waiter/server/cook, mind you we got there at lunch time, was really cool. He treated us very well.. We got a reg. salad, with vinegratte that was really good. We ordered a philly cheesesteak sandwich, a roast beef sandwich, french fries, and there special brisbane sandwich which were all top notch. Freshly made was everything, which was a plus.
If im ever in the area i would definitely go back.
So all my reviews have a "So What had had happen was...."
So what had happen was.... is that it was suppose to be a Cousins lunch (plural) but it end up being just Liz ( my cousin who is quite the Yelper) and I. She suggested Mangiare and since we both work down the street, I agreed. And glad I did... Plus Liz is never wrong about these things=)
I ordered a salad with blue cheese, candied walnuts, spinach, apples and grapes. ( the usual wardof salad) plus the chicken. ( not because I am half black but for the protein)
Call me miss piggy but couldn't resist the tomato and cucumber salad. Please believe.... I have had my share of delicious tomato and cucumber salads... but no way am I a tomato and cucumber salad slut but just a skinny girl with a fat inner child. Plus this one at Mangiare was up there on that Hmm... good list
I did enjoy having this stolen moment while eating my delicious salad with my cousin Liz who is growing up to be even more amazing then I thought she would be. Thanks Mangiare!
Having worked in Brisbane for over 6 years, my review may be a little jaded, but it's only out of wishing that this little town had a better food selection. Mangiare is one of the bigger lunchtime restaurants in the area. Whenever someone mentioned this place in the office it was always with a sigh and the feeling that, "well I'm hungry and in a rush." Their food is a little on the higher side for price and and a little on the average side of taste.
There's only one sandwich that I have eaten here that I truly love: the Cranberry, Turkey and Cream Cheese sandwich. Their menu is a mix of pluses and minuses: pastas are average and the soup is way overpriced, but then again they do make a pretty mean Caesar salad and you can pick up a breakfast sandwich pretty quickly. If you come during lunch time when every other person living or working in the tiny nook that Brisbane is, expect to wait behind ten or twelve people for lunch. For fast service, it pays to call and order ahead of time or make the trek out of the City of Stars.
Good place for a lunch or quick happy hour pit stop after work, dinner was a BIG mistake. We got the new guy cook.
Went on Thurs 6pm, a few people in the outdoor patio with some wine, we were the only diners.
The bartender was also the hostess, was also our waitress and server. There must have been a new line cook (young skinny guy with brown short hair) because this guy was terrible. The server had to point and whisper to the cook to correct something about our order a few times with missing or incorrect ingredients.
Appetizers ordered: Spinach and Artichoke Dip was good with bread, unfortunately also came with 6 soggy bendable tortilla chips. Free bread was the best part of dinner.
$9 calamari was 8 large rings, half cooked, cold, served with thousand island dipping sauce, with soggy batter. At this point, we were still waiting on our entrees so I didn't want to complain, just in case the cook overheard and wanted to get revenge by adding some secret ingredients to our meals.
Entrees were $12-14 - asked for med done 6 oz prime rib was about 1/3 of an inch thick and well done, 50% fat and gristle, so for you math folks that is 3 oz of edible meat. The au jus dipping sauce made it edible, the clumpy semen like horseradish was bland and vile. The mash potatoes were cold, veggies were half cooked and barely edible. Please, we were the only people having dinner, no excuse for cold food!!
Dining companion ordered the seared salmon was not seared, but lightly grilled, not overcooked or raw, said it was not bad. Salad with Ahi tuna was scary, definitely did not look sushi grade, but resembled a piece of bloody raw ground beef.
Yes, I could have made a big fuss, gotten the new cook fired, but everyone needs to make a living, so we ate and left quickly leaving a modest tip. Water was filled promptly, but we were the only diners and now I know why.
If you are impressed with their lunch menu, stick to that, do NOT come for dinner, or make sure the experienced cook is working. Happy hour rest stop and enjoy the outdoor seating, but most of the food we had was like going through an episode of Fear Factor.
Bathroom was unisex had pubes, piss stains, and overflowing garbage can.
Waitress and server was great, the cook was out to hurt us.
Adequate for the area.
Interesting set up - line up to order and pick up your food when they call your name. The wait wasn't too bad - about 15 minutes for 3 dishes.
Reasonable prices, decent menu variety - salads, burgers, wraps, pasta, etc. I had the turkey burger w/ cheese - basic/your average burger. Also came w/ fries - average.
Another one of those undiscovered places due to it's location - but it's very good! The turkey burgers are awesome - the the fries are seasoned perfectly! Service is always very kind as well, and there is never a wait.
Food is good the wait time is endless . I go here about once every 3 months . Then I forget about them pissing me off so I go again . Today , over 30 min. wait for a salad and sandwich to go . Then my food is ready and the counter person ( I think the woman actually owns this place ) is having a conversation with some guy . Then she starts talking on the phone . Finally I get up and start staring at my food that is in the cooks window . She runs over and slams it in a bag and says with the phone on her shoulder " Have a nice day" . Ya , have a nice conversation *$%#@.
This place fluctuates in terms of the quality and quantity of their food.
Sometimes I go and the burger I get is great! Others, not so much. The best was when a friend and I went, and they put our burgers on Dutch crunch rolls because they ran out of burger buns....that is cool, but the reason they were out of buns? They only get alloted 6 a day? That sounds strange to me.
In any case, there is an extensive menu with salads, hot items, sandwiches, pastas ( a plus) and the people who work there are really friendly so as dining atmoshere it gets more like 4 stars, but for the food, definitely 3.
Decent. This place tries real hard to be a trendy, European style cafe, with slightly spruced up average American diner fare on the menu.
My salad had waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much dressing on it, and it was frankly inedible. It was beefed up with lots of veggies, and was OK value for the price. I ate less than half. Be sure to order the dressing on the side if you get a salad.
Mangiare = Mediocre. Could be better, but with not many options in Brisbane, I may pay this place another visit.
If I had to choose between the uber-busy Subway and Mangiare for lunch, I'd go to Mangiare.
Pros: Speedy delivery even during peak hours. The lunch line doesn't go out the door like the Subway in the same area. Big portions for a 'gourmet deli' sandwich and their rice bowls. Daily specials are never the same from one weekday to the next. You can't say Monday is 'roast beef sandwich day' for instance.
Cons: Can get loud during lunch hour, and I can see how people would be turned off by it. Heavy handed on salting the fries some days. The pasta is a bit bland. Be smart about outdoor seating and do it on a nice day. The breeze is biting during colder days.
Come for a decently priced alternative to Subway and McDonald's, but order to go if you can't stand loud restaurants.
Huge selection, overpriced and I don't think they take pride in what they make.
I've eaten here a couple times - because I figure I'd give it a second chance! Blaaaa! All I can remember my second time there is ordering a veggie burger and it was literally cold mush of potatoes, carrots, peas, edamame and any type of vegetable you can smoosh up in a patty, they didn't even dip it in batter or anything and cook it just to try to hold it together. Every time I bit into it, it was a cold mush oozing out of the bread which was way too thick for the patty. WTH, did you run out of veggie patties and think that this was a good substitute? I would have taken it back if I ate there but unfortunately, it was takeout during my lunch and I only have an hour.
If you look at their menu, they are trying way too hard to be international and fancy when the food is just really awful.
One star because I have to give it a rating. In that case, the one star goes to the restaurant looking good and a menu with a wide variety to choose from but good luck if it even tastes good.
Subway is a few doors down, you'll get better quality there!
Large menu, (they supply lunches at my workplace) very comfortable surroundings, large area with sofas or nice sit down tables for four or sit outside when nice. They are now open for happy hour with draft beer and cocktails.
I like their sandwiches, their lox bagle, their coffee is good plus their solid diner menu items including desserts and pastries, pies etc.
Service is a friendly and efficient but good use an extra edge of personality and customer focus to be top drawer.
Don't know about their breakfast or lunch, but dinner was fantastic. I ordered the roast beef with mash potatoes and grilled shish kabob. It sounds like a Marie Calendar's meal, right? No. The taste and arrangement of the food is on the level of food of a fine dining restaurant. The dinner menu is limited (around 8 options), but I'm hoping they'll expand their choices.
As for the environment ... not your cozy, fining dining atmosphere - although they try. Adding music would be a good idea.
The staff - very friendly; they make sure you're served immediately. I waited about 10 minutes for my food- not bad.
Overall, I recommend this restaurant. It's not over-priced, ~$10/entree. Take a break from the surrounding Asian and Mexican restaurants, and give this a try!
I was recently introduced to Mangiare by Charles K., my own personal guide to the best lunch options in the vicinity of Oyster Point.
The number of items on the menu is slightly overwhelming: salads, sandwiches, grilled items, rice bowls, soups, and a whole line of smoothies and coffee drinks. Quite reasonably priced too. More than a few items caught my interest so I was having some trouble deciding.
I tried the tandoori chicken sandwich, which was good, though somewhat misnamed. Nothing really tandoori about it, it was a grilled chicken with a fruit chutney spread over the bread. Still, a decent sandwich and I was happy with my choice.
Plenty of seating available and a pleasant environment for eating in. I really like having healthy eating options available out of the limited restaurants in the neighborhood, so I'll probably be back to check out the other items.
I met a dear friend here today for lunch and was expecting a bad experience based on the reviews. Today's lunch was so nice and I will make this our go-to place for future lunches. The restaurant was clean, the staff nice, the menu extensive, and the food tasty. By the time we left it was packed (along with the parking lot). Honestly, it was really hard to decide what to eat, and as usual, I went with my bor-ing palate and got a burger. What a wussy.
I ate at this place last night with some of my family. Got here around 7:30ish it was pretty empty. So we sat down ordered a couple of drinks and ate some bread and butter as we waited. The prices are really good. there was prime rib, mashed potatoes and veggies for only $11.50! So I decided to order that with calamari as an appetizer. My son got pizza and they have a real pizza oven which is a plus! The waiter was really nice and attentive he came back around a few times just to check and see if everything was good and also get us some more cocktails. When I got my prime rib it was realllly good actually one of the best ones that I've tasted to my suprise! Everyone had a really good dinner the price was right our tummys were full and the service was excellent!!!!
I like this place. Tried it for the first time today. I would say and my review reflects the food. Its above average. I had the Mushroom burger one word- GRUB. My co-workers? also enamored. This place has earned a much coveted star amoungst the lexicon of Monogram BioSciences Restaurant Reviewed establishments.
Upon "Mangiare" We are pround to bestow the coveted title of Monogram"West".
I like this place. I have only gone here for dinner although I looked at the lunch menu and the food looked really good and decently priced. I will go back to try one of the bowls. I had the mediteranean salad add chicken and my girlfriend had the quater chicken with mashed potatoes and veggies. I was jealous of her dish! Mine was good, not too exciting, but it did the job quite well. The chicken was good and the gravy on the mashed potatoes were very good it was almost sweet (GF said it was apples, maybe so). I found myself reaching a cross the table many times! The waitress was helpful, friendly, and attentive, but not overly so. All in all it was good and I will go back soon because it is close and convenient and the food is pretttaaayyy good, pretttaaaayyy good!
I am not lucky enough to have a maid do my laundry. Personally, on the weekends, I would love to just have fun.. but unfortunately, some chores must be done and laundry is definitely one of them. This may sound strange to most clean freaks, but if I clean, I want to feel like I'm not cleaning.
How do I cope with a hang over and a task of doing 5 loads of laundry? Brunch at Mangiare.
I drag my loads of clothes, to the next door laundrymat, throw them in the wash and head over to Mangiare. I order my food (which they have a wide selection of sandwiches, salads, burgers, etc.), enjoy the sunshine and read the newspaper. My food is brought to my table and I take my lazy time eating and chatting with my boyfriend. Mangiare has plenty seating, and you have your choice or big wooden table, white table clothed tables and the comfie couches and coffee tables. I choose the white table clothed tables.. cuz I like to pretend I'm fancy with my $5 sandwich. Hell, this is brunch you know.
When I'm done eatting, I throw the laundry in the dryers. Then, I come back to Mangiare, finish off my coffee and chat until clothes are done drying. Its easy to have time slip away because Brisbane is a pretty little town. I like sitting outside, sipping on my coffee or my smoothie (those are good too) and day dream as I watch the leaves on the trees flutter in the wind.
Laundry is done in 2 hours and I had brunch at the same time. Whew, tough life, huh.
I LOVE this place. Whenever I go for breakfast i always order the french toast with eggs and it is delicious! I have had their omelets too and they are awesome. I love their dinner options as well. When I go for dinner I usually order the calamari for an appetizer and the steak with the mashed potatoes and vegetables for my main course. SO good! Also with the remodel they now have a full bar! I would definitely recommend this place if you are in town and looking for a good meal!
I ate at Mangiare today. It's maybe a once a month thing for me. The sandwiches are mediocre at best. My rye bread was on the stale side. If the avocados are hard as rocks they should just say that they're out instead of serving it and forcing me to remove them from my sandwich. The staff is less than friendly, and yes, the cafeteria style ordering is irritating.
So why do I go? Well, for starters, I can park my bike outside without worrying about it getting jacked ( I work in Hunter's Point). the salads are decent; it's not fast food, etc. But just writing this review has annoyed me to the point of thinking I'm not going to eat there anymore. I'm hoping that reading this has annoyed you as well. :)
I'm surprised by the middling reviews for this place. I liked the open feel and ample seating. I've tried a couple of different things at lunch and not yet been disappointed. Last time I was there, they were passing out free mango smoothies to people in line. They were excellent too - if the sample hadn't been so large, I probably would have ordered one.
The prices are reasonable for the food - this isn't Mayberry, if you're going to eat out, it will cost you. $6.50 for a sandwich and drink isn't going to kill anyone.
One star off for the dizzying array of menu selections. While I applaud the embracing of the American virtue that is limitless selection, you could spend an hour deciphering everything they offer. The large chalkboards behind the counter, with their multicolored chalks and randomly large words, don't help things. Please assume the average consumer is dumb, distracted, or in a hurry (possibly all three) and simplify. Or put some sherpas in line to help guide us through the options.
Fantastic hamburgers, try the giant mushroom burger. The fries are hit or miss, when they are good they are great. I am not thrilled with their breakfasts, although the sandwich is good. For dinner the caesar salad is good and my husband liked the prime rib and was amazed at how cheap it was.
Good food with a family restaurant feel. The owners are extremely friendly and welcoming. Be sure to either take an early or late lunch, as there is usually a long line during the lunch rush. Not to worry... the line moves pretty fast.
Thumbs up for the sandwiches.
What a disappointment. I have been here many times and I don't know why. The food is not to par and the service sucks. I have both eaten here and had food to go. Every time you have food to go you are missing utensils, napkins, or they give you the wrong order. And you need to drive back. Yes I've heard it before "why don't you check your order before leaving".... WELL WHY DON'T THEY CHECK IT BEFORE TURNING IT OVER!
I once ordered the vegetarian spinach wrap, and was it the blandest most boring food in the world. The filling is 80% white steamed rice, and two asparagus spears, with grilled zucchini and bell peppers, $6.99. I opened up the wrap and ate the veggies and left the 40lbs of rice behind. Bland and Dry, nasty!
the tofu teriyaki bowl is good, not great.
the deleted octopus scene in THE GOONIES is ridiculous- it's a good thing it was removed from the final cut. it's kinda funny that data still references the octopus at the end of the movie, though.
A girl with these crazy drawn in eyebrows (she kinda looked like a lady bug)took my order. That in itself made me lose my appetite, so i ordered a shrimp avocado salad. It took 15 minutes for them to make me and my coworker's salad, which sucks cuz my break is only half an hour.
The salad had no flavor. It tasted as if they drizzled olive oil on it and nothing else (it made my lips glossy). And they sparingly added microscopic diced avocados and shrimp embryos. I would have rather spent my $8 to get my bangs trimmed at a Chinese salon.
I have no idea what happened here. We used to eat lunch here two or three times a week. Ever since the remodel, they suck plain and simple.
Here is the last visits summed up so you can understand.
1) - ordered a grilled chicken sandwich to go. Got to work, it was bread and cheese no chicken. The boss made me go back. Damn it had to be his sandwich!
2) - I was feeling a little sick, so I asked for a bowl of soup and a grilled cheese. The new employee informed me that I could not order a grill cheese as it is not on the menu. Umm, you have bread, cheese, and a grill...... She was defintely too lazy to figure out a price. I was the only person in there too!
3) - Ordered a Meatball sandwich. Took 25 minutes, and it came out completely cold. How do you manage that when it had melted cheese? We asked them to reheat it. It still had the bite we took missing, and a hair. The bread was chewy from the microwave.
4) - Ordered a chicken ceasar salad. That was actually good. But I couldn't hear my friend at lunch becuase the employees were screaming out the order pick ups. CONSTANTLY.
I really used to love this place. Now employees here are explaining to me issues they have after they eat here. Apparently, I am the only one who does not have to run for the pink bottle.
Drive to South City. Darby Dans has it all, and they never let you down.
I just ate lunch here today. 2 words sum it up- fast and tasty. I ordered the chicken pasta w/ pomodoro sauce. Everything meshed well including cheese (a bit too gooey) and olives (very flavorful). I sat down for a little over 5 minutes and my food was hot and ready. They don't do table service unless you ordered a beer or something. Very reasonable prices and this'll be my new regular lunch spot.
I'd give this place four and half if it was an option. This is a solid spot in our little town of Brisbane. The lunch's are solid with excellent salads... we haven't ventured into the other items besides sando's and salads,(there is a ton of them), but salads/sandos here are tasty. The line is a little long at times and the food doesn't come out super quick (but adequetly quick)... but is that a bad thing? It's vibrant, the ingredients are actually quite fresh and sitting for a few minutes at lunch isn't the worst thing in the world. Overall it's a good value.
BTW, the pizza oven just started and the pizza's are also really good.
I'm not sure how pessimistic to be on this review. On the one hand I do like their garden salad with flank steak a lot. On one of my many other hands, the lines can be long, the counter staff is busy and rushed, and passes that feeling along to the customers, and I'm no longer amused by the surprises frequently found in the un-washed salad greens. Plus they've never seemed to get that gnat problem under control, and those little bugs that fly around the flower pots on the table get a little annoying after a while.
Their sandwiches are reasonably priced and can really give you a food coma afterwards. I like how they have tons of choices. Most of the time service is fast and friendly. It's a good, fast, lunch spot if you only have half an hour or so to munch.
I have to write another review of Mangiare because this time I'm hoping that this goes through directly to the manager. The food at Mangiare is good. People like it. I like it a lot. However, the wait times are ridiculous and completely unnecessary. The kitchen runs like a bunch of clowns bumbling around not knowing who's doing what. Today, the slip with my order was placed on the rotating holder thing, and then when the next order was taken, it was put on the holder and mine was rotated back 180 deg so that the chefs didn't get it for another 10 min. They then prepared the food rather quickly (maybe 5 min), but then of course the food had to sit all wrapped up, getting cold, for at least 10 minutes before someone bothered to call my name and give it to me. And the thing is, this kind of thing happens to me EVERY TIME I GO TO MANGIARE. I've seen burgers sitting there behind the counter getting cold for 15 minutes. This place is losing major $ because of incidents like these. No one (especially not their business lunch clientele) wants to wait 20-30 minutes for something that should take 5-10 min. This prevents me (and many others, I'm sure) from going to Mangiare more often. I weigh whether the good food is worth the rage I am always filled with after going there. So please, please, please, Mr/Ms. Manager of Mangaire, hire a person whose job it is to organize the kitchen, to read out the names when the dishes are ready, and to make sure that the orders get processed quickly. Also, get rid of the turning order slip holder and get something that the cooks can actually see and that puts the slips in the order they were taken.

I've been going to Mangiare for about a year. I am finally so fed up with the service that I won't… Read more »
I agree with Kevin RE the service .. rather gruff. I usually eat light here and get the ceasar salad. For my blind self, the board is rather hard to read, even with my specs. The sandwiches are good, but nothing to write home about. It does get rather busy, and parking, even though there is a lot, gets really full. I enjoy going here on a warm day ... in Brisbane, you say?? Well... yes sometimes! People watching is fun from the outside. Fine if you are in the area.
I go here when I get tired of going to Specialty's which is twice a month. There are too many things on the menu that it's overwhelming and a bit pricey. I ordered a meat loaf sandwich thinking that it would be filled with lettuce, tomato and other fixings in a sandwich. but it came with the piece of meatloaf and bread. For $4.50, I would have been better off going to McDonald's or Taco Bell.. Sheesh.. Maybe I should just stick to the salads.
Mangiare are great casual lunch caterers. The handful of times we've used them they've shown up on time and the food was well presented. Check them out for your next company luncheon. Tuna Nicoise salad is my favorite.
huuuuge selection of dishes, none of which are tasty or memorable. i recommend you walk a few steps over to la tre for a much more flavorful meal.
Mangiare is a fabulous caterer. They always present their food on beautiful platters and trays. Their food is very good as well. The only thing is they are a bit pricey so I would only order from them for VIP guests.
